4-0 out of 5 stars Complete Conditioning for Basketball
Very good info on what scouts evaluate on.Charts of data on how other recruited athletes rank is info that is very valuable and I have no idea where else I would find this data.It provides data on how well recruited athletes performed in each of the physical tests described in the book. You will know very quickly if you are close, and if not, what you need to improve on.If you're serious about basketball, get this book sooner rather than later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is awesome. The drills and workouts are all illustrated and straightforward. The DVD is great too if you're like me and haven't done much drill or lifting before. The beginning of the book also has a bunch of stats on players from high school all the way through the NBA Draft, so you can compare your results to somehting tangible to get a fell for where you're at.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading this Book/DVD
This book provides good inside looks for specific conditioning methods of basketball. It's detailed and the DVD is a great help to understand the correct execution, though not all excercises in the book are shown on the DVD. This Source of Basketball Conditioning includes all the important factors of the ball game as warm up, conditioning, strength, power, speed and agility. It also provides a guideline how to handle this methods in practice and includes a whole season conditioning schedule with lots of schedules and tables.

As you are probably interested of the benefitial side of the book, you may ask the question: "Does the book help myself beeing a better coach/player? Is it possible to include the provided information into my practices?"

As i read the whole book and worked some stuff out of it, i can recommend it as a must for all ambitious coaches at all levels (Youth, Pros), though keep in mind that it is always great to have different sources on the same topic on your book shelve, so you can make up your mind and create youre own style of conditioning methods.
BUT: As you have developed your style, this book may be the one you put on your everyday usage shelve.

As i recommend this great source there are some restrictions for the usage.
First, a little part of the strenght excercises do not seem to be healthy especially for youth players with weak back muscles. (Don't be irritated, the books excercises are made by specialists)
Second, there are some facility limitations. To get the best out of this book, well you need access of a basketball court including a seperate gym for the strength/power exercising. Some excercises indlude agility leaders, swiss balls etc. Be aware that the very useful drills include this facility inventory.
Third, for basketball coaches be aware that conditioning is at best when it starts at preseason. So the time factor is a great deal, if you have a stable team and good organization you can get more out of this book than with youth teams, who meet themselves and start practicing 2 weeks in front of the first game.

Hope this quick feedback helps you out there to evaluate the use of this book for yourself!

Take care,
Alexander Wermuth

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for advanced athletes and advanced high school players
This is a very sound book and I learned some great ideas.I am not an expert in strength and conditioning but over the years have had to learn enough to do a decent job of conditioning my teams. This book has TONS of information and ideas on how to specifically condition basketball players.

For basketball coaches, who are not strength coaches, this is a great resource. My only reservation about this book is that a lot of the material suggested, and again this is my non-expert opinion, works best for athletes who are already at a reasonably advanced level of conditioning, juniors and seniors in high school who have been through a conditioning program for several years, college players and professional players.

Still, it is a book on my coaching book shelf and it has been really worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basketball IQ +
Coaches: YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK
Players: If your on cour abilities are above average you may like this book it really makes you think of everything in a new way. While it does have a few moves to add into your arsenal it will not teach you anything fancy like spin moves, crossovers, or to many go to moves. as i said before its not a book for beginners it's for people who can somewhat play the game already. its more about the little details of the game and things that will raise your game in any setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest basketball Book For Learning The Game The Right Way

5-0 out of 5 stars An accidental gem
This book was given to me by a player of mine who attended "Point Guard College" over the summer to sharpen her skills. I only started reading it to see what she was learning. What a surprise! The title of this book is absolutely true -- players should know this stuff -- and it also provides valuable teaching points for coaches as well. I was able to learn new ways to relay the fundamentals to my players, and I really do feel like this book helped me as a coach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I've read many basketball books. This book, along with Coaching Basketball Successfully by Morgan Wooten, are my favorites.

He covers all the individual basics that your player needs to works on like ball-handling, layups, jumpshots, passing, defense, and rebounding. These are things they need to do on their own, else they won't develop the skill.

He covers team offense and defense. He provides simple basic concepts. These are applicable to recreational leagues that have limited practice time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good all around starter book
I was asked to coach my son's basketball team for the YMCA.Not being a big fan of the game, I needed a good introduction and skill fundamentals for third and fourth graders.

The book covered all aspect for someone new at coaching basketball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome tool for new coaches
Great tool for first time coaches. I'm coaching 7 year olds that never played basketball before and this is helping me coordinate my practice and game plans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for youth basketball coaches
I have coached kids (boys and girls) in basketball of ages 4-12, this book provided the best information on what to do and what to expect.Particularly, the part of patience, repetition/reinforcement, and the fundalmentals. The recommended offensive plays (post interchange, wheel, shuffle, etc.) and defensive strategies (whether man-to-man or zone) are excellent.Additionally, the chapters on vision, motivational phrases, and running a practice are worth reading. The author recommends the use of parents during practice time, called "stations" to maximize proper skill development. This book is a must for those interested in coaching youth basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book on B.Ball for youth, with tips for parents
This book does a good job of covering the basics, including the fundemental of shooting, dribbling, passing, pick and roll, give and go, fakes, etc. with good photos.Good section on defense fundamentals too. There are also sections on offense and defense (both man-to-man & zone)with diagrams. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for starting coaches
This is a great book for coaches that are in their first years and need a little help to spice up their offense and defense.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Carolina System in a book!
This was the second coaching book I ever purchased and after 20+ years I still refer to it! There is a reason Carolina has been so successful and a big part of it was the coaching wizardry of Dean Smith. The other part was the exceptional players and coaches who benefited from Coach Smith's guidance and instruction.

This book, like Wooden's Practical Modern Basketball, covers nearly every aspect, big and large, of the Carolina system. For young coaches who are trying to learn how to organize a program this book is excellent! For veteran coaches who are trying to learn nuances of coaching the game of basketball, this is also a great source of information.

Sometimes it is hard to believe Coach Smith wrote this book while he was still coaching, allowing his competitors to have such a detailed look inside his program and coaching methodology! We should be thankful Coach Smith believed in sharing his wisdom to other coaches!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Guide was very complete.
I really liked how the book was layed out. Easy to find the information you wanted.Very informative, easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely complete! -- a must-have book for coaches at all levels!
As a basketball coach who reads a lot of books, coaching materials, and so forth for personal use and for my hoopsu.com reviews, I have read many so-called 'guides to basketball'.Some are decent, but most of them are so basic and watered-down that you could learn more watching an 8-year old in her driveway. The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball is not one of those books.

The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball is far and away the most complete book I have read on the basics, fundamentals, and strategies of basketball. This is a great book for coaches at all levels; girl's or boy's.Coach Mullaney didn't just slap some notes between a book cover; he obviously put forth a lot of time and effort writing this book.It is extremely well organized, easy to read, and simple to understand.

The main thing I like about this book, in comparison to many of the other 'guides', is that it goes well beyond the basic cookie-cutter information. The basics are discussed, but Coach Mullaney goes further and describes more in-depth and pertinent topics, ideas, and drills. That is why this book is not only great for the first-time coach, but also for even the most experienced of coaches at all levels of play.

I also really enjoy Part One of the book, where Coach Mullaney guides you through developing your own plan, philosophy and communication skills. This is an area I would have found invaluable when I first began coaching.

The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball also details offense, defense, and special situations by breaking down all the skills involved and teaching how to perform them effectively. The drills section is also very well put together with over 200 exceptional drills - with easy to follow diagrams. All facets of the game are touched on so you can use these drills to help prepare yourself or your team.

The title says, 'The Complete Guide to Girls' Basketball', which it most certainly! If you coach girls basketball, this book is must-have addition to your library. If you coach boys basketball, I also recommend this book...there are so many great ideas in here it is worth checking out!If you want to improve your coaching knowledge and coaching skills, The Complete Guide to Girls' Basketball deserves a look! ... Five-Star Basketball Camps have long been synonymous with quality basketball instruction -- some of the best players in the world have been Five-Star campers: including Michael, Patrick, Isaiah, Moses, Christian, Alonzo, Grant, Stephon, The Rainman, Elton, Allan, Jayson and Vince! In 1999 eight former Five-Star Campers were selected as NBA first round draft picks: Elton Brand, Steve Francis, Richard Hamilton, Ron Artest, Trajan Langdon, Dion Glover, Corey Maggette and Jumaine Jones! As a longtime leader in basketball instruction, Five-Star feels it must continue in its quest to educate young players about their sport. About 20 years ago, Five-Star published a book based on the drills and teachings of their boys' camps Five-Star Basketball Drills, that has become an essential part of every coach's library. In 2000, Five-Star compiled and produced the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art collection of drills by girls' and women's coaches ever assembled. Ten thousand copies were sold in the first two years of its publication. In 2003, we are pleased to announce the publication of an updated version of Five-Star Girls' Basketball Drills with more of what was loved in the first edition: more great drills, more great coaches, more information on how to make the most of your playing time as a player and how to get the most out of your team if you are a coach! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars As a Coach I Recommend this Book
I have coached girls basketball for the last 12 years at AAU and high school levels and am always looking for more drills to add to my practice plan.I have read through half the book and already marked more than 20 drills I plan to implement. These drills have the creativity I was looking for and are basic enough to not absorb a ton of practice time explaining. There are both team and individual drills that I have marked as very useful. The author did an excellent job of acquiring drills from several coaches from all over the country to compile this book. The only improvement needed is some of the drills lack detailed explanation.

5-0 out of 5 stars good practice material
There are a great variety of drills from all over the country and different programs, and they encompass every skill development need and many possible numbers of players I could be working with at any one time. It is a great boost to my normal practice plan and drills.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Five-Star in Your Basketball Coaching Library
Join some of the nation's finest womens' coaches as they share the drills they use at the most premiere women's camp in the country. The book contains ten chapters (over 100 Drills) that examines everything from nutrition to skill development. Coaches sharing drills include Tara Van Derveer, Joe Ciampi, Matt Brzycki, Kristie Curry, and more.
If you truly understand basketball this book is even better than the First Edition.Although in-depth, this book is not complicated or hard to understand. It is a user friendly resource, that any coach or player, should possess. This book is a must for the beginner, intermediate and/or advanced player/coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greg
As a curriculum director of summer sports camps for Basketball I highly recommend this book to all coaches. It challenges players to learn proper techniques, but more importantly it challenges players to think about their decision making, and to understand concepts of vision and space. (Difficult for many, so lets help make it easier). The book is ideal for working with youth players, the philosophy behind the book and the drills are fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Physical Education Teacher...what is H.A.'s profession
Just out of curiosity, I would like to know the back ground on the person who reviewed this book named H.A.It is obvious that he or she did not have a background in education or youth developement. Having worked with over thousands of students I can safely say that H.A. doesn't have a clue on what kids can really understand. If it is over your head then you have no business trying to teach it to the kids.Feel free to reply or email..

5-0 out of 5 stars Owner/director of youth camps...great tool for any age.
As a director of youth basketball camps I found Dr. Garland's book priceless. There are few books written on space and movement like this one.You can never have enough drills to reinforce movement on and off the ball. The illustrations could help even the begginner level coach have a taste at success.
There are a great deal of inexperienced coaches and parents that could bennifit from this book.I use it and it works.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extremely Valuable Basketball Coaching Book!
Basketball books I have read by the dozen. None like this one though. Jim Garland's approach to teaching the game is totally unique. How many times have you seen kids at basketball practices standing in lines waiting for their turn? How many times have you seen teams with one or two players who move around on offense while the others stand watching? These drills involve kids constantly in the skills and concepts of the game without ever waiting in lines.Garland's drills teach coaches how to get those players to move intelligently on the court, help teammates get the ball in good places, see open players, and how to play defense within a team concept. What's amazing is that the drills are so well thought out, they do the teaching for you. Most drills are a game within themselves but as players strive to "win" the drill, they are improving in their understanding of the very concept you were trying to get across. Product Description

The indispensible, amazingly illustrated companion to today's NBA—a roundball Rosetta Stone that hilariously decodes the trends and tendencies of pro basketball.

The NBA of the moment is a league of hugely charismatic celebrities, crackling aesthetic intrigue, sociopolitical undercurrents, and raw humanity: every Kobe Bryant pump-fake or LeBron James dunk holds within it a Shaq-size load of meaning. The Macro-Phenomenal NBA Almanac is a one-of-a-kind guide to this tumultuous and exciting league. In a series of brilliantly illustrated chapters—from Master Builders like Tim Duncan to Destiny’s Kids like Amare Stoudemire to Lost Souls like Lamar Odom—the almanac breaks down the styles of the NBA’s most colorful characters, showing what each one reveals through his play and conduct, both on the court and off. Filled with some of the smartest, funniest sportswriting known to fankind, this book will cast an entirely new light on one of our favorite games.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month, December 2008: From its mouthful of a name, you might expect The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac to be one of the new breed of fantasy-friendly stathead sports guides in the vein of the Baseball Prospectus. Or, from its blogger pedigree (via the popular FreeDarko.com), you might assume it's one of those quickie blog-into-book projects that repurposes new-media content into an old-media package. But it's neither--not even close. Bucking the data-crunching trend, the Almanac's pseudonymous authors instead embrace the mythical side of pro sports, reminding us that the difference between, say, LeBron and AI lies not just in 0.2 ppg but in the rich drama of potential, style, and lore that each star represents. And the Almanac is no blog: it's every inch a book, freshly imagined and gorgeously designed, with colorful, smart graphics that give dimension to figures from Tim "Mechanical Gothic" Duncan to Stephon "Hategoat" Marbury. With a foreword, fittingly, by Gilbert Arenas, the NBA star whose kooky, self-concocted "Agent Zero" persona often overshadows his knee-hobbled game, the Almanac is the ideal midseason treat for the casual fan and the deep obsessive alike. --Tom Nissley

In the illustrations below, artists from the Free Darko collective give their unique take on two of basketball's "Master Builders"--Kobe Bryant, the perfectionist, and Tim Duncan, a methodical player of gothic proportions. (Click the images to enlarge)

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away!
This book is the worst I have ever read! It gives you absolutely nothing. Just empty trivial facts about a few players in the NBA..

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely creative...but almost too much so for a purist
I was searching through amazon.com for a nice statistical analysis on NBA basketball.

This book somehow came across my screen and after reading the previous customer reviews, I decided to give it a try.

The book is extremely creative, contains intersting animations, poetry and a truly unique twist on the way most sports books are written. In this book, the author details various players and compares their attributes, overall style of play in the manner that one would usually attribute to a Greek mythological character.

As for someone who has read his share of sports books, this one clearly ranks above most in terms of quality of writing and is probably one of the more creative pieces I have ever seen.

Still, I feel as if the creativity is done at an extreme level here. The author gets carried away too often with his descriptions and at times the reader will get confused with the extremely high level analogies.

Overall a very interesting and quick read, definitley worth the amazon price and worthwhile if you have guests over. This book will turn some heads and perhaps show off your creative-sports side...if you have one.

5-0 out of 5 stars delicious
yes, a rare adjetive for a basketball book, but this one is special. Great sense of humor, truly original and very interesting. Cool curious stats, nice draws and, in summary, a great reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what a basketball stat freak needs!
This was the exact book I was looking for to give to my cousin! He is a basketball freak and loves stats! This is the perfect book for someone like him who needs something to do over the summer rather than watching dvr'ed basketball games!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Times
If you're a nerd who likes the NBA (like myself), then this is the book for you. Philosophical, esoteric and funny, the almanac has it all. With beautiful, original pictures, the Almanac muses on stars, scapegoats, basketball tragedies, and quirky peacocks in an altogether unique way.Casual fans may find it fun, but be prepared to think a little.Lots of fun. ... Product Description
In his more than twenty years coaching the Blue Devils, Coach Mike Krzyzewski has made his program the most admired in the nation, with back-to-back national championships in '91, '92, and again in 2001, and ten Final Four appearances since 1986. Now, in Leading with the Heart, Coach K talks about leadership-how you earn it, how you practice it, and how you use it to move your organization to the top. From the importance of trust, communication, and pride, to the commitment a leader must make to his team, this inspiring book is a must-read for anyone who loves college basketball-or who simply wants to win in any competitive environment today.Amazon.com Review
In some respects, a top-level college coach is a lot like amanager in any business. He has to turn a group of talentedindividuals into a smoothly running team, and he has to produceresults that please the fans of his team--the shareholders of theathletic program. Thus, in Leading with the Heart, Krzyzewskireviews the lessons he's learned as basketball coach at DukeUniversity, and tries to universalize them so they translate to anyleadership position. For example, he writes, "Adjustments are notunusual, they are usual. So a leader's ability to thinkon his feet ... to do things without instruction ... is of paramountimportance." Makes sense, as does this admonition: "When teaching, always remember this simple phrase: 'You hear, you forget. You see,you remember. You do, you understand.'"

The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season,""Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has fourchapters. Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules getin the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulletedtips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and thebullet points are anecdotes about Duke basketball games and(occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside basketball. What you comeaway with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great basketballcoach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyderare probably going to become great basketball coaches, and how anyonewho's currently a coach can become a better coach. It would be greatif other types of managers in other types of businesses couldincorporate these lessons in compassionate, focused, highly flexibleleadership, but it seems unlikely. Most managers in business risethrough the ranks not because of their ability to lead or inspire butbecause of their knowledge and competence (if not theirconnections). On the other hand, it would be nice if each of us, justonce, could work for someone like Coach K, someone who could push theright buttons and lead us to our own version of the Final Four. Notlikely, but a pretty sweet fantasy. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

This book is worth the time and effort.I would recommend this book to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars team leadership
This book gave insight into great leadership techniques whether you are leading a team or an office. The principles used for leading a team can be applied to most real life situations. I appreciated that the author used real life scenarios to illustrate his points and it wasn't just theory.

2-0 out of 5 stars cannot consider new
I purchased this book to give as a gift. It was described as new. When I received it it had a bend in the book and a big black marker across the top of the spine. I could no longer give this as a gift and had to go to a store to buy a good one. I would never purchase from this vendor unless you didn't care what it looks like !

3-0 out of 5 stars Leadership in the Experiences of Coaching Basketball
I attended Duke from 1987 to 1991. In all four basketball seasons, Coach Krzyzewski led the Duke Blue Devils Basketball team to four straight Final Fours. In 1991, Coach K and the Duke basketball team won the final game of the NCAA tournament and became National Champions. Duke basketball was very magical to me in those four years to say the least.

Coach Krzyzewski relates a lot of different ideas and practices to how to lead a team. He speaks of the team being like a fist where when all "fingers" or players are united they are stronger than when alone. He also talks about the way he focuses for a game. It is interesting that Coach K stated that he coached each team differently due to different characteristics of each team. He shows the ability to adapt to changing situations and to different crises that he details in the book. Another interesting idea is the trust and a feeling of family that bonds between coach and players. He shows this with events that occur on and off the basketball court. Another point Coach K makes is that he tells the reader that success should be determined internally in a team and not from an external source. Especially interesting and moving is when he speaks of his friendship with Coach Jim Valvano of NC State in the time that Coach Valvano was struggling with cancer. After finishing the book, it is easy to see why Coach K has such success in collegiate basketball. He is definitely a winner in many aspects. Coach Krzyzewski writes in a very simple and straightforward manner and gives ideas of leadership that should be standard in any successful organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coach K on Leadership, and Life
I have always found Coach K's Duke basketball teams to be good, disciplined, and well prepared. I respect Coach K for his teams' accomplishments, and for his demeanor on and off the court. I thought this book would be interesting, and a good learning experience for me. I was right on both accounts.

The book is written in an easy-to-read, almost conversational style. The material was presented and explained in a logical and organized way that made Coach K's points easy to understand. I definitely sensed that the book was written by a master coach, a master teacher. I found Coach K a lot more philosophical, intellectual, and psychologically-oriented than I ever imagined. The book was a very honest glimpse inside the head and heart of one of college basketball's most respected and successful coaches.

One of the most interesting things about this book is that it discussed many leadership situations not usually covered in other leadership books (e.g. academics, dealing with success, respect for authority, the links between individual and collective responsibility, nurturing and developing leaders at all levels, etc.).

Another aspect of the book that I liked was that it contained many examples of how Coach K learned from his own personal experiences and then taught those lessons to others: caring for his players (his `other family'), from his parents; the tradition of honoring seniors, from his college days at West Point; what it means to focus on and accomplish your mission/objectives, from his military service; dealing with defeat, setbacks, success, tragedies, adversity, and changing environments, from all throughout his coaching career. I was also impressed with how he constantly transforms his beliefs into actions for himself and others.

Coach K's book is a great, detailed look at leadership from someone who continues to successfully live and teach leadership on and off the basketball court.

5-0 out of 5 stars tremendous book!
My personal library contains four rows of technical basketball books collected over the years, but this recent one by Giorgio Gandolfi has a special place. I have already utilized several of the drills described in his book with my team and I was surprised at how effective they were, especially for my big men. I am excited by the prospect of a new drill a day for my team. The book has a good balance of position-drills, which makes it "one-stop" shopping in setting up my daily practice schedule. It's a good buy for any coach serious about taking their team to the next level. ... Read more

Product Description

Drain three pointers, slam dunk easily, and sink that buzzer beater from half court with the help of simple science. Your coach, physicist John J. Fontanella, shows how you can improve your game if you take advice from Isaac Newton. As you read, relive some of the great moments in the game -- this time with a scientist and diehard basketball fan as your color analyst.

Find out why you ought to put spin on the ball. Get tips on how to improve your free throw and increase your percentage from the charity stripe. You'll even learn how to shatter the backboard, if that's something you've always dreamed of doing. With photographs and simple high school formulas, physics professor Fontanella -- who played in college against Pittsburgh and Syracuse -- reveals the key pieces of physics that underscore basketball. He covers almost every aspect of the game, weaving in stories from games he's played and games he's seen, and tales from basketball history and folklore. Physics comes alive as you see how Kobe Bryant, Wilt "the Stilt" Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Becky Hammon, and J. J. Reddick do naturally the things that Isaac Newton says they should.

5-0 out of 5 stars understanding brings skill!
Would you like some extra motivation to learn the laws of physics?John Fontanella really does the trick for you, with his great analysis of the physics world in the game of basketball! He covers aspects of how to shoot the "soft shot" and how the ball has its best rotation before falling into the hoop.He also covers the aspect of the buoyant force acting on the ball. That was something that really struck my interest, as it is something that I've never really thought about.Reading from this book helped me to appreciate the game of basketball even more.I even feel like I may naturally perform a little better in the future due to the realization of how things work.It makes sense now how the basketball can seem to float more than a solid object in the air, because of the air that is inside it causing a buoyant force from the air to act upon it.
Not only are some of these aspects of the game of basketball taught on, but Fontanella even breaks down the mechanics of how one receives "hang time" when going to slam the ball.He broke down the calculations to where due to the acceleration of gravity, 71% of a person's horizontal travel happens in the top half of flight. Also, because when one throws his or her arms up in the air, there is an opposing force which seems to lower the person's vertical height. If this person will raise his or her arms once he or she barely pushes off the ground, this appearance of being lowered in the air will not really occur. When this individual throws his arms down, especially in attempt to throw the basketball through the hoop, his body will appear to "lift" even though he is currently in the air.Due to all of this, it will appear as if the athlete is truly floating or hanging in air.
I really enjoyed this book.I wish that I had read it earlier as it would have caused an appreciation for the reality of physics.Just as knowing the fundamentals of basketball provide one with essential skills, I feel that understanding the physics that go into this game also increases one's skill.Sure, I'm not a Micheal Jordan athlete yet, but I do know how to better appear as if I'm floating in the air now when I attempt to take the ball to the hoop. Once again, I appreciate physics, and especially this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
John Fontanella's The Physics of Basketball sheds some light on the physics principles governing the game of basketball. He carefully analyzes the flight and release of the basketball, the forces associated with launching the ball, the configuration of the rest of the body during the shot, and the interaction between the floor and shooter. The book opens with an explanation of the air drag, buoyant, and Magnus forces acting on a basketball.Fontanella describes how the Magnus force affects the curving path a ball takes and how this can allow for more effective long-distance passing to teammates. In the second chapter, he addresses the importance of angle of approach, approach speed, and the height at which the ball is above the hoop.Next he studies the contact forces that occur in the region where the hand touches the ball. The clarification of these forces allow for a better understanding of how the hand and wrist snapping motion affect spin, acceleration, and flight of the ball.Chapter three explores jump shots and the horizontal motion of the rest of the body and even provides some tips on how to shoot and "defeat the defender."Fontanella also investigates the importance of controlling the bounce of the ball and how the bounce plays a role in dribbling and bounce passes. He closes by discussing "hang time," how shoes are designed with consideration of static and kinetic frictions, and why the tempered glass of backboards shatter.
Although a beginner of both the sport and the study of physics, I found Fontanella's book fairly accessible and enjoyable. This text is the result of a number of experiments, observations, and video analyses--the mark of a good scientist. Also, the accompanying diagrams, charts, and pictures are useful in illustrating the book's concepts.I enjoyed the personal anecdotes and interesting statistics about players and games that were sprinkled throughout the book and appreciated the tips that he provided concerning technique. If I were a serious basketball player, I would definitely use this book as a resource in understanding basketball and how to improve my game.Fontanella is clearly passionate about this sport and obviously did his homework--four stars.

Book Review
The Physics of Basketball

This books name is the Physics of Basketball by John Joseph Fontanella. It was published by Johns Hopkins University Press. When first found and began reading this book, I was skeptical as to how accurate and how truly relative this would be to either basketball or to the principles of physics that I have learned this year. I was not sure if he would be very knowledgeable about basketball, and make his physics references very simple as to make it a children or teenagers book, or would it be very complicated application of physics and just a brief relation to basketball. I was however pleasantly surprised at how accurate and how basketball oriented it was! It was actually a fun read! I enjoyed to review the concepts that I have learned over the past semester in a format such as this because basketball is one of my favorite sports. He began with simpler concepts about momentum. He used references like Shaq and "Muggsy" Bouges. Shaq is over 7 feet and big, and Bouges is just over 5 feet and small.... Yeah there is a big difference since Shaq can actually get going pretty quick. Anyways, he then related momentum to other concepts in physics, and most all of the book, by the authors own statement, is related to the `shot' of the basketball into the hoop. Anyone who has played basketball knows that you cannot just throw directly at the rim and expect to get it in. You begin to `get a feel' for what must be done in order to get the ball to go into the hoop. I have known for a while that you must get it above the rim, coming down into it as soft as possible in order to get a `good shot' going. This is evidenced by the best shooters in the NBA and how even if they take an off balanced shot or some other crazy thing, the ball will often bounce around the rim and go in. This is called the `Shooters Touch'. I really enjoyed learning about a thing called Magnus Force, which is one component in this "Soft Shot" and also evidenced in the curving of a baseball. Overall, this author did an excellent job at explaining Physics in a fun, yet informative way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great understanding behind the physics of basketball
Fontanella breaks down the game of basketball in a way I have never seen before. I have played basketball my whole life, but he was able to put a spin on it that I really enjoyed. Just like the title states, he discussed the physics of basketball. He broke down specific aspects of basketball, and the role of physics in these aspects. My favorite part of the book was learning about how players make it look like they are floating when they dunk it. When you watch Jordan dunk it, it seems as though he is really floating through the air. Fontanella did a good job of explaining the physics behind what is really happening as athletes "float" through the air. It gave me a different understanding to the game that I didnt have before. It was interesting to read about the different forces and physics involved in the game.

Fontanella does a pretty good job of making the physics in the book understandable, but there are sections that don't really make sense to me. People that are interested in basketball and physics will like the book. I am a big fan of basketball, but physics is not my best subject. So I enjoyed the book from the basketball standpoint, but I wasn't as interested in the physics. He did a pretty good job of making it interesting though. You can tell that he understands both the fundamentals of basketball, and also physics. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in both physics and basketball. If you don't have much interest in one or the other, it may not be very appealing.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Physics of Basketball- For the light hearted reader
This book is exactly what it states it is. It is a book that looks at the physics of basketball. It includes what happens to the ball itself when it hits the basket or when it is spinning. It includes sections about what the angles that are best for a ball to go through a hoop, he analyzes foul shots and what speed they should be shot at, the appropriate angle and the best position for one after they have jumped or adjusted to the shot. He analyzes why taller players have a harder time shooting foul shots (using Shaquille O'neal as an example). But he shows how taller people can shoot well if they do the correct things (using Dirk Nowitski as an example). There is a section that covers the flight of a basketball and the forces and air resistance that act on the ball. We've all seen clips of players dunking a basketball and breaking the backboard. The author spends some time showing us the physics of what happens in these situations. He has a section that shows what spins are needed on a basketball when it hits the basket to give it the best opportunity to go in. My favorite section was at the very end when he talks about hang time. A lot of people think it is amazing that basketball players can jump really high, but it is interesting to see that they don't even spend one second in the air, even on the most amazing and acrobatic dunks (unless they hang to the rim of course).
John J. Fontanella is a great author for this book. He has spent most of his life and even played college basketball for Westminster College in Florida. This book is written by not only a physicist, but as someone who enjoys the game. It isn't a collection of complex formulas and hard physics, but physics that those with a little more than a basic understanding can comprehend. He also brings in many examples from athletes that we all know so that fans can enjoy the book as well. Some of these examples include Michael Jordan, Christian Laetner, Peja Stojakovic, Robert "Tractor" Traylor, and many others. Fontanella covers the basics of basketball including layups, jump shots, 3-pointers, and foul shots.
This book isn't written to someone who is wanting to learn the game of basketball, but rather to someone who understands the game and is trying to improve some aspects of it. One could take this book and see how they could improve their foul shooting. He uses appropriate graphics and tables to show the physics of what is done and has a great explanation of his results. I read this book for leisure and while I learned some stuff didn't find it difficult to continue reading.
For me the thought of sitting down and reading a book about physics isn't very exciting or a way that I would prefer to spend my time. Fontanella has written this book so that those of us who enjoy the game can sit down and understand some of the technical aspects a little more. With hidden humor and enough stories to keep us entertained it was fun light reading. Also at only 168 pages, it isn't too long or in depth that we put it down and give up before we ever get involved. I give this book a 4 star rating and was glad to see this aspect of basketball.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of several good resources
I liked this book. I see a two-star comment criticizing the book, in part, for the author reliving the good old days. Well, for me this was great background and color that breathes life into the X's and O's. These are not just war stories; it is a rich history, some of which may not be told anywhere else Yes, it may be light on strategy. I have not read the Dummies book -- in part because it is not available on Kindle. This book could have been better organized. For example, it should have listed all the positions, and describe what they do completely, in one place instead of scattering it across several places.

If you are serious about basketball you are not going to rely on one book. I think this book should be one of those.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the complete introduction to basketball
The author intends and succeeds to introduce basketball fans of all ages to the beauty of basketball.
No matter you are 12 or 70, this book helps you understand fully what the game is, teaches you about the history of the american basketball, gives you precious info about positions, different leagues, how to watch a game, famous players, network, newspapers and web sites.
It may be not an interesting book if you bought it for scrimmages and other technical info, but I don't think that was the purpose of the book. It's just a brilliant introduction to the basketball game.
Don't buy any other basketball book before reading this one "court to court". It pays you off.
I highly recommend it to basketball lover.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this Book
Buy Basketball for Dummies instead.
In search of a book which would get me up to speed about a sport which I had never played but which my sons have become increasingly passionate about, I bought and read both. You would be and idiot to buy The Complete Idiot's Guide to Basketball.
The author appears to be more preoccupied with telling you how wonderful he and the players of his (long bygone) era were. The references to today's players are painfully few. His snipping asides against the work ethic of today's players should have no space in a book of this sort; it serves only to make him sound whinny. His writing is practically devoid of humour and his descriptions of plays and strategies are fairly tedious. The game just does not come alive under his pen. Had I been an absolute newcommer to the sport when I read this book, I would have encouraged my boys to take up more exciting sports like synchronised swimming. FOrtunately, I had watched several live and taped games and had my children's interest to help me realise that there was much more to basketball than I could find in the pages of this book.
Try again Mr. Frazier

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
this book is a must for folks that respect the basics of Basketball.and who better to show&tell than one of the Greatest players of All-Time in Walt Clyde'Frazier.he was a great defensive player&scorer.also he knowsthat Wilt Chamberlin was the Greatest Player ever.he breaks everythingdown.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clyde covers the basics entertainingly and understandably.
Classy Clyde Frazier covers the fundamentals of basketball: the vocabulary, the role of each position, the basics of offense and defense, and a few common set plays. His writing is fun to read if a bitdumbed-down (hence the title). He draws examples largely from his playingdays, but knows well and comments aptly on players of all eras.He drawsthe distinctions between college and pro ball and includes women's and highschool ball, but properly focuses primarily on the NBA, where the game isplayed at its highest level. He shows you what to focus on when you watcha game and demonstrates how each player's skills come into play in thecourse of offense and defense. This book will enhance the novice'sappreciation for and enjoyment of the game; from what I have read of DiggerPhelps' "Basketball for Dummies," I'm glad I read Clyde's bookinstead. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed
In the beginning, I was an avid E. Lynn Harris fan and reader. However, after perhaps his first four novels I have seen a definite decline in the writing.Initially his style of writing and presentation was very upstanding and pristine. It seems that with his last 3-4 books the style became more plebian and written on a lower mental level. It's as if he went from writing for The New York Times to writing for a local newspaper.
I am quite dissapointed with his last works but will cherish his earlier writings and maintain them in my library. After reading the reviews of the latter books that I have not purchased I will not be making any more purchases of his novels, especially since it has been intimated that he may not have even completed some of the writings.I have also read reviews regarding typos. This is not the E. Lynn Harris who had me anxiously awaiting his next novel. I guess you can't be number 1 forever!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read
I read this book in a total of 7 hours if that! I felt like the book was kind of predictable but it was still a page turner. Kind of obvious since I did not want to go to sleep until I finished it. Great characters, good story and very heart felt. This is the E Lynn of old, loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ
It was the first time I ever read a novel about bisexual men and men who was on the downlow. I really enjoyed the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars So real....
This book is very spicy and keeps you interested without even having to do like some other gay writings.Other gay books have to get deep into detail about sexual encounters to keep you interested, which I don't mind, but not this book.I would recommend this reading to all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic E.Lynn
Basketball is a story about sex, love, living on the down low, blackmail, sports. While these topics are common to lots of Harris' books, the way his stories are told you don't tire of hearing about them again.I particularly liked him bringing the story to The Crescent City (I'm a native). It made the story much easier to visualize especially since I was familiar with lots of the places. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great information from lots of great coaches!
Jerry Krause and Ralph Pim have done basketball coaches a great service by collecting and editing all of the articles assembled into this single edition. The list of authors reads like a who's who of basketball coaches.

The articles are arranged by topic and cover just about every area of coaching basketball imaginable. The diagrams used to depict the concepts are well done and easy, for me at least, to understand.

The only complaint I have with the book is that the coaches whose articles are included are never really able to show how that one aspect of their system completely fits into the bigger picture or to go into a really in depth, detailed explanation of the topic. Given the nature of the book, I am not sure how to get around this limitation.

Still, a valuable tool for any basketball coach and worth buying.

Kevin Sivils - author of Game Strategy and Tactics for Basketball

3-0 out of 5 stars Some great articles that skim the Surface
This book has great articles from some of the best coaches ever such as Wooden, Dean Smith, Henry Iba, and Morgan Wooten, but never gets too in depth.Great book for a coach looking for ideas here and there, but not great if look for real specifics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece by Jerry Krause.
I love teaching and coaching basketball. I also love reading and learning more about the game. Most of my reviews are 5 star and thats because I do my homework when purchaseing a new book. This book would be a 5 star plus if possible.A good book for reading but always a great source of reference. Contains every aspect of basketball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Basketball by Jerry Krause
Jerry Krause has put together a great coaching book with articlescontributed by the greatest coaches in the game, covering all aspects ofthe game.A "must have" for any coach or player seeking a higherlevel of knowledge of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best coaches book
This book covers it all. From developing your coaching philosophy to Junk Defenses. I have used it to teach 15 year olds a full court press to 9 year olds the basics of footwork. I have over 15 books on basketball, yet thisone never seems to make it back onto the shelf.

This and the 5-starbasketball drill book are the only two books you will ever need as a coach! ... Read more
