The beauty was at times overwhelming. Only on the rails for a few minutes and I was treated with the sight of Buck Pond (left). Below, the bridge over the River Beaver. I carried my sleeping bag, clothes for any kind of weather, food, toiletries, tools, camera, binoculars, three bottles of water and two bottles of my favorite beer. The Stillwater Resevoir. Here I folded the rig to ride throught the settlement of Beaver River by road, fearing a possible unwelcome for railbikers. Here come Sudjai and Dick Bentley to greet me mid-ride. Fahrradfahrer nutzen alte Schienen zum "Railbiking", einem Schmalspur-Sport, der in Frankreich und Schweden viele Anhänger hat, in Deutschland jedoch kaum bekannt ist. Als die ersten Eisenbahnen gebaut wurden, beförderte man Ingenieure und Arbeiter mit Draisinen über kürzere Strecken. Diese Geräte wurden von zwei Arbeitern mit einem Hebel bedient. Später wurden die schwerfälligen Draisinen durch leichtere, fußbetriebenen Vehikel ersetzt, die schon viele Elemente eines Fahrrades aufwiesen. Im Jahr 1869 erfanden Minen- und Telegrafenarbeiter den schienentaugliche Drahtesel und ließen ihn sich patentieren. Normales Fahrrad mit Führung Heute werden die alten Eisenbahnwege von Enthusiasten genutzt, um überfüllten Radwegen und Straßen auszuweichen. Auf den Gleisen ist der Fahrer garantiert ungestört - natürlich vorausgesetzt, die Strecke ist tatsächlich stillgelegt. Ein modernes Railbike ist ein normales Fahrrad, welches vorne mit einer Reifenführung ausgestattet ist, welche die Räder auf der Schiene hält. Ein Ausläufer zum anderen Gleis stützt das Rad seitlich ab. Allein Gestrüpp und Büsche am Gleisrand können dem Radler zur Qual werden und ihn unsanft aus der Spur befördern. Bei größeren Geschwindigkeiten kommt eine weitere Gefahr dazu: Gleise sind nicht so schnurgerade und parallel wie sie aussehen. Unregelmäßigkeiten bringen den Fahrradfahrer schnell aus dem Gleichgewicht. Wenn ein Railbike erst einmal ins Schlingern gerät, endet der Radausflug meistens abrupt im Graben.

"Good night, honey- and oh, by the way- please set the alarm for 5 a.m. there's the "Y2K metric 2000" going on this weekend, and I need to be there with the others by seven!" Too tired and sleepy to offer resistance to such a request, I set the alarm- on the WEEKEND, no less- and.. It's 5 a.m.! UGH. I am happy that cyclists have so many neat and interesting rides to choose from, and participate in. They are indeed great exercise. However, when my spouse returns from these adventures, he resembles something our two cats have found outside and decided to play with indoors. "How was the ride?" I cheerfully offer. Smiling, with beads of less-than-fragrant perspiration still lingering on his cycling outfit, my spouse replies "Oh, it was GREAT! Three people showed up, only one flat tire and if it wasn't for the fact that I bonked twice and had to pepper-spray a Chihuahua, it would have been perfect!" He then collapses with great drama, on the foot of our bed. I am always so happy to see that he has enjoyed himself so much. It never ceases to amaze me, that with all the club-sponsored rides we have, that more folks do not participate in them. They seem to have a cycling gene in their biological makeup, which automatically overrides all thought processes that tell them "Hey, it's the weekend and I really need to get caught up on some much-needed sleep!" I also know, that if I were a cyclist (and I very much respect those of you who are), I would wait until Spring or Summer, when at least daylight is abundant in those early-morning hours.

Recently, I've been trying to get into two new hobbies - railbiking and train horn collecting. Railbiking is when you retrofit a bicycle to ride along railroad tracks. We're still in the planning stages of building the bike, though. And as far as train horn collecting is concerned, I'm brand new, and seem to learn new things every day from the great folks at and TrainHorns . The hobby involves preserving horns so that people will continue to be able to hear them after railroads stop using them.

Not knowing much about popular Japanese culture I was lost, but fortunately Gary is well versed and offers the following explaination. Some insights/guesses: This is a Kikkoman commercial. Kikkoman is the leading producer of soy sauce, like the Heinz of Ketchup. I agree, the Kikkoman products really do taste better and set the standard for everyone else. Kikoman also produces other sauces, so the fish head is probably a fish(-flavored soy) sauce, or maybe it's just a fish-head dispenser for regular soy-sauce?
