Product Description
In 1948, the first skiers to experience the steep and twisting downhill trails of Mad River Glen had to traverse muddy or frozen dirt roads to get to their destination. The warmth of a country inn was a comfort on those cold winter nights and continues as a hallmark of the Mad River Valley today. Even with the condo boom that developed after the opening of Sugarbush on Christmas Day in 1958, little has upset the ambience of the 20-mile-long valley. The valley developed a distinct personality, attracting "ski bums" who exchanged urban pressures for a laid-back lifestyle that continues today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Guide to Skiing
This book is great help to those who want to learn ski with many illustrations. It is well organized with easy-to-understand description. It also has a lot of tips which comes from author's experiences. To me, this book has been extremely helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think I'm about to become a great skier
I have been skiing for over 30 years. I have never been able to quite get out of the "Intermediate Rut". However after reading Mr Heckleman's New Guide to Skiing, and having viewed his DVD x 2 [The Carving tips is the best] I cannot wait to reach the slopes. This is a wonderful tutorial and for at least two reasons. First, he covers many aspects of technique; he is not obsessed with any one-only technique but covers a number with the Oh so helpful acknowledgment that is IS OK to do it this or that way, depending upon.......
Secondly, he makes a habit of an introduction, then the 'meat' of the lesson, and then a summary and review.

Martin you get 10 out of 10 stars from me. You have given me a new level of joy and enthusiasm and with the snow here in Downunder NZ beginning to fall, I cannot wait to put-into-practice your teachings in this, my 70th year.
Thanks Buddy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ski instuctor in my pocket -- excellent
I'm 53 and had skied intermediate for years. I wanted to be able to ski black diamond so as keep up with my teenage sons. I figured I'd take lessons to get there, despite the $$$. But I decided to buy a book first, get what I could out of the book, then take lessons. Great call. I'm doing black diamonds with confidence now. I've learned so much from this excellent book. It's very well organized. The author provides concise instructions with clear, accompanying photo sequences.

So now I have an infinitely patient, detail-oriented, experienced instructor right in my pocket, ready to teach me new skills as I master the old. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve his or her skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent teacher
I was already over 50 when I started skiing. I bought this book after my first ski trip and it became my ski bible. I review it at the beginning of each season. Thanks to this book and lift chair companions and videos that I got from the local library, I do diamonds easily in Utah (I find diamonds in Colorado easier than those in Utah.)

5-0 out of 5 stars haven't broken anything yet
Just started skiing this year.39 y/o male. The book has been a good resource in addition to the lessons I have taken.I have read through a few times and get more and more out of it as I have progressed as a skiier ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing
Of all the books and videos Harald has done, this is the most understandable, and concise. The video portion is very short, and acts as a teaser so we will buy the full video version... which we will.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Finest Ski Instruction Text In Existence
This is simply the finest ski instruction text in existence today.I've read a great many ski instruction books and nobody can articulate the mechanics of modern technique at a level that even comes close to Harald. If you've ever been frustrated by vague instructions like "be patient at the top of the turn" or "skiing ice is like skiing on eggs--you must be gentle yet aggressive" then this book is for you. There are no weak metaphors that you must try to interpret. This is just simple, straightforward explainations with no guessing required.

"Essentials of Skiing" distills skiing into six essential movements that once mastered will result in the kind of skiing we all aspire to; the kind of skiing that shows up in ski movies.Harald's instruction is both simple and effective and he includes plenty of great drills with external cues to help you learn to perform the movements and evaluate whether you are doing them correctly.

What Harald teaches is effective and it works for skiers of all ability levels. My skiing improved exponentially when I started applying what he is teaching.

It is rare to find someone who is both a great skier and a great teacher, but Harald is both of these things. He raced on the World Cup in his youth and then became a coach of skiers who would race on the US Ski Team, win Olympic medals and appear in ski movies.I cannot think of any other contemporary ski authors with his qualifications. This is world class coaching available to anyone.

When you read this book, you will be simply astonished at how well Harald explains modern ski technique. This is particularly true if you have read some of the other authors out there, or have read some of the "instruction" articles in the skiing magazines. There is simply no comparison between Harald and everyone else.

In addition to the book, Harald has also published a very fine DVD series for the "Essentials Of Skiing".This is available through his website and I would also highly recommend it.

I highly recommend all of Harald's products. When you consider the costs of ski lessons, the value of what he is offering cannot be understated. His stuff has helped my skiing improve beyond my wildest expectations (and in a very short amount of time). This is the gold standard of ski instruction and I would encourage anyone to take advantage of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harald Harb's Essentials of Skiing
Harb's book is a practical explanation of technique for the advanced skier. I found the DVD to be particularly useful for demonstration of the exercises.

Some people can do and not teach, but I believe that Harb can both do and teach this technique. I have skied for over 30 years and learned from this book. I am looking forward to next season.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sky's the limit !
This book , as a follow on from his previous books , is a must buy for anyone wanting to improve . It clearly breaks down all basic and "Essential" movements . The language is clear and concise .

As a former terminal intermediate I now realise that I can ski like the WC racers .
Of course a lot of work is needed to get there but the way is open whereas before all I could see was a cloud of confusion .

the detractors all have an axe to grind . Marco ( Polo ) for example has his own system as a supposed coach but his concepts of wide stance etc are all now well and truly debunked by recognised race coaches . Check the testimonials . Harald himself trained the likes of Chris Davenport and Tommy Moe . I have seen coaches come up to Harald , hat in hand , to ask advice on technique and alignment . Bennie Raich's coach changed his alignment on Haralds advice with immediate improvement in results . He skis with and fits boots for Eric Schlopy . etc. etc . etc .

The great thing about his books and method is that it doesn't matter at what level you are you can improve .
This is no quick "band aid" method , like anything worthwhile , the student has to put in the effort to get the best . ( and leave his ego at the door , something a lot have trouble with )
Having said that , even with a minimal effort you will still get some benefit , still far morethan with traditional schools .

A side effect of studying this method is a greater appreciation and enjoyment of WC racing , you can see the techniques in action at the highest level .

I spent many years looking for the best , most up to date instruction in France , Austria and Spain .( Spain , believe it or not ,I found generally better than the others )Nothing compares .

5-0 out of 5 stars The fundamental of the two previous books.
For me, the previous 2 books of this book, Anyone can be an expert skier 1/2, focus on the final products of skiing skills, such as lift and tilt(book1), brush carve, bullet proof short turn, weighted release, super phantom move(book2), while in this third book, the emphasis is on the fundamental skills to make those previous ones perfect.

However, if you haven't read the previous books and jump to read this one, you might not see the thought behinds each exercises. Two reason are it loads with technical details that would be more understandable with some reading on the previous books and the included dvd is just the trailer of another 3 dvds which just came out and are only available on the author's site( http://www.harbskisystems.com/detessent.htm ). I guess they did not have time to produce the complete set of dvds to sell with the book. The 3 dvds are worth to have, they illustrate how to perform each exercise correctly, especially when you don't understand or misunderstand what's written in the book.

My last thought is no matter how much you know of PMTS(the system that these books are based on), you won't be able to perform them efficiently and could be frustrated if your boot alignment is way off. So, to start enjoying pmts, the first step I recommend is get the boot alignment right(by a certified pmts guy), read the 3 books starting from book1, watch the dvds, and perform exercises in those material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The most informative Book on Skiing
I personally found this book easy to understand, the authors made sure that they gave only the information that you needed, when you needed it,And all the information was explained in detail. With the companion video it justgets better. To put it simple, this book explains it all from A to Ski!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational. The only ski training book you need.
This is the most up-to-date and complete guide I have run across. Its coverage is encyclopedic, yet remarkably succinct, covering every issue from equipment to skills, drills, and mental approaches. It should beuseful to avid skiers and instructors at any level, supplanting volumes ofmanuals normally available only to professional instructors, yet theexercises detail a path that even novices can effectively pursue todevelop the most refined technique. The book is perfectly complemented bythe companion video which gives clear evidence that the book'sprogression of exercises can cluminate in the gorgeous turns the Ms. PostFoster, her coauthors, and demo team do so effortlessly. The combinedeffect is truly inspirational.

This book is the only ready material youshould take on your next ski trip.If you read it before then (and youshould), you will quickly develop a powerful longing for the slopes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all skiers who want to perfect carving
This is a fantastic book for all level of skiers. It will take you through the steps to using your shaped skies as they were meant to be used. By the way: There is a video that accompanies this book - it is also excellent. And should be watched the first several times with the sound - and thenmute the sound and just watch the skiing. Maybe Amazon.com could supply it?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I spent quite some time in bookstores looking for a book that would teach me how to get the most out of my new shaped skis.I found out quickly that almost all cover only traditional skis. This book is an exception.Althought it addresses both very well I would prefer that it focusedexclusively on shaped skis.Who is buying traditional skis nowadaysanyway?Although the pictures are detailed and easy to follow they wouldbe even more effective accompanied by a training video.Ms. Foster whydon't you make a video to go with the book?I'd be among the first to buyit! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good chapter on maintenance; not much on repair
Technicals: about 140 pages, about 60 of them about maintenance (tuning) of skis, 20 pages on boot fit and maintenance, 15 pages on bindings, and about 5 on poles and goggles. Impression: the section on ski tuning and repair is very good, extensively illustrated and well explained. The tools and materials required for each operation are explained in great detail, and it seems to me (to the best of my limited knowledge of ski maintenance) that they did not change much since the book was published. The section on bindings is very generic and out-of-date. It gives some ideas what tools are used to install or move bindings, but the level of presentation is not even close to the level of discussion of ski tuning. Since bindings were so different 15 years ago, there is nothing about adjusting binding settings in this book that can be used. The section on boots is even more useless. Thus, if you are looking for a book on how to maintain and repair the bottom of your skis, you have found one; if you are looking for a manual how to deal with bindings or boots, keep on looking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written and easy to follow
After reading this book and following its direction, I am able to tune my whole family's skis to a high precision.Three of my children race and their performances have clearly improved. Now they really notice when their skis are out of tune.Mr. Rader does an excellent job of describing every step involved in tuning/waxing skis - Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars good introductory book on ski tunning
I read this book and I must say I was quite pleased with it. It offers a good guide to ski tunning, with step by step instructions. I particularly liked the checklist at the beginning of each chapter that made the wholebook as a sequential script on how to fine tune our skis. It doesn't,however, go too much into the details of ski tunning, but that was not itspurpose anyways. I would say that this book is a wonderfull complement toSeth Masia's book, where more detailed stuff can be found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Simple! Made me feel like an expert ski tech!
Not only does From Tip to Tail provide you with a WORKING knowledge of ski tuning, it offers up something that other ski tuning manuals don't‹simplicity and focus. I found that after having read this small, but potently illustrated book, the art of ski tuning suddenly was within my grasp. Now I'm keeping that money I used to dole out to ski techs and buying the author a ceegar ... Read more

Product Description
Alpine skiing (or "downhill skiing") is the sport of sliding down snow-covered hills on skis with fixed-heel bindings. Alpine skiing can be contrasted with nordic skiing, in which skiers use free-heel bindings. (Types of nordic skiing include cross-country, ski jumping and Telemark.) Alpine skiing may take place at a ski resort where mechanical ski lifts have been installed to transport skiers up the mountain and where snow is groomed, avalanches are controlled and trees are cut to create trails. Alternatively, alpine skiers may pursue the sport in less controlled environments; this practice is variously referred to as ski touring, backcountry skiing or extreme skiing. The sport is named for the European Alps where it originated in the late 1880s. Today, it is popular wherever the combination of snow, mountain slopes, and a sufficient tourist infrastructure can be built up, including parts of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, the South American Andes and East Asia. ...
