5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this!
My nephew is 21 months and absolutely loves this book. Each time you turn the page he thinks it's a "new" cricket and we have to click it again. If anyone else knows of another book similar to this I'd really appreciate it!

5-0 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book
This is a great book. It rhymes, so it makes it very easy to read and on each page you can "click" the crickets. It also has bright, colorful illustrations. This is one of our favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book - for child AND reader!
What an enchanting book! The text weaves a great story with charming graphics and fun, somewhat tongue-twisting, rhymes.Who knew that cricket clicks could have so many nuances?:-)

My young daughter loves sticking her hand through the "holes" in the pages where the crickets go, and getting me to "click" the crickets.Always a fun time...

I'm sure she will continue to love it as she engages with the story. The narrative talks about a young cricket learning to sing, with both mommy's help and the encouragement of other animals (who sing along).Too cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
my 13 month old loves this book...The colors and rhyming story are wonderful...My son likes the crickets, which you press and they make a "click" sound...This entertains him while we are reading the story...you won't regret this purchase! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars hagiography
This book is almost worshipful of Rachel Carson. To be a tad irreverent, it reads like Mao's "Little Red Book" -- the struggling upper-middle-class protagonist persevering against all odds.

Check out Rachel's character traits from the book:

+ declines all social invitations
+ spurns popularity
+ makes her peers envious through her enormous intellect and incredible good luck
+ when in the sun, develops freckles rather than tanning
+ always double checks her facts!
+ physically unhealthy and very susceptible to colds

This isn't a TERRIBLE biography, the author didn't do a bad job; it's not Candice Ransom's fault that Rachel Carson is so unappealing a subject. This book reinforces some of what Rachel Carson believed, such as page 46 -- the natural world is in grave danger! -- and page 51 -- ALL LIFE is threatened by human progress!

Personally, I think the best that could be said about Rachel Carson was that, in her quest to eradicate DDT through her book "Silent Spring", she misapplied her intellect.48 million human beings have lost their lives (so far) to malaria as the price for her grandstanding.Let that number sink in.48 million productive, creative, cherished human lives, cut short at the whim of one American woman.

I guess there isn't much Candice Ransom could have done to improve on her subject. The hushed-respectful tone of the book is a little grating.

Not a horrible biography, but not someone I would want my children to emulate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for young readers
A biography of scientist/author Rachel Carson for the intermediate grades or so, it is well done; an accessible, easy-to-relate-to telling of a bright, good woman's life that led to the publishing of her controversial Silent Spring, a book which in many ways pioneered modern ecological awareness on a large scale.Carson's history of science and writing interest from her youngest days provides good inspiration for youngsters to do well, never knowing what good future endeavors their interests and skills may lead to.My group of solid reading fifth graders enjoyed it, and more than one child, several girls most notably, expressed the desire to combine writing and science in ways like Carson did.Valuable and recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique rendition of the Nativity story
Fine's language is magical. She's included sensory details, universal feelings, humor, and strong characterization in the form of her cranky cricket in the stable that night. Her unique rendition of this age-old story is a "must" for holiday gifts for children; adults will love it, too.Winslow Pels's illustrations are stunning, right down to the donkey's eyelashes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rhythmic Holiday Celebration
A grumpy little cricket just wants to sleep but there is no peace in the stable and the bright star is shinning in his eyes. "Such light. Such Noise. Is there no peace?" Just when he thinks he has found some quiet, Mary and Joseph arrive with a noisy donkey and then visitors arrive.

A shepherd girl scoops up the cricket and holds him high above the crowd so he can see the baby in the manger. Once he has a view he becomes interested in the angels and manger scene. He is so impressed that he decides to sing a song for the baby Jesus, only he can't quite manage more than a "Gar-Reech" because that has been his tune for so long.

Finally he manages to create a "Chirrr-rup Chirrr-rup" and feels he has
become part of the celebration.

Winslow Pels' illustrations fill each page with seasonal beauty in subtle shades of blues, reds and brown with sand-tone backgrounds. Edith Hope Fine's words dance and jump from the page in cricket sounds mingling with the tale of Jesus' birth.

A memorable story with a change in perspective near the end. It shows children that things are not always as they appear and miracles can even be found in seeming chaos.

Editorial Review

Product Description
In much of North America, crickets and katydids provide the soundtrack to summer nights, and grasshoppers frequent the fields and roadsides of midsummer days. Although insects from this group have long been the bane of those who make their living from the land, grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets are themselves crucial food sources for many species of birds, reptiles and amphibians, and other creatures.

Field Guide to Grasshoppers, Katydids, and Crickets of the United States introduces readers to the biology, behavior, and ecological significance of one of the most obvious (abundant, large, and colorful) and important (ecologically and economically significant) insect groups in North America, the order Orthoptera. A simple, illustrated identification guide assists the reader in distinguishing among the various groups and narrows down the options to expedite identification. The book treats more than a third of the species found in the United States and Canada in brief, easy-to-understand sections that provide information on distribution, identification, ecology, and similar species. Distribution maps accompany each profile, and 206 species are pictured in color. Black-and-white drawings highlight distinguishing characteristics of some of the more difficult-to-identify species. Sonograms provide a graphic representation of the insects' distinctive sounds, which may be heard on Thomas J.North America.

This is the first treatment of North American grasshoppers, katydids, and crickets to portray the insects in full color, and it will be the first time many amateur naturalists and students have the opportunity to see the amazing and colorful world of Orthoptera, because many are cryptically colored (their bright colors evident only in flight) or cryptic in behavior (nocturnal in their habits). John L. Capinera, Ralph D. Scott, and Thomas J. Walker designed their book for amateur naturalists who wish to know the local fauna, for students who seek to identify insects as part of entomology and natural history courses, and for professional biologists who need to identify invertebrates. This invaluable field guide will be a useful supplement for laboratory and field activities and a reference for classrooms at every level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These creatures have been SET ASIDE
These creatures were used by our Lord to punish the heathens of Egypt. They have been SET ASIDE.

I ADVISE ALL ROSY-CHEEKED TEENAGERS TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS SUBJECT!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good beginning
This book sounds great when you read the description and when you get it, it looks like it will be another in the current wave of amazing field guides for previously obscure insect taxa exemplified by Ed Lam's 2004 Damselflies of the Northeast. When you try to use it, however, as I did on several recent occasions, you run into limitations. The keys are great to a point but I kept getting stuck at genus level or higher. Also, because you're often trying to identify a congener to the species illustrated, you have to "squint" a bit. Of course once you've had to do that once or twice you lose faith in the fine points of the illustrations even when you're pretty sure you're looking at the same species as illustrated. This book is great if you want to learn to separate the higher organization of the katydids, grasshoppers, and crickets and it is very useful for the information it provides on a particular species (habitat, life history, etc.) once you've got one identified, but for IDing a lot of grasshoppers to species, you'll need more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
As an entomologist living in the United States and interested in identifying grasshoppers etc. I was pleased to see this book published. However, despite claiming to cover 'the United States' it does not. Alaska is absent. I'm sure the publishers don't mind the extra money from those wouldn't have bought the book if the title had said 'contiguous United States'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Field Guide to Grasshoppers
As an amateur naturalist I had wanted a small book to help in identifying these insects. The Insect field guides tend to not be specific enough. This book is a true field guide to this group of very common insects and has some beautiful colored illustrations as well as an excellent key.

5-0 out of 5 stars grahoppers
A good addition to a library of detailed information about a common insect. This book follows after a general insect guide for anyone with curiosity about grasshoppers. Walk through arecently dry filed or lake and have this book in your pocket. ... Read more

Product Description
Cricket was played in Virginia in 1710 and was enjoyed on Georgia plantations in 1737. Teams representing New York and Philadelphia faced each other as early as 1838. By 1865, Philadelphia was considered the best cricket-playing city in the United States, competing against Canadian, English and Australian teams from 1890 to 1920. This 30 year span was essential to the formation of America’s sports identity—and by its end, while the sport of baseball drew increasing attention, the game of cricket moved from being the game of America’s aristocrats to a safe haven for America’s nonwhite immigrants who were excluded from baseball because of Jim Crow laws.

Here, the game’s unique multi-ethnic, religious and cultural tradition in the United States is fully explored. The author explains cricket’s ties to the beginnings of baseball and covers the ways in which the game continues to play an important role in America’s inner cities. ... Read more
