"You ready, kid?"

Rob smiled. "I was ready when I crawled out of the rack this morning."

The guard has definitely changed. Talented but brash young stars like Rocket Rob wilder are flexing some muscle on the super speedways. The message? If you can't hand on to first place...step aside. But no way are the wily and track-trained veterans ready to concede defeat and drive off to greener pastures. No sire. These young lions have a fight on their hands.

In stock car racing, knowing how to win is not just tough talk and a pretty smile. It's not just the checkered flag either. Or the prize money and the endorsements. It's not the fame. Or the thousands of cheering fans chanting your name.

It's the thrill. And without the thrill, you might as well be dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book in the Rolling Thunder series!!
This book is another fine one in the Rolling Thunder series. It follows young "Rocket" Rob Wilder as he makes his first Winston Cup start after success in the Busch Grand National series, and also his first attempt to start the Daytona 500.

Rob Wilder is a young man who lives to race."You ready, kid?"Rob smiled, "I was ready when I crawled out of the rack this morning."

I enjoyed this book every bit as much as the others.I see a bit of Jeff Gordon's influence on Rob's character in the book, as Rob is a clean-cut, clean-living young man who has a beautiful girlfriend, Christy.Christy's older sister, Michelle, is the marketing rep for Rob's sponsor, Ensoft, a software house.But... could Michelle also have taken a liking to the brash young driver, more than a professional interest?

In the race to glory, only one man can finish first...

For Jodell Lee, it's been an exciting, dizzying climb to the top of the stock car racing circuit. Gone are the days of racing round flat dirt ovals on Sunday afternoons. Stock car racing is big business now. Superspeedways have replaced the dirt tracks. Tens of thousands of fans pack the speedways for every race to watch the likes of Lee Petty, Junior Johnson, Fireball Roberts-and Jodell Lee-thunder around the steep-banked tracks of Darlington and Daytona and Charlotte.

But it isn't just the business that's changed. So has Jodell. He now has a wife and a child, and also a sponsor. And they're all depending on him to win-expecting him to win.

Is the pressure of always having to finish first beginning to take a toll on Jodell? A fiery crash could end his career...in Race to Glory-the exciting sequel to White Lightning and Road to Daytona.

5-0 out of 5 stars FULL THROTTLE READING
Easy on the wallet, and easy on the ears, dh Audio continuously offers high excitement stories at economical prices.

Stock car racing is the theme of this dynamite tale.Ace driver Jodell Lee is feeling pressure as his family and sponsor not only expect him to win but are depending upon him to be victorious.

The fun of whipping around a ragtag oval is gone - it's big business now.

An inferno-like crash could be the end or a beginning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Darker, but still fun
What the authors promise is true: this is a darker, more introspective tale.By flashing forward to Jodell's life today, they manage to foreshadow the tragedies without burdening their characters with anoverwhelming sense of dread or foreboding.

Despite the tragiccircumstances in this installment, though, readers should still findeverything they enjoyed about the first two books.Jodell is still theoptimistic young driver who can't dream of ever giving up racing. Catherine, now his wife, still offers her unflagging love and supportwithout complaint.Joe still rates chasing women a close second afterworking on Jodell's car, but he's still there when he's needed (althoughthere are hints this time around that Jodell may insist that Joe decidemore clearly where his priorities are). And Bubba is still eatingeverything he can get his hands on.

While this book shifts some of thefocus onto some of the more serious concerns of the team--finding asponsor, balancing family responsibilities with the racing life, and thever real dangers of the sport--the authors don't give us any shortage ofaction. The racing scenes are every bit as exciting as in the previous twobooks.

While the Rolling Thunder books may not present a searing insightinto the human condition, they're fun, exciting, and action-packed.That'swhat I'm looking for when I pick one up.When I read one, the authors makeme keep turning the pages, wanting to see what happens next. When I finishone, I want to go immediately on to the next one. What more could anyoneask from a stock car racing series?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent stock car racing book by Wright and Keith
The third book in the Rolling Thunder series, "Race to Glory", continues the fine characters and storytelling of the first two books.

This book is written with a slight difference, with flashbacksfrom the past intertwined with the current happenings in the life of JodellBob Lee, now a stock car team owner reliving his life spent in the"race to glory".

I highly recommend this book for any stock carracing fan.It provides a behind-the-scenes look at the roots of Americanstock car racing. ... Read more

Every dream has a price. Is Jodell willing to pay?

Stock car racing sure has changed since the dirt track days. The speedways are bigger, and the stakes even higher. The country has changed, too. It seems like nothing is as simple as it used to be. Vietnam. Civil rights. Demonstrations in the streets.

But it's been a great ride for Jodell Lee. He is happily married with two great kids, and he's been able to make a pretty good living doing what he loves: racing stock cars. Jodell is on the verge of breaking into the ranks of the racing elite. Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, and Buddy Baker. Only one thing stands in his way: the new superspeedway at Talladega.

With its high banks and broad straightaways, Talladega will be the fastest racing facility in the world. It will take speeds of almost 200 mph just to qualify!

Jodell has to decide. Is the dream of being the best worth the risk?

4-0 out of 5 stars Rolling Thunder
DH audio has an interesting audio series, Rolling Thunder, regarding stockcar racing in the 1960's. This four-volume audio series (White Lightning,Road to Daytona, Race to Glory, On to Talladega, (all three-hourabridgements) narrated by Michael Skinner, brings the listener right intothe pit. These audios have an historical background and well as thefictional one in these tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff...especially the twist ending!
I have to admit I bought this book at a grocery store. The cover caught my attention and now I see there are others I have to order.Great, historically accurate book about racing.Surprised the publisher didn'tmake the author put in all the silly stuff most stories about NASCAR have. Or make them be negative about racing.Been a fan for thirty years andthis is the way it is...good and bad!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rolling Thunder:On To Talledega
I Think this book is a great sequal to the Rolling Thunder series. It depicts the action of a true racer, when Jodell is forced to let his cheif wrench in the cockpit of his car after a serios wreck at the new talledegatrack in Alabama.I find that the book follows history very wellinterluding a ficitional chacter with the likes of Richard Petty, DavidPearson, Tiny Lund and other NASCAR legends.I would suggest this book toanyone who is interested in learning the roots of stock car racing to buythis book and any of the other Rolling Thunder books.I can't wait for #5to come out. ... “Every WayFarer has a story.
Every traveler tells a tale.
And in this life...
you have to make a name for yourself.”

“Out of the Wasteland” (Episode 1 of Racing History)

A consummate survivor rises from the slums of Mars. As a boy, Diego Lee immerses himself in role-playing games and dreams of a life among starhoppers, the living components of a vast corporate-controlled transportation industry that keeps the Stellar Union together. He spends much of his time in a makeshift workshop using pirated electricity to do self-taught mechanical work. Mistakes made as a teenager will haunt him for the rest of his life: theft, violence, and murder characterize his involvement with a local street gang -- and foreshadow things to come.

Racing History is an ambitious, five-volume sci-fi series that proudly flaunts its appreciation for pop culture: music, film, comics, television, videogames, and yes literature of all kinds. In her episodic series, the author dares to challenge many of today’s boundaries in science fiction. This is the full story of a singular moment in history, not just Earth history or human history but the story of everybody — and the how and why that make all the difference. One person can change the world, and the right people can make history. Sometimes silly, sometimes scary, alternately tragic and triumphant, but never boring, this is epic space-punk: space opera with a cyberpunk attitude and a touch of film noir.

This episode is the first of the series as well as the first episode in Volume 1: METEORIC.Readers can buy the episodes separately or collected in volume form. ... Read more

The tracks are faster. The cars, too. But the hunger for speed-and the hunt for the checkered flag-hasn't changed.

Jodell Bob Lee has long since retired from driving, but the love of the sport is still like a fire in his belly. When he spots a talented young driver he can't help remembering his own glory days. It's as if he is thirty years younger and racing the dirt tracks of Tennessee all over again. Jodell has an idea: his old friend and former "wrench," Billy Winton, has put together a racing team, but so far wins have been hard to come by. Billy is looking for a driver who can do more than just chase the checkered flag. He needs a young gun who can tame the superspeedways and take the flag. A new partnership is born. But the Kid has a few obstacles in the way, namely Dale Earnhart, Jr., Adam Petty, Casey Atwood, and the other young guns who are clearly stock car racing's next wave of stars. It's a new generation of drivers, but the prize is the same: the checkered flag!

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC READ!!!Review of entire series
I just finished book 8 and have read every book in this series. My first recommendation is that, with the exception of the 1st book, none of these novels should be read by itself.Bite the bullet and buy all 8 books from AMAZON.COM, if you are a NASCAR fan you won't regret it.
The first 4 books in this series deal with NASCAR's formative years when a former moonshine runner attempts to trade one fast-paced high-risk career for another. All four are excellent reads, although at times the attempts to place this fictional race team into established racing history are forced. Most NASCAR fans are familiar with the events and results surrounding the first Daytona and Talledega races, for example. For the most part, though, the authors do an admirable job of placing the Lee Racing team smack in the middle of these formative years without straying too far from the historical facts.
Upon starting Book 5, I was a little disappointed to discover that the authors had fast forwarded nearly 40 years to present day racing. However, by the midway point of that book, I became as interested in the lives of Rob Wilder and his contemporaries as I had been in Jodell, Bubba, and the rest of the Lee Racing clan. The older men, however, remain extremely active in the sport as car owners and senior mechanics.
In summary, all 8 of the books are well written and very easy to read.My only complaint is I WANT MORE!!!There are many story lines that can be followed up on and I can only hope that the authors continue to crank out more volumes!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rolling Thunder: On The Throttle
All the books in this series are wonderful to read. It is a very clean language book, one where the naughtiest word is "Shoot". This one brings a sad, bittersweet smile to the face of most fans of stock car racing. I would recommend this book with only one small reservation, there are a number of small inside jokes, that only a true fan of NASCAR racing is going to understand. But overall it is an enjoyable read for any racing fan. ... Read more

Racing History 3: Anomalous
Every WayFarer has a story.Every traveler tells a tale.
And in this life… you have to make a name for yourself.

Space exploration isn’t about wandering around looking at empty space; it’s about investigating the things you find in that vacuum. What happens when what you find has been expecting you all along? If you’re Diego Lee, you don’t believe it — not at first. He has a hard enough time believing that he’s some kind of weird telekinetic whose psionic powers only work on machines... that he spent the forgotten five-year period of his life as first a helpless victim, then a ruthless hired killer... that his own psyche is both his biggest enemy and his most powerful asset. The only thing he’s sure of these days is that he has a lot of karmic baggage to unload and an indefinite time in which to do so. At least the road is clear, with an old Enemy back from the past and ready to subjugate every living being in the Stellar Union. But it isn’t patriotism that motivates nostromo Diego (even if something of the sort seems to be driving his best friend Razzle) so much as the need to make something of himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A CYOA masterpiece!
One of R. A. Montgomery's most sophisticated and bleak works, Last Run takes the reader inside a murky and sinister conspiracy. The protagonist is more richly detailed than most "you" characters, the setting (the Italian Dolomites) is interesting, and the endings, while largely unhappy, are dramatically satisfying.A must-read for all CYOA lovers.

The biennial Around Alone yacht race (now known as the 5-Oceans Challenge) is the most thrilling adventure in the world for the sailors passionate enough to undertake it. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for yacht racers
This is the most brilliant book I have read detailing an account of offshore single-handed racing. I couldn't put it down. The book flows from one event to the next and fills the reader with the details experienced and lessons learnt along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars The riveting story of a fast-paced, around-the-world race
Sea Of Dreams: Racing Alone Around The World In A Small Boat, by Adam Mayers is the riveting story of a fast-paced, around-the-world race for the "Around Alone" yacht race. Derek Hatfield in his yacht "Spirit of Canada" raced against twelve others around the world, beginning in New York Harbor, with stops in England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Brazil, and finally ending in Newport, Rhode Island. Sea Of Dreams is an amazing tale and very highly recommended reading, especially for anyone in search of a gripping and nautically inclined true-life story of a fearless pursuit of a dangerous race on the high seas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sea of Dreams vs Godforsaken Sea

Derek Lundy's Godforsaken Sea which was about the 96 Vendee was gripping and so is this one about the 02 Around Alone when the Cdn. Derek Hatfield was rolled over at the Horn and Brad Van Liew who lives in Charleston set new speed records for the race. His race was just as amazing. The other American guy Tim Kent was also a great story, getting stronger and stronger as the race went on. ... Read more
