Excerpt: Results and statistics for the Australian Football League season of 1991. See List of Australian Football League premiers for a complete list. Hawthorn defeated North Melbourne 14.19 (103) to 7.12 (54). (For an explanation of scoring see Australian rules football). Due to the addition of the Adelaide Crows, the number of teams in the competition was uneven. Therefore each team had 2 byes for the season; 7 teams had a bye in Round 1, and then each preceding week 1 team had a bye. In total each team would play 22 games for the season. All teams played 22 games during the home and away season, for a total of 165. An additional 7 games were played during the finals series. A team based in the state of South Australia, christened the "Adelaide Crows" after the epithet bestowed upon those from South Australia by those living in other Australian states (viz., the "crow eaters" ) was admitted to the AFL competition in 1991. Total match attendance for the home-and-away season was 3,810,868 people. Total attendance for the finals series was 381,707 people. Attendance at the Grand Final was 75,230 people. The largest non-finals attendance was 55,735 people for the Melbourne v Collingwood game of Round 6. ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5479338 ... Read more

Excerpt: Results and statistics for the Victorian Football League season of 1974. In 1974, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances. Teams played each other in a home-and-away season of 22 rounds; matches 12 to 22 were the "home-and-way reverse" of matches 1 to 11. Once the 22 round home-and-away season had finished, the 1974 VFL Premiers were determined by the specific format and conventions of the "McIntyre Final Five system". Richmond defeated North Melbourne 18.20 (128) to 13.9 (87), in front of a crowd of 113839 people. Product Description
A drop kick is a type of kick in various codes of football. It involves a player dropping the ball and then kicking it when it bounces off the ground. It contrasts to a punt, wherein the player kicks the ball without letting it hit the ground first. Drop kicks are used as a method of restarting play and scoring points in rugby union and rugby league. They can also be used in gridiron football codes and Australian rules football, though this is now rare. One version of a drop kick exists in association football, where it is sometimes used by the goalkeeper to perform a long-range clearance after receiving possession of the ball from open play. The goalkeeper drops the ball so that it bounces, after which point he kicks the ball in midair. ... Read more

Excerpt: Australian rules football, also known as Australian football and known colloquially as Aussie rules, was first organised in Victoria in 1859 when its first rules were written by the Melbourne Football Club. By 1900, it had become the most popular sport in Victoria. Tom WillsThe complex origins of the game go back to the early 1840s and are covered in The Origins of Australian rules football On 17 May 1859, the first rules for a local code of football were written during a meeting of four members of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC): Tom Wills, William Hammersley, J.B. Thompson and Thomas Smith. The meeting was held at the Parade Hotel on the site of the present MCG Hotel. Wills, a renowned cricketer, was secretary of the MCC at the time. He had attended Rugby School and was familiar with the argument between the proponents of allowing players to handle the ball (ie, Rugby football) and those who wanted players to use their feet only, the style later adopted by the Football Association. Below are the rules for Australian Rules Football, alleged to have been used by the Geelong Football Club in 1859. They were originally written down by hand. Graeme Atkinson, writing in Everything You Wanted Know About Australian Rules Football ... considers it likely that these Geelong rules were drawn up prior to the first rules of the Melbourne Football Club which were drafted on 17 May 1859.: 1. Excerpt: Australian rules football matches between teams representing Australian colonies/states and territories have been held since 1879. For most of the 20th century, the absence of a national club competition and international matches meant that football games between state representative teams were regarded with great importance. Football historian John Devaney has argued that: "some of the state of origin contests which took place during the 1980s constituted arguably the finest expositions of the game ever seen." Until 1976, interstate Australian rules football games were played by teams representing the major football leagues or organisations. From 1977 to 1999, players were generally selected under State of Origin selection rules and they were chosen mostly from the Australian Football League (AFL). Since 2000, all matches have been between teams representing the second-tier state or territorial leagues. Players from the AFL no longer take part in interstate matches. The matches have mostly been held on a stand-alone basis. However, an Australian Football Carnival, a national championship series, held in either one or two cities, took place between 1908 and 1993, usually at three year intervals. Teams which have taken part have included a combined Australian Amateurs team, Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales (NSW), NSW-ACT, New Zealand (NZ; 1908 carnival only), Northern Territory, Queensland (Qld), Qld-NT, South Australia (SA), Tasmania (Tas), Victoria (Vic), the Victorian Football League (VFL), the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and Western Australia (WA). Although the Protectionists were able to retain their minority government with the qualified support of the Labour Party, the equal numbers would see a record three changes of government over the course of the Parliamentary term, with each of the three parties holding office at least once during the term of the Parliament. The three parties that contested the 1901 election also contested the 1903 election, with only the Protectionists changing leaders to Alfred Deakin as a result of Edmund Barton 's appointment as an inaugural judge of the newly constituted High Court o... ... Excerpt: Results and statistics for the Victorian Football League season of 1924. In 1924, the VFL competition consisted of nine teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match. Each team played each other twice in a home-and-away season of 18 rounds (i.e., 16 matches and 2 byes). Once the 18 round home-and-away season had finished, the 1924 VFL Premiers were determined by the specific format and conventions of the 1897 round-robin format which the VFL had experimentally reinstated for the 1924 season alone. In 1924, there was no "Grand Final" match, because the VFL experimented with the reinstatement of the round-robin format it had used in its inaugural 1897 season to determine the premiership. The format did not live up to expectations, and the VFL reverted to the "amended Argus system" format for the 1925 season. Essendon finished on top of the ladder at the conclusion of the round-robin final series on the basis of its greater percentage; and, as a consequence, Essendon was awarded the 1924 premiership. The experiment with the 1897 round-robin format, with no "Grand Final", also meant that there were no "Grand Final" teams in 1924;) instead there was an "Essendon Finals Squad", a "Fitzroy Finals Squad", a "Richmond Finals Squad", and a "South Melbourne Finals Squad". The night series were held under the floodlights at Lake Oval, South Melbourne, for the teams (5th to 12th on ladder) out of the finals at the end of the season.
