Outlandish, but really good....

The Final Edition of the Bandy Papers
This is the last in a series of books that has taken our hero Bartholomew Bandy from the horrors of World War One trench warfare to the skies over England during the Battle of Britain. This last volume was published a couple of years after the death of author Donald Jack and to be honest, while the editors have done a good job in combining two early drafts into one book, there is no doubt in my mind that the finished product falls a little short of Donald Jack's usual high standards. Visions of superstars dance in my head
A few short essays. The same stills over and over.

But the essays are superb. Klaus Biesenbach sums the scene up, brings it to life, in just 4 pages.

The stills have become captivating in a month of viewing. Two hundred pages of them, effective black-and-white. How hard to stay still for 3 minutes. What's more erotic than Jane Holzer brushing her teeth?

The magic of Warhol is expertly conveyed. Here probably more than in the "Pop Box", the "Time Capsule 21", even the "365 Takes".

I haven't seen a Warhol film (or screen test) yet but this is the book that makes me want to. Do you have to be a Warhol fan already? Until you've seen something like this of the movies, you may not have actually been a Warhol fan. Hearing about the movies isn't enough. The silkscreens tend to be cold but there's lots of heat in these shots. In just these minimalist stills from minimallist movies, so much shows. Hysterical, cynical and thoughtful.
The Bandy papers are a well constructed, well researched and thouroughly enjoyably series of books, which highlight not only the folly of war in general, but the absolute insanity of the first world war. While the books leave you chortling and giggling, they also fill you with a sense of horror that such things could take place in the name of western civilization, and if history is written by the victors, General Haig was damn lucky the allies won, because these books alone prove a case for war crimes of an immense scale. The whole ridiculous nature of upper class British society is lampooned mercilessly, and the motives, morals and values of the allies is questioned and found wanting. I would recommend these books to anyone - they are timeless and should be read over and over again.

Terrorising
Ah! "Bandy Bandyensis"! A nightmare to his superiors, parents and other riff and beloved by his totally bemused compadres - male and female. All while cruising through life with an obliviousnous to his effect upon others that is positively breathtaking. Until that is, he meets his match: a monstrosity of English Plumbing which leaves him a complete wreck after one of the most side-splitting description's of the aformentioned device's operational facilities - or lack thereof - I've ever read that left me in tears of laughter and my ribs aching viciously - quite viciously!. Not to be outdone however, our hero despatches most of his superiors to the padded cell blubbering for mercy or a much needed avenue of escape - generally from Bandy's voice. Something guaranteed to eviscerate anyone's aural facilities at 100 paces with no little difficulty! Then there's "backsliding"......Get the entire Bandy series and plenty of rib-strapping tape. You're going to need it!

Bandying with Bandy
I first read this book nearly 25 years ago. I recently re-read it after discovering it in my attic, and found that not only had it lost non of its charm in the intervening years, but in fact had matured into something that I could savour with pleasure over a glass of wine. If Biggles was crossed with Blackadders Baldrick, then this would be the result. A sensitive yet humourous rendering of life in the trenches and in the pioneering days of aerial warfare that isn't too heavy going. This is a classic waiting in the wings. ... Read more

Delicous
I have had this book before and I loved it then and I love it even more then ever! I have cooked alot of the recipes in this book and they are awesome I would recommand this book for any cook and for any Elvis fan! LOVE IT

This Elvis Cookbook Rocks!
I bought this cookbook for myself, since I am such a big Elvis fan. It has lots of recipes, including the famous fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, which I can't wait to try. Most of the recipes in this book are Southern.

It also has a lot of pictures of Elvis with fans, his parents, etc. And information about what kinds of food he liked to eat, his generosity to his family and friends, and his love of Graceland. He is a legend that will always be remembered. I think that he would be proud to share his love of Southern cuisine, and his love of food in general. If you want to eat like the King of Rock n Roll, or you just love Elvis Presley, then I recommend this book.

Sorry excuse for a cookbook
This book is a perfect example of everyone and their Mama availing themselves of the easy opportunity to make some mega bucks off the death of Elvis. It's only worth would be to a die-hard Elvis fan, and then only for the photos of Elvis. Most of those in the book have been printed elsewhere by now, however, so even that is subjective. As for being useful as a recipe or cookbook, it's the worst I've ever owned and will go into my yard sale or donation pile. The recipes don't seem as if anyone actually tried them, and if Elvis did eat them, no wonder he died. Not only from the grease in all the food ( one recipe even called for pouring grease into a frying pan in order to fry FAT BACK or salt pork!! )but probably to get away from eating all those poorly made dishes.

I felt the authors made up many of the recipes, as I know no one here in the south who makes banana pudding without using any vanilla wafers!! The book was also quite silly, as who needs a definition key in the back to explain to them the meaning of "chill" or "roast" or "mince" or even "STIR"???!!! The few recipes that did seem to sound a little believable, were mostly ones I've seen in common recipe books for the last 40 years. The author seemed to be grasping for recipes to include, as who needs a recipe for French Toast that is nothing but milk, egg, and white loaf bread??? Everything else was slop, not just due to Elvis and his family's supposed love of lard, white bread, and gelatin, but because the recipes are all poorly conceived. The whole book, in fact, came off as an insult to Elvis, to Southerners, and most of all just a waste of good paper.

FIT FOR A KING is my favorite of all my "Elvis" books. This book is overflowing with recipes, photos, inside information and wonderful, sweet memories. FIT FOR A KING was put together with thoughtfulness and sincerity. So many of the other books about Elvis are just an excuse to use his name and image. If you like music, food, nostalgia, and most of all, Elvis himself, then you will truly appreciate FIT FOR A KING.
