Product Description

The first edition of this authoritative book quickly became the single source for accurate and unbiased information on complementary and alternative medicine approaches for the management of MS symptoms. The second edition, completely updated throughout, reflects advances in the field since the book’s initial publication in 2001. Therapies are organized alphabetically so that readers can easily pinpoint a specific treatment and learn about its origins, merits, and possible uses in MS. In-depth discussions cover Naltrexone, acupuncture, biofeedback, chiropractic medicine, cooling therapy, yoga, diets, the use of supplements, herbs, vitamins, and minerals, and many other topics. This invaluable guide alerts MS patients and their families to new options for relief when conventional therapies are limited; directs them to therapies that are effective, low-risk, and inexpensive; and helps them recognize those that are ineffective, dangerous, and costly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source of information for both the professional and lay person
Great book.Well written, interesting, concise, informative.Presents all published medical studies and offers the fact-based opinion on most types of CAM.I'm very glad I purchased it, and I don't know why I didn't sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-Date Essential Reference
My doctor recommended this book and author. The doctor who wrote the book has researched everything from vitamins and herbs, to acupuncture, to the treatments about which we hear wonderful reports. Each potential therapy is explained. The author is honest about which therapies have been scientifically studied. He's forthright about some therapies that activate the immune system (causing possible problems in MS).He admits some therapies look promising, but need further study. He appears to be objective, yet will let the reader know of reports that sound promising, but have not been scientifically studied. As I read the book the first time I crossed out suggested treatments that are harmful and marked some to discuss with my doctor.
This book compiles a large amount of information into a ready reference source.Unlike many references, it is compact and easy to handle. It is organized alphabetically by therapy. The author explains each, tells what studies have been done in MS or reports that have been made.Dr. Bowling mentions the symptoms (if any)for which the therapy has proven effective. He explains potential side effects. Then he offers a conclusion based on that information.
This book is a "must have" for anyone with MS who wants to explore options outside of the traditional approved medical courses of action. It is not designed to take the place of traditional medicine, rather as a supplement.I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars CAM therapy for MS
This book is a rather disappointing overall review of all the current literature already published about CAM and MS.
Essentially, there isn't anything new and unusual in this entire book. The author has merely linked all the curent theories together and listed the pros and cons of each, relative to MS.

Nothing new, nothing startling nothing of pending scientific value.
Old phrases on an old subject matter.

If you have MS, save your money for a book that actually has something to say, not one that merely repeats what others have already published. A waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
This book is exactly what I needed. I was already using herbs instead of drugs. This book helps me focus on what I really need to be taking to help my condition stay in remission. I was directed to this book, and glad I don't question the intuition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learned a lot
I read this book while waiting to get in to see the MS Specialist to see if I had MS. I had never really paid attention to MS, at least the details of how it effects a person. As a person in recovery from alcohol and drugs, I wanted to see what alternatives exist.

I found the book full of hope. Got a good explaination of the disease and what it is. I like the fact that Dr. Bowling gives both sides of the arguement for a particular treatment and explains the type of studies done on it.

Once I got in to see the specialist, he was aware of this book and open to listening to my questions and discussing different alternatives. The MS Center offered some CAM mentioned in the book. ... Read more

Salmon Lane is a quiet Bermondsey backstreet lined with modest brick houses and paved with cobbles. For Carrie Tanner it's home. She's worked hard to build her own business and has earned the grudging respect of her business rivals - even the Galloways, both father and son. Personal feuds, though, are overshadowed by the outbreak of the Second World War, which brings the terrors of the Blitz to the neighbourhood. This close-knit community is forced to draw on all their reserves of courage and humour to survive the difficulties of poverty, rationing and nightly air raids. And even as the men are called up, go missing in action or are killed, and homes are bombed, their extraordinary Cockney spirit shines through ... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague

Where do I start?

This bowling technique (the power ball) is most certainly NOT geared to the beginner or intermediate bowler. A hook ball with a medium release (thumb at 11 o'clock position) and a free armswing is more than adequate for all but the most demanding players and playing conditions (at least that was what we were taught at coaching school). The power ball would put excessive strain on the wrist and fingers.

The power ball enters the pocket at 75 to 80 degrees? On which planet does this occur? CAT analysis has shown the pros angle of entry to the pocket at a mere 5 1/2 to 6 degrees, which would be about the maximum achievable without using a rocket-powered ball (currently illegal, I believe).

This is a fairly recent book, yet some of the pictures look like they were taken during the 1950's. What gives?

The spare making suggestions have been rendered obsolete by the 3-6-9 and 2-4-6 spare systems.

The two-page section on advice to seniors was just hilarious (go bowling and make new friends after you retire - wow). Nothing on bowling itself. Bowling does change as you grow older, because the game becomes, physically at least, a bit more difficult, particularly with regards to hand strength/ball weight and knee/leg and back problems. The obvious come to mind - switch to a lighter ball, hold the ball lower in the stance, reduce the length of the steps in the approach.

I would not recommend this book to any of my students at any level. Beginning players should choose Strickland, intermediate players, Kouros.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't impressed
Bowling Strikes was off to a great start. It jumped right into the mechanics of bowling in good detail.Suddenly, after 30 or 40 pages, it just died.It almost looked like the author became bored and just wantedto throw another hundred pages on to make the book longer.A good portionwas spent displaying almost every possible spare.First of all, with thetitle being Bolwing Strikes, was was there more space dedicated to pickingup spares? I would have rather the author diagnosed precisely whatcaused the spare and options to correct your throw rather then spending apage on how to pick up the 6-9-10!Even stranger, the author assumesyou're advanced enough that you throw a hook, yet spends several pages onettiquette, how to score, and injuries. The first 20 or 30 pages have somehelpful tips, but you're better off spending the money on practice.Bestsuited for someone who just bought a fingertip ball and wants to learn howto hook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Increasing power and scores.
Ive been bowling for 2 years now and messed about with bowling straight then spinning the ball but my averages were always around 140.Ive had this book for 2 weeks and I now have a comfortable style and bowl 160average (top score 210).The author tells you how to apply spin to theball via the "squeeze"...excellent book and judy is very pretty! Nice one amazon

5-0 out of 5 stars great story with great charachters
Reviewed by Marty Shaw for Reader Views (10/10)

Snowy is a young slave who has never known any other life than one of servitude. However, he and his friends have figured out a way that allows them to stay together. They dance so well together that they sell for a higher amount as a group than as individuals. The life of a pleasure slave isn't a good one, but Snowy and his friends make the best out of a bad arrangement, and Snowy has special gifts that allow him to make things as easy for them as possible. Snowy is able to use these gifts to catch the eye of a R'il'noid named Derik, who buys Snowy and his friends. As for as masters go, Derik really isn't that bad and Snowy figures that life might not be that bad with him, but then something happens that changes everything. Snowy gets deathly ill from a disease that has little effect on humans. This leads Derik to discover, with the help of his half-brother, Nik, that Snowy isn't human. Snowy only has a few memories of his mother and no memories at all of his father, so he's shocked and frightened to learn that Derik's brother, Lai, is his father.

Snowy is given the name, Roi, and begins the daunting task of learning to live as a free person. The fact that his uncle was formerly his owner is a fact that affects the whole family and causes some understandable tension, especially when Derik's history of taking slaves as lovers is widely known among others. Another source of tension is Lai, who carries a lot of emotional baggage associated with Roi's mom and the memory of her departure. He doesn't know what to do with this child who appeared from nowhere and he fears doing the wrong thing because he feels that he did something wrong in raising his other son, Zhaim, although he can't actually admit that to himself. Will Roi be a chance at redemption or proof that the madman, Zhaim, truly is the result of Lai's parenting?

It's easy to feel a little overwhelmed with "Homecoming" because there are a lot of characters that are tied to one another in some form or another. Fortunately, the author does a good job of keeping things in order so it doesn't become too confusing. Snowy/Roi is a likable character and that makes him entertaining to read about. I felt his fear as a slave trying desperately to keep his little family together, and I felt that fear slide towards terror when he was introduced to his new life. He's known some decent R'il'noid slave owners, but the majority of them were twisted and depraved. As a R'il'noid , will this now become his future? His father, Lai, is a good man with a lot of responsibility and a busy schedule. I wasn't too thrilled with Lai at first. His aloofness made it hard to like him, but the story focuses attention on him towards the middle of the book and I was able to get to know him better and I learned that he was actually a good guy who just desperately needed another perspective in his life to allow him to see some errors in his judgment. Roi's uncles, Derik and Nik, are both good guys who have the best of intentions for Roi, although Derik's wild past makes others frequently question his motives. Zhaim is the half-brother that nobody wants to be related to and he causes more than his fair share of heartache and heart in Roi's life. Ironically, Zhaim's attitude and constant plotting against Roi provides the fire that allows Roi to fully accept his new station in life. Marna isn't introduced until halfway through the book, but she is easily one of my favorite characters, second only to Roi. She is the definition of a true woman, elegant and formally polite when the situation calls for it, but a passionate warrior that won't hesitate to stand her ground when challenged. She's had centuries of heartache that could have destroyed a lesser spirit, but that history simply makes her stronger and more determined.

While "Homecoming" has an ending that confidently wraps up all the loose ends in this part of Roi's life, I'm left with the hope that Ms Bowling might one day let us see how Roi is doing as an adult. If you're looking for a science fiction adventure that has some thought behind it, I highly recommend this story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Homecoming Review
Set over approximately three years in the distant future, the complexity of the storyline and characters can sometimes overwhelm the reader in the initial third of the book. But at that point, the reader is able to understand what is transpiring in the R'il'nai world, how the R'il'noids and Humans fit into the story, and is able to settle into learning who is going to win out in the battle for control. This is an adult-level read, with a rather wide range of characters from leaders to villains, from children to slaves, from lovers to enemies. The number of characters results in some being more believable than others, especially the better fleshed-out ones like Roi and Marna.Topics covered include the idea of freedom, cruelty to others, leadership qualities, teleporting, intergalactic travel, human beings and aliens and crossbreeding, extrasensory perceptions like healing touch, ability to foresee the future, the ability to read DNA of something. While not a fan of science fiction, this was quite readable and intriguing. There are enough loose ends that it seems likely a sequel will appear, and I'd want to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put Homecoming down.
"Homecoming."What a nice surprise.

I had just gotten back from the cabin. You know, boat, moose, bears. You betcha. My wife handed me a book."Read this, Sue Ann Bowling wrote it.You know, the woman you met in the airport."I politely started to put "Homecoming" on that ever-increasing pile of Books-to-be-Read.

"No, read it now, its Science Fiction, we need you to read it and write a review, nobody else we know reads this stuff."

Caught.

The weak part of the book is the first few pages. We science fiction readers have learned to expect a galactic gun battle, or at least a couple of dangerous alien macro-beasts, on page one.Nope.Sue Ann has put more depth into this book.

"Homecoming" really didn't take off until the horse race on page 24.Horse race?In a Sci-fi book? Yup, couple of alien cross-breeds and a telepathic slave, racing horses. Would have made a dandy first page.

The strong part is that I couldn't put "Homecoming" down.

This is book isn't William Gibson, but is it closer to his level of writing than it is to the utopian drivel, and to the testosterone-based battle star writings that plague science fiction. This book works. It is plausible, fun, and uses excellent science. It may be a snapshot of a possible future. While arguably safe to hand to your little sister, "Homecoming" explores the fragile edge of human/alien sexuality, cruelty, and compassion.

The hero, initially a young male slave, journeys through discovery, freedom, education, responsibility and leadership. Much as we all have done.If you have ever had an extra-sensory experience, this book will fold you into its pages, and not let you out until the dog says it's time for bed. There are the usual star jumps:I found myself stranded with the author on a primitive planet where the DNA helix spiraledin both directions, leaving half of the bio fauna indigestible.New concept.Cool.I learned that planets that are too aggressive never survive long enough to achieve space travel.Cool again, another new concept; which is why-we-read-science-fiction in the first place: It broadens our thinking.Bowling's strong academic background in geophysics comes through charmingly.

Homecoming is an easy read, but a deep read.I am surprised that this depth of writing came from a writer with this young a mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Sci Fi readers
I don't normally read science fiction, but this book was recommended to me by an independent book dealer. It takes a little effort to get into "the world" of the book, but that can be said of any work of fiction. Once you get used to the novel's world, it is not hard to relax and watch the plot unfold.

The book deals with some familiar themes (the child who discovers he is not who he thought he was, hazing at school, overcoming physical disabilities) but even these are given a new twist. If and when you think you are getting a hint of Oliver Twist or Harry Potter, you quickly see them in contrast to what you read in "Homecoming."

Slavery is one of the dominant issues of the world of this novel. The clash between cultures is another.Although the novel has a relatively satisfying conclusion, it begs for a sequel.Somehow I think the author is planning one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A coherent reality
This is a remarkable book. I used to read lots of science fiction and fantasy but it's been a long time since anything has held my interest.

The author has created a coherent reality which begins to manifest with the very first sentence. By the end of the first page I was amazed.
Lots of plausible galactic history here, with an unusual approach to the problems encountered by species with very different life spans.
It's a little tricky at first, keeping track of all the characters and how they relate to each other, but a family tree type diagram would be a spoiler,
so just make your own as you go along. A brave and thoughtful book. Hopefully the first of a trilogy ! ... Read more

Product Description
Settled by English and Scotch-Irish descendants who ventured "over the mountains" in search of adventure, land, and fortune, Breathitt County, Kentucky, has produced interesting tales of beauty, progress, intrigue, and murder. "Bloody Breathitt" was the site of a long series of feuds that lasted from the early days of the "Cattle Wars" until the 1970s and beyond. Through the years, the city of Jackson and Breathitt County have experienced booms and busts centered on its natural resources, which included salt, timber, oil, and coal. Since its establishment on April 1, 1839, the county has been a place of educational opportunity through community schools, school districts, Lees College, and a vocational school. From its rugged mountain roots filled with feuds to a community working to embrace new technology and the reemergence of timber and coal industries, Breathitt County has always been in transition, and its continued growth must be grounded in a firm understanding of its past. ... Fishing captain Jean Cotterell is rescued by a French frigate—The Hortense—off the Grand Banks of Nova Scotia in May 1794. His fishing vessel has foundered and he is the sole survivor. The Hortense is part of Republican Admiral Jan Van Stabel’s great fleet of more than 100 ships bringing corn to France. Life on The Hortense is like France under the Terror: chaotic, ungovernable, and obsessed with savage, radical political theories. Separated from the French fleet in the Western Approaches, she is intercepted by two British frigates, and Cotterell finds himself embroiled in the heat of battle.

Amazon.com Review
Brautigan was in many ways the Hemingway of the 60s--but aHemingway with a playful sense of humor. His epigrammatic stories andpoems are clean andsimple, but like a pool of quiet water, sometimes deceptively deep; theindividual parts of each of his books are short, but linger in yourimagination for a long time like the flavor of the best chocolateenvelops your palette; and his subjectsare mundane and even naively treated, but sometimes touch on the profound.

I loved Brautigan's writing as ateenager, hated his writing when I was a snobby East coast academic--but findthat I am once again attracted to his work. Perhapsthis change of opinion occurred because I have spent so much time in his stomping grounds in thePacific Northwest in the past years, or perhaps my transient dislike for hiswriting arose out of his ability to delicately punch holes in pompouspretense. At any rate, if you haven't read Brautigan yet, you mightgive him a try--and if you are already a fan of his, you should rejoice at these recent reissues of all his major works. ... Read more

This is the saddest possible book that Richard Brautigan could write. The theme is like the existence of circumstance and coincidence in the movie "Magnolia."It would be difficult to maintain that this book has no theme. There is an appreciation of ancient Greek poetry which is unmatched in contemporary American fiction. This book might be considered unusual in ways that reality reflects only if it exists (and I think it does).

I am now a one(1) step bowler and I LOVE it.At first I felt a bit awkward without an approach, but this way really works!I am bowling much better than I ever have before...and I'm having more fun!Other bowlers are acually coming over to me and asking questions about how I learned to bowl this way - so now I'm carrying this book with me when I go bowling to show them that it isn't something I made up!I will never go back to the OLD way of bowling!

Product Description
From The Honeymooners to The Big Lebowski, from The Flintstones to Ed, bowling has rolled right down the middle of American culture like no sport—or even pastime—in the nation’s postwar history. This entertaining, illustrated history illuminates the place that bowling holds in the heart of America, as well as its loftier antecedents and the high-kitsch status all things bowling have recently attained.

Let's Go Bowling! opens a wide cultural angle on the sport, from its alleged origins in ancient Egypt to its move to the United States (and indoors), from its starring role in TV, movies, and music over the past 50 years to the design and architecture of bowling alleys; from the social aspect of the pastime to the heights (and depths) of bowling fashion—the disinfected, two-tone shoes; the multicolored shirts with embroidered names, the glittering custom balls with matching bags.In colorful sidebars, readers will find a primer on bowling etiquette, a brief history of the world’s oldest bowling alley, and more. ... Product Description
There is a relatively high use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), especially dietary supplements, among people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Health professionals with CAM information can improve the quality of patient care by guiding patients away from possibly harmful therapies and, if appropriate, towards low-risk, possibly effective therapies.

Dietary Supplements and Multiple Sclerosis is meant to be referred to when people with MS ask a question about a particular dietary supplement. Supplements are arranged in alphabetical order under the most commonly used name. In addition, the index contains a listing of these common names as well as less common names that may be encountered. The main information about the supplements is written in a concise summary form that usually discusses only the MS relevance of the supplement.

The supplements selected for inclusion are those with specific MS relevance, such as those that are known to be used by people with MS, have claimed efficacy for slowing disease progression or relieving MS symptoms, interact with drugs commonly used to treat MS, and potentially worsen MS or its symptoms. Also, supplements are reviewed that are popular in the general population or are known to have serious adverse effects. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad intention & Questionable Credibility
Dear MS-er:
If you expect this book to present a "Complementary and Alternative Medicine Program" that can help you with your disease (As could be implied by the authers' profissional field), then you are mistaken. If you are looking for "Dietry Supplements" (As could be implied by the title of this book) then look else where.

If you need to read such silly claims like"Excessive Vitamin E can increase risk of bleeding" ( may I ask if this has been clinciallyproven? huh), then buy this book and enjoy.

This book makes me wonder, if it was written with the intention to help MS suffes or was intended to favor beta-Interferon manufacturers over alternative Medicin?

False claims in the book makes the authers' credibility questionalble.

A POSITIVE, yet challenging, approach in handling the subject would be listing those supplements that can benifit MS suffers instead of a list to warn about.

Logically, a satement like "No clinical proof that X supplement have any impact on MS" - does NOT imply that X spplement has NO impact on MS but rather it means that NO clinical trials were conducted to prove its effectiveness.

Surprisingly enough, TWO of the most exciting herbs, backed up with clinical experiemens -proven to positively impact MS (Turmeric -resommended by Dr. Weil- , Polypodium Leucontomos ).

More funny thing about this book is that it considers "Turmeric" which is an Indian food spices to be equivelant to "GOLDENSEAL"!!!!! and warns against its sedative impact!!! by the way, it doesnt mention Polypodium!!!

If I would comment on all rubbish claims in this book, I could endup with another book of its size or even more!

Take Care

5-0 out of 5 stars Jampacked with lots and lots of essential information those of us with MS need
WOW!I now no longer feel like I'm fumbling around in the dark about dietary suppplements and MS!Dr. Bowling thoroughly and objectively examines supplements and their effects on MS!How empowering it is to know that certain supplements have the side effect of nausea, which is my most frequent and bothersome MS sypmtom and the one thing I simply can't cope with.

No more Evening Primrose Oil for me!I've replaced it with Flaxseed Oil, which does basically the same thing, but unlike Evening Primrose Oil does not have nausea as a side effect!

I would gladly trade more physical disability if I just could find a way to do something about the nausea!

And even more important information, supplements that stimulate the immune system. Also of importance is the information on which supplements can cause liver damage, particularly important for those of us who are on one of the interferons!

With Dr. Bowling's excellent book in hand I am adding herbal supplements to my regimin, and I do notice a measurable improvement in my overall condition!

However, as all us MS'rs know, our lovely little disease has a tendency to go through periods when it kicks our butts less than at other times, and with that knowledge, I'll do an update on this review towards the end of this year.

Obviously, highly reccomended to anyone with MS!I'd pretty much put this in the category of a must-read book for my Sisters and Brothers with MS.

Doesn't having MS absolutely STINK?????

10/19/05As promised, I'm updating this review.Well, so far the improvement is continuing.Actually, I think it's a combination of several different things.I feel that the fact that I workout 4 to 6 times a week is also very beneficial! So this book still rates a 5+ with me! ... Read more

Product Description
Nestled in a natural bowl created by surrounding foothills, Bowling Green has become the commercial, educational, medical, and retail hub of south-central Kentucky. Although Bowling Green claims itself as the home of such American icons as Duncan Hines and the Corvette, it is anything but a stereotypical place. As the state's fifth-largest city, Bowling Green boasts the second-largest number of restaurants per capita in the country, the Commonwealth's fastest-growing university, and the most ethnically diverse population in the state. Since its founding in 1798, Bowling Green has continued to accumulate a fascinating history and cultivate a promising future. Images of America: Bowling Green highlights and celebrates this dynamic city's development from an agricultural trading center to a city of culture, education, and prosperity. Featuring images of Lost River Cave, Beech Bend, Fountain Square Park, and the 1937 flood, readers are taken on a journey through Bowling Green's history and its beloved landmarks and citizens. ...
