Extractions: Ski Orienteering is a well developed sport in Europe and has spread to other countries; it was introduced to Australia on a structured basis in 1994. Australian skiers have taken part in major overseas events, both participant and competitive, including the world championships in Norway 1996 and Austria 1998. Ski-O was a demonstration sport at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, with the aim of inclusion in the official programme from 2002 in Salt Lake City, USA. What is Ski Orienteering? The main idea is to ski to controls marked on your map, in correct order. All of the controls are on tracks or on mapped features off-track and accessible on skis. “Isn’t it very easy to ski along tracks made by other ski orienteers who started before you?” Well, it’s not as easy as you might think… It may seem that ski orienteering is very simple, you only have to ski from one control to another. However, there are usually different possible routes between controls. So, the idea is to select the best route, considering: Length of the route Track classification:

IOF NEWS STRATEGY FOR SKI ORIENTEERING. From 2001 onwards, the World Cup in ski orienteeringwill again be organised only every two years instead of every year. http://orienteering.ie/tio/93/IOF.htm
Extractions: IOF NEWS MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FROM COLOMBIA APPROVED At its recent meeting in Chaumontel, France, the IOF Council approved the application for associate membership from Colombia. The decision is to be ratified by the 2000 IOF General Assembly. At the 1998 Congress in Portugal, three countries, i.e. India, Moldova and Chinese Taipei were admitted to membership, thus increasing the number of members from 48 to 51. Since then, Uruguay, Venezuela, Greece and Jamaica have joined the IOF. Colombia included, the IOF family now counts 56 members. This means that the membership has increased by some 17 % in two years. IOF JOINS WORLDSPORT.COM Following up on the discussion held at its previous meeting, Council deliberated on the future route to take with regard to the IOF Internet web site. It was agreed that the issue of what to do with the site had largely become a question of marketing the sport. Digital TV and the Web are coalescing fast and will together provide the TV of the future. Having deliberated on the various options, Council decided to enter into a cooperation agreement with WorldSport Networks Limited. Joining this multi-sports web site was believed to provide the IOF with the best available possibilities for marketing and raising the profile of orienteering. WorldSport Networks is the media partner of GAISF (The General Association of International Sports Federations). The aim is to promote each GAISF member's sport, facilitate increased communication and information sharing and develop harmonised systems for cooperation across the world's sporting community.
Ski Orienteering Ski Orienteering News. by Carol Moran. ESG SkiO Results. Clubs around thestate have helped to set up a calendar of ski orienteering qualifiers. http://members.aol.com/RLShadow/SKIO2.HTM
Extractions: ESG Ski-O Results As the days shorten and get cooler, many people bemoan the loss of summer. Those of us involved with nordic skiing however, look ahead and anticipate the coming of winter. Clubs around the state have helped to set up a calendar of ski orienteering qualifiers. Because the Empire State Games will be earlier than usual, there are fewer weekends available for qualifying, so it is important for competitors to plan ahead, to insure that they can get to the necessary races. Last year we used a points list system to rank and qualify competitors. We will continue to do this again this year, but we will be using a different system. Points will be awarded to all finishers, ranging from 10 points for first place to one point for those in sixth place and beyond. It is felt that this system will provide better competitive incentives, as well as encouraging more participation. Phil Hawkes-Teeter will be compiling the list this year and point totals will be maintained and posted to the Empire Orienteering Club site. Questions regarding the points list may be directed to him at philht@poboxes.com or 518-872-1993. Race results should be sent promptly to him at PO Box 8, Berne, NY 12023, and no later than February 10th.

Extractions: 5th Annual Frisco Ski Orienteering Event Frisco Nordic Center March 4, 2000 What a beautiful cloudless day we had. The only complaints I had were about what wax to use. Lots of shortcuts between the groomed trails. Elis learned that his new map holder wasn't waterproof so after a few spills the ink on the map started to fade. That is one problem of making maps on an ink jet printer. We did have zip lock bags with strings attached, which worked reasonably well. Maps were pre-printed with codes on the map. Our meet crew included all the World Masters medal winners from the United States. Probably the oldest group ever to run a meet also. Mil took care of start and finish timing while George Bramhall handled registration. Margareta and Betty assisted with instruction. Beatrice and Margareta helped pick up controls. Thanks to all. Sharon designed the courses and then left for Bulgaria and Siberia to race in the World Masters Ski-O Championships and the World Ski-O Championships. Many thanks to the staff at the Frisco Nordic Center for making this wonderful facility available to us for the fifth year in a row. It is a pity that more club members are not skiers. The center gives us a great deal on ski passes making overall cost less than a daily pass. Results Long Course 6.7 km

Bluedome Ski Orienteering Ski orienteering is a crosscountry endurance wintersport. Similar to the orienteering disciplines practised in http://www.bluedome.co.uk/Orienteering/skiorient.html
Extractions: Ski Orienteering Ski orienteering is a cross-country endurance winter sport. Similar to the orienteering disciplines practised in the summer season, ski orienteering requires an extremely high level of both physical and mental fitness. An elite level ski-orienteer needs excellent skiing and map reading skills - and the ability to combine those two. The athlete has to take hundreds of route choice decisions at high speed during every race. The prepared ski tracks are of various quality. Throughout the competition the ski orienteer has to make decisions about which route is the fastest between the controls. The route choice is made on the basis of the quality of the ski tracks, gradient and distance, all of which can be read from the map.

For Eduard Khrennikov it is not a new situation. Natalia Tomilova is not at all new to being amongst the best, but to be best of all is new for her. "I have been aiming for first place, but when I achieved it, it didn't seem so special," she says. Natalia is also a full time ski orienteer. She is from Perm and still lives there. Perm is about 600 kilometres from Kyshtym, venue for the final races in this year's World Cup. She plans to go on at top level as long it is enjoyable to do so. In her training Tomilova takes part in many other sports: she is a very good foot orienteer too.
