Product Description

When Marcia married Jesse Martin and moved to a pond front home in a private setting, it was, for the nature lovers, a dream come true. The yard was replete with wildlife.Foxes, deer, coyotes, racoons and waterfowl were frequent visitors, but it was one Canada Goose that Marcia set her affection on, and he likewise seemed to 'adopt' her.

Bandy is the true story of a unique relationship between a woman and a wildling, who, by some unfortunate tragedy, loses his right foot and part of his leg. His lifetime mate, Bindy, decides he's only half a goose and takes up with his best friend, a goose who was banded with him on the same day ten years prior.Bandy, though social by nature, becomes a loner by fate. Then, as if he hasn't suffered enough, he has a run-in with monofilament fishing line that almost costs him his life. After a month in rehab, he is returned to Griffith's Pond, only to disappear with the rest of the geese after eight days.Though it is his normal departure time at the end of the summer molt, Marcia has mixed feelings about his disappearance. She's pleased he feels like a part of his gaggle, but she's climbing the walls worrying about his welfare. After all, she hadn't even seen him fly yet.

There is an element of the supernatural in this true story, from Marcia's premonition about Bandy's brush with death, to the amazing answer to her prayer to find him two months after he's left.It will be difficult to doubt the power of prayer and the reaches of Divine care after reading Bandy.Encountering this little survivor will bring you encouragement in a troubled world, and perhaps you will be able to face your own set of circumstances with renewed hope.It is a must-read for every nature lover and anyone who has problems; I guess that includes us all. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for all
An awesome tale of a Canada goose who fights through major injury in not very easy circumstances.A great bond is formed between animal and human, with trust as the cornerstone of the relationship.A perfect title, as this goose possesses courage that mamy humans can only dream about.Long live Bandy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bandy as an intelligent creature
Bandy is a heart warming true story of a goose's relationship with a human and her love for him. People need to read this sort of book before calling hunters in to rid the golf courses of these "nuisance birds".

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love animals
If you love animals then you will be able to relate to the passion the author has for Bandy. The photo of Bandy's steps in the snow was a good to see. I live on a small lake and the geese migrate through our area. One of my neighbors feeds the geese.I bought the book as a Christmas gift for her and I also read the book.As you read, just know that the story does not end on a sad note.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book about Geese
I found this book to be easy and likable reading. If you enjoy stories of animal this will be good book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all animal and nature lovers
Bandy was one of many wild canada geese visting Marcia's pond - and yet he was special and brave and drew her attention.Since he wore a band she was able to identify him and enjoy his repeat visits.Unfortunately, Bandy became injured which caused him to lose status with the geese - however, the bond between Bandy and Marcia strengthened and this story is very much about their special relationship. It is easy to feel the love that Marcia has for Bandy and to find oneself rooting hard for Bandy.

If you enjoy stories about special animals, this book is for you.I was originally nervous to read it, thinking it may be too sad for me.But while it is, of course, sad that Bandy was injured, the book doesn't stop there or even dwell on this.Rather the story continues with Bandy's courage, intelligence, and special friendship with Marcia.I read the book in just a couple of hours and then ordered another copy to give as a gift.It is the kind of story you want to share. ... Product Description
"Growing Spiritual Redwoods" is an effort to help church leaders answer the kinds of questions that confront congregations and Christians in this era of rapid and uncertain change. William M. Easum and Thomas Bandy argue that the congregations to whom the term "spiritual redwoods" can be applied are grown slowly, becoming vigorous centers of witness and mission.Amazon.com Review
Authors William Easum and Thomas Bandy argue that there are two types of churches in existence today--those that are perishing and those that are thriving. Growing Spiritual Redwoods pinpoints methods that sustain church growth and reveals how the archaic implementation of "dogma, doctrine, and historical knowledge" robs some churches from ministering to its members. According to the authors, putting aside "decision-makers" for "disciple-makers," church work for personal fulfillment, and hierarchy for organism are a few of the facets of change that will alter the leadership, worship, and methodology of any church, lending itself to further growth, evangelism, and outreach. While the authors are leading a growing trend of unconventional ways to church God's people, it is beneficial to remember that specific methodology is not necessarily capable of producing success--God's word has the capacity to change people no matter what the human motivation or program might be. Although Growing Spiritual Redwoods can seem like a business plan for church life, Easum and Bandy give substantial documentation and practical application for what works to make a strong 21st-century church. --Jill Heatherly ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Growing Spiritual Redwoods
A very difficult read, but it directs the reader to a new world of the church that must be considered to continue to attract and sustain future generations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Are You Experienced?

North Americans do not understand Christian doctrine and they do not want to understand it.So say authors Easum and Bandy who then continue: "but most important - and this is the key discovery at the end of the 20th Century - they do not need to understand it!"(p. 41).What they need, instead of doctrine, is a life-transforming "experience with Jesus" and "relationship with Jesus".(pp. 49, 52, 53, 55, et seq.).

Who is this Relationship Jesus? The authors are not sure who he is, but they know who he is not.He is not Lord, or Messiah, or King, or Son of God, or even Savior because such titles "have become so laden with underlying nuances that seekers are too nervous to consider them."(p. 39.)And what of "Christ"?Easum and Bandy say that term "carries an enormous weight of complex dogma, and invites seekers into an arena of religious disagreement ... that is (to them) frightening in its irrelevance."(p. 39.)Under no circumstances must doctrine be allowed to frighten or unnerve the seekers as they experience Relationship Jesus.Seekers must be free to imagine this Jesus in any way they wish. The authors tell us that no less an authority than the Council of Chalcedon "resolved conflict about the person and work of Jesus by declaring that every perspective was both right and wrong."(p. 52.)Relationship Jesus is everything you want him to be and, apparently, he is also not everything you want him to be.Go figure.

There is one point of doctrine the authors tolerate and that is the Incarnation. But dogma-fearing North Americans need not fret, as the authors quickly assure them that:"Only the mysterious paradox of the incarnation is essential to Christian faith. All else is metaphor."(p.54.)That "all else" of non-essential metaphor would include, by the way, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.

This book thrives on the false dichotomy of "either doctrine or experience."Time and again the authors dismiss doctrine as an impediment to experience as shown in such statements as "Are you committed to Jesus Christ ... or to a particular doctrine" and "Do you speak of faith as an experience with Christ or as a heritage to protect" and "Understanding the saving grace of God in a rationally consistent, historically grounded way is not important to most Americans; Experiencing that saving grace ... is everything."(pp. 14, 41.)

Could it be that one can hold fast to that doctrine first delivered by the Apostles and still experience the Lord Jesus Christ? And by the "Lord Jesus Christ" I do not mean the amorphous, metaphorical, mystical Jesus of Easum and Bandy who is all things to all men, be they right or wrong.I mean the man who was born of a virgin, crucified under Pontius Pilate, suffered, died and was buried, rose again in accordance with the Scriptures and ascended into heaven. That Jesus! The same Apostles who delivered the doctrine also experienced that Jesus.Paul, who warned the Galatians to not receive any other gospel than the one he preached, also prayed that the Ephesians would be inwardly enlightened so as to comprehend "what is the breadth and width and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up with all the fullness of God."(Eph. 3:18-19.)Now that is an experience!

So doctrine and experience are not mutually exclusive. The real question is whether they are mutually dependent. That is, can someone experience Jesus, the real and true Jesus, without embracing sound Christian doctrine.Just as there is true doctrine and a true Jesus who can be experienced, there is also false doctrine and, the Lord warned, a false Jesus that can be experienced.Because Easum and Bandy reject sound doctrine and even reason itself, they have no ability to discern the true from the false.

Now, I know the postmoderns out there will shake their heads and say, "The poor boy just doesn't get it.Hasn't he heard? There are no absolutes, there are no meta-narratives, there are no universal truths. There is no true Jesus, there is no false Jesus. There is just 'Jesus', and those Chalcedons had it right, all perceptions of Jesus (and of everything else) are both right and wrong."Well, if the postmoderns are right, then their "Jesus" is nothing more than a contentless banner, to use Francis Schaeffer's phrase. It is just a label used to generate interest in an undefinable "experience."They could call it anything: Jesus or Buddha or Krishna or Mithra or Mothra or whatever. It doesn't matter. And they may actually have an experience, but ultimately their experience will not matter either because it is just as contentless as the label they put on it.The secular philosophers came to this dead-end conclusion long ago.The church philosophers like Easum and Bandy are lagging behind. But they will get there eventually. Its just a matter of time.

There is no meaning and there is no hope in Relationship Jesus, or in the experiences he might bestow. But there is meaning and hope in the true Jesus, a "living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." (1 Pet. 1:3.)May you experience this Jesus soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Forest
Bandy's work is always thought provoking, and this book is, too.He offers a pretty accurate assessment of the problems of current church "life."However, I am not as certain that his answers are the "answer."But worth reading and pondering. His vision of the future church is certainly radically different than most of us envision.

2-0 out of 5 stars Challenge without answers
Easum and Bandy make excellent points regarding the difficulties of traditional churches.Who can argue with the reality of decline; the substitution for institutional maintenance for evangelism?Unfortunately their response to the challenge is gimmicky and shallow. For example, they envision "worship" consisting of chats with a holographic Jesus and Mary on the challenges of family life.Is such a retreat into entertainment the only way to reach today's generation? Is it even possible for such entertainment to be authentic worship, or have we settled for a Disneyland version of reality? The authors don't consider such questions, nor do they address the question of resources, envisioning the megachurch, with its wealth, to be the only option for the future.Current trends indicate the future is not quite so monolithic. There are other books tackling these issues with far more practical advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Redwoods" is a little scary but very thought provoking!
I picked up "Growing Spiritual Redwoods" not long after reading Bill Easum's "...Gourmet Burgers".Bandy and Easum continue his analysis of the problems dragging down "traditional" churches as they encounter the new century.Bandy adds a "nuts and bolts" element that was missing in "Burgers".Traditional churches have let spirituality slip while they pursue better ways of doing church work on a corporate model. The authors want us to return the focus of the church to worship and specifically "indigenous worship"... matching worship style to the community-especially the unchurched community. Many churches are surrounded by spiritual searchers who feel alienated by the "old-fashioned" music and liturgies of traditional worship. Some of their suggestions for styles and environments are hard for me to swallow, but they do encourage thoughtful consideration of how our worship styles have become as dated as knickers.I am not sure that the overwhelming sensual assault of much of modern culture is absolutely necessary to relate to the Under-30 crowd, but I can see where it could provide a way to communicate the transformative power of Jesus to the MTV generation. Beyond worship, they advocate building strong, spiritual individuals to replace the ineffective and energy wasting committee structures of the past.Church leaders become coachs, inspiring rather than directing each individual's ministry.Teams of desciples coalescing around natural leaders who share their vision will do the work of Jesus, rather than the work of the church. This is not a book of instructions, but it does point out the elements necessary to make the kind of transformation they feel is required for the survival of the larger church in the post-Christendom, pre-Christian era.Even if you disagree with the methods that Bandy and Easum suggest, this book will stimulate serious thought and conversation with others in your church community about how we do the work of our Lord. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "BANDY," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have BANDY in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with BANDY when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name BANDY, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly good.
One of the most brilliantly funny series of books ever written came to its original conclusion with this title. Although Donald Jack has subsequently produced later works on Bandy's further adventures, these seem as something of a revisionist afterthought, albeit equally well crafted as the first 4 in the original series. Me Among The Ruins, later incorporated as a section into the larger 4th book of the expanded series, manages to be both as laugh-out-loud funny as the earlier 3 books and also at times strikingly poignant with Kathryn's untimely death and Bandy's final reunion with his family in Canada. Donald Jack creates an interesting juxtaposition of hilarity and sadness that gives the whole sequence of the first 4 books a sense of being a farcical tragedy in which essentially only Bandy himself is left standing undefeated by the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flashman fans will find this a delightful experience!!
The gent from Worksop has it right. This is a bit of a summation with the bitter sorrow of Kathryn's death a true disappointment to readers of the previous books in the series. Otherwise holds true to the high standard of ridiculous-ness established in the other books of the series. Historicalfiction fans of everyone from George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman to RowanAtkinson's Blackadder will find this series a Hoot!.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book from Donald Jack.
Bandy, sent home to Canada to boost the war effort disgraces himself with the aplomb of an innocent in town - but restores his honour with a successful campaign in Russia. Two things only spoilt this book for me. Thesad death of Bandy's wife, Kathryn, and the feeling the author was'tidying-up' in order to bring the series to a close, ending as it did withBandy once more at home in the bosom of his family. The fact more booksappeared in the series proved a great relief on the one hand, but an almostimpossible task in tracing copies(within the U.K) on the other. Despitethis these books represent the most enjoyable reading I have ever had. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reconnect Mission and Worship
"The Uncommon Lectionary" guides pastors toward worship that is both outsider-oriented AND inclusive of growing disciples of Jesus Christ.

Tom Bandy persuasively articulates the limitations of the Revised Common Lectionary (i.e. the Scripture readings prescribed to churches based on the Christian Calendar). In short, the RCL assumes the siignificant Christian maturity of worshipers.Churches simply can't afford that erroneous assumption.

Bandy describes two "uncommon" lectionary's instead. The first is a Seeker Cycle lectionary which both covers the most important Bible stories and gives a sense of the overarching story of the Bible. This cycle is obviously meant for those new to or exploring Christian faith.

The second lectionary is the Disciple Cycle. This cycle explores other important Bible stories while more strongly emphasizing five major thematic movements in the Bible's salvation story. This cycle is designed for worshipers ready to move beyond their initial Christian commitment toward Christian maturity AND church leadership.

Bandy clearly describes the purpose of each cycle and how to implement them, respectively. He challenges pastors to release the creative gifts in the congregation in designing each service around that week's text and theme. But the real challenge is to allow those worship designers to convey that biblical theme in language, symbols, and music that reflects that local churches local culture.

"The Uncommon Lectionary" should be helpful to pastors and church leaders exploring the intersection of outreach, discipleship, and worship in their local church.Bandy certainly pushes the reader to ask WHY - why does your worship look the way it does? What's it doing? What is your church trying to accomplish?Who are you communicating to?

Though Bandy admits his cycles are completely customizable to local contexts, they are very labor intensive for church leaders. That's not a disclaimer but it should be taken into account. No one should implement these cycles without committed church leaders.

Bandy does not, unfortunately, address preaching with series. This seems to be an effective preaching tool for many pastors in growing churches (cf. Adam Hamilton of Church of the Resurrection or Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg UMC).It's possible that he assumes his target audience - who I assume to be Mainline pastors - don't use series in the first place. This is increasingly less true in my observation.Despite this obvious oversight, The Uncommon Lectionary is worth reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, It's him again
I have remembered this series since I read it many years ago. What I didn't know was how deeply it had sunk into my being.I have re-read the first three books and am amazed at how much of Bandy I see in myself. As the main character, Bartholomew Bandy, developed and grew, he learned many lessons about life, living, and social interaction. It is only now, after many years, that I realize I have taken to heart many of the lessons Bandy learned. This was and still is a very funny story and I am forever grateful to its author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
I first read "Three Cheers For Me" and the next two volumes back in the seventies. And I have yet to find another author with the wit and humor of Donald Jack. This book is set in World War One but is so funnythat anyone who is not a war buff would truely enjoy reading it.I foundmyself days later cracking up over the antics of our hero leaving everyoneto wonder what was so funny and if I had lost my mind. I had beensearching for this book for sometime without success, but then discoveredAmazon.com.And thank god, I was able to with their help to find thistreasure of a book and add it to my collection. I recommend this book foranyone who would love to sit down and laugh for hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much under-rated work of classic humour - not to be missed
I was fortunate enough to by volumes 1 to 3 in the early seventies (paperback), and have read them again and again. The character Bartholomew Bandy was a masterful creation and I have despaired many times over theunavailability of these books - particular as my copies are now showingtheir age. How I wish the series would be reprinted in the U.K. - and givenfull media coverage. The series began, I believe, as a radio series inCanada - now probably lost in the mists of time. Donald Jacks is a comicgenius, and his creation will live with me forever. 'Three Cheers forDonald Jack'...

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, touching and memorable
I found this book as a used book in Canada and have searched for additional titles by Donald Jack for years. If any book series should be brought back, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - well written humour
I was given this book about 20 years ago. I found it to be incredibly funny - the kind of humour that would make you laugh out loud ages after having put the book down. This will sometimes cause you embarrassment inpublic places and give rise to "where has he escaped from" looksfrom surrounding people. Read this book!! ... Read more
