5-0 out of 5 stars Good practice book
If you're learning guitar on a "self taught" schedule I would highly recommend this book.It provides lessons of increasing difficulty for seven different areas of focus broken down on a weekly schedule. This is a positive for two reasons, one it gives a new "15 minute lesson" idea for each week and secondly it 'forces' you into working on techniques that you may not be good at.The accompanying CD's are appreciated for people who learn through audio channels.

I am primarily an acoustic player so some the sweep picking and legato techniques were initially very hard if not completely foreign to me however I feel I am a better player through them.

Overall, I recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guitar Aerobics: A 52-Week, One-lick-per-day Workout Program for Developing, Improving and Maintaining Guitar Technique
This is a great book if you are dedicated to the guitar. Nelson Troy, in my opinion, assumes that everyone is at his level and will throw some crazy things at you all at once. Just take it slowly. This isn't a beginners book - it should be your 2nd or 3rd technique book - or should be used with a teacher. Overall there is a lot of great info here - something for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Student Teacher Guitar Book Out There
As a guitar teacher and performer for over 25 years I can honestly say this is the best book I've come across in a long time. It requires discipline and consistent practice to master all 52 weeks and also builds on a step by step basis. As most of the beginning functions start with Box I in A Minor it is a useful tool that will build upon all aspects of picking, hammer-ons, pull-offs, arpeggios, alternate picking, sweeping, and most importantly rhythm. If you do it right and keep your promise of a day to day practice routine you will get better with this book. If you have students that are middle school through high school this book is perfect because you can tell if they actually practiced or not because if they did they will play all 7 days. GET THIS BOOK NOW!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars anything that gets the fingers moving....
This book is probably a good supplement to study along with a good guitar teacher. Although the ability to read notation is not necessary being able to read tablature is, to understand the exercises. A good teacher will explain the rhythms, which a student should be getting anyway in private instruction. The exercises are shown in sets that you practice over a week's time for a year. This book is not for the total beginner but for someone who has been playing for awhile. The way I see it: anything that gets the left hand coordinating with the right hand is good, and this book has plenty of things to do to facilitate that coordination. It's also nice to have a weekly goal to practice, so as to see steady progress.

4-0 out of 5 stars Building Guitar Skills
Successful guitar skills depend on developing dexterity, strength, and agility. The exercises in this book are aimed improving those capabilities. A brief new exercise is provided for each day of the week. For the seven days of each week, the focus is on a different skill. A good thing is that some of the exercises are very challenging. But some are easier to master. This helps to keep from getting frustrated.
The exercises aren't necessarily exciting, but if a guitar student uses thisbook faithfully, he or she can't help but grow more proficient in the skills necessary to play guitar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite dog-eared reference book!
I have followed the Cooper's (husband/wife) aerobics plan since the 1970's, and I refer to Ken's "Point System" (in the Appendix) almost daily. I use those points to attain weekly, monthly and yearly fitness goals, no gym or personal coach needed. As far as the contents of the rest of the book goes, it's sensible advice to build a lifestyle around. And I have to admit... having five dogs that want to race walk or jog with me at the drop of the hat certainly dosn't hurt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Aerobics Program For Total Well Being:by Ken Cooper
One of the most comprehensive studies on fitness as related to exercise, diet, mental well being, etc. all substantiated by actual research data.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great System/ Some Quirky Sentiments
After misplacing my copy of Cooper's earlier "The Aerobic Way," I purchased this book. This book is a bit weaker.

Cooper's unique "point system" is the book's greatest asset. The system is an elegantly simple, scientifically sound way to help you achieve health.Cooper assignsaerobic points to a wide variety of exercises, another huge plus.

How's good is this system? I have tracked my Cooper points since college in the late 80's as a runner/ jogger. As 40 approached, my knees began to rebel. To quell the revolt, I decided to switch from running/ jogging to cycling and cross-country machines. Having lost the earlier book, I went out of my way to buy this book so I could determine the point-level of the new regimen. That should tell the reader of the utility and draw of Cooper's over-all approach.

One vital thing Cooper added, which had been missing from the earlier book, is a series of pragmatic, easy-to-follow dietary recommendations. Eat lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains: complex carbohydrates. Focus on lean meats and low-fat dairy products. Avoid processed foods and gratuitous fats and simple sugars.

My criticisms begin with Cooper's questionable blanket statements regarding the fit versus sedentary:fit people are more creative, stress hardy, happy, effective and independent thinking than those in poor condition. Is this opinion or data driven? Never disclosing the sources of his statements, Cooper then prescribes exercise to improve a person's mental heath.Again, has this been proven with a double blind or thorough, longitudinal study?Or just dogma?

Lastly, there is a strange, almost comical messiah complex sprinkled through the text. Cooper mentions quite a few times that he was "chosen by God" to spread his gospel of preventative medicine. This is overkill, even for a Christian like me. A simple "I thank God for giving me the opportunity to help people lead healthier, happier lives," in either the Preface or Dedication pages would have sufficed.

With all these down-sides, however, I still have to grant the book a four-star rating based on Cooper's excellent point system and solid, if incomplete dietary recommendations. Now, if we could only weed out the silly pop-psychology and evangelical fervor, we'd have a great book...

2-0 out of 5 stars Out Dated
Overall, Cooper's book on Aerobic Fitness has some excellent info on beginning a fitness program if you are a beginner to exercising. However, a lot of the information that has been compiled is out of date from the late 1970's and early 1980's.Do not use this book if you are designing your own Exercise Program.Do more research on the internet by simply using the search word "exercise"; you will have a wealth of current knowledge and numerous references to review.Do not start an exercise program without first consulting with your doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for a better life - again
This book served me as a guide and inspiration for major life changes through the 1980's.Over the last 8-10 years I had not only lost the book but had lost the motivation it provided.I immediately reread it on receipt and have been slowly moving my eating and exercise habits back to that which had served me so well.

I would strongly recommend Dr Cooper & his philosophy to anyone who is serious about taking control of their life.Hard work that pays tremendous dividends. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I'm afraid I was disappointed in this book.I was looking for something with more illustrated exercises, perhaps using noodles.I think this book is a little outdated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information
This book has been very beneficial. It has provided a full range of movements for me to complete in the water.I have been doing these exercises for a few weeks now and I feel much better overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars water workout
Great book.Explains things well.My water pilates instructor had the book and felt that it was very good as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful and a lot of fun
As a total non-swimmer and out of shape middle-aged woman, I found this book extremely helpful and the exercises a lot of fun.I don't really know any swimming strokes, but love the water and found these exercises have helped me to put on some muscle and take off some weight.I have osteoarthritis in my knees, shoulder problems, neck problems, and had hurt my feet on the treadmill. With this book I was able to keep exercising.I have loved it.The only reason I didn't give it a five is because it's not water proof and needs something you can take with you to the water area, if not into the water.I found the directions easy to follow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent all-around book for those seeking to get fit
If you had to own just one book on fitness, this would be an excellent choice. It covers the waterfront -- basic fitness concepts; clothing and equipment selection; flexibility exercises for warm-up and cool-down; resistance exercises for improved muscle tone; step aerobics and aerobic dance; exercise variants using weights, bands, stability balls; nutrition and weight control; injury prevention; even how to select an exercise facility and instructor. The content is based on the latest research in the field, and supplemented by helpful worksheets for key elements of a fitness program, such as determining your target heart rate and monitoring your fitness and cardiorespiratory performance status. There are excellent photos illustrating the exercises to do and, perhaps more important, the exercises to avoid. Before I got this book I was trying to cobble together my own fitness program from various web sites, and wondering why I was hurting most of the time. This book helped me enormously in putting together a more sensible fitness and weight-loss program that I have been able to sustain without injury.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Photos....
I'm only reviewing the 4th Edition here -- and only a very small part, which is all I was able to glance at at the time...some photos of common exercises which the book advised against! Not just stuff like the sit-up which we now know to be bad for the back, but also side stretches, leg lifts, tilting/rolling the head backwards!Duck walks, the bridge...so many things which had been used during the tae kwon do training of my youth are listed as being dangerous here! You really must see the photos to know what I'm talking about...hopefully this Sixth Edition also has them -- it'll surprise even gym rats! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Fit.....This worked for me
A lawyer friend challenged me to take the fitness test by seeing how far I could run/walk in 12 minutes.
I just scraped into the 'poor' category
He gave me my original copy of Kenneth Coopers, 'Aerobics'which I passed around friends and yes, I lost track of it and have since obtained another copy through Amazon.
I selected the running program which I discovered to be so accurate in estimating my progress. On my first day I walked 1 mile in 6 minutes over the target which meant I had to walk faster.
Then each week, I managed to reach further targets (utterly exhausted after the run to make the target)
I was amazed that after 7 weeks I was covering the mile in under 7 minutes and lost 15 kilos and reduced my belt size to 36 inches.
I was 'jumping out of my skin' I felt so good.
Of particular interest I found that if I consumed a few glasses of wine the night before my run, I would lose up to 15 seconds from my anticipated goal. Dont hesitate, get a copy and live longer

I like this book for the older students. Age 7 up. A little too much for the 5-6 group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great exercise for the untrained fingers
Never played piano in my life. I used this book in conjunction with Play Piano Now Book 1 of the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course. The exercises are easy to learn and understand. I have memorized the warm ups by using them every day. My fingers behave themselves now when I sit down to practice. I'm moving on to Play Piano Now Book 2. Woohoo! Not bad for a great grandma.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For Beginning Piano Students
I am an adult beginner and using the Alfred Basic Adult course books.I like this 'Finger Aerobics' book and I use it every day in conjunction with the lesson book.I use the exercises in this book as warm-ups because it gets my mind thinking about which fingers play which notes before I open up and review lesson material.

This book is excellent.40 years old, but excellent. It is presented in a logical, easy to understand format. The information in the book is based on research that Doctor Cooper did as an Air Force doc in Texas. While giving "aerobic points" to a variety of exercises and sports, Dr. Cooper presents to the reader that jogging/running is the simplest, most effective way, to improve your cardiovascular and pulmonary health.

I have read this book twice now and find it well worth the time.

Product Description
Would you flee in terror if confronted with a room full of sweaty people in spandex thongs?

Are you not immune to the occasional Joe Strummer-style air guitar jump?

If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, here at last is your workout book. As simple as throwing on that old Ramones (or even White Stripes) record, punk meets fitness in an exercise craze that is spreading like wildfire amongst teens and aging rockers alike: Punk Rock Aerobics. Though punk and aerobics may seem to be unlikely bedfellows -the love child of Richard Hell and Richard Simmons?-here are two "formerly decrepit, lazy, cigarette-smoking, beer drinking" rockers-turned-certified-aerobics-instructors as enthusiastic about X and Iggy Pop as they are about getting into shape.

Full of easy-to-follow moves in a home-exercise-friendly format, Punk Rock Aerobics is a calorie-burning, DIY workout. Back in the "good old days" cigarettes might have sufficed to keep rockers slim, posit these authors, but to really be able to rock out all night, you need to drop those chips and get off the couch.Peppered throughout to help you stay inspired are Q&A's and photos of rockers on their own workout routines:

  • J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. perfecting the "Face Down Butt Lift."
  • Mary Timony doing the "Jumping Jacked Ups."
  • K Records' Calvin Johnson on the philosophical implications of Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore declaring "it's not the poundage so much as the roundage that I have a problem with."
  • Hugo Burnham on the percentage of Jack Daniels (60) that comprised his sweat back in his glory days drumming for Gang of Four.

Also included to help you get rid of the Schlitz gut is a sure-to-be-controversial discography for picking your favorite MP3's, CD's, and LP's. As Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth declares, "Just put on yr favorite punker and "kick out the jams, motherf***er." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Punk?
"Punk Rock Aerobics" is great for ladies who know little about punk or exercise. The pictures and directions of the "killer moves" are easy to follow, but the girls' "punk" costumes are, if anything, distracting and comical. The "50 Punk Classics" leave MUCH to be desired...leaving out many crucial punk bands and including mediocre music and non-punk (Devo?). The book, does, however, include a short list of some good punk movies, like Suburbia and Sid & Nancy and some helpful motivators to get up and exercise (including solutions to common problems + obstacles faced by women on the road to fitness). However, I think I might get more of a workout riding my bike to the beer distributor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bizarre union violating the natural and godly order of things
Punk Rock Aerobics is a "bizarre union violating the natural and godly order of things" by combining the nonconformist underdog with the spandex-clad squeaky clean. The concept is completely DIY--no gym or special equipment required. And of course, the authors have compiled a hundred-plus discography to make your workout rock out.The Boston-based authors obtained their instructor certifications and opened an aerobics studio in 2001, and now their bring attitude and moves to you in paperback format. They make their studio mercifully dark (like a good rock clubs) and welcome guests of all ages and interests.

In addition to all the punk rock posturing, this is a good workout book. The program includes warm-up and cool-down phases.Individual moves have photo illustrations (with punk rock fashion ideas galore), detailed instructions, and tips for optimal performance.Moves are rated by difficulty and include advanced techniques for further exploration.

4-0 out of 5 stars minor sweat
I love this book! It doesn't just give you the right movies, but gives you music/movie/book recommendations. This book is for any punk fan who wants to look as good as Henry Rollins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hell yeah!
Ok, I am NOT a person who exercises, but when I picked up this book, I knew that was all about to change. I always wanted a fit, trim body, but all the exercises that I ever did were boring, boring, boring. This book makes exerciseing fun. So pick up your copy today, blast some tunes, and get your ass up and groove!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercise with Attitude!
    This book is so great!

I never would have thought of blending the punk rock attitude with exercise. And this book does it so well!

Punk Rock Aerobics was a gift from a friend who got tired of hearing me complain about wanting to get in shape, so at first I took the book as a joke. After all, the photos are hysterical and it's written in way that you don't associate with "exercise" books. Well, turns out that's what makes it so great! This book is far from a joke; it's almost a way of life!

I just wish these girls taught classes in Portland!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good suggestions on reducing the ravishes of advancing age
This books presents basic information anyone can incorporate to try to evade the ravishes of advancing age. Cooper gives recommendations in regards to exercise, stress management, diet, supplements, and related matters that will help people to retain their youthful energy.

He also explains that most people have unrealistic expectations on how much their physical abilities will decline with advancing age. Most people tend to think the decline is much more rapid and pronounced than it really is. This is particularly encouraging to me since I just turned 40!

His recommendations in regards to exercise include doing aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises. It is important for one to do all three kinds of exercises. Doing so will reduce the loss that most people experience in each of these areas.

He correctly notes that emotional stress can be as much a drain on one's vitality as poor exercise and diet habits. And as a Christian, I appreciate that he emphasizes that spiritual activities like prayer, Bible study, and attending worship services are ideal ways to deal with stress.

In regards to diet, he presents "bedrock principles" like eating more fruits and vegetables and reducing one's intake of fat. And he correctly points out that trans fat, found in hydrogenated oils, are the worst kind of fat. He doesn't go into too much detail in regards to diet in this book. But what he does give I tend agree with as I present similar information in much greater detail in my book "Creationist Diet: Nutrition and God-given Foods According to the Bible."

But it is in regards to supplements that I disagree with Cooper. He wholeheartedly recommends high doses of the antioxidant vitamins beta-carotene (the precursor to vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E, along with the mineral selenium. He claims taking amounts several times the RDA helps to prevent heart disease and cancer. However, the evidence is not as clear-cut as Cooper makes it sound. I include a chapter in my book citing scientific studies in this regard. Some have shown a reduced risk from taking antioxidants, but other studies have shown no effect.

But that disagreement aside, this book does present helpful information for those of us who are starting to worry about our health and vitality as we age.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few gems, but mostly a rehash in need of an editor
This book basically covers ground other Cooper books have covered, but in a more confusing way.If you have read the other Cooper books, there is little need to pick up this one other than a few pages on retaining bonedensity. If you have not read the other books, this one is an o.k.introduction if you are willing to wade through a lot of crapola to get tothe good stuff.

This is mainly aimed at the generation above 40.Cooperreaffirms his belief in aerobics, but doesn't mention the new research ininterval training that seems to displace his old steady pace concept.Healso covers stretching, strength training, diet and supplementation. Cooper is not really very strong on strength and his advice is probablybetter avoided in that area.

On supplementation, Cooper's prescriptionsseem to be safe if one is to overlook that a previous recommedation, takingextra beta carotene, has proven to be a problem for many people.

Thebook mostly comes off as a bunch of notes that were gathered together in ahurry. The case stories are pretty uninspiring. His introductory storyabout falling off a mountain bike seems to have no relevance to anything. And references to himself as "Super Doc" are, to say the least, irritating.

By inventing the concept of aerobics, Cooper has done theworld a service.Yes, the promise of aerobics has not been fulfilled inpractice, but Cooper's recommendations are better than nothing, which ispretty much what they replaced. However, the Doc needs to move along andkeep up with the exercise research coming out of other countries, as TheUnited States is behind the learning curve in this area. His intentionsare good, but he either has to teach this dog to hunt or turn the questover to a hungrier author.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, well documented book on fitness and nutrution

5-0 out of 5 stars Energizing and insightful...a great read for every age
I thought this book was fantastic. I couldn't put it down. The research was well documented. There are side bar research highlights that relate to everyone and it really hit home. If you truly believe that you can solve90% of your medical and social issues without medicine, this book will giveyou great insight into how. As a kickboxing instructor, I have recommendedthis to all my classes. Good for all ages, even me at 29!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Well researched but poorly presented.Disjointed.Awful flow. No new insights. The takeaways or "aha's" were hard to find. Living in Dallas, Dr. Coopers reputation is unsurpassed. His research center isdeserving of this reputation. However, his most recent books and healthclub facility fall far short of his medical expertise. ...
