The moves one can pull on a skimboard are a blend of many other board sports, including wave riding like surfing, shove-its and varials like skateboarding and high-flying aerials like windsurfing. In fact, skimmers were photographed puposely catching air earlier than surfers. Kyle Olson . pic - Gretchen Cardoso Competitions are held world-wide with corporate sponsors supporting the sport. Prize purses have reached $10,000 and are sure to rise with the sports growth. Hot spots for wave skimming are Portugal, Brazil, Japan, Chile, Cabo San Lucas - Mexico and of course the USA. Both of the Florida coasts are packed with skimmers, Laguna Beach, CA is known as the birthplace of modern day skimming with most of the worlds best residing there and Hawaii where skimming is thought to be evolved from. The earliest photograph of skimboarding dates back to 1919 at Waikiki Beach. Many Hawaiian's believe it goes back hundreds of years before that, using a Paipo Board which is similar to a modern day bodyboard. Micah McCarty . pic - Gretchen Cardoso If you are into board sports and have not tried it yet you are missing out. Boards are hand made, similar to surfboards, and are available around the world in surf shops or on the net. They range from $50 to $350. The inexpensive boards are ok to learn the basics on but lose their appeal soon after. It's best to start off with a mid-level or above skimboard as they are just as easy to learn on and when you are ready you can ride the waves with it.

Extractions: Skimboarding Publication Date: July 2000 Skimboarding is a sport similar to surfing, however, riders don't ride the waves inshore as surfers do. The sport of skimboarding takes place on a beach where the waves usually crash on the shore. The skimboarder stands about twenty feet from the ocean (where the wet and dry sand meet) with skimboard in hand and waits for a wave. When they see a wave they run towards it with their skimboard still in hand. Upon reaching the wet sand they drop the board and jump onto it as quickly as possible. Once on the board, the skimmer must remain as stable as possible and prepare to make the transition to the ocean. The skimmer then (hopefully) glides out into the ocean toward the oncoming wave, banks off of it, and rides it back into shore. Beginning skimboarders usually just ride on the sand. Skimboarding has a rich history that dates back to the late 1920's when Laguna Beach lifeguards used to skimboard on pieces of wood. Although people still skimboard on wood skimboards throughout the world, the sport has evolved immensely. In the early 1960's there was a group of guys who would skimboard at Victoria Beach. Their boards were sometimes referred to as "double enders" because of their shape. The boards were rounded at both ends but one end had a larger radius, which was the nose of the board. Even in these early days of skimming people were pushing the limits by venturing out into the waves. Some of the basic moves were speed runs and fly aways with the occasional top turn to make a big spray.
Skimboarding Tricks & Terminology skimboarding Tricks Terminology. In skimboarding, the board usually won'twobble but will just fly out from under you if you are going too fast. http://extremz.com/main/archive/water/skimtrickjul00.htm
Extractions: Publication Date: July 2000 Aerial - Like in surfing, this move is performed when the skimboarder catches air off a wave and lands back on the face of the wave. Also described as catching air. Example: Hey Bill, that was a nice air (or aerial). Backside - Backside refers to situations where the skimboarder's back is oriented toward the wave/ocean. Barrel - A skimmer catches a barrel or a tube ride when they get surrounded by the wave. Delamination - Occurs when the fiberglass loses its adhesion with the foam of a skimboard. This results in a much weaker skimboard if not repaired. They are recognizable by bubbles that will appear on the top or bottom of the board where the fiberglass has detached. If you have one you will be able to press down on the bubble and it will pop back up (a little) due to the fact that the glass has detached at that point. They range in size from about the size of a baseball to the size of a basketball (at which point your board will almost always break). Ding - A ding is a small "dent" in a skimboard caused by impact with some object. Some dings crack the resin and should be repaired to avoid water damage to the foam while other pressure dings do not crack the foam and are not very harmful assuming no delamination. Down The Line - This is a skimboarding move that results when a skimboarder rides out to the wave in one direction and, after turning off the wave, continues in the same direction proceeding "down the line."
