5-0 out of 5 stars Manuel Cueva MBA, ACC, NCOC
It is an excellent book for the formation of leadership coaching.
An important aspect for me is now understood that the organizational coaching is a sub-set of Consultation, as I understand that a coach working organizational leadership in organizations, must have organizational experience.
An excellent book for coaches who work in leadership!

5-0 out of 5 stars To become a coach, you must be a credible leader and agent of change.
1. Marshall Goldsmith said, "As a leader, we preach about teamwork but excuse ourselves from it."
2. Why is it so difficult for leaders to promote change in behavior among those who behavior they can influence?
3. Leaders are often afraid that confronting people about poor teamwork will cause them to be disliked. The paradox is leaders would be respect more for bring bad news.
4. Develop and determine the behavioral characteristics of a successful manager.Secure agreement on the profile.
5. Develop an action plan.Focus on one or two key behaviors and develop a few action steps to improve each.
6. There is a difference between recognizing a problemThe problem is just figuring out what to do, but acting.Learn by action and not just thinking about what to do.
7. Talk with the manager about the results of his peers feedback. The point is to discuss the manager's key strengths and areas for improvement.Followup in three to four months and determine, if improvement has occurred.Follow up will guarantee continual improvement. The manager will change his behavior.
8. To become a coach, you must be a credible leader and agent of change.
9. Leaders give and receive honest feedback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the definitive source for understanding the practice of leadership coaching

This is the Second Edition of an anthology first published in 2000. Marshall Goldsmith and Laurence Lyons selected, organized, and contributed to the material that is divided into four Parts: Foundations of Coaching (Chapters 1-4, Pages 3-42), Building Blocks (Chapters 5-10, Paged 45-82), Leading Change (Chapters 11-18, Pages 87-159), and Applications (Chapters 19-26, Pages 163-243).As Goldsmith and Lyons explain in the Preface, this edition "expounds a well-accepted practice, not a rapidly emerging bright idea. This book contains fourteen brand new chapters; another ten chapters have been significantly revised. We include new detailed case studies, which we know are highly valued by our leaders."

Presumably this book will be of substantial value to those who are preparing to begin a career in leadership coaching or have recently embarked on one.I also think it will be of great value to most C-level executives and other supervisors who are determined to help develop effective leaders at all levels and in all areas of their organization. For at least some people are full-time executive coaches, much of the material in this book will probably serve as a reminder of what they already know. However, there is always room for increased knowledge as well as improved capabilities (especially information retrieval, diagnostic, and communication skills). For other readers who are primarily responsible for the performance of their direct reports, the material in Parts One and Two will probably be of greatest interest and value. In my opinion, most of the material is relevant to leadership development within any organization, regardless of its size or nature.

Here is a representative selection of brief excerpts from three articles.

"Coaching is a sub-set of consultation. If coaching is to be successful, the coach must be able, like a consultant, to create a helping relationship with his or her client. To create such a helping relationship, it is necessary to start in the process mode, which involves the learner/client, which identifies what the real problems are that need to be worked on, which builds team in 2which both the coach and th4 client take responsibility for the outcomes." "Coaching and Consutation Revisited: Are They the Same?," Edgar H. Schein (Page 24)

"The first thing is to ask yourself the question, `Why?' Why do you want to be an executive coach? What is your aim? What is your mission? What is your purpose? What are your goals? Why would you choose to be an executive coach rather than to do something else with your time and your life?...Identify the most important things that you have learned in your career that would be helpful to other people. You must be absolutely clear about what you are going to bring to your coaching clients based on your own knowledge and experience." "Making the Transition from Executive to Executive Coach," Brian Tracy (Page 101 & Page 102). Tracy also identifies "four key principles in strategic marketing" of executive coaching services: specialize in a particular area, "set yourself apart" (i.e. differentiate yourself from the competition), find your niche market, and focus your efforts. Tracy recommends clearly defining (in writing) the value offering, how much to charge for services, how to market those services, where services will be provided, and positioning (i.e. determining the words that describe you").

"The coaching process we use is fairly standard. It generally consists of five phases: contracting, assessment, goal setting, development training and evaluation. Although all five steps are important, we try to guard against moving too quickly through the "set-up," the preliminary assessment and planning phase that identifies the issues and sets the foundation for the success or failure of the engagement. In fact, the set-up may occupy the first two to three months of meetings. The questioning abilities (along with the patience) of the coach are key. The success or failure of the entire engagement is often dependent on the coach's willingness to gather the pieces of the emerging puzzle, help assemble a clear picture of the goals and challenges at hand, and partner with the client to lay a foundation for success." "Coaching Business Leaders," Richard Gautier and David Giber (Page 117).

Obviously, a C-level executive or supervisor needs to modify the advice to full-time executive coaches (such as provided in the last excerpt from Gautier and Giber's article) but even so, as indicated previously, I think almost any C-level executive or supervisor can learn a great deal from the same advice that can be applied during opportunities each day to help direct reports to strengthen their own leadership and management skills, improve their performance, and in countless other ways add value to an organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best published book about coaching
The book is the best published book about coaching that I read. It is proper to several interests such as company leaders, consultants, academic faculty members and all those who wants to construct a better life and be recognized as a better person. It expands the concepts of the first edition and add value to the coaching literature.

4-0 out of 5 stars A first primer for executive coaching
Perhaps these are the world's greatest executive coaches, but I struggle with the suspicion that they are, more precisely, friends and associates of the editors. All but one or two of the contributors are Americans, so that I'm reminded of John Cleese's comment, when asked to compare Britons and Americans, that "when we Brits have a World Championship, we invite teams from other countries." Perhaps there are no excellent executive coaches from outside the United States. More likely, "world's greatest" was the publisher's idea.

But marketing hyperbole aside, this is a nice volume on an important and potentially lucrative topic. Executive coaching is definitely hot in the corporate world; a recent Harvard Business Review article (Sherman & Freas, 2004) puts estimated annual spending on executive coaching in the U.S. alone at $1 billion. Those who perform executive coaching include consultants and practitioners of various educational backgrounds, retired executives looking to share their career experience, a bevy of corporate training professionals looking to expand their talents past the classroom, and an assortment of others. It is my "unbiased" opinion that psychologists make the most effective executive coaches. Few non-psychologists have training in human dynamics, personality, learning, motivation, group cohesion, assessment, counseling skills, and other proficiencies necessary to fully effect insight and behavior change in organizational leaders. In another excellent HBR article, Berglas (2002), a psychotherapist, warned that untrained executive coaches have the potential for causing a great deal of damage to individuals and their companies by failing to recognize, or blatantly ignoring, personality disorders or even severe psychopathology that may exist in some they coach. Berglas recommended that, at the very least, executives designated for coaching receive a thorough psychological evaluation before coaching begins. While some business experience in a coach is also nice, I, as one who has both formal graduate training in business and experience working as an employee of two Fortune 100 companies, don't find it the sine qua non that non-psychologist coaches would have us and their potential clients believe.

In my view, one of the major shortcomings of this book is that only 1 of the 30 contributors has (or admits to having!) graduate training in psychology. Had the editors included excellent and well-known executive coaches who are also psychologists, rather than professionals described at the end of each chapter as "a world authority," "a frequent speaker," or (my favorite) "co-author of the most successful organizational behavior textbook of all time," their topic would have been better served.

As it is, the book is worth getting if you are thinking of going into executive coaching. The brief chapter by Edgar Schein (Chapter 2) is in my opinion worth the cost of the book. Schein argues that a distinction must be made between when a client defines the (coaching) situation as "one in which he or she wants individual help to work on a personal issue" and when "a manager asks someone to take on a coaching role to work with an individual to improve job performance or to overcome some developmental deficiencies" (p. 17). In the former instance, "the resulting process can be likened to counseling or therapy," whereas the latter is more analogous to "indoctrination or coercive persuasion" (p. 17). "If an organization `imposes' a coach and a predetermined direction of learning," Schein reminds us, "then by definition we are dealing with indoctrination, not coaching" (p. 18). Schein, a psychologist, states unequivocally the importance of this demarcation. I fear that many non-psychologist coaches would not understand the difference or would not be bothered by it.

Several chapters stand out as highlights. I have mentioned Schein's and would add the chapter by R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. (Chapter 25). Thomas provides a well laid out discussion of the dynamics of effective coaching relationships in general and also offers insights on "coaching in the context of teams as opposed to individual efforts" (p. 229). Brian Tracy (Chapter 12) constructs a how-to for retired executives considering coaching as a second career. Finally, the case studies in Part Four (Applications) are clarifying and enlightening and add a great deal to the book.

Besides original work, several of the chapters are a repackaging of previously published material, such as Paul Hersey and Roger Chevalier's chapter on "Situational Leadership and Executive Coaching" (Chapter 3) and James Kouzes and Barry Posner's chapter "When Leaders Are Coaches" (Chapter 16), which is an excerpt from their 2003 book. Marshall Goldsmith (one of the editors) contributes five chapters. Personally, I view these as resume-building for the publish-or-perish crowd, but if a reader buys the book, these can be considered a bonus.

Overall, the book serves as a fine primer for those thinking of going into executive coaching, and for those of us already there, it never hurts to benchmark against the "world's greatest."

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but overwhelming...
I am part of a team of folks leading the small group ministry at our church, consisting of about 40 groups.I have read all of Bill Donahue's small group books, and I appreciate much of what I have learned from his writing over the years. As expected, "Coaching Life-Changing Small Group Leaders" is well-written and offers many tips for those of us who want to make sure that our small group leaders are well-supported and equipped for their vital ministry role.

My critique of the book is that Donahue and Bowman seem to present a model that is utterly impractical and unsustainable.Specifically, the frequency that they expect their coaches to meet and communicate with their leaders is extremely intense. It is so intense that they assume that their coaches will step down from leading groups, which seems counterproductive in a ministry context when we're all clamoring to find capable group leaders.Though I think that what Donahue and Bowman describe sounds great, I just don't see how we can execute it.Maybe it can be achieved from the outset, but I definitely don't see how it can be retrofitted onto an existing small group ministry.

One other critique is the rather repetitive nature of the book.It is probably best utilized as a reference guide, rather than reading it from front to back as I did.If you were to simply hop around from section and section, as needed, by utilizing the very comprehensive table of contents, it would probably be less redundant.

To their credit, the authors do not assume that folks reading this coaching manual will adopt their model in its entirety. In fact, they explicitly give permission to pick and choose the parts that seem helpful, to contextualize their model for any other small group ministry. It is nice that the authors have the humility to understand that their model is not the only way to go.

In conclusion, anyone interested in coaching and supporting small group leaders would benefit from reading this book.It is comprehensive, instructive, and compelling. It paints an inspiring picture of how God works when we equip our group leaders for their crucial role.I'm not sure that many of us can actually do what Donahue and Bowman encourage us to do in this book, but even if we are only able to apply a portion of their recommendations, small groups and their leaders will benefit greatly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-Changing
The book truly lives up to it's title. No one knows more about small-groups & small group leadership than bill donahue (Trust me on this one). The practical ideas for leadership are great. The book is filled with scripture, the part where he covers leadership is likened to sheperding is excellent. If you want to take your small groups to another level & reproduce leaders who move with compassion not dictation, then buy this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Handbook
The essential relationship ofsmall group coaches as those who embrace, develop and nurturechurch leaders "over time" rings true in "Coaching Life Changing Small Group Leaders". With relationship building as the foremost attribute of coaches and small group leaders, authors Donahue and Bowman accentuate authentic interaction as the first step to intentionally shepherd leaders.
The authors attest that leaders want to be "fed" by their coaches, to be cared for, loved, to establish a mutual trust and open communication . Coaches are advised to listen deeply to their small group leaders, actively engage in their story, ask for clarification, keep the focus on the leaders and fight the temptation to move too quickly to solutions. In fact, Donahue and Bowman also indicate that coaches should not intervene with small group leaders, or sit in on their meetings, until a meaningful relationship is established with each leader."As trust develops, coaches are enabled to help leaders gain an accurate picture of their gifts and abilities."
In an easy to follow workbook format, the authors take the reader through the various coaching elements; to be visionary, to guide and encourage, to be personal, developmental and supportive, and to effectively bring out the best in the leaders. In essence, coaches have a heart for leaders, with an avid responsibility to equip them in key skills to becomeeffective in meeting the needs of group members.Donahue and Bowman also advocate that the coach and small group leader "dream together" about the effect on group members, the church as a whole and the community.
Specific key equipping skills include modeling and envisioning. Through modeling, coaches and leaders share what God is doing in their lives. They learn together how to live and lead by the Spirit. Healthy spiritual fitness entails prayer, worship, solitude and reading and listening to the Word.Envisioning involves space for the leaders to think or dream about their group. Donahue and Bowman advise coaches to work with their leaders to create a clear and compelling vision that captures their heart and motivates them to action. The authors assess that when the small group vision is clear and compelling, the "best thinking and energy come into play."
The authors also caution that churches can interfere in the relationship, modeling and envisioning stages of coaches and small group leaders when they insist that coaches serve as a "conduit" for the overall church vision."If that happens, the vision will not capture their (the group's) heart, and there will be little connection to the day-to-day activities of small group leaders." Instead, Bowman and Donahue suggest that coaches assist leaders in keeping their vision alive, to empower and to eventually enthusiastically "own the dream".
Overall, the church vision must have broad enough tenets to allow small groups to function earnestly and effectively within the church and its surrounding community.
Life changes in small group leaders often occur when the interaction with their coaches has become deeper, yet retains a delicate balance of continued shepherding and equipping by the coach on behalf of the leader.
I would recommend this practical handbook for those who lead and guide small group leaders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but potentially Overwhelming
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The insights are great and helpful to anyone who may be coaching or thinking about coaching small group leaders. There are specific guidelines and tips that will help coaches be more effective in their ministry.

The one negative that I see to what Donahue and Bowman have written is that there is too much here. The average coach working a full-time job will not be able to fulfill all of the expectations in this book, even at the 1:5 ratio that the authors recommend.

With that said, every small group coach that is looking for help in understanding what their job is and how to do it should read this book.Just don't expect to do everything that the book recommends

5-0 out of 5 stars small groups coaching - crucial piece in sustainability
One could choose to 'learn by doing'. Very tiring and stressful. Coaching small group leaders is, not surprisingly, as essential to success as coaching any athletic team. No coach? Enjoy the chaos. There will be blood on the field very soon. It's self-destructive to avoid this resource if a church is hoping to employ small groups. It is as good as the 'Leading Small Groups' book reviewed close by. Forms to use, goals toward which to strive, step-by-step pathways to follow, meeting agendas to fill in... what will you address with your leaders? What are the goals specific to each leader? How does the leader monitor the life of his or her group? What are the personal goals of the leader for 5G development (Growth, Gifts, Good stewardship...)? What are your goals as Coach? Where do you even find a list of possible goals? This is organized, educationally sound, Biblical, realistic. Thank you, Willow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I've read many basketball books. This book, along with Coaching Basketball Successfully by Morgan Wooten, are my favorites.

He covers all the individual basics that your player needs to works on like ball-handling, layups, jumpshots, passing, defense, and rebounding. These are things they need to do on their own, else they won't develop the skill.

He covers team offense and defense. He provides simple basic concepts. These are applicable to recreational leagues that have limited practice time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Success (aka Andrea Goeglein, Ph.D.) Talks about Transformational Life Coaching!
Transformational Life Coaching -By Dr. Cherie Carter Scott, "The Mother of Coaching"

There are many different indicators in today's world demonstrating that humanity has reached a new level of awareness and appreciation for its own existence. If we look at the shifts in the types of occupations being pursued (and sought after), the abundance of life coaches and personal development mentors is like a mirror held up to our collective psyche. It seems to say that life is a precious experience, and we simply want to be sure that we're present for it in every way possible. To coin a somewhat overused phrase: We seek to live authentically.

In 1977, long before having a "life coach" was something commonly discussed at Starbucks, Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott published her first book on the subject and began a career that eventually, would find her labeled, "The Mother of Coaching." New Species (published in 1978) was to become the first of many books Dr. Scott would write on personal development. The long list includes, "Negaholics," a series of `Rules' books - including "If Life is a Game, These are the Rules," and her most recent work, "Transformational Life Coaching."

Transformation Life Coaching throws open the doors to Life Coaching School and invites us all inside. Although written for those who either are, or espouse to become, mentors in the transformational movement, this book is an accessible "how to" for anyone. It welcomes all those who have spent time seeking to develop a better appreciation with their own life and how they intend to live it. Chapter 1 literally outlines what to look for and how to choose a coach, offering twenty-five important questions to discuss during the interview process.

In this book, Dr. Scott has created a virtual concordance of information, challenges for personal thought patterns and judgment, practical exercise and reference tools to use over and over. Embracing many global teachings, Dr. Scott often refers to the different chakras, or energy centers, as tools to release the ego and be of maximum service to others. As she explains, "You are in the process of opening up and taking control of your power," and by deeply understanding each energy center, we will be able to literally, "open and close each chakra at will."

Imagine being able to consciously open the fifth chakra (which controls speech and communication) in order to more fully participate in our marriage or work relationships - or being able to close down our first chakra, which embodies survival and security, so that we might be more risky and daring in our professional roles or fearlessly take on new adventures in life.

Dr. Scott has spent most of her professional life traveling the world and sharing her expertise on personal empowerment and development at every turn. On her website she shares that, "Writing a book is not done with the wave of a wand. It takes time to reflect and soul search for the universal truths related to each developmental phase." These same words could definitely be applied to the very journeys that Dr. Scott encourages us to make with our lives.

What we know about coaching is that it is not only sought after, but it is necessary in today's fast-paced world of endless challenges. From corporate teams to softball teams, being coached and coaching others on how to live as appreciatively and authenticity as possible is a proactive way to turn roadblocks into paving stones on your road of success.

To your own authentic and successful journey,
Dr. Success (aka Andrea Goeglein, Ph.D.)

I'm fascinated by the Life Coaching profession. It is one of my (many) goals to become a certified life coach. In the meantime, I read everything I can get my hands on regarding it.

This book is my current read.

It's a challenging book, with some great information.Practical exercises, thought provoking challenges for a coach's own mindset, and many different ways to look at coaching challenges make this a fascinating read.Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott is one of the pioneers of the profession, so it's very interesting to read her take on it.I come from a completely different place, spiritually, but she still has much to offer. If you're looking for a great book on Life Coaching, this is one I'd recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide!
Probably the best, easy-to-read book regarding coaching and mentoring for self-taught, busy managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars What They Forgot To Tell You When They Made You A Manager
First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.

Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.

Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.

Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.

About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.

Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book
I'm in an intensive training program (Denslow Brown's Coach Approach) to become an Organizer Coach. My practicum class is studying Silsbee's Presence-Based Coaching together. This book is so helpful. Silsbee articulates how and why every coach (or person who helps develop others, i.e., any supervisor) needs to focus on self-generation (building one's own skills, knowledge, abilities, awareness, etc.) as an essential matter. The book is well-written, well-organized, and I love it.

I have been relishing reading this book, its a treat. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to achinve excellence in coaching.

Doug Silsbee's book Presence-Based Coaching is a significant contribution to the field of coaching and valuable for anyone wanting to enhance their ability to become more present in their life and work. Through simple, yet profound practices Doug guides readers through understanding and most importantly experiencing presence as the book unfolds. He has artfully brought the ancient wisdom of mindfulness, meditation and body awareness and applied these practices to coaching. He carefully describes presence in all it's subtleties through illustrative client examples, showing how connecting with body awareness and meditation practices and other practices can bring us into presence.

As a coach, long time meditator and student of body work, I found this book valuable as a way to fine tune my practices, therefore I think it is a useful for practitioners of all levels, as well as those for whom this approach is new. This is a book that I will refer to time and time again to deepen my work with my clients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coach Gary Ward is the best ever.... Lopez, worst coach ever
The chapter by Coach Gary Ward is phenomenal.I played for Coach Ward at OSU and he is the best coach, best leader and best hitting instructor I have ever dealt with or been exposed to in my many years of baseball. My father is a baseball hitting instrutor and minor league coach and Coach Ward blew his mind with his teachings and the results he obtains. His hitting system is incredible and acheives tremendous results with the proper commitment. I don't have enough great things to say about Coach Ward as a coach, a person or as a hitting instructor.

The chapter by Andy Lopez, however, is horrific.I also played for Lopez while at UF and I can't take anything he says seriously and am always surprised that he remains employed at the Division 1 level. His actions have demonstrated to me that he is quite media savvy and works well to sell his product to school administration, but is a hypocrite and lacks leadership skills with his players.Anything he says about leadership, loyalty or character are merely aspirational items he is parroting from somewhere else and doesn't truly live by.You can take some good things away from the chapter, but it lost all credibility with me given the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars not bad!
This book received a 3 star rating for the following reason!! Its average. not bad, very basic on baseball.its been a while since i've read it so this review wont be helpful.

For too long, Christians have taken a delivery approach to spiritual formation:we memorize key verses and snappy concepts to spring on our un-churched neighbors; we provide fill-in-the-blank study courses for believers who want to grow in faith; we strive to tell, teach and transfer what we know. The results? Stagnant believers, lowered expectations and an avoidance of spiritual conversations. There must be a better approach. What if you could take a discovery approach to spiritual formation? What if you didn?t have to be an expert with all the answers but you could ask questions that helped others expand their commitment to following Christ? What if you could take a coach approach? And what if this approach were easy to learn, simple to apply, and bore fruit in the lives of those around you? Here is such an approach. Faith Coaching teaches you to leverage the power of coaching conversations to help others find and follow their spiritual path. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for those involved in helping ministries
Faith coaching gives a fresh perspective on the coaching approach to helping others move forward in their spiritual walk. The information was presented in a manner that even those unfamiliar with coaching could understand, and the authors insights were appropriate and helpful. I would recommend this book for anyone working in a helping ministry, or who may have an interest in coaching as a means to help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Questions that listen
For those who would walk alongside another person who is searching for faithful responses to life's inevitable dilemmas, Faith Coaching is a sensitive and practical resource for a much needed spiritual practice. The key for the would-be "faith coach" (caring friend, mentor, counselor, pastor, is to ask the right kinds of questions rather than to give advice or interject their own perspectives. For experienced counselors, the concept will remind you of "active listening," but with a contemporary slant. The authors provide excellent training examples and narratives. The spiritual praxis of faith coaching is well-grounded in the authors' healthy understanding of evangelism. The book is highly readable and teachable.Individuals and congregations will find it an engaging text to use in preparation for various types of lay ministry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Significant Contribution
"FAITH COACHING provides a much needed perspective on spiritual formation. The coaching expertise of the authors combined with their passion for authentic faith formation is on every page. The case studies and very practical nature of the writings are certain to bear much fruit in a world where many have become skeptical of the faith and the church."

- Edward Hammet, PCC, author of Making Shifts without Making Waves:
A Coach-Approach to Soul Leadership

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling AND Competent Resource!
While I expected to learn new ways to impact others through coaching, FAITH COACHING has also been life-giving and faith-building for me personally. Written in a very personable style, sharing a theology of coaching, and offering numerous case studies, I'm sure this will become a trusted resource for many who want to incorporate a coach approach to their life ministry. 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
I read this book because of the documentary "the long green line".I am a runner not a coach but I still thought this book was worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and Insightful
Other reviews here criticize this book for outdated training methods, over-worked athletes with lack of concern for a runner's "career" and too much focus on performing NOW, not being able to apply recruiting methods to smaller schools, and too much York H.S. bragging.I will discredit each of these concerns here.

The training methods at York H.S. have undergone little change throughout the years, as well they shouldn't.It is by far the most successful high school running program in the nation. It still is today, over a decade after the book was published. If Newton's training methods are outdated, why then have so-called modern methods failed to put an end to York's dynasty? The reason is, as explained in the book, it still works and there's still nothing better out there.

The book is a guide to successful training for the H.S. runner, not collegiate athletes and not olympians. What fraction of high school top seven runners will actually be able to make a "career" of the sport?Seriously. The training is all about drawing peak performance out of your runners on the day(s) you need it. For over 99% of these runners, there is no tomorrow. There is no "career". Conference, Regionals/Sectionals or State meets are the culmination of their "career".It IS their olympics!Trust me. I know. I was a top 7 York H.S. runner, who happened to survive the workouts, like most others, just fine.

Of course, the recruiting model will not yield the same number of runners at any size H.S.The point is, no matter what size the school, the more you can initially recruit, the more potential talent you have to foster. With most states having several classes of competition based on enrollment, I don't see how this is an issue. For a large school, recruiting 150 Freshmen vs the usual 50-60 is the same as a small school bringing out 30 instead of 10.

As far as bragging about the successes and celebrations of York H.S., I had read it more like something to look forward to at your own school once you have successfully duplicated the training model.Regardless, with a winning record and turnout of All-American athletes, any self-indulgence by Newton in this book has been earned.

Bottom line, any coach who wishes to produce a successful H.S. cross country team will do well to take every word in this book to heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
This is a great read for runners. The cross country and track coach at my school has his athletes reading it. Lots of good info according to coach AND athletes.

4-0 out of 5 stars From the pen of the legend.
Legendary coach Joe Newton inspires runners not only at York Community High School in Elmhurst IL, but many more across the state and nation. This is less of a technical book -- for that go to Daniels' Running Formula -- and more of an insight to a coach and a program.Definitely worth a read!

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited Usefulness
There are very few current books directly intended to function as how-to guides for high-school cross-country coaches. This title's durability has, I think, more to do with the lack of competition in this niche (and with the author's level of renown) than with its intrinsic merit.

Joe Newton's approach to program development is simple.Recruit, if you can, huge numbers of runners from the student body, train them at very high mileages and intensities, and let the cross-country gods sort them out. While this Darwinist approach may yield some good results at very large schools with three-season running continuity (XC-indoor track-outdoor track), at small schools without year-round running, Newton's methods (if taken at face value) are likely to be a formula for team-shattering injury rates and rapid demoralization.

As regards technical matters, Newton's outlook was antique even when the book was published a decade ago.He disdains consideration of biomechanics and running form and chuckles at the notion that it might matter how runners breathe. If you have 150+ runners in your program (as Newton's York High School does), well, sure, those that have naturally fine form will reveal themselves as contenders for your top 7.Those of us with only 150 (or even 250) boys or girls in the whole high school might not be so lucky.

Much of the book is taken up with anectodes about Newton's undeniably impressive record of success in a very competitive region. However, while this may be entertaining to those who have an attachment to York High School or an interest in the recent history of scholastic running in northern Illinois, it comes across largely as unnecessary chest-thumping to those outside these circles.

The most commendable feature I find in Newton's book is its strong emphasis on discipline, athlete responsibility, and clear communication of expectations from coach to runner. With regard to this area, Newton's old-school toughness represents a refreshing change from the kind of compromising and equivocating attitude evident in too many high-school coaching staffs.

Many fine and successful high school coaches put their training programs and general observations on their school and personal websites. For beginning (or more experienced) coaches looking for ideas on workouts or program development, such websites represent a resource far superior to Joe Newton's book.

Product Description

This book achieves something which is rare in professional development books. It demonstrates how to integrate core instructional elements into successful practice.... It should become a central text for study at the classroom, school, and district level.
    - Anthony J. Alvarado, former Superintendent, District 2, New York and former Chancellor of Instruction, San Diego City Schools

What do literacy coaches do? Who do they coach? How does it work? Katherine Casey is a veteran literacy coach, and on the first page of Literacy Coaching she gets down to business: "I coach teachers in their classrooms, demonstrating lessons, working alongside teachers as they teach, problem solving together how to better meet the needs of their students." From there she presents the most authoritative, comprehensive, and focused guide on literacy coaching available.

Literacy Coaching takes you inside today's main coaching models, exploring their roles and responsibilities. Beginning with what coaches do, Casey provides real-life examples of what you'll need to know and what abilities the job requires, as well as crucial but often overlooked details such as how to build a relationship with your principal and how to assess the strengths and needs of the teachers you'll work with. Then she presents a variety of professional development structures that help you deliver smart, targeted instructional support where and when teachers need it most. Literacy Coaching gets into the nitty-gritty, offering experience-honed advice on these and numerous other important coaching functions:

  • gathering materials, gaining entry, and getting started
  • developing trusting relationships
  • taking notes while observing teachers and students
  • using data to uncover areas of instructional need
  • teaching side by side with a host teacher and debriefing afterward
  • coaching strategies and language
  • running powerful workshops, visitations, and meetings

Filled with examples of completed instructional observation forms, graphic organizers, correspondence and conversations with faculty and administrative constituencies, and classroom vignettes that illustrate how coaching really looks, Literacy Coaching is the ideal companion for a practicing coach or consultant and especially for teachers who want to become one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.
I went online looking for a book that would explain some methods for life coaching.Maybe with some information included regarding qualities a life coach must possess in or to succeed, or some helpful tips on getting started. This may be a good book for someone looking for a marketing plan, business information, or how to make more money at life coaching than most do, however it was not the type of book I was looking for.It served no purpose for my research paper on life coaching (for school) and was a complete waste of money as it did not serve my purpose or answer my questions. As I said, if you're looking for a marketing schematic, this is the book for you, but if you're looking for information on how to do the job, this book won't help.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book indeed
This is a very good book for coaches who wish to advance their practice and leverage their time and income. This book is all you will need to start a very good coaching practice and you really won't need the other products her company offers if you do your own research and are truly an expert in your niche.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far so GREAT!
Not even half way thru this book yet, due to the high level of inspiration and ideas... I keep stopping and brainstorming like crazy...but so far Milana is my new BFF.

Her down to earth, cutting clarity is so refreshing, she makes you want to succeed simply by the simplicity of her own success.

That plus TONS of step by step examples of marketing strategies, which I love, and details about how to apply them.

Very pleased and excited to move forward...and to finsish the book!...I definitely aspire to her well balanced and keen sense of direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This year one of my business goals was to kick off a coaching program for my business. Coaching seemed to be such a big mystery. I had no idea where to begin or how to get started on the right track.

Imagine my surprise when I heard an interview with Milana Leshinsky online. It was just the direction that I needed, but I needed more information. I looked up her book and found it here. It is EXACTLY what I needed.

In Coaching Millions, Milana covers everything that we need to be a successful coach. It is truly the GO-TO resource. I am so thankful that I found it to help me reach for my goals. Just look at all it covers:

How to get started so you can be a success
How to pick your coaching model
How to price coaching services
How to build a market presence
How to develop passive coaching income

Plus, all throughout the book, Milana shares secrets to success in business and coaching.

When I purchased the book, I was looking for help setting up my coaching business. I found SO MUCH MORE! This book is the most important resource that I have found this year for my business. Excellent resource! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great
This is by far the best book I've raed on Life Coaching. It is easy to understand and the ideas are great and it works. I tried one idea on how to generate new business and within one day had 6 new clients!! I immediately ordered the Business Coaching Handbook from the same author

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Coaching
I found this book to be both informational and inspirational.
It helps both new coaches and old coaches to better undertand the
process of forwarding persons toward their goals.I recommend it!
George Dye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coaching techniques
I've read a few coaching books but none so detailed and organized as this one. The author has created a program that moves chapter to chapter, from beginning techniques to more advanced techniques. If followed in order, the potential coach with learn from start to finish how to begin a coaching session, what to say, how to organize the session correctly, how to communicate effectively with the client and motivate them to improve their lives. It also contains information on how to start your own coaching business. There are many valuable techniques to choose from as well. I was more than impressed with this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good resource in ways but one major flaw ..
This is a helpful book in ways, great at pointing out some of the coaching tips that are useful, BUT, she states that you do not necessarily need to have a qualification to be a coach - this is so wrong - people who do not know what they are doing can do damage in coaching as in any field. It is these kind of people that give qualified coaches a bad name - I think it is such an irresponsible statement to make.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Coaching Starter Kit
If you are thinking about becoming a life coach this is the book for you. Not only is it inspirational it also has practical information about how to set up a life coaching practice. It is in three distinct parts the first dealing clearly and effectively with life coaching basics, how to start a practice and make a success. The second part comprises of very clear and simple to follow usage of NLP within life coaching. There are several case studies and examples which make the process not only interesting to read but also easy to put into practise. The final part uses an adaptation from the Spiral Dynamics double helix model to clearly define its uses in life coaching. Not an easy task but one which the author has achieved excellently. I highly recommend this book not only for life coaches but also for anyone involved in the coaching world. A must have book. I hope you enjoy and benefit from reading this book as much as I have. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. ... Read more

Product Description

Evaluation-based performance management systems are flawed, ineffective and inefficient. Markle shows why and describes in detail an exciting new system based on a coaching, not a coercing, paradigm. His catalytic approach integrates performance management into the entire people development process. Markle provides tools that can be used to quickly and easily measure the effectiveness and efficiency of any performance management system. With examples, forms, and hands on guidance, Markle's book is essential for HR professionals, business executives, and for organizational development specialists in corporations and academia.

After two decades of hands-on experience with performance management systems in some of the world's most well recognized organizations, Markle has come to propound what he calls a universal law of modern business. People hate performance reviews. Drawing upon his studies of and experience with systems theory and illustrating his points with real-life examples, Markle explains why employees and managers both have come to regard the ubiquitous performance evaluation as industry's poorest performing, most ineffective, and least efficient personnel practice.By digging down to its roots, he helps us understand why attempts to correct the flawed system fail. He provides an innovative way to measure their ineffectiveness and inefficiency and then introduces his catalytic coaching to replace them.

Markle shows how his system is superior to others in five key business outcomes: 1) positive behavioral change; 2) motivation to work hard; 3) retention of key contributors; 4) internal promotions and succession; and 5) prevention of and protection from lawsuits. Not only is catalytic coaching more effective, it is also more efficient: it requires far less time and paperwork to implement and maintain. Markle gives his readers all of the forms, instruments and detailed instructions they need to operationalize his system. Business executives, senior HR professionals, and organization development specialists will benefit particularly from his presentation, as will other managers, executives, and supervisors, all of whom must learn to take ownership of their responsibilities to their organizations and themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blood from a turnip.
If performance reviews worked, managers would look forward to giving them and subordinates would prize their value. But they don't.Why?Because, as Garold Markle points out, they are pretentious in concept and seldom, if ever, are performed in a way that accomplishes anything a rational person would consider worth the effort expended in giving them. This book explains what's wrong with performance reviews and how they are typically conducted and, if you feel compelled to give them, prescribes how they might be best conducted to help employees move ahead in their development.

Catalytic Coaching diligently lays out the problems and hazards that need negotiating when giving a performance review. It explains the importance of a manager working within the employee's mind-set and how to intelligently get the employee to take the lead in evolving a personal development agenda that the employee finds personally valid. I found this book a very intelligent read. What's more, I found it clearly written with in-depth examples that vividly illustrate the step-by-step method Markle advocates for making performance reviews the developmental experience everybody would like to see.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unscientific Nonsense
The author spends nearly half the book with criticsm of performance measurement, a technique currently practiced by the vast majority of fortune 500 companies. He then sets up a "model" for assessing performance measurement techniques and uses this to "prove" that such techniques must fail, are totally useless and have adverse impacts on any organization deploying them. He then indicates that he alone knows what's best (apparently the rest of us are fools). Having poured scorn on his competition, he then puts forward the technique of Catalytic Coaching but of course fails to subject it to the same model that he used in his diatribe against performance measurement. The truth, as any management professional well knows, is that if you don't measure it, you can't manage it! Avoiding the issue does not resolve it. This book is unscientific nonsense dressed up in the language of science in order to deceive the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an important book for business leaders
Anyone who has been through a performance review or had to deliver one knows they are not providing the performance benefit they were designed to provide. In fact, they are usually demotivating and have a negative impact on performance. As a consultant to management and coach to CEOs, my experience has been that everyone hates the process, it doesn't deliver and it's painful.Garold Markle has an alternative which is working, is constructive, and leads to a feedback-rich culture of performance.Contrast this to the blame-oriented approach that we inherited. This is an important work.I recommend it highly. His approiach is clear and the tools supportive.

5-0 out of 5 stars caring , coaching and compassion with accountability
In my role as an advisor to CEO's, Presidents, and owners of midsize to large corporations,Gary's book has been very helpful and enlightening. After reading Gary's book, I highlighted several parts of it to share with those final decision makers. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Most have purchased the book and shared it with their top staff for implimentation. Gary's approach of Catalytic Coaching integrates, in a clear way, the elements of caring, coaching, and compassion, with accountability, that so many business are searching for these days. I would recommend buying the book first and then contacting Gary Markle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catalytic Coaching Effective Even in Large Law Firm

While I was not able to directly utilize theworksheets and action plans set forth in the appendix, the balance of thebook was miraculously relevant to and instrumental in getting control ofour personnel difficulties. This is an excellent purchase for anyone taking on the task of coaching U6 and under.I am a second year U5 coach and had no clue where to begin. The book addressed most of my concerns. If you are new at soccer or have been around for a while - coaching 3,4 and 5 year olds is a far different beast that your older kids.Great book - lots of personal stories that will make you laugh and most of all encouraging you as a coach to have fun with this age group.Because it is all about fun for U6 and under.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver for new coaches!!
My husband and I decided to coach our 5 year old son's soccer team this fall, because he had a prettynegative experience with his last volunteer coach and we wanted to make sure this soccer season was more fun. Neither of us had ever coached before, but this book really saved our bacon. It helped confirm what we already believed, that soccer for this age group should be about having fun, learning skills and building friendships, not about competition. The drills in this book are all presented in the form of fun games, and the kids loved them! As a result, we had very few behavior problems with our kids, tons of enthusiasm, and almost 100% attendance at every practice and game. Coincidentally, we also won every game we played, even though we didn't focus on the competitive aspects of the sport. I think we won because our kids were so happy and excited about playing. Their parents all expressed appreciation and gratitude to us. In short, this book is golden... buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
Fantastic book!!! If you're looking to coach a young team, then buy this book!

I'm a first time coach for 5 year old girls team. This helped me better understand how to teach them. Just in the second practice, the girls started to get a good handle on dribbling. Had our first game yesterday and they really did great handling the ball/scoring goals. The practice schedules in the back are very good and fast paced. I recommend even cutting them down to 8-minutes each, as there's always something that delays the breaks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide
Having played soccer for decades, this book helped me when it came time to coach my first very young team. There are some great ideas and the book is very good at preparing a coach for the mindset of coaching very young players.Pick it up - well worth having in your bag of tricks.

Product Description
Coaching, counseling, and mentoring can dramatically improve employee productivity and satisfaction. But there’s a big difference between continuously encouraging employees to do their jobs well (coaching), attempting to fix poor performance (counseling), and helping top performers excel (mentoring). Unfortunately, most managers don’t truly understand how and when to do each. Coaching, Counseling & Mentoring provides helpful tools like self-assessments and real-life scenarios, and gives managers specific, practical guidance on using these techniques to improve the performance of all their people.

This updated and revised second edition includes useful scripts for talking to employees about sensitive issues, and new material on topics including working with off-site employees, what to say when an employee denies a problem exists, whether or not to coach temps and part-timers, how to draw the line between the mentoring and supervisory role, and what to do when counseling fails. This is an essential guide for managers who want to build their confidence and skill in getting the most from their people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Managers and Supervisors
Coaching, Counseling & Mentoring: How to Choose & Use the Right Technique to Boost Employee Performance
Stone's book well covers the landscape of these three topics. Her information is accurate, practical, and presented in an easy-to-read format. Stone's illustrative stories demonstrate her points and bring the material to life. This book fills a void in the marketplace and does so in a way that very effective. "Coaching, Counseling & Mentoring" is an excellent tool for managers and supervisors. I recommend it without qualification.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview for managers
Along with the highly competitive market, comes the high competition for companies to recruit and maintain these top performers.Employees have more choices today.Employees who do not feel challenged, or adequately compensated, will move on.It is not just about money anymore, either.Keeping top performers is a lot more than just a salary figure. So, how do companies keep their best people?

According to author Florence Stone, the answer is by helping employees excel.Since most motivational experts agree that most people want to better themselves it does not require threats or force to get employees to improve. It does require a system that will allow them to grow.

This book is exactly about that.It is about how to coach, counsel, and mentor employees to success. These three areas each have a distinct role to play in any firm:
1.Coaching helps all employees. The art of coaching will improve employee's job performance, as well as give them greater potential to move onto more difficult assignments and jobs.
2.Counseling is used to address problem performers.More often than not, these employees have bad habits that have risen to the level of chronic. The author says that by investing ten percent of time on these people using counseling can save a firm from spending fifty percent of its time fixing problems in the future.
3.Mentoring, writes the author, is reserved for the most talented employees, the true top performers. These people will provide the greatest return on investment for time spent helping them advance. If these people are ignored, they will quickly leave the firm and find someone else to nurture and develop their talents.

Each of these areas requires different skills to be executed effectively. Those skills are presented in this book to help persons truly master the arts of coaching, counseling, and mentoring.

3-0 out of 5 stars Coaching, Counseling & Mentoring: How to Choose & Use the Right Tool to Boost Employee Performance
Generally a good tool for assisting employees who need some direction to improve performance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good Guide on the Theory AND the Practices
Knowing the distinction between the three roles and functions (see title) is essential to be any good at either or all. Dah...
And yet I wish more people would take the time and effort to get and read this book and know the differences.
This book not only provides sound theory on all three subjects, but it also provides very good practical advice on how to practice either.
If you want to be knowledgeable on these subjects, either for bettering your own performance as a manager or for knowing when and why to hire specific professionals, just read this book. Trust me. ... Read more
