Excerpt: McFarlane Sports Picks is the name given to the line of sports-related action figures released by McFarlane Toys, a company founded by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. The figures feature lifelike renderings of select stars in the four most popular sports in North America - hockey, football, baseball and basketball. The company has official licensing rights to the major professional leagues of each of these sports. An avid sports fan, collector of sports memorabilia and a former part-owner of a professional hockey team (Edmonton Oilers), Todd McFarlane created McFarlane Sports Picks in 2000 with the release of a series of NHL hockey players. The figures were licensed by the NHLPA but not by the league itself; as such, the players' jerseys featured the colours of the teams for which they played, but the NHLPA logo in place of the team logos (which the NHL holds rights to). The figures proved to be popular enough with fans and collectors that the NHL signed a licensing agreement with McFarlane, allowing future releases to be branded with league and team logos. Later in 2001, McFarlane Sports Picks released Series 1 of their NHL line, and Series 1 ... Read more

Excerpt: Lionel Pretoria Conacher, MP (May 24, 1900 May 26, 1954), nicknamed "The Big Train", was Canada's top all-around athlete in the 1920s, excelling in Canadian football, ice hockey, lacrosse, baseball, boxing and wrestling. He later became a politician and was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and the Canadian House of Commons. Conacher was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1900. He grew up in poverty and was one of ten children. His father was a Toronto teamster. Lionel quit school after the 8th grade to help support his family. He soon realized that sports offered a way out of poverty. He then pursued athletic success. Lionel first played organized football from 19121916 with a Toronto junior team, the Capitals, where he played middle wing (offensive tackle). Canadian football was different then from what it is today. There were fourteen players a side and a touchdown was worth only five points (as it had been in the U. S. before 1912). The Capitals won the city championship each year Conacher was a member of the team. In 1919 he played halfback on the Ontario Rugby Football Union's (ORFU) Capitals. In 1920 Conacher joined the Toronto Rugby Club in the senior division of the ORFU. He went on to play for...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1103472 ... Read more

Excerpt: NFL on NBC is the brand given to NBC Sports coverage of National Football League games until 1998, when NBC lost the NFL American Football Conference rights to CBS. NFL coverage returned to NBC on Sunday, August 6, 2006 under the title NBC Sunday Night Football, beginning its pre-season with coverage of the NFL Hall of Fame Game. The program (which has aired under numerous program titles and formats) actually goes back to the beginnings of NBC's relationship with the NFL in 1939, when they (technically, NBC's flagship station out of New York, which was then known as W2XBS) aired the first-ever televised pro football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the now defunct Brooklyn Dodgers football team. By 1955, NBC became the televised home to the NFL Championship Game, paying $100,000 to the league. The 1958 NFL Championship Game played at Yankee Stadium between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants went into sudden death overtime. This game, known since as the "Greatest Game Ever Played", was seen by many throughout the country and is credited with increasing the popularity of professional football in the late 1950s and early 1960s. From 1955-1963, NBC televised the NFL Championship Game, the precursor to the Super Bowl. The contract for the title game was separate than the regular season contract held by CBS, who started televising NFL games in 1956. Prior to 1962, each team had its own individual television contract. NBC also had the rights to the televise Pittsburgh ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1942914 ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1986 Canadian Football League season is considered to be the 33rd season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 29th Canadian Football League season. The Canadian Football League decided that all nine teams will play 18 games each, in the regular season. The playoff structure was revised to allow a fourth place team from one of the divisions to qualify for the playoffs if that fourth place team has earned more points in the regular season standings than the third place team from the other division. Until 1992, however, that team stayed in its own division for the playoffs (the league began American expansion in 1993, changing the rules along the way). The four qualifiers in one division played semi-finals and a final while the two qualifiers in the other division playing a home-and-home, total-points, 2-game playoff. This was somewhat unfair to the first place team, who might no longer receive a first-round bye based simply on what happened at the bottom of its own division. (The current format, which began in 1996 after the league ceased its American operations, sees a fourth-place qualifier cross-over to the other division, essentially becoming the third-place team in that division.) As it turned out, 1986 was the only year this playoff format was needed. The Canadian Football League and the Canadian Football League Players Association agreed on a new three-year agreement. The Concordes changed their name to the Alouettes, on the 40th anniversary of the founding of the original Montreal Alouettes. The Sports Network started to carry live coverage of the first round of the 1986 Canadian College Draft from coast-to-coast. The Winnipeg Blue Bom...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2821869 ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A try is the major way of scoring points in rugby league and rugby union football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining 'grounding the ball' and the 'in-goal' area (see next section). The term try comes from try at goal, signifying that originally, grounding the ball only gave the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal. A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground in the in-goal area and an attacking player who is in the field of play or in-goal. (Oddly enough, the official name of the extra point in American football according to NFL rules is the try.) In the laws of both forms of rugby, the term touch down formally refers only to grounding the ball by the defensive team in their in-goal. Although occasionally people refer to a try as a 'touchdown', the correct usage for the action is 'grounding the ball'. ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1996 Canadian Football League season is considered to be the 43rd season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 39th Canadian Football League season. At the CFL's Board of Governors Meetings, it was decided that the league would revert to its original All-Canadian team format in February, 1996. The San Antonio Texans, Shreveport Pirates, Memphis Mad Dogs, and Birmingham Barracudas ceased operations and folded. In March, a dispersal draft was held for all players of U.S.-based teams, with the exception of one. The 1995 Grey Cup champion Baltimore Stallions were relocated to Montreal to become the new Montreal Alouettes. Up until this time, the city of Montreal had been without Canadian football for nine seasons. At the same time, the NFL returned to Baltimore with their new entity called the Ravens. With the removal of the American teams, the CFL realigned the divisions back to the original "East-West" format. With the return of the Alouettes, the team was placed in the East Division and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were placed back into the West Division, after 10 seasons. Excerpt: John "Jake" Ireland (born on December 1, 1946) in Hamilton, Ontario) is a former referee in the Canadian Football League, who wore uniform number 62, and current lead replay official for the league's instant replay command centre. Ireland, from Townsend, Ontario, attended Burlington Central High School from 1960 to 1965. Ireland's father, Garnet Ireland, as well as his three brothers and a sister, also attended BCHS. While at Central, Ireland participated in basketball, cross-country running, and curling. He was also an active member of Students Council, and was proud to win a Mathematics Award in 1964. While attending McMaster University, Ireland was contacted by a high school friend to begin officiating flag football for the newly created Burlington Minor Football Association. Soon after, Ireland was contacted to begin officiating for the Lakeshore Football Association, including refereeing games for the Burlington Braves Club. It was during a Braves game that Ireland was recruited by the Canadian Football League to begin his career with the CFL as a referee. A career that would find him participating in 555 games and refereeing in 15 Grey Cup games. Although he retired from his full-time career with Stelco Inc. after 31 years, Ireland continued active as a CFL referee until the conclusion of the 2008 CFL season, his 30th, and his final on-field game, the 96th Grey Cup. On June 26, 2009, the CFL announced that Ireland is the lead replay official for the new Replay Command Centre that decides all instant replay decisions starting in the 2009 CFL season. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5137444 ... It was renamed as the Club Sportif MAA or just MAA (Montreal MAA) in 1999 after a brush with bankruptcy, but is still widely known as the MAAA. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the MAA was one of the most important sporting institutions in Canada, and North America, with affiliated teams winning ice hockey's Stanley Cup and Canadian football's Grey Cup and cricket. Mr. McLeod, Bicycle Club, Montreal, QC, 1885 The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association came into existence June 1881 and began as a confederation of three sporting clubs: The Montreal Snow Shoe Club, The Montreal Bicycle Club, and The Montreal Lacrosse Club. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A running back (RB) is the position of a player on an American or Canadian football team who usually lines up in the offensive backfield. There are usually one or two running backs on the field for a given play, depending on the offensive formation. A running back may be a halfback (HB for short, in certain contexts also referred to as a tailback) or a fullback (FB). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Should have been called 'The first fifty-five years of the CFL', + Rugby-Football thrown in for good measure
The first fifty-five years of the CFL are
chronicled along with Canadian Rugby-Foot-
ball going back to 1868, one year after
conferation, 1867. The CFL needs to re-
vise it's history to EXCLUDE the Rugby
stuff, because the modern CFL younger fan
could care less about that sport unless
they are into Rugby as a SEPARATE sport.

Canadian Football separated intself from
Rugby in 1909 when the Governour-General,
George Albert Henry Grey donated the tro-
phy for the 'Football Champion of Canada.'
A good read though and an early contribu-
tion to chronicling this rescillent Pro
League. ESPN's Christopher Berman is a fan! ... Read more
