Polynesians have been surfing for hundreds of years, and it is possible that someone, somewhere, discovered skimming a long time ago. Modern skimboarding developed with the introduction of lightweight foam and fiberglass skimboards in the early 1970's. Tex Haines is universally recognised as the father of modern skimboarding. His company, Victoria Skimboards of Laguna Beach, California, makes thousands skimboards a year. Mr. Haines estimates world skimboard production to be about 40,000 boards a year, and the number of skimboarders at about one million. (Figures as of 2000.) Skimboarding is popular in the USA, Canada, Japan, France, Portugal and Hawaii. In Australia, the sport enjoyed a surge of popularity in the late 1960's and early 1970's, but modern-style skimboarding remains largely unknown in this country. Skimboards were known as "skiffleboards" in some states and as "skidboards" around Sydney and in New Zealand.

The size board you should choose though, is all based on personal preference and where you ride. If you ride a beach where the waves are hard to reach, you may want a larger board than is recommended. If you can run really fast, you may be able to make a small board work, and vice versa. Lots of lots of people ride boards that are technically too big or too small for them. You need to evaluate your skills, local conditions, and style to determine what size board you should ride.

Extractions: SKIMBOARDING Skimboarding is a simple and inexpensive sport. All you need is a skimboard and a flat sandy beach. You don't have to be mega fit, or have years of experience, just about anyone can do this!! Simply put, you throw your skimboard in front of you and then jump onboard and ride it. Some people have compared it to beach-surfing on a tea tray! Skimboards can come in different shapes and sizes, but the ones that we have had the most fun with, have been circular. Our skimboards are about 70cm across, 4cm thick and made of wood. They are treated with some sort of waterproofing to stop them falling apart once wet. I am more into the fun side than the manufacturing, so can't tell you exactly what it is. We got our skimboard from Surf Wax. Once you have got your skimboard, you need to find a fairly flat sandy beach. The reason for a flat beach is because you only need a couple of centimetres of water and a flat beach means that you will have a larger area to play on than a steep sloping one. The larger the area, the greater the distance you can travel. We normally skim after a days surfing, when the tide is going back out.

This site is mainly focused on skimboarding on the sand. Really you don't skim on the sand, the board slides on a thin film of water covering the sand. If you live near an ocean then you can do this on the beach as the waves come in. If you don't live near a beach you can still skim. Try rivers, streams, flooded fields, large puddles, tarps, etc. Anyplace you can find a thin film of water. How thin does it need to be? The laws of physics say that the thinner the film of water, the farther you will go. But if it's too thin the board will stick to the sand and then you'll be introduced to two more laws of physics; Inertia and gravity. Lino Curado - Photo: Bill Moore Though the hybrid sport looks most like surfing, the range of moves which can be made are much higher. What's more, you don't need huge surf to skim. In appearances, the skimboard is vastly different to its better-known relation. It is about half the length, half the thickness and slightly wider than a surfboard. Also, skimboards have no fins, making them much less stable and difficult to control, allowing for tricks which cannot be done on a surfboard. To skimboard, you stand about 6m/20ft from the ocean, on a beach where the waves are crashing directly on the shore. On spotting a decent wave, you run towards it and upon reaching the wet sand, drop your board and jump on as quickly as possible. You must then remain as stable as possible and prepare to make the transition to the ocean. If you stay on the board, you can glide into the ocean toward the oncoming wave, bank off it and ride it back to shore.
