1-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I HAD IN MIND!
This book is mainly about people who throw boomerangs as a sport. I was hoping that
it had more to do about boomerangs. It does have a chapter with pictures of
boomerangs as art.
So don't buy this book if you only want to learn how to make boomerangs, or want
a history of them from different cultures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that will have you returning again and again!
'Bout Boomerangs, America's Silent Sport: History, Heroes and How to
by Kelly B. Sagert

I found that Kelly's book offers a unique presentation of information coupled with a fresh, new twist to writing styles.
She has managed to provide interesting facts and data about boomerangs in such a way as to make the reader feel that he or she is involved in a conversation with the author.

The reader is mentally taken back in time to experience the thrill of the primitive boomerang hunt, as well as being able to understand the challenge of modern day competition.

I've rarely come across non-fiction books of this type that have accomplished the task of making me feel as though I was being told an interesting story while learning about a subject that is new to me.

I anxiously await future books written by Ms. Sagert

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique, informative, and entertaining book.
This is a marvelous book for either the uninitiated or for the veteran boomeranger. I knew almost nothing about them, but I wanted to buy one for my son. I obtained the boomerang and the book at the same time, and I was delighted with Sagert's approach. She not only gives practical instruction in the sport of throwing boomerangs, she combines this with a full history of the device, and she also links it with culture and society. A great collection of photographs and oversized format make this a perfect all-in-one volume for anyone with even the most casual interest. Most surprising is the fact that Sagert is not herself a competitive boomeranger. Her observations are objective and designed to be accessible and entertaining. This is an unique volume, in short, one that is sure to please as a gift or for personal pleasure. In fact, most people will want more than one copy, I'm sure, after they see their first disappearing under the arm of some thrower who strives to perfect the discipline of boomeranging ... In this inspiring book, best-selling author Abigail Trafford describes how people over fifty are rewriting the script of love and in the process redefining the institution of marriage for future generations. Drawing on interviews with hundreds of men and women, married and single, gay and straight, Trafford explores what it means to love and be loved in the decades after midlife—and offers solutions to the most common problems that define this period, such as “retired spouse syndrome” and divorce. Wise and compassionate, As Time Goes By is an essential guide to the pursuit of love and happiness in this dynamic stage of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I've bought extra copies for several friends for this book's ability to get you thinking about the later years of your marriage and relationships. It is inspiring and motivating!

3-0 out of 5 stars Overview of how times have changed
As a reader in my 70's I enjoyed the author's view, based on statistics, of how marriage ideals and living together have changed over the decades.Trafford writes for the lay reader with insight, humor and interesting personal interviews.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably informative (3.25*s)
This book is a reasonable effort at shedding light on the possibilities and problems of coupledom in old age and/or retirement. It's not particularly remarkable to note that some marriages involve serial spouses (many marriages), are boomerang (marry, divorce, remarry same person), are throwback romantic (return to a past love), or have lasted a lifetime. Plenty of examples of all types are presented. It could be significant that the author's sample of marriages is highly skewed. Those she interviewed were invariably upper middle-class and professionals, in many cases in professions that permitted a great deal of flexibility and chances to control when one's working career is over or to move to related alternatives.

By far the most significant aspect of the book is her scattered discussions about the stresses of moving from work to retirement, involving either one or both marital partners. Changes in the primary earner can be especially problematical. With the structure of work gone, the intricacies of marriage move to the center of their lives. Cracks and incompatibilities, perhaps long dormant, in the marriage will invariably come to the fore when it becomes so important. As one would expect, the ability to communicate is foremost in overcoming hurdles, especially matters such as depression or sickness. In some cases, marriages become flat-lined, a situation where tolerance, appeasement, or a kind of standoff is achieved with no chance of an enjoyable relationship.

The author also discusses such matters as the changing capability of engaging in or enjoying physical intimacy. In addition, she contends that a network of at least ten close friends is necessary. She warns against the susceptibleness to infatuation, perhaps due to the realization of fewer years remaining.

The book is mildly informative and keeps the number of example cases at a reasonable level. Finding examples of marriages similar to one's own can be comforting, enlightening, or even a call to action. The author makes no scientific claims concerning her work. She does not indicate how her sample was selected and there are no reference notes. The author is certainly correct to note that we are an aging population. The issues raised in this book will become more and more relevant in our society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Boys
I purchased this book for my 11 yr.old soon who is very into hunting and the outdoors. He loves this book! I think he has tried just about every trap in this book and is even getting into other projects! And best of all- he is READING! I appreciate this much more than sittig in front of video games all day!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
The book is full of great ideas. It is a little old fashioned, but sparks ideas for modern version of the same thing at times. My son begged for it for weeks and loves it.

Purchased as a gift for a 10 year old boy and he really likes it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for boys
My son had this as a child and has been looking for a replacement for a year; he was delighted to have a new copy of his favorite book from childhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neat book for boys!
My 12 year old son who enjoys Scouts likes this book. He's the type that makes his pinewood derby by whittling and sanding by hand--using none of those modern machinery tools.(and has actually done very well in the pinewood derby races!) He likes back-to-basics construction projects and this book offers lots of neat ideas and projects, some pretty simple, some more involved, & some of which he would not do, but he enjoys reading about it and looking at the diagrams. It's just interesting and because the book was first published in 1882, some of the language is somewhat pioneeristic and so are the ideas and sketches, but that's what makes it so neat! This book will inspire lots of ideas and encourage boys to get out and go play in the woods or make something at home. It's also a good value for a hardback book. ... Read more

Not sure what to say regarding this book. The scene with the accidental phone number mixup always sounded a bit far fetched to me.The cover art was poor, but yet the book was a decent read. The brothers seemed to limit their travelling somewhat in this one.Worth reading but far from the series elite.Give it a weak 3 star rating.RATED C

2-0 out of 5 stars Below Average
Mr. Hardy asks Frank And Joe to help him with his case concerning a gang that is stealing mercury. He asks them to call a shipping company in New York; however, a mistake with the area code causes them to reach the Pentagon, instead, just at the precise moment that a robbery occurs. These events lead Frank and Joe to Baltimore, where they attempt to track down the gang. The premise for this book is rather ridiculous considering that the area code for New York is 212 and that for Washington D.C. is 202.The 0 and the 1 are nowhere near each other on either a touch tone phone nor a rotary dial phone, so I don't see how a mistake like that could happen if you know the number you are calling. If your willing to accept this and just read the book, it's not that bad.The mystery is fairly well paced and there is quite a bit of action. The ending is somewhat silly, but mostly the book isn't that disappointing.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Bombay Boomerang (Hardy Boys, No 49)
I really enjoyed reading this book because the story makes you think about what is happening to the boys and figure out what is really happening. As you read the book, you discover many clues that you have to use to act like a detective and try to solve the mystery. You also have to figure out what the criminals are doing and planning. You really have to learn to think like a detective to solve the mystery.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good starting point
The book is clearly written, organized by region, brief yet to the point.I chose it as a starting point in beginning to understand US involvement in the Middle East.I found the information conscise and heavily footnoted.I appreciated the footnotes as I looked up additional information on the internet. The information was easy to grasp for a broad understanding. This book was quite helpful to me in going on to read other books which discuss matters at a deeper level.I would recommend it to another person not well versed in the politics of the middle east -US relationship.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is why the world hates America
This is a country-by-country chronicle of how American covert wars throughout the Middle East have come back to haunt us, creating plenty of enemies.

Saddam Hussein's rise to power in the 1970s was helped by a CIA decision to assassinate one of his predecessors, General Abdel Karim Qassim. In Syria, the CIA sponsored a 1949 military takeover, the first of over a dozen coups in the next 20 years. American oil companies felt that an independent Syria was not in their interests. Sudan has been involved, off and on, in a bloody civil war for almost 50 years. Oil just happens to be a factor in this ongoing slaughter.

In Egypt, Hosni Mubarak has ruled with an iron fist ever since the 1982 assassination of Anwar Sadat, his predecessor. Mubarak uses billions of dollars in US military aid to beat and torture opposition politicians and journalists, many of whom have died in custody. Press restrictions are widespread. Egypt is viewed as a well-bribed client state of the US. The military in Turkey, a US ally and fellow member of NATO, has been one of the biggest human rights abusers of the last decade.

America has always looked for a surrogate policeman in the Persian Gulf, to keep an eye on the huge oil reserves. First, we armed the Shah of Iran, ignoring his repression, until he was overthrown. Then we armed Iraq, ignoring Saddam Hussein's repression, until he became too powerful, and a major war was needed to destroy his arsenal. Now, America is arming Saudi Arabia, ignoring their repression, creating a generation of militants determined to overthrow the puppet regime propped up with American money.

Part of the blame for all this can be laid at the feet of Great Britain. They were the colonial power for much of the first half of the 20th century, and had a tendency to draw national boundaries while ignoring an area's ethnic makeup.

Arab hatred of America has less to do with our freedoms and diversity than with our illegal involvement in another country's internal affairs. This book easily reaches the level of Must Read. It's very interesting, it's easy to read and it is full of information that won't be mentioned in the mainstream media. ... Read more

From transforming the ways of war to offering godlike views of inaccessible spots, revolutionizing rescues worldwide, and providing some of our most-watched TV moments—including the cloud of newscopters that trailed O. J. Simpson’s Bronco—the helicopter is far more capable than early inventors expected. Now James Chiles profiles the many helicoptrians who contributed to the development of this amazing machine, and pays tribute to the selfless heroism of pilots and crews. A virtual flying lesson and scientific adventure tale, The God Machine is more than the history of an invention; it is a journey into the minds of imaginative thinkers and a fascinating look at the ways they changed our world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Coverage of Rotocraft History and Evolution
This is one of the best and up to date books on rotocraft that I have read. It is an extensive, thorough work which is engaging and informative. I like how the author develops rotocraft theory and traces the origins of the machine from the simple early developments to modern technological advances. The pace of the book is effective and it logically flows to ensure that clear, concise coverage is given to all areas and stages of development of helicopters in both a technological and an historic perspective, which is rarely seen in books on rotocraft. It is also quite entertaining and is a great book both for the aviator and the general population. I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.
I agree with the other reviewers, there is a paucity of good books on helicopter history.Unfortunately this does not remedy the situation.Perhaps it should be subtitled "stories of the helicopter" and even more specificially "American stories of the helicopter.""The God machine" was Amerocentric, disjointed, and in several instances, painful to read. If the narrative had been tightened up even a little it probably would have been entertaining, but as it was I found myself being annoyed by spelling errors and incorrect verbiage.I think Mr. Chiles' editor should be fired. If you want a solid primer on helicopters look at the Wikipedia page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Uplift Your Knowledge

From humankind's early aspirations to fly by flapping wings of wax and feathers to the roar and flap-flap-flap of today's sophisticated helicopters in war, civilian transport, construction, logging, mercy flights and search and rescue, Jim Chiles pens a sophisticated and entertaining history of "The God Machine."All of the technical matter necessary to understand choppers, how they developed and how they fly, comes clearly and easily to the non-mechanical readers as well to helicopter engineers, thanks to Chiles' skilled exposition and his deep research into the wingless mechanisms we often see in daily life, news reports, and adventure films."The God Machine" promises to add value to any library, including those in homes where parents leave good books out to tempt offspring into reading and therefore expanding their mental life. In short, "The God Machine" is a fact book for all, a worthy read on a fascinating subject, a book that uplifts your knowledge and raises your awareness of one of humanity's engineering marvels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meets a real need.
James R. Chiles' The God Machine takes an important place among a very small literature on a vital piece of modern technology - the helicopter.

Writings about or involving helicopters are plentiful. A Google search using helicopter and history turns up more than 10 million hits. Doing the same for just books in Amazon.com turns up over 12,000 and almost a thousand at Barnes & Noble. However, when you try to find just those that make any real effort to cover the breadth and depth of the subject -- the ideas underlying, development, application, and impact of this technology - numbers drop to a handful. Among those, most are either dated - which only takes a few years, given the pace of change in the world -- or focus solely on military aspects. So, even if it did nothing more than just try to cover the waterfront, The God Machine would be a valuable book.

In fact, Chiles has gone well beyond that. He's presented key issues and a fair amount of technical information in terms that almost any lay reader can understand. An example is his discussion of the problem of controlling a helicopter in a hover - the invaluable characteristic that distinguishes it from almost all other aircraft. He explains how this problem frustrated early visionaries and inventors and how it was finally overcome - down to the specific hardware involved and how it works this magic.

In taking a broad view, Chiles also discusses the huge gaps between vision and reality that have been a persistent part of the story. One of these gaps involved the idea of a simple, cheap device that would displace the family car and reduce increasing congestion on highways. This vision butted against the reality of a technology that defied finding a practical combination of cost, capability, and reliability that could put the product in the hands of the masses. He shows how these same factors restricted ownership and use to the wealthy, companies, and public agencies meeting special needs. He shows how various inventors tried, always unsuccessfully, to overcome these obstacles.

Chiles also shows how the helicopter achieved a unique place in meeting special needs - especially for the military and in such activities as arctic exploration, servicing offshore oil platforms, civilian search-and-rescue, and real-time news gathering. He also shows how evolving social and political contexts have shaped attitudes toward helicopters - especially opposition to their noise, as well as concerns about government spying on private citizens.

Finally he shows, as in the case of helicopters rescuing mountain climbers in Alaska, how availability of this technology has sometimes led to a false sense of security and personal recklessness that the public winds up paying the bills for.

While this book lacks citation to sources for specific information, as one who has worked extensively on history involving helicopters, I know that Chiles has also made accessible to general readers information found only in some rare and expensive sources. Beyond that, he's drawn on interviews with and direct observation of helicopter pilots and users - to the extent of having learned to fly a helicopter himself. Anecdotes flowing from these sources give his writing an immediate, human touch that increases entertainment, as well as informational value.

No book will ever be the last word on rotorcraft, but The God Machine certainly meets a real need. If you want to or can buy only one book on helicopters, this is the one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title and Worthless Information
Simply put, this book is meant to put first graders to sleep. The projects are simple, impractical, and boring. How do you create a "sneaky" mini-boomerang out of cardboard? Cut a "V" out of the cardboard and there you go! Plainly uninformative. How do you create a robot? 4 ice cube trays, 12 Pringles containers, and an electric clock. That's not science!

I read MAKE magazine and I suppose I was looking for something along those lines when I ordered this book. Based on the title, I ordered the book as a gift for a kid, but never gave it. It was just a disappointment. Just because you put "sneaky" in front of a word, like oragami or jacket, does not make it so.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sneaky, Sneakier and Sneakiest Uses Trilogy
This review is for all three books in this series. The first note is they are clearly written for the 13 year old and under crowd. For them, it should stimulate the creative scientific gene in them, and open their imaginations to harmless scientific experimentation. So if there is a young burgeonoing, tinkering youngster in your life, these books could be the spark to spur them into some educational fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT IDEAS ON EVERY PAGE!
I bought all three of these books and have read them all. They are very interesting and a great idea for a rainy day. If you buy one you should buy them all. These are some of the most entertaining set of books I have ever read. I highly recommend them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guy Gift
This was given as a Christmas present and it has brought a lot of laughs and some serious tinkering.Fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
My husband got the first book a while back for himself, but wasn't disappointed when he found it was a better book for our kids, so I got this one just to top out my last order for free shipping. I'm glad I did.
It's as good as the first one, with a lot of simple and non-intimidating projects for the beginning maker, and a lot of them are done with things you can find around the house easily, or ask your friends for.
Like the first book, a lot of the projects have room for improvement, which I think is a great thing, it inspires people to think a little more, to mess around a bit, and see what they can come up with, and feel like they really did something themselves. My 13 yo daughter likes it a lot, and we've planned on trying some of the projects together. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent surprise
I picked this book up for 50 cents at a local library sale, simply because it was written by Agatha Christie. Then it sat on the shelf for a few years.I finally decided to read it when I was looking for something short and light...little did I know I'd stumbled into one of those time-traps that runs around disguised as a book.

The characters immediately drew me in.The poor Bobby who still lives at home and is unsure what to do with his life. The rich Lady Frances Derwent, dissatisfied with her privelaged life. The friendship and (extremely) subtle romance between these two characters really appealed to me.

The story itself is well-written, and will certainly leave you guessing until the end.Overall, however, it's not not quite one of those mysteries in which "clues" are scattered throughout the story and the reader can use them to figure out who did it.Instead, we get "clues" in the form of people from the past mentioned off-handedly, whose actions (which of course are impossible for the reader to know) actually played a very important role in the overall "mystery".It would be absolutely impossible for any reader to figure out the meaning behind the phrase, "Why didn't they ask Evans?"before Frankie and Bobby themselves do.

But overall, I thought it was a very entertaining, well-written story. It has its share of red herrings, and it's fun to guess "who did it", even if the only possible way for you to get it right is by chance.I was completely sucked into it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Boomerang Clue
This is the second Agatha Christie book that I have read and I really enjoyed it.The sleuths were smart and engaging. The mystery kept taking new twists. It was very good.I liked this much more than the first Christie I read,so I will definitely read more.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT THE READER BELOW DOES NOT KNOW
When Sipram, from Calcutta, wrote that "'This is one of Christie's delightful books which later came on TV as the popular 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' " he or she does not know that the original title is "Why didn't they ask Evans?", and that it was printed in England in 1934, and that the name of this book for the american edition of this book is "The boomerang clue". It's been translated into Spanish as "Trayectoria de Boomerang". I've read it in Spanish, and it's absolutely marvelous.

2-0 out of 5 stars The 'Accidental' Murders
This is one of Christie's delightful books which later came on TV as the popular 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' It features the amateur detectives Bobby and Frankie, the latter known to the world as the most unlikely Lady Francis Derwent. She's the daughter of an earl, and this rather fortunate circumstance gets the lady an entry into houses where the more plebian Bobby can enter only as a chaffeur.

'Why didn't they ask Evans?' A handsome stranger with a photo of a hauntingly beautiful girl in his pocket, falls off a cliffside and dies with these rather mysterious words even as Bobby stands guard over him while his friend goes for help. The woman who turns up as the original of that photo, a heavily made-up, rather coarse woman, makes Bobby wonder at the cruelty of age that can destroy such beauty, till he realises that this is a different woman and that the photo has been changed. Things begin happening soon after that. An attempt on Bobby's life makes the gutsy, thirsting for-excitement Frankie suspicious and together they decide to get to the bottom of this mystery. By staging a mock-accident themselves, Frankie tries to get "a line on" the main culprit only to find herself succumbing to the charm of this young man who soon becomes more of a friend than enemy. When Bobby suddenly comes upon the original of the photograph in the grounds of an asylum, things start getting real warm. Written with the usual Christie elan, The Boomerang Clue has twists and turns on almost every page and keeps you hooked till the perplexing riddle is solved, which is probably not saying very much, since most Christies are unutdownable anyway. A very satisfying read, with more than one murder, and an ambience that threatens many more.Despite the crime and the suspense, the plucky humour of Frankie, though often at Bobby's expense, keeps the novel from getting too dark. ...
