For this book to cover the 100th Anniversary of the Davis cup, it was a mediocre.It should have been special not only because of its importance to tennis but for the memories of the fans and players.Some of thepictures are of poor quality and are not as clear, crisp and sharp as werepictures from previous yearbooks.The review of each round was average toweak.The only redeeming quality was the foreword by Patrick Rafter wherehe describes what it is like to play in Davis Cup tournaments.Outside ofthat, the book offers very little. ... Part I reprints and reworks Huygens's On Reckoning in Games of Chance. Part II offers a thorough treatment of the mathematics of combinations and permutations, including the numbers since known as "Bernoulli numbers." In Part III, Bernoulli solves more complicated problems of games of chance using that mathematics. In the final part, Bernoulli's crowning achievement in mathematical probability is manifest: he applies the mathematics of games of chance to the problems of epistemic probability in civil, moral, and economic matters, proving what we now know as the weak law of large numbers.

Sylla provides an extensive introduction and detailed translator's notes. She includes as supplemental texts Bernoulli's "Letter to a Friend on Sets in Court Tennis" and "Thesis 32" of Theses Logicae de conversione et oppositione enunciationum.

Incredible moments, compelling stories
101 Incredible Moments in Tennis was throughly enjoyable. Each story is a compelling chapter on its own, but after finishing one I couldn't wait to move on to the next - and the next. Lots of interesting pearls for the tennis buff.

Excellent Resource for the Technique
One of the best on technique written by top German (Deustcher Tennis Bund) authorities. There are multiple action-photo sequences for most techniques and illustrations of errors and what to do. Few books come close to its clarity or thoroughness in covering tactics. It is a bit dry (as with other German tennis books) but that doesn't take away from the usefulness of this tome as a reference.

The tactical section leaves much to be desired however, since it discusses mostly technique but doesn't address how the two really come together. Two-thirds or more of the book is devoted to technique. The tactical section is quite applicable althoughbasic.

ACE
Besides Dick Gould's classic book on tennis instruction.
