Product Description

This volume, that Jack Pardee terms "a dissertation on six-man football," is not only the definitive rule book for the sport, but includes a thorough sixty-five-year history of Texas six-man competition, the teams that have played, and the coaches who have developed and led them. Because of the continual sprinting, dodging, and aggressive contact demanded in every one of the forty minutes of play, six-man games are won on conditioning. For this reason, the book includes a chapter titled "Getting the Team Ready Physically." Strategies for offense and defense are detailed, including the O'Brien Wing Set and the O'Brien Veer, with input, also, for specialty teams. The playbook of over 250 offensive plays from various Texas six-man offensive formations will prove useful to those who compete in the game of six-man football.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is extremly helpful and provided me with valuable information. As a first time 6 man coach, this book is invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six-Man Football
This book by C H Underwood covered the game, A-Z. It would be very useful to a coach or those still playing the game. What it lacks is the influence and thrills it gave to those playing the game. I will be sharing these chapters in my forthcoming book called I Played Too. This will tell the stories of oldtime players who still love the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only reference on 6-man football you will ever need
Coach Underwood has produced the definitive text on six-man football, an absolute necessity for prospective coaches.Even if you have years of experience coaching traditional 11-man football, you need this book.

Under Coach Underwood's careful editorship, "Six-Man Football" covers every base that a fledgling coach needs to master this version.Coach Underwood writes about his own legendary O'Brien Veer offense, then provides seven other offensive systems to choose from in articles written by other legends of Texas six-man football coaching.

This is followed by three chapters on defensive systems, and a chapter each on special teams play and on program building, preparation and conditioning. All in all, this is an entire library on six-man football condensed into one volume.Do not try to coach this unique form of America's game without buying this book!

Highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid guide to a variation of football especially popular in rural Texas
Written by a former high school football quarterback and subsequent football coach of six Texas high schools, Six- Man Football is a solid guide to a variation of football especially popular in rural Texas. Chapters discuss the history of six-man football, offensive strategies as contributed by a variety of different coaches, defensive strategies, how to get one's team physically ready, and six-man football in locations beyond Texas boarders including Colorado, Saskatchewan, New Mexico, Montana, and Nebraska. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams that illustrate football plays add a clear visual touch to this practical, down-to-earth strategy and instruction manual, highly recommended for school and private athletic programs that adopt this disciplined and focused version of a traditional American sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tailgate bible
Great sized book for taking to the game. Not as bulky as a standard cookbook.I like eating way more than watching football, so the parking lot parties are perfect for me!These are easy to shop for, easy to make, and easy to transport recipes. And who would expect breakfast foods in this book? What a nice surprise because we sometimes have out-of-town guests and need a quick and easy meal in the morning.I like that the authors throw in a little history of the game inbetween chapters, and there's a very handy meal planner in the back. You have to try the Fish Tacos. My husband and college kids LOVE them.

Product Description
At the age of 8, Chad Gibbs attended his first Southeastern Conference football game.Since then he has been in a constant battle to not let his love of all things pigskin consume him.As a Christian, Gibbs knows he cannot serve two masters, but at times his faith is overwhelmed by his fanaticism. He is not alone. In 2008 over six million people attended an SEC football game. They spend thousands on season tickets, donate millions to athletic departments, and for three months a year order their entire lives around the schedule of their favorite team. Gibbs and his six million friends do not live in a spiritually void land where such borderline idol worship would normally be accepted. They live in the American South, where according to the 2008 American Religious Identification Survey, 84 percent identify themselves as Christians. This apparent contradiction that Gibbs sees in his own life, and in millions of others, has led him to journey to each of the twelve schools to spend time with rabid, Christian fans of various ages and denominations.Through his journey he hopes to learn how others are able to balance their passion for their team with their devotion to God.And if Gibbs learns others are just as messed up as he is, at least he will know he is not alone. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Man is this bad
What a disgrace to the country's finest football conference.Ernsberger may as well be cheeseburger...Calling Kevin Faulk "Marshall" doesn't give this book much credibility.Besides, it reads like a TN alum wrote it.If you're into the SEC like I am try "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football".It's a good read on the entire SEC.Again, Ernsbeger should be drawn and quartered for this sacrilege.Go Gamecocks!

1-0 out of 5 stars An EMBARRASSING attempt
Ernsberger might as well have written about women's volleyball in the SEC since he's got at the very least 10 factual errors that I uncovered.Calling Kevin Faulk "Marshall" Faulk twice and Nick Saban "Lou" is unforgivable and that is why he gets a big NEGATIVE from me.I am a big Bama supporter as well and I found his commentary regarding the Capstone to be orange-biased.
Maybe Mr. Ernsberger should be wearing convict orange on the cover?Don't bother folks.Save the $ for tickets.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but old news
If you're already a fan of SEC football, most of what you read will not come as particularly insightful; although it is interesting to read passages regarding Alabama's recruitment of Albert Means, which may have played a part in the NCAA's investigation. There are some factual discrepancies here and there, but if you're looking for an introduction to SEC football, this is a great place to start...for those of you that are already big fans, there may not be much here for you.

To the guy in Bradenton: Before you start ranting about the author's lack of geographic knowledge, you might want to do some fact finding of your own. Hartsfield (not Hartsville) is the name of Atlanta's (international) airport.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Trip off the Beaten Path in Southern Fried Football
The author, and many others, will argue that the SEC is *the* conference for college football. It is a conference of strong rivalries and tough attitude. It's also, as Ernsberger looks at, a conference of athletes who happen to be students, rather than the collegiate student-athlete. He brings up the warts - problems with recruiting, low graduation rates, questionable ethics with athletic departments overseeing athlete tutoring. But these are more of a bookend to the story - a story of rivalry, of politics, of winning above everything else. This is where the heart of the book is, and where Ernsberger comes across as the privelaged observer, rather than someone with an axe to grind. He's not in awe of everything, but he's not out to rip back the veneer of college football either.

Arguably, the book does have it's leanings. Only about half the conference is really explored with many of the schools getting the short shrift and barely a mention. But if you have never been to a big SEC rivalry game, he tries to capture the mood both inside and outside the stadium. You see the lead up to the Auburn-Alabama game (though strangely, he never seems to refer to it by it's common moniker of the Iron Bowl), and the Cocktail Party (Georgia vs. Florida). One of the strengths of the book is that he spends time with all level of participants in this spectacle - the players themselves, the caching staff, the boosters, the administration, the fans and the alumni. The picture drawn shows that everyone is partially to blame for the state the conference is in.

As a passive spectator of the SEC especially after moving to Atlanta, Ernsberger drew together a lot of what swirls around into a coherent package. Everything you need to know? No. A damning expose? No. An interesting overview - yes. This is why you want to read the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The author can`t BRAG about his SEC or geographic knowledge
I cannot believe the typos and errors in this waste of time book. The writer apparently can`t distinguish Ole Miss from Mississippi State and I still wonder how he flew in and out of "Hartsville Airport". Hartsville, SC is a rather small town in Eastern SC and during my last trip through I failed to notice an International Airport.I have been attending SEC football games since the 50`s and find the lack of research that went into this nonwork very offensive. Readers would do better to spend their time reading "Southern Fried Football". ... Read more

Product Description

Football. Far more than a game, America’s favorite spectator sport is an intrinsic part of the nation’s popular culture—a proving ground for high school athletes, a springboard for stars, a multimillion-dollar business, and a vast entertainment enterprise. Football: An Encyclopedia of Popular Culture provides a detailed look at America’s pastime through the lens of pop culture, a fascinating A-to-Z inventory of how certain aspects of the game affect and reflect broader society.

From African Americans in football to the meaning of Zero in the sport, this volume profiles players and personalities, teams and events, games and football concepts, and sociological and technological changes in the sport. The goal is not to name every Hall of Famer or to retell the game’s entire history, but to give a clear and detailed account of where, in football history, the importance of people and events extends beyond the playing field. Its wide-ranging entries examine such names as Joe Montana and Byron “Whizzer” White and phenomena from concussions, mascots, team names, and literature to U.S. presidents and football’s presence in television commercials. The encyclopedia covers all levels of play—professional, collegiate, high school, and youth—offering a from-the-ground-up, gridiron look at the game of football within the matrix of American culture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, edited and told
I, like many reviewers, was hoping for a book worthy to chronicle the history of the AFL and the merger. Unfortunately I got a poorly written mess that didn't seem to know how to organize the book, how to edit effectively, or how to tell what is by itself an interesting story. How this could be turned into such a poorly written history makes me wish I had my 9 bucks back.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Birth of the New NFL
This book was both very informative andvery entertaing concerning the merger of the AFL and NFL.It gave a history of both leagues and centered in on there differences and how they were cleared up.The book also discussed the owners of the AFL and the major NFL owners who called the shots. If you are interested in the history of the AFL and what it brought to the table in the merger, then this book is worth purchasing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where were the editors?
I had high hopes for this book, based on the author's long history reporting on pro football. Sadly, those hopes were cruelly dashed.

This might be the worst-edited book I have ever read. It is replete with errors in spelling, grammar, and most annoyingly, basic facts. For example, in several places the author refers to the "AFC East" when he obviously meant AFL. Would it have been so hard to clean the book up a bit before rushing it out the door?

These problems are all the more infuriating when I noticed that the publisher is part of The Globe Press, a well-respected operation.

In short, while there are some entertaining yarns in this book, I cannot recommend it. It could have been so much better.

4-0 out of 5 stars On the Mark
This was purchased as a gift -- and it was a huge hit with the recipient.
Lots of good football history, for the true fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for football fans and football history buffs

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, But Don't be Misled
First off, this is an excellent book on an exciting modern offense.

Secondly, the title is very misleading. It should be "Coaching Football's Flexbone Offense".This is not the 4- or 5-wide shotgun Spread in use at schools like Purdue, Clemson or West Virginia, nor is it the Spread Option-from-the-shotgun that Florida and others have popularized.

Rather, it is the triple option run from a Flexbone/Run-and-Shoot formation with two wide receivers and two slotbacks, with a single back behind the quarterback, who is under center.

This book is full of invaluable insights from Coach Stowers's days at Georgia Southern University, where the Flexbone attack won six Division I-AA championships. He breaks down the running attack, based on the triple option but with a small and powerful supplement, and includes his sprint-out passing attack and some play action passes as well.

In my opinion, it would be possible to install an effective Flexbone triple option attack from Coach Stowers's book alone.

Highly recommended.

Not coincidentally, the sport of football naturally employs terms usually associated with war, such as "aerial attack," "blitz," and "trench warfare." During World War II, the U. S. military and colleges joined forces, fielding competitive teams to prepare men for combat. The book highlights the Department of the Navy's role in preserving the game and football's impact on national morale and the war effort through their "Lend-Lease" to colleges of officer candidates, including All-America and professional players. It describes wartime college and military football throughout the globe and features a foreword by veteran ESPN college football commentator Beano Cook. It contains 81 photographs and illustrations; listings of college and military teams, records, scores, big games, and statistics; player and team profiles; and a glossary of period football terminology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Football! Navy! War! ....Fantastic!"
This book, a fascinating fusion of two immensely popular genres, sports and WWII history, is simultaneously educational, entertaining and essential. Not only is it extremely well-written, but it's perhaps the most comprehensively researched and information-saturated book on the subject of wartime sports that I've ever seen.Teams, players, seasons, conferences, games - it's all here in one outstanding work.If you're a football fan, a history buff or WWII enthusiast - or all three - this is a must-have title for your personal library.

4-0 out of 5 stars When men were men and football was war.
Every so often in the last twenty years, as American soldiers have fought in Iraq or Iran or Afghanistan, a football player has found himself on the wrong side of public opinion (or the loudmouth version of it voiced on sports talk radio) for using a military analogy."It was a war out there today" seems tame--unless there really is a war and men--men who could be playing games for pay or scholarships--really are in a war with live bullets and real and tragic casualties.

Wilbur Jones tells the story of how the Greatest Generation dealt with that issue. And far from shying away from football during war, the U. S. military (especially the Navy) embraced it.In fact, the title of Jones's interesting book was also the title of a Navy pamphlet extolling the virtues of football as a training ground for physically-hardened, mentally-focused. teamwork-oriented soldiers and leaders on the ships and battlefields of World War II.

When I first heard about "Football! Navy! War!" shortly after reading Last Team Standing: How the Steelers and the Eagles--"The Steagles"--Saved Pro Football During World War II (by Matthew Algeo) I knew I had to read Jones's book as a companion. Algeo tells the story of the NFL, specifically focusing on its Pennsylvania teams that merged to survive the war, and how it managed to keep going.Jones tells the story of how the War actually helped some colleges (through the "Lend-Lease" players) and created a whole new breed of football (through the Service teams) at the same time other colleges were disbanding football teams as a cost- and resource-saving measure.

Jones has done a thorough job scouring old game programs, military records, newspapers, college press releases, and NCAA documentation to piece together this nearly-lost piece of American history. The story of the service teams, representing bases flung all over the country, many of which existed just for the duration of the war, was especially fascinating. Here were men--some fresh from hgh school football teams, some with college experience, some graduated from the college ranks and playing professionally--thrown together on the same base, perhaps only for a few months until called overseas, trained by physical education officers or football coaches into a team representing the base or the unit in games against nearby bases (travel restrictions ensured this).Under these dire circumstances, football flourished! The 1943 Iowa Pre-Flight team was ranked 2nd in the final AP poll, one of four service teams (not including the service academies which were also particularly strong during the war years) in the top 20.

Jones covers the

--reasoning behind the military decisions,
--the types of teams,
--the restrictions caused by the war,
--the college, conference, and NCAA responses to the military presence in football,
--and even the benefits of war (yes there were some, such as a quiet and almost undocumented erasure of color barriers in many locations).

If it was documented, Jones has found it and written about it.One area I might like to have read more about would be how college administrators and athletic directors really felt about the changes to the game during the War.Some prospered, others did not. Some college teams were beaten by teams using players who earlier the same season had suited up for them.Imagine the clamor on sports talk radio if something like this were to happen today!Surely, the administrator opn the losing side of that game wouldn't have been happy, but finding documentation of this would be near impossible, I suspect, given the need to maintain morale and focus 100% of energies on positive steps to win the war.

And this I think is the most interesting part of both of these books:the lengths to which American men and women would go to contribute to winning the war. This was not a half-hearted, half-way effort, this was all out "Football! Navy! War!"It is a level of effort we have trouble imagining today, let alone making.

Any sports fan will find this book well worth the time spent. ... Read more

Product Description
The University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest public universities in the United States and consistently ranks among the finest institutions of higher education on the planet. It has one of the nation's largest library systems, world class art museums, and a Gutenberg Bible. It is the largest employer in Austin and one of the largest in the state, generating $6 billion in business activity annually, all of which is well and good. But as much or more than anything, UT is about one thing: Longhorn football. In a state where football--Pop Warner to pro--ranks somewhere among God, country, and pecan pie, UT football is a religion all its own. For Bobby Hawthorne and millions of other fans, services mean Longhorn football games, where a steer named Bevo presides over a congregation of diehard orange-bloods, where the world's largest bass drum keeps time for a hymn called "The Eyes of Texas," where some of the game's greatest players and coaches have delivered the fourth-most wins in NCAA history. Longhorn Football traces the team's history from its origins in 1893 through the 2006 Rose Bowl, in which Texas won its fourth national championship. The heroes of the last 113 seasons include Dana X. Bible, Bobby Layne, Tommy Nobis, Roosevelt Leaks, Heisman trophy winners Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams, Vince Young, and, of course, Darrell K Royal. In a voice that is equally reverential and iconoclastic, Hawthorne also details the off-the-field traditions--Bevo, Big Bertha, "The Eyes of Texas," and the "Hook 'em Horns" sign, among others--that make Longhorn football more than just a game. He delves into what makes the rivalries with Oklahoma and Texas A&M so intense and nominates a group of all-time Longhorn greats at every position. In short, Longhorn Football chronicles the team that has become a religion "worthy of the great state of Texas." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone who's a Texas fan will love this book!
Wonderful pictures are found on each page.I love looking back at some of the great legends and events that have helped create such an amazing dynasty.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Longhorn fans
I own a dozen or so books about Longhorn football, but this one's my favorite. From the gorgeous photos to the insightful text, this book coversUT football history better than the others. One difference is in the large, coffee-table-sized format. Another is the unmistakable feeling that Hawthorne's "one of us." He's not afraid to use first person pronouns when talking about the Horns, and his commentary nicely captures the feelings of us orange-blooded fans (e.g., the teams we consider rivals). Thanks, Bobby, for this excellent addition to my Longhorn library!

5-0 out of 5 stars LONGHORN FOOTBALL: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY
If you LOVE football as much as I LOVE football, you absolutely must purchase LONGHORN FOOTBALL by up and coming author, Bobby Hawthorne. Hawthorne has gleaned the very best from over 113 years of outstanding Longhorn photography to create a dynamic picture that seems to come to life in your very hands. His insightful commentary only adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.I just couldn't put it down once I opened the book.I could almost hear the crackle of helmets on crisp fall afternoons as I reminisced over many of the best loved players, coaches and fans of the last 100 plus years. In short, this is the book that Darrell Royal would have wanted to be written about the greatest game in the greatest state in the union. Rick Hill ... Read more

Male coaches who molest the female players entrusted to their care...Sexual assault of college women by male athletes...The rise of "sports bars" and topless golf...All-male teams that receive the lion's share of college athletic budgets, despite laws to the contrary. Blending eloquent personal testimonies and surprising factual evidence, author and athlete Mariah Burton Nelson explores how our culture glorifies brutality and examines how th rise of female power in this country has been matched by a growing male contempt, reflected in the increased popularity of the "manly" sports--football, basketball and hockey.

Explosive, insightful, often witty and always thought-provoking, here is an essential, in-depth look at America's male-dominated sports mania, and at the dangerous attitudes fostered behind the closed locker room door.Amazon.com Review
This eye-opening book links gender-based pay and scholarshipinequity with male violence and male domination in sports and societyat large. As this book points out, athletes who rape and male coacheswho brag of beating their wives are often dismissed by our culturewith a "boys will be boys" attitude. Formerly competitive co-ed sportshave been replaced with sex-segregated sports after a woman winsagainst male competitors. Those dubious signals sent to boys such as"don't throw like a girl" are all designed to glorify masculinity andkeep it safe from so-called female interference and contamination. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The brilliant title says it all
I had the honor of interviewing Mariah Burton Nelson about this book when it was first published.I still have my signed, heavily dog-eared and annotated copy on the shelf, along with other excellent analyses of masculinity, sports, and violence.

Unfortunately -- though not surprisingly -- nothing has changed since 1994.Athletes of the "manly" sports continue to commit crimes out of all proportion to their representation in the population at large, and continue to get away with them.Their victims, most often of assault and rape, continue to be pilloried.Fans, coaches, parents, and officials continue to ignore or belittle these crimes and their consequences.Alcohol-fueled, testosterone-driven behavior at college parties is still the norm, locker room codes of silence still hold, the wink-wink nudge-nudge tolerance of "boys will be boys" is still accepted.

And those of us who've grown hoarse pointing it out keep plugging away.

Read this book for a comprehensive overview of the American culture of sports and the belligerence it breeds.Remember it especially the next time you hear somebody spouting off about "family values."(Oh, and the evidence of homoeroticism is alone worth the price of admission; that especially raises sports fans' hackles!)

Other excellent books in this vein are: OUR GUYS by the late Bernard Lefkowitz, FRATERNITY GANG RAPE by Peggy Reeves Sanday, PROS AND CONS by Jeff Benedict and Dan Yaeger,BEER AND CIRCUS by Murray Sperber, BOYS WILL BE BOYS by Myriam Miedzian, PUBLIC HEROES PRIVATE FELONS by Jeff Benedict, and MASCULINITIES, GENDER RELATIONS, AND SPORT by Jim McKay, Michael A. Messner, and Donald F. Sabo.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for College Athletes
This book does a great job of describing many of the obstacles faced by female athletes. It has greatly helped me redefine my athletic goals and understand what I may encounter as I continue my athletic pursuits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing. Could NOT stop reading this book.
This book is truly enlightening. While i know some of her claims are contestable (as all theory is), i still want to sew her thoughts into my brain so they will be available for instant access and referral.I have always been wary of our sports culture; Nelson tells me why.Nelson in no way condemns athletics or sports, but rather the sexism that has evovled around American sports culture, and the possible reasons for this evolution.Unfortunately i know that this book would not be palatable for many sports fans; for that reason it is so utterly poignant.

3-0 out of 5 stars Be careful that this doesn't make you start to hate men.
... While it does have some valid points regarding sexism in sports and sexism of male athletes, it takes things a little far. Reading for any prolonged period tends to give one a very negative view of men in general and athletes in particular. In addition, the author underestimates the strength of women, and discounts the possibility that being viewed as a sex object can be both stimulating and empowering to them. Her depiction of cheerleaders and topless dancers, among other things, were very shallow. The whole book is very one-dimensional, and seems to be written by the kind of rabid feminist that gives feminism a bad name. Not everyone out there believes that all men conspire to bring women down and subjugate them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Feminist Sports Enthusiasts
I discovered this book only recently and it is a remarkable work. Nelson eloquently describes many of the obstracles of sexism that remain in women's sports today. While much progress has been made, many inequities remain as she clearly reports. While this book was initially published in 1994, it is still very relevant. The disparities in the money made by elite female athletes when compared to elite male athletes remain vast and disturbing. All feminists who also love sports will love this book. ... Read more

Received this as a gift and it is a real fun read/play. It comes with an attached electronic "answer devise" that makes answering the questions in random order, a fun game. The only problem I have with this is if the electronic answer thing ever breaks or the batteries run out (which are not a normal size), the book is useless. Very interesting. Alot of insight into the game, but could use a little more explanation on what they are talking about. He starts going into plays and you kinda sit there and scratch your head.

Great book outlining a proven method of setting up a successful program which was what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars What every coach should know about building and maintaining a football program
Coach Allan Trimble has a 111-9 record and six consecutive Class 6A state championship titles. And his winning list goes on and on...

His book is a step by step guide on how to start and maintain asuccessfull football program.

This book covers the I-formation (power running game with a wide open passing attack) and a versatile multiple defensive system. Which, he used to win a 32-2 career playoff record and 25 consecutive playoff victories.

This book is very user friendly. Coach Trimble uses tons of pictures and diagrams. If you do not understand what he is talking about, all you have to do is look at the pictures. If you are looking for a play book, here it is. This book is great for youth to college level.

Product Description
2009 reprint of 1921 First edition. John William Heisman (1869-1936) was a prominent American football player and college football coach in the early era of the sport and is the namesake of the Heisman Trophy awarded annually to the season's best college football player. He was an innovator and theoretician of the sport. He was a proponent of the legalization of the forward pass in 1906 and he originated the "hike" or "hep" shouted by the quarterback to start each play. He suggested that the game be divided into quarters instead of halves.Heisman subsequently became the athletics director of the former Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan, New York. In 1935 the club began awarding a Downtown Athletic Club trophy for the best football player east of the Mississippi River. On December 10, 1936, just two months after Heisman's death on October 3, the trophy was renamed the Heisman Memorial Trophy, and is now given to the player voted as the season's best nationwide collegiate player. Principles of Football is Heisman's theoretical contribution to the sport, and remains a classic text in the field. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Principles for the 1920's BASICS for today!
I have read many books on football. This book is a book for parents who do not know the game, or the benefits their child recieves from playing the game. The diet offered in this book has many reminders but it also has misinformation as well. The axioms in this book: 30 offensive "don'ts", 30 defensive "don'ts", 25 "use this or that", 20 "Always", 10 "Can'ts", 20 "Nevers", then it goes on about a list for the passer, the receiver, and the punter. "ALWAYS play with your head, USE your brain, CAN'T play the game without your head, and DON'T lose the game".You get the point. As for the personal plays - they are the basic plays run from the single wing formation. How many times have you seen the single wing in college or the NFL lately? There are better books about football out there.-Heisman WAS a great coach!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I bought this because of the name--Heisman. But, wow, who would think ... his own personal play book, and all. Cool, very cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars The basics never change--great training tips give you edge
THe great name of John Heisman got me interested in this book because he is the coach the Heisman Trophy is named after. The amazing [part about this book is that it was written in like 1925 but the game hasn't changed that much and what Heisman preached then should be practiced today. There is a section of "Wizard's Wisdom" like do's and don't's of the game that is like "Life's Little Instruction Book" for young players and their parents and their coaches. Its like uncovering ancient widsom that's been buried in a tomb somewhere. Lots of forgotten training tips that are awesome to rediscover because no one else knows them. ... Read more

Product Description
Football coaches say the greatest improvement occurs between games one and two of the season. If that adage can be applied to football books, you’re in for a treat, as Pro Football Prospectus builds on its successful debut with the 2003 edition. Improving on what FOXSports.com called "361 pages of football goodness" will be tough, but Sean Lahman, Todd Greanier, and their collection of football connoisseurs are back to cogitate on the 2002 season and calculate what might happen in 2003.

Pro Football Prospectus builds from the innovative Football Project, a full play-by-play database that allows an evaluation of every offensive and defensive series leaguewide. In the 2002 edition, it provided statistics for a unique sacks-to-pass-plays ratio. In the 2003 edition, discover whether scrambling QBs are more effective than pocket passers, and see the true impact of special teams play.

The Prospectus also features a brand new statistic, DPro, to rate defensive players. It combines sacks, tackles, assists, interceptions, fumble recoveries, and defensive touchdowns-the NFL doesn’t even officially collect tackle and fumble recovery stats, but the Football Project does!-to give the reader a statistical comparison of defensive players by position. This year’s edition introduces Adjusted Yards, a system for rating offensive players and return specialists that helps answer such questions as, Does it make sense to draft quarterbacks in the first round? Who really are the greatest running backs of all time? At what age do wide receivers peak?

No other football annual provides so much information about the game’s past and present and insights into future seasons. With statistics, essays, discussions, and even fantasy football rankings, Pro Football Prospectus gives you the ultimate football experience! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
I love books of this genre. The baseball prospectus books are a national treasure.I enjoyed Football by the Numbers and The Hidden Game of Football when they came out in the 80's.This book is so far behind where it should have been.Sure it's decent analysis but no better than you can get in any fantasy football magazine.I really could have done better with about a month of typing. There was NOTHING groundbreaking about it.Where the baseball guys make are innovating, this is more mindless pablum. The basketball one had some improvements over the Basketball abstracts and Hoopstats of the late 80's-early 90's, but this football left me flat. For example, to not even adjust the expected yards per carry by the 3 d's : Down, distance, and defense. How can you still publish 'analysis' comparing to league averages? How 1984 pre-PC/excel spreadsheets can you get? It's not terribly written, there's some entertainment to it, but no more analysis than you can get by dropping 4.95 on a Street and Smiths.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touchdown!
I bought this book last year, and was very excited to see that someone was doing serious football analysis again. When this year's edition arrived, my jaw dropped. It's about 100 pages longer full of fascinating stuff.

First, the player comments section is greatly expanded. Not sure if they included more players, but the writeups are significantly longer. They've added sections for coaches (not just head coaches but the whole coaching staff) and special teams.

Second, the team essays are just fascinating. Sure, they cover the important points about each team... looking at why this team collapsed last year or what that team has done during the offseason. For each team they ask a general question, and while it certainly relates to the team in question, it tends to be a full-fledged statistical study that has broader applications. For the Titans, they observe that running backs tend to have a sharp decline after the age of thirty. With the Browns, they look at the connection between the offensive line play and a team's overall success. For Seattle, they examine the criteria for coaches to get into the Hall of Fame.

Finally, I have to say that the authors knocked my socks off with the hard-core analysis that begins the book. They introduce a number of statistical tools, some of which we've seen before but most of which are brand new. My guess is that most readers will skip past the number crunching to find out about their favorite team or to scout players for their fantasy league. For stat-geeks like me, it's the sabrmetric-type studies that are most interesting.I haven't had time to fully digest all of the work here, and I intend to so my own studies to weigh the merits of what Lahman and Greanier have done. But it's exciting to see that this sort of analytical approach is being undertaken for football, that there is a football book worthy of the "Prospectus" name.As someone who loves football as much as I do, I'm thrilled to see this book done so well. ...
