Excerpt: Hammerfest -The town is named after an old anchorage. The first element is hammer, referring to a number of large rocks, good for mooring boats, called Hamran (Old Norse: Hamarr - steep mountainside). The Hamran were covered up in land reclaiming during the early post-war years. The last element is fest, from Old Norse festr which means 'fastening' (for boats). The coat-of-arms is from relatively modern times. They were granted on 16 December 1938. The arms of Hammerfest, a silver polar bear on a red background, were prepared for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the town's foundation in 1939. The polar bear was chosen as a symbol for the fishing in the polar seas north of Norway. The polar bear itself is not native to mainland Norway. Painting by Konstantin Korovin, inspired by the Aurora Borealis in HammerfestMany grave sites dating back to the Stone Age can be found here. This location was an important fishing and Arctic hunting settlement for a long time before it was given market town rights by royal decree of Christian VII of DenmarkNorway in 1789. During the Napoleonic Wars, DenmarkNorway was attacked by Great Britain and forced into the conflict on the side of Napoleon and France. As one of the main centres of commerce and transportation in western Finnmark, Hammerfest became a natural target of the Royal Navy's blockading warships. Thus, on the request of local merchants, the town received four six-pound cannon from the central armoury in Trondheim. Subsequently, a 50-man strong coastal defence militia was formed to defend Hammerfest. A number of merchants formed the officer corps of the militia, while Sea Samis and Kvens were mobilized as gun crews a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=379896 ... Read more

Excerpt: Doug Flutie -Flutie was born in Catonsville, Maryland to Lebanese-American parents. His family moved to Melbourne Beach, Florida when he was 6, where his father, Richard, worked as an engineer in the aerospace industry. After the dramatic slow-down of the space program in the mid-1970s, the Flutie family again moved in 1976 to Natick, Massachusetts. His nickname was "The Wee One". The young Flutie was exceptional at arithmetic; his mother, Joan, would take him grocery shopping and ask him to add up the prices of the items bought in his head before they got to the check-out. According to his mother, Flutie's final totals were never more than $2.00 off. Flutie graduated from Natick High School, where he played for the "Redmen". He was an All-League performer in football, basketball and baseball. Flutie played football for Boston College, the only Division I-A school to recruit him, from 1981 to 1984, and won the Heisman Trophy and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award in his senior year (1984). Excerpt: The Metro Bowl is the championship game for secondary school football teams in the Greater Toronto Area. The game is usually held in early December at the Rogers Centre, in downtown Toronto. The current title holders are the Markham Marauders. The current format for deciding the Metro Bowl pits the Champions of the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association (CISAA), York Region Athletic Association (YRAA), Toronto District Secondary School Athletic Association (TDSSAA), and Lake Ontario Secondary School Association (LOSSA) in a semi-final setup. The two leagues which win the semi-final games meet in the semi-finals the following year. This guarantees that a representative from the two leagues which did not advance to the final will be represented the following season. Note: Following their conference victory, St. Michaels had to play a quarter-final game against the Simcoe County champions with the winner advancing to the semi-finals. St. Michaels College won this game 40-32 over the Bear Creek Kodiaks. Excerpt:Michael Lutrell "Pinball" Clemons, O.Ont (born January 15, 1965, in Dunedin, Florida, U.S.) is the current Vice-Chair for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Clemons also played with the Argos for twelve seasons, and twice served as their head coach. His #31 jersey is one of only four that has been retired by the Argos. He is one of their most famous former players and also one of the most popular professional athletes in the history of Toronto. Clemons has stated that he feels CFL football is the best football in the world. Clemons is 5 ft 6 in(167 cm) tall and weighs 170 pounds (77 kg). Clemons graduated with an economics degree from the College of William and Mary where he played running back and return specialist on the football team, as well as playing soccer for a year. In his four-year college football career, he compiled 4,778 all-purpose yards and was named a Division I-AA all-American. In 1987, Clemons was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League. During the 1987 NFL season, Clemons played in eight games, predominantly as a punt returner, where he collected 19 returns for 162 yards. The following year, Clemons tried out for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but was cut during their training camp. When Clemons first joined the Toronto Argonauts in 1989, head coach Bob O'Billovich nicknamed him "Pinball" because of his running style. His diminutive size and extraordinary balance allowed him to bounce between defensive players much like a pinball inside a pinball machine. During home games, The Who song Pinball Wizard would play on the P.A. whenever Pinball was involved in a great play. In his first game with ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=759681 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Canadian Football Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit corporation located in Hamilton, Ontario that celebrates great achievements in Canadian football. It is an open to the public institution. It includes displays about the Canadian Football League, Canadian university football and Canadian junior football history. It includes a gift shop and the Hall recently opened a website. The main feature of the Hall is the central portion of the museum where inducted members, each with a metal bust depicting their head, are displayed. There are also featured displays that highlight each Canadian Football League team's history, and an interactive field goal kicking exhibit. Once during every CFL season, the Hall sponsors the induction ceremony of former players. Included in the "Hall of Fame Weekend" is an affiliated Hamilton Tiger-Cats game. Traditionally, the inducted players will come to the Hall and make an acceptance speech in front of the building where their newly sculpted bust is unveiled. A player must be retired from the game for at least five years before being eligible for consideration. A Hall of Fame voting committee is composed of sports writers, selected CFL executives and inducted members. The Canadian Hall of Fame officially opened on November 28, 1972. It is located in downtown Hamilton, beside the former Hamilton City Hall and Family Courts Building, which is inside the former Andrew Carnegie library on Main Street, between Bay Street and MacNab Street. The Canadian Hall of Fame is easily identified by the slightly-larger-than-life metal sculpture Touchdown, featuring a successful receiver being tackled. Excerpt: The 1995 Baltimore Stallions season was the second in the history of the Baltimore CFL franchise. It would be the final season in Baltimore as the team relocated to Montreal, Quebec. The team ended its existence with a victory in the Grey Cup. The Stallions were the first American based football team to win the Grey Cup. Despite the Stallions success, attendance dropped. The club only sold 9,000 season tickets. Mike Pringle ran for 484 playoff yards and four touchdowns in three games. The result was that the Baltimore Stallions made their second straight appearance in the Grey Cup. The 83rd Grey Cup was played between the Baltimore Stallions and the Calgary Stampeders at Taylor Field in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Stallions won the game by a score of 37-20. It marked the only time that an American-based team won the Grey Cup. Not one television station from Baltimore sent a crew to Regina to cover the Grey Cup game. Only 200 fans showed up for the Stallions Grey Cup celebration. After the season, other Baltimore Stallions' received awards and accomplishments in the CFL, which are: CFL Awards Defense Special Teams 1995 CFL All-Stars Offense Defense Special Teams In late 1995, Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell announced his intention to relocate his NFL club to Baltimore, where they would be rechristened the Baltimore Ravens. This would have made the Stallions the only CFL club ever to directly compete with the NFL, whose season overlaps with the last three months of the CFL season. In late November, Jim Speros had a Save our Stallions campaign, with January 5 as the deadline to sell 20,000 season tickets. It was revealed that the team was $800,000 in debt. Stallions owner Jim Speros realized that despite the Stallions' popularity, they could n... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22408115 ... Read more
