Product Description
This is the first book to gather scientific findings about progressive resistance training and to translate them into relevant and understandable training advice.Author of Powerlifting: A Scientific Approach and an editor for Muscle & Fitness magazine, Dr. Frederick C. Hatfield has written an invaluable book that analyzes training systems and techniques, progressive resistance exercises, nutrition and diet regimens, bodybuilding psychology, and muscle-growth pharmacology in light of actual scientific findings. Whether exploding misconceptions concerning isolation exercises or heavy-duty training; explaining the causes of overtraining, muscle soreness, muscle growth, and muscle shaping; or providing a pictorial history of bodybuilding (along with a history of certain bodybuilding principles), Bodybuilding: A Scientific Approach addresses the real concerns of the serious bodybuilder in a language that can be readily understood. Through use of recent research, charts, graphs, tables, and photos, Dr. Hatfield delivers vital, new information no bodybuilder--male or female--should be without.

  • Rare photographs of early bodybuilding contests
  • Listings of winners from all major contests
  • Advantages and disadvantages of free weights and exercise machines
  • Vitamin and mineral charts listing best sources of nutrients for bodybuilders
  • Pros and cons of steroid use
  • Efficacy ratings of ergogenic aids
  • Latest research findings on relaxation and tension control techniques
Frederick C. Hatfield, PhD, has authored over a dozen books, including Aerobic Weight Training, and scores of research reports and articles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bodybuilding gold standard
After all these years, and a million other books on the subject published in its wake, Fred Hatfield's seminal tome remains one of the best sources of information for anyone interested in serious weight training. The junk science, fad workouts and dubious nutrition suggestions which are commonplace in most other bodybuilding books (lets face it, most muscleheads aren't geniuses) are delightfully absent here, and virtually all the information is stuff you can rely on.If the language is too "difficult" for you, find somebody literate to read it to you!But by all means, get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great starting place
Being an engineer, I like numbers and Dr. Harfield's book lays out a beginner's course by the numbers; what to do, how much, and how to recognize when you're overtrained. It was great for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow
This book is full of good information, and I am a big fan of Dr Hatfield. But at times this can be a difficult read. It is like reading a text book and some of the workout applications are difficult to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book of Bodybuilding Intelligence!
I have purchased many books on bodybuilding and some are better than others when it comes to the training. However, I have found none that compared to this intelligently written book that discussed the importanceof strength training in one's OVERALL health, nor has any book given such aclear example of WHY bodybuilding can be such an important path to aperson's MENTAL, health and outlook. This book has been a goldmine ofmotivation for me....and has given me the REASONS why bodybuilding can besuch a wonderful sport to be involved in.....far beyond the aesthetics. ... Read more

Mike McCormick is a freelance writer and bodybuilding analyst.Amazon.com Review
Bodybuilders, wisdom has it, go through three stages: First, people make fun of them because they're so skinny; then, after they've been training for a while and starting to see results, people admire them because they look so strong and healthy; then, after they've become successful bodybuilders, people make fun of them again because they have so much muscle. The Gold's Gym Encyclopedia is about getting to that third stage and staying there--and not caring what anyone who's not a bodybuilder thinks of the way you look. For the hardest of the hard-core, this book shows the way to hugeness with the latest information about training, nutrition, nutritional supplementation, and, of course, actually competing in the sport of bodybuilding. There's an interesting discussion of high-volume (lots of sets and repetitions of each exercise) vs. high-intensity (one killer set per exercise) training methods and other systems, plus a token caution against using physique-enhancing drugs (followed by a list of drugs that's far longer than the caution preceding it). If Gold's Gym is the mecca of bodybuilding, then this "encyclopedia" is surely the sport's holy text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive source of information on this topic
This it an enormously complete source of accurate information on how to build your body. If you had to limit yourself to one, this is it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Bodybuilding Training Manual with Lots of Exercises,

This book has a nice collection of exercises, with photographs and detailed description on the proper execution techniques for each one of them. The detailed description on each exercise include: The muscles emphasized by the exercise, its starting position, movement performance, exercise variations and training tips.

One valuable aspect of this training book is that at the end of each chapter you will find a lot of routines from Professional bodybuilders and champs. Each muscle is treated with great detail in its own individual book chapter.

In summary, very useful manual, with lots of exercises and routines, and plenty of information on nutrition, aerobics, training techniques and principles as they apply to bodybuilding.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
There's not much to be learned here unless you've never stepped foot in a gym or are a relative beginner. Some of the exercises are shown improperly(e.g. the one-arm dumbell row shows the girl lifting her elbow above her torso at the contracted position - a great way to experience rotator cuff surgery and elbow tendinitis - not uppper back development).

I would say that I learned something from this book, but the fact is I didn't.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent descriptions and pictures of exercises but...
This book had great descriptions and pictures of many types of exercises for each body part, with numerous variations. As far as an encyclopedia of exercises this book is thorough and very useful. As an intermediate lifter I refer to this book when considering altering my routine and substituting exercises to work specific areas.
However the book also reads like a propaganda piece for Golds gym. It is repleat with statements about how it is the best gym in the world, famous European lifters dream of going there, it is the most inspiring place, etc... The text sounds alot like the bottom review, which is nearly directly cut and pasted from the intro. Also the nutrition and supplement sections are very vague, not particularly describing what vitamins might be good, or why.
Finally the lifting recommendations are all HIT training, that is high intensity training, short trips to the gym, ie. 45 min intense work outs. Other theories are excluded. Although I use it as a reference for exercises, the other stuff would make me prefer Arnolds encyclopedia or the various Ironman's books.

4-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GOOD BOOK FOR THE BEGEINER
THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK IF YOUR JUST STARTING OF.IAM ONLY SEVENTEEN AND THIS WAS A GOOD BOOK FOR ME TOO READ.IT TALKS ABOUT THE STUFF THAT IS REALLY OVERLOOKED LIKE NUTRITION(PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATES, AND FATS).IT ALSO TALKS ABOUT SUPPLEMENTS AND THE DANGERS OF DRUGS, IT ALSO NAMES ALL THE ILLEGAL DRUGS THAT MOST PEOPLE USE FOR BODYBUILDING.THIS A REALL GOOD BEGEINERS BOOK. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone can succeed with this book
This book offers great beginner and advanced techniques for bodybuilding. It has helped me gain strength and definition, WITHOUT any drug use. While it is true that the results you see in the photographs are assisted bysupplements, primarily to counteract the lousy diets most of us havetraditionaly eaten.

The Weider system has produced champion afterchampion in the sport.More importantly, it has helped people like meachieve the results we wanted: better strength, weight loss, betterdefinition and better health.

This book will help you avoid the mistakesthat plaque most people starting an excercise program.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fairly good book that goes into depth about body building
Like the other Joe Weider books, there is alot of information about bodybuilding for either the novice or the advance. However the pictures are misleading, because one cannot get the same result without using drugs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ellington Darden is one of the best Bodybuilding Minds...
I have read ALOT of bodybuilding books, and about 95% of them are unacceptable, and full of useless information. I would say that Ellington Darden (in particular in this book) is one of the best.

The basic principles to follow (falls from combo of Arthur Jones, Mentzer, Darden, Parillo):

1. Perfect form on all exercises
-- This means smooth, slow movement - no bouncing, always
-- in control.

2. Heavy weight.
-- You need to tax the muscles, but while following principle
-- #1.

3. Go to Positive failure.
-- I go to failure on every exercise. This is fine as long
-- as you also follow principles #4, #5.

4. Brief Workouts.
-- Few sets. For Chest I do 3 sets bench, 3 sets incline.
-- No need to do 12 - 20 sets for any muscle if you follow
-- principle #3.

5. Get enough recovery.
-- I split my body into 4 parts and work each muscle once
-- every 8 days.

6. Follow good nutrition standards.
-- Eat well, and EAT TO WHAT YOU DO! In other words, you
-- need to get certain nutrients, amounts of protein and
-- carbs, calcium, etc. based on what you do each day. If
-- you aren't working out for a bit - adjust the diet.

7. Eat Frequently.

I could go on for days about what's in this book. It's a great book and the closest to my own workout principles of anything 've read. The only other person I'd recommend reading is Stuart McRobert. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If bodybuilding is your cup of tea?
There is no body on earth that knows more than Arthur Jones and Ellington Darden and those associated with them in the Nautilus Fitness regime! With this information and application of it (okay, genetics too), you will achieve beyond what you would believe with your body. Even if you don't become Mr. Olympia you will increase your strength, looks and stamina to a pinnacle you would never have imagined. Try something that will really blow everyone else away- follow the super slow protocol, explained within.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold
Awsome book with some very interesting and intense workouts, great pics of those fantastic Nautilus machines being used to explain the exercises.Dont forget though unless your 250lbs of solid muscle and super strong the workouts have limiting effect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background information
This book which is based on the concept of High Intensity Training originally developed by Arthur Jones the developer of the Nautilis machines is a good reference for your library of strength training books. If you do a Google search you can get a summary of this technique by Jones himself which adds important dimensions to this concept. Also, the "Power of 10" is a good book on this subject. That book also references Jones and I think Darden as well.Jones was the man, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars GUT CHECK time!
See my review of Super High Intensity Bodybuilding: Nautilus Principles Applied to Free Weights, also by this book's author; my comments regarding Dr. Darden's inspirational writing and photography apply equally here. For bodybuilders of an advanced level, the routines and techniques herein are simply unmatched in intensity and WILL stimulate growth unlike any other regimen you're likely to employ; THIS I can say from personal experience...my best gains ever in my years of working out. You've simply GOT to be willing to outlast, out-suffer, and just plain out-stubborn rhe pain and nausea you'll endure if you've got it in you to follow the directions therein to the letter. For a passionate musclehead as myself, however, sustaining such motivaton isn't quite so forbidding a possibility when you're actually stronger and taping out bigger every two weeks or so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic bodybuilding reference
Considered to be among the best advanced technique bodybuilding books ever published, the book covers fundamentals as well as in-depth advanced techniques and training methodology. It has detailed (yet easy to follow) text as well as numerous photo diagrams and charts. A must have reference for any serious bodybuilding enthusiast. -- (now out of print in any form, the book has become quite a sought after item by personal trainers as well as individuals) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book by a great guy!
This is the first book of its kind...a guide to vegan bodybuilding & fitness, complete with sample diets & workouts specific to many scenarios (competitive and otherwise), as well as some very inspirational chapters on pursuing your dreams. He is 1 of the most incredible people I've ever met.I highly recommend watching his videos on YouTube. My favorite observation of his is the 2/7ths rule---that most people sadly live their uninspired lives for 2/7ths of the week (their days off). It's wonderful to read something written by an amazing man absolutely doing his life's calling. This is NOT JUST for bodybuilders.I highly recommend it to any present, aspiring or curious vegan. He goes into great detail about a variety of important subjects to bodybuilders & laymen alike, such as the protein (and other nutrients) content of dozens of foods, detailed explanations of muscle-specific exercises, training regimens, vegan supplements & every fitness tip you could ever want.He even throws in his top 10 vegan restaurants, vegan-friendly cities & recommendations for vegan products such as clothing (an oft-forgotten aspect of veganism; it's not just about diet).I was so enthralled by his writing, I read it in 1 sitting.A very impressive effort for a first-time author (he is working on 2 other books); extremely informative, incredibly inspirational & a surprisingly entertaining read (every other fitness book I've perused put me to sleep).I can honestly say this book surpassed any expectations I had.I assure you VB&F will not disappoint! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More calories to get lean, counterintuitive!
Yet that is just want John Parrillo wants you to do in your quest to get bigger and leaner. I've owned many copies of this book over the years, and it's one that I return to consistently. You will see that many nutrition and coaches today advocating increasing calories and activity to fire up your metabolism, in short, you will be eating a lot and exercising a lot. That's nothing new, John was advocating it back in the late 80's and early 90's. Morning fasted state cardio? Yup, John had us pounding the pavement back when Haney was still Mr. O! Advanced stretching techniques to force your muscles to accomodate size increases? Yes siree, John Parrillo was already there.

Although this book could have been way more detailed and contained less photos, it's a good primer for his systems available on his website. This was relevant then, and it's a great book to add to your collection now. There are other better books about getting into contest condition, but this one is a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old book with a great twsit to training!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, most scientific approach
This is a book built on scientific fact and research, not hunches and unverified hypotheses. It's simply teh best, most scientific book I've ever seen on weight lifting and building muscle FAST.And the approach, if you can stomach it, works INCREDIBLY.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent first class
One of the best research facilities is the human mind. Many valid answers regarding exercise can be derived with the use of sound premises and logic.
The h.i.t. principles are based on accepted facts. Most of these facts are not new. They have been known to the scientific community for more than 100 years. Arthur Jones and Ellington Darden did not discover or claim to discover any of them. He merely assembled them into a logical framework to provide valid conclusions about high intensityexercise. No one had done that before. Or really has done
The h.i.t, philosophy is the only exercise philosophy that can be derived logically from the facts and principles of the classical sciences. Does that necessarily make h.i.t. correct? No. And it does not necessarily make illogically conceived approaches to exercise wrong.
But logic does confer on h.i.t. a high probability of being correct for building great size and strength but most people cant tolerate the pain and intensity of this kind of trading yes it is the hard most properly the hardest and most result producing there is but most people back away
first class better that all the other miss leading books aound 90% dont work and do have the science backing
this is excellent first class

5-0 out of 5 stars Still ahead of its time........
......This book was written in the early 70's based off of scientific research of what works and what doesn't in training. It is by far the most forward thinking and logical book on the subject...I treasure my copy forgiving me new found focus in my training with results due to high intensitywith minimum time..............Needs to be put back into circulation to setall the misinformation aside that exists amoung the uninformed and marketmanipulated public............

Product Description
"I built my American dream one rep at a time," says Bob Paris in Gorilla Suit, an unguarded memoir of his rise to the top of the world of professional bodybuilding.

This is the first-ever, honest, behind-the-scenes look into the world of professional bodybuilding and what the actual life of a bodybuilder is like. Paris show us bodies to the limit, and beyond, and discusses the price bodybuilders pay for this perfection, which includes the use of dangerous growth drugs. Paris also looks at the driving forces behind the business of bodybuilding, including the extraordinary story of the Weider brothers.

This is a story about chasing a dream, being willing to do anything to get that dream, and then growing frustrated with the world that dream is lived in. It is the discovery that after years of climbing a mountain and finally reaching the top, perhaps on reconsideration it was the wrong mountain to begin with.
Amazon.com Review
Bob Paris became famous as the first openly gay Mr. Universeand grew even more famous when he and Rob Jackson, his lover at thetime, published Straight from the Heart, a memoir of their lifetogether. Paris has now gone solo with Gorilla Suit. A crossbetween a personal memoir and a cultural history of bodybuilding,Gorilla Suit details Paris's desire to radically change hisbody, what that meant to him as a gay man living in a homophobicculture, and his decision to leave the sport once he discovered howseductive its destructive qualities were. Gorilla Suit is notan emotionally wrought literary memoir, or even a tell-allexposé; rather, it is a well-written, perceptive, andultimately joyful story of a gay man's discovery of what it means tolove his body. ... I borrowed this book from a friend of mine who, long ago, was something of a gym-rat.Knowing nothing about the culture of "body beautiful" except from a cold historical persepctive, I thought it was time to read something by someone who "has been there."And Paris did not disappoint in that regard.Using a simple, basic style of writing mercifully free of the hysterical tone that mars far too many "tell alls," Paris reveals a world where steroids were once the norm, where supplements became a grotesque mockery of good health and fitness, where professionial body builders follow horrific and dangerous regimens to achieve their unique look, and where the entire empire was ruthlessly governed by Joe Weider and others in a virtual monopoly of what could be called a socially acceptable variant of the "flesh trade."I cannot say whether or not Paris' observations about the various personalities are accurate, but if they are, professional bodybuilding was a world built on a few household names and a grossly exploited mass of others. It's a sad and depressing read in parts, and Paris' seething (albeit justifiable) anger comes through on every page.

I had to give it three stars though for lack of development and marginal editing.Paris' personal struggles, the most interesting part of the book, just rang a little hollow in that he seemed to spend more time complaining about his life's misfortunes than analyzing them in any meaningful way.It is clear that he wrote this book as his own personal - and probably well-deserved - catharsis. In that, I would have appreciated a more reflective tone than the angrier tone he achieved. But, his intentions were clearly very good. And that counts for something.Still, I would have liked more candor, a more personal tone.Perhaps at the time he wrote the book, he was not ready for such a discussion. But, that does not change the fact that the omission did affect the overall presentation somewhat negatively.

If you enjoy books about sports personalities or sports critique, I can recommend "Gorilla Suit."I would also recommend it for any young man or woman considering entering the world of professional bodybuilding for its value as a cautionary tale.Otherwise, I think the more casual reader would not enjoy it overmuch.

No firm recommendation one way or the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book
I have been into bodybuilding for a few years now, and own a small library of bodybuilding books. Other than Samuel Fussell, however, Bob Paris' book is the only one that REALLY gives insight into the world of bodybuilding. He lays it all bare, and pulls no punches. Everything is here; the training, the drugs, the lifestyle. And all the famous faces are here too: Arnold, Joe Weider, etc, and Mr. Paris has no quips about writing the reality of how he was treated (gay or not) under the empire of the IFBB. For a raw view into the bodybuilding lifestyle, you can't do any better than this book. As Fussell himself said, "Paris is the only bodybuilder with biceps and balls." And he nailed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorilla Suit,An Honest Look From Inside The World Of Bodybuilding
Back in the late 80's I was seriously into weight training/bodybuilding on the average of 5 or more days per week.I did it for the sheer love of doing it, not as someone with competitive aspirations (or the right genetics for bodybuilding even if I had aspirations:))

Ibought many books on bodybuilding, starting w/ Arnold's (no last name necessary) encyclopedia. I also spent a small fortune buying up muscle mags each month like crazy. While certainly Arnold was one of my favorites of all time (I still think no one can touch him regarding the combination of size and symmetry he had), the guys I could relate to the most back then were primarily the symmetry guys like Zane, Nubret, LaBrada, Benfatto and Bob Paris. If I could have picked a body to have for myself, those would have been the types of models I'd have chosen rather than the Lee Haney's or Dorian Yates type of physique.

I remember all those years ago, reading Bob's "coming out of the closet" story in Ironman. I was probably as surprised as everyone else was. It didn't change my positive opinion of him as a bodybuilder or person (from what I had read about him) in any way. In fact after the surprise wore off I had to commend him for having the sheer guts to do what he did (for the record I am a heterosexual male but not a homophobic one). He had to know it was going to upset the powers that be (ie. the Weider empire).

I recently took Bob's book, "Gorilla Suit", out from my library and I was really impressed, once more, with his candor. I also found his life story to be very interesting. The story of a lost soul searching to find his path in the world. His innocence regarding the nature of the field of bodybuilding and his desire to achieve his dreams was compelling to me.

I didn't find this book to be a sour grapes thing at all. In fact in the end of the book he says that the best feeling he ever had in his life was when he was announced the winner of his major titles. Still, the fact is that he revealed a lot of what IS wrong w/ bodybuilding. All one has to do is look at the physiques inthe current magazines to see how obviously "juiced up" these guys are.

They've taken a sport that could be so inspirational and motivational to so many people and have turned it into a freak show of sorts, taking it into very unhealthy realm. The extreme use of drugs in most professional bodybuilding shows (w/rare natural shows being a tiny minority) has given these athletes physiques that are not human looking. I commend Bob for always remaining true to his vision of what a body could look like. Even when he used drugs to stay competitive he looked more like a statue of a Greek God rather than a cartoon super hero.

One point I'd like to end with. I read the book "muscle" many years ago by that fellow Fussel. While that was certainly an interesting take on the bodybuilding scene, there is one factor that I can't ignore when looking at that compared w/ the Paris book. Bob Paris was a world class bodybuilder, he had been pretty high up on the mountain and speaks from inside the bodybuilding world from that perspective whereas Fussel was a non-entity in the bodybuilding world.

While that doesn't invalidate Fussel's book, I just find that Paris' book just has that extra credibility factor by being written by a guy who was a major player in the field regardless of whether he won the Olympia or not. Let's face it, in a field as subjective as bodybuilding it's hard to say that someone is the best because best isn't etched in stone. Franco Columbu certainly could have possibly beaten Arnold at least one time if they were both the same height, and Lee Labrada (in my opinion) could have done the same to Lee Haney at least a couple of time if he were Lee's height.

Anyway, I think that Bob Paris tells a riveting story of his life in the world of bodybuilding. It's only his personal perspective, but I came away from it feeling that he was completely honest in how things unfolded for him.

Also, while he criticizes Joe Weider (he's not the only one, even Arnold in "Education Of A Bodybuilder" speaks of the fact that Joe Weider had no problem buying a steak dinner for a competitor one day and then screwing him in a business deal the next), he also credits Joe as well with the success he had as a bodybuilder. Some reviews tried to make it as if Bob does nothing but rag on Weider and that's not the case at all. From all accounts, Weider and his brother Ben have a monopoly in the bodybuilding world and that is not healthy for ANY profession.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ex-Mr Universe Tells His Story -explosive and fascinating inside look at the bodybuilding industry
"Gorilla Suit" is the name Bob Paris gives his set of fabulous muscles.

I really, REALLY enjoyed this book!We get the run down from Bob starting off as an awkward teenager finding the weights room in his high school gym, unused and dusty when he goes looking for a fan for a teacher. He lifts a few weights, likes the way he feels then starts training. From there we read about his trip to LA, to the 'big gyms' like World Gym and Gold's, where Arnie et al are working out.It is really is a rags to riches story, as when he first goes to LA he is sleeping in the back of his car.

Bob Paris takes on the titles of Mr LA, Mr California right up to his dream title, Mr Universe, the same spot Arnold Schwartzenegger occupied.

Most interesting in this book is Bob's struggle with Joe Weider -apparently the man, his companies and IFBB (international Federation of Body Building) were all inter-related and competitions quite political.Bodybuilders survived on endorsement contracts from supplement companies, and at the time Weider's companies had a monopoly on the industry and bodybuilders.Amazingly too, most bodybuilders took copious amounts of drugs and steroids, until I read this book I naively had no idea.

And Bob's story is personal too, his struggle with the discipline of maintaining his 'gorilla suit', relationships and being true to himself in an industry that isn't -is fascinating.

Definitely a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very brilliant!
Bob Paris takes the chance to tell us his personal story as well as the evolution of the bodybuilding world in the last twenty years. "Gorilla suit" is a very well written autobiography, with an unusual sensitivity. Paris takes a boldly stance against some of the worst sides of bodybuilding, and he doesn't mince words against some of the people involved as well. The author tells us his life very candidly: his struggle against the odds to win his way in the competitions, the use of steroids, the people who tried to cheat him and the ones that helped him. I found in this book many thought-provoking passages, but in the same time the style is clean and easy to read. Bob Paris has been successful in life AND in bodybuilding with his own personal style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!! Must have!
This is an awesome book, not only for amateurs but for those of us that have been in the gym for years. The cycles are great, and it outlines and entire year worth of workouts and how to execute them with perfect form. I was immediately impressed with this book and recommend it for anyone getting into weight lifting or want to up their weight lifting regime. To top it off this book also including a nutrition program.

3-0 out of 5 stars I really like their workout program
I like this book; great workout plans, really worked for me.I liked how they included good cycling of diffirent phases of excercise.I didnt care much for the nutrition section but might be useful to some.
The technique section is really good with very helpful diagrams
I didnt like the actual quality of the book isnt that good it fell apart too soon to my liking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
All bodybuilders need this magazine. High quality of all pictures and great tips. I recomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to Maintain or get started
FLEX has put out an excellent guide for bodybuilders and your ordinary recreational gym rat.An excellent manual with outstanding pictures to show positions and excercises to be performed.I've been lifting recreationally for 13 yrs and would recommend this book.Great diet and supplement section to help you maintain your workouts and increase muscle and strength gains

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but needs overview urgently!
"HUGE A Complete Regimen from Bodybuilding's Superstars" (2007) is not a new book! Rather it is the renamed version of "HUGE Everything You Need to Get Really Big" (2003). The deepnotes and footnote references are all wrong! Because they're based on the 2003 version. It says "see the chart on pages 125 and 126" but the correct charts are on pages 113 and 114. I have already bought the 2003 version and since the name is different I thought this was a new book. But it wasn't. So I wasted my money for nothing but a wrong edited book. Still if you need a book for building a great body I recommend it... But instead of paying that much money go and get a second hand that is 10 times cheaper and good edited. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype
Joe Weider destroyed bodybuilding. Prior the rise of the Weider empire, and the drugs and mis-information that are a huge part of it, bodybuilding was a healthy endeavor. Before the early 1960's bodybuilders actually got big and stayed big for deacdes without drugs. Training programs were sensable and healthy. A guy like Grimek or Clancy Ross could compete at a natural 220 lbs., look great for deacades and live to a ripe old age. Weider and the drug culture that he promoted ruined all that. Weider created a system where the only way to win was to get bigger and bigger year after year. Of course this means taking more and more drugs. All the while Weider is raking in the cash while guys like Andreas Munzer and Mohammed Benaziza (sp?) died horrible deaths chasing down that Sandow trophy. Their blood is on Weiders hands. To all the young guns tempted by Weider and the glossy magazines (muscle comics), realize this.....it's all an illusion. You can't have what you see is those ridiculous magazines. There is nothing in those magazines that is going to help you in any way. They exist solely to sell suppliments that you don't even need. There is a better way. Forget Weider and the fantasy he sells. Study the ways of the old timers who got big before drugs were even available. They got big and stayed big. They were as strong as they looked. They were as mentally healthy as they were physically healthy. They didn't wind up killing themselves like DeMayo, or killing others like Bertil Fox or Craig Titus. There was a Golden Age of bodybuilding that existed before you or I were even born. Ironically, this is the only time that Joe Weider, himself, ever had ANY muscle. Back then men got big by using what worked and scrapping what was nonsense. These days no one is getting big. Forget Weider and the unatainable fantasy he sells. Work towards something that you can actually achieve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Builds Mass
The title I'm referring to is 'Joe Weider's Bodybuilding System', which I hope is what this title is also referring to.This is an old book, at least 10-12 years anyway, from when I first bought it.I noticed the results of following the training routines within a month. But I had been diligently following some routines from a set of instructions that came with a set of York barbells and plastic plates.I had started the York-based routines and had been following them for about a year at that time. The cumulative results from all of the York procedures was some 'extraordinary' definition in my upper back and some bruising in the joints between my upper and lower arms that never went away all during the York-based training. That was all.

The results from the Weider system, however, were remarkably more pronounced. However, due to scholastic stress and time contraints I had to discontinue all weight-training after a mere month and a half into the Weider system. However, my chest and upper arms were really starting to pack on the mass.I measured the progress, and my arms had increased by two to three inches.Hopefully I'll be able to re-claim lost progress when I try these routines out again, ten years later.

There was also another side affect:I was helping my Dad move furniture one evening during the Weider training when this stinging, itchy feeling started in my armpits.A day later, there were some purple stretch marks stretching from my armpits up and over along the inner side of my upper arms. It's something to watch out for perhaps; what to really do about it, I truly don't know. But it's more proof that the Weider system really works to some degree--even without 'unnatural' supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow it religiously
If you want to get big, follow everything what this book says, religiously. This is the best book in bodybuilding I read so far.You may also want to read "Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding".Another comprehensive although lengthy book.Only read this if you are serious. But for everyone else, Weider's book is fine and to the point.I have been working out for four years now and I must say the most important things about building muscle is not to overdo it, change it up often to trick the muscles, and mentally, think BIG.I believe these are universal points because as you will find out, many muscle building tips are not and are different for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy 3 books on bodybuilding, this should be one.
Contains all of the classic excercises and routines. This is a great back-to-basics source and was the source for most of the excercises I used to become huge 12 years ago. After years of neglect I dug it out andstarted building my routine again (all-natural, this time). There's nosubstitute for hard work and this book describes correct form andintensification techniques. Combine it with The Complete Book of Abs andBikram's Beginning Yoga, for a powerhouse workout trio. ... Read more

Product Description
Pax Beale started lifting weights at the age of 53 to strengthen a bad back. He loved it so much that within a year he was competing in bodybuilding contests. Then, at the age of 61, with a national bodybuilding championship and a Mr. U.S.A. title under his belt, he was diagnosed with crippling heart disease.

After less-than-desirable results from a five-way coronary bypass, Pax's prognosis was still dire. Although his symptoms stabilized, he was essentially a heart cripple with only 25% of his maximum heart efficency, allegedly irreversible dead heart tissue, and the danger of an enlarged heart. He needed a miracle and ultimately got one. Now, with a body of his dreams in his 70s, Pax has quite a story to tell. Not only did he manage to recover from surgery and completely reverse his heart disease, he went on to win yet another national bodybuilding championship.

This book tells his inspiring true story and outlines the specific step-by-step program and philosophy that made his miraculous journey from heart surgery to national bodybuilding champion possible. He explains the four steps - nutrition, training, supplements, and the principle of total commitment - in great detail and presents important research into the cardiac benefits of weight-resistance training. He also introduces the nutritional supplement Creatine/Pyruvate, which his research supports was the pivotal component of his remarkable recovery.

One quickly realizes that Pax's comeback isn't a miracle after all. It was a result of hard work, research, and resourcefulness. Now he offers the knowledge he gained and the proven results of his experience in order to help others prevent or reverse America's number one killer - heart disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative
This book altered my perceptions on heart disease and the way I approach my life in general. The author, Pax Beale reversed his heart disease; I previously thought this was impossible. You internalize Mr. Beale's teachings because he speaks from the heart figuratively and literally using eccentric quips and his own earned life truths. I would recommend this book for anyone struggling with health, heart disease, and for anyone wanting to excel in life. He lights a fire under your ass, plain and simple.

I no longer choose to be a spectator.

This is a great read and I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review from an "old friend"
It's been my pleasure to have known Pax Beale for 35 years.I knew him "pre-body for the ages", when he simply had what we used to refer to as a "good build".He & I were running buddies, and his coaching & companionship helped me to achieve many of my running goals. He has certainly had an incredible life of "experience".I can attest to the many zany challenges that he took on, which were held as crazy endeavors by his friends (& with which he now agrees). His book is a great deal to digest, but it certainly can motivate anyone who reads it to do SOMETHING to improve their life, both mentally & physically. So Pax, my friend, when will you be conducting your 1st Body for The Ages Seminar?

5-0 out of 5 stars Body for the Ages; From Heart Surgery to Bodybuilding Champi
This is a very readable and enjoyable book. Not only does it tell the tale of an amazing life but really gives great advice of what to do and how to do it. I appreciated the pictures of how perform certain excercise routines but some of the pictures could have been better.... I enjoyed it and derived a great of information on how to change my workout routines. And it clearly show that that there can be a great life after a heart attack.I would be curious to see if there is a follow up book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure re-discovered
I first read this book back in high school when I borrowed it from my town's public library. I digested it, and still train to this day in accord with it's basic guidance (going on to nidan in judo, no less). I tried for many years to locate another copy of it, to no avail until very recently. A treasure, re-discovered! It really does "feed the need" of every young man, providing the guidance one seeks to grow bigger and stronger, as well as to be able to walk the streets with the calm certainty that you & yours are well-protected. The training routine it epouses is a bare-bones whole body schedule of basic, compound exercises. No periodization, cycling, cross-training, steroids, split routines, or even nutritional supplementation. No FRILLS, in other words. What is DOES have, is the same essential approach that has built more muscle on more people over the years, than ALL the above mentioned distractions combined. On the self-defense half of the book, you're schooled in textbook judo and jujutsu. For the same reasons the musclebuilding half of the book wouldn't appeal to some (doesn't have extravagant claims or bloated, steroid-gutted monkies posing for the photos, leaving some to say, "It's too simple! It couldn't possibly work!"), some will dismiss the self-defense instruction herein as outdated or overly simplistic. Not so! The moves are largely gross motor movements, as opposed to the fine motor skills which one rapidly loses when the heartbeat starts racing. In other words, drill yourself & your training partner in these moves and they'll be there WHEN YOU NEED THEM; more complex choreographed drills trained with respectful and compliant partners in your dojo WON'T. Art is beautiful and absolutely WONDERFUL to develop so don't stop...when it comes to SURVIVAL in the worst circumstances, however, you need the kind of bedrock simplicity typified by the instruction in this book. The muscles you will build, furthermore, will serve to deter at least some aggressors toward "easier looking" victims, or, failing that, power your strikes and help you resist his. This obscure, almost unknown book from the early 60s is terribly under-appreciated and the author deserves way more recognition!
