The player must return the ball before it hits the ground a third time. The wheelchair is part of the body and all applicable ITF Rules which apply to a player's body shall apply to the wheelchair. I. The Competitive Wheelchair Tennis Player a. In order to be eligible to compete in sanctioned ITF wheelchair tennis tournaments and the paralympic games, a player must have a medically diagnosed permanent mobility-related physical disability. This permanent physical disability must result in a substantial or total loss of function in one or more lower extremities. If, as a result of these functional limitations, the player is unable to play competitive able-bodied tennis (that is, having the mobility to cover the court with adequate speed), then the player is eligible to play competitive wheelchair tennis in sanctioned ITF wheelchair tennis tournaments. b. Examples of permanent disabilities that meet the eligibility criteria are: paralysis; amputation; radiological evidence of limb shortening; partial to full joint ankylosis or joint replacement. Such physical disabilities must consistently interfere with functional mobility. Findings such as soft tissue contracture, ligamentous instability, edema or disuse atrophy, or symptoms such as pain or numbness, without other eligibility criteria listed above shall not be considered a permanent physical disability.

The game of wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis, except that the wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball. In October 1988, the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation (IWTF) was founded as the organizing body for wheelchair tennis at international level with just 8 nations. Today The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the governing body and has 58 members nations but it is estimated that wheelchair tennis is played in over 80 countries around the world. The NEC Wheelchair Tennis tour comprising 118 events in 32 countries around the world. With international rankings and prize money, the sport has clearly elevated itself to another level. The Cheshire Oaks Wheelchair Tennis Club was formed in July 1998. The main aims and objectives of the club is to promote the development of this fast growing sport, from grass-roots to competitive level. Many of them are big international events. Satellite tournaments rank among the smaller events. Amersfoort ranks in the highest category of the Championship Series. As a result, the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation (IWTF) was established in 1988. Its purpose was to manage, promote and develop wheelchair tennis on a global scale. All open league and A-league players who enter in at least two certified championships earn points. The ranking list is updated every week. In the men's ranking, the eight best results count. In the women's ranking list the six best results count and in the quads competition the five best results. The players heading the ranking lists at the end of the year may call themselves ITF Wheelchair Tennis World Champions. The NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters is the last opportunity to gain points for the ranking lists.

This is a question that every wheelchair tennis player has heard at one time or another. The only difference in the rules between wheelchair tennis and regular tennis is that wheelchair players can let the ball bounce twice if they need to (only the first bounce needs to be in). But any wheelchair player will tell you that it goes way beyond that. The added complexities that come with having to do everything with their hands and arms makes this game a whole new sport. One of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world with over 3000 players worldwide, wheelchair tennis stands out among wheelchair sports in that it lets able-bodied and disabled players play against each other on the same court. No longer do all of the participants need to be in a wheelchair like most other wheelchair sports. A disabled player can play against an able-bodied player, or even with an able-bodied player in a format called up/down doubles. This format lets families and friends play tennis together and helps break down some of the stereotypes and barriers that often limit interaction between the wheelchair bound and the upright world.

Extractions: Tournament Results INDEX OTTAWA... Competition at the Capital Slam Wheelchair Tennis Championships came to a close Sunday evening at the Ottawa Athletic Club. The two day event ran from March 21/22. The event was co-hosted by the Ottawa Athletic Club and the National Capital Wheelchair Tennis Association. Many of the top players in Canada competed in 2 divisions; Open and B. Competition wrapped up Sunday with an exciting finals' match in Open Division action between Mario Peron of Montreal - #3 in Canada and Claude Brunet of Quebec City - #5 in Canada. Peron, a member of the 1996 Canadian Paralympic Tennis Team, was favoured to win the match and did so in dominating fashion with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Local favourite Jeff McBride (Aylmer) lost to the finalist Brunet in the semi-finals 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a hard fought match involving many deuce games. McBride ranked 11th nationally, played another hard 3 set match against Simard of Quebec for third place, won by Simard 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.

The camp is open to players of all levels and ability, as well as coaches wishing to learn methods of teaching wheelchair tennis. The camp is taught by world- class wheelchair tennis players and covers beginner to advanced lessons. Extractions: A wheelchair tennis demonstration will be on show at The Abbey Sports Centre in Berinsfield as part of an afternoon of free sports activities for adults with physical disabilities between 1pm - 4pm on Sunday 8 September 2002. The event is being organised by Ryder Cheshire Volunteers, South Oxfordshire District Council and The Abbey Sports Centre, and the activities are aimed at any adult with a physical disability that wishes to try a new sport, or simply come along to see what's on offer. Activities include bowls, boccia, archery, trampolining, swimming, wheelchair basketball and the not to be missed wheelchair tennis demonstration by Kay Froshaw, ranked number 17 in the world and Mark Bullock, the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Development Officer. Carole Heath-Whyte, Cabinet Member for Recreation, says: "The afternoon will raise awareness of the variety of sporting activities open to people with physical disabilities and hopefully provide an opportunity to set up regular sessions or new clubs. It is also a chance to meet new people and gain some independence. I wish the day every success." Theo Johnson of Ryder Cheshire Volunteers hopes that the event will encourage adults with physical disabilities to take up a sporting interest.
