A s seen on KING-TV's Northwest Backroads, Sunday April 23, 2000 A Brief History of Railbiking R esearch shows that railbiking has been around nearly as long as railroads and bicycles. A railbike patent in the U.S. Patent Office database is dated 1869. Scores of patents for railbike systems were filed between 1880 and 1920 around the world. R ailbikes were once used by railroad companies for track checking, moving workers at work sites as well as going for assistance when the locomotives broke down. Telegraph companies also used railbikes to maintain telegraph lines that often followed railways. In the Midwest and other regions with sufficient winds, workers using railbikes sometimes put up sails to power them along the tracks. L ike its contemporary, the bicycle, railbike design went into decline with the advent of the internal combustion engine and the automobile. A few independently minded designers and tinkerers kept the concept alive for the last 90 years and today there is a resurgence of interest in railbiking.

Extractions: Culture Watch Question of the Week ... Host's View Here's a new one for the athletically inclined tourist: in the foothills of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State, you can now literally ride the rails through forests and valleys by pumping the pedals of a jerry-rigged bicycle. It travels, like a rollercoaster car down OR like a highwire act, on top of the tracks. It's called "railbiking." The Savvy Traveler's Tom Banse was game and sent these impressions. Ride the Rails by Bike by Tom Banse Listen with RealAudio Need audio help? Okay, if you're like me always on the lookout for a new thrill then railbiking sounds just loopy enough to demand it be tried. But you're thinking, what about the trains? A good question, because as railbike entrepeneur Michael Rohde acknowledges, "One train can ruin your whole day." Michael: "The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad has two routes that they run. During the day, we can run groups on the opposite piece of rail that they're using. We're always in contact with the conductor and with the shop. We have cell phones, all kinds of things to make sure the communication is there." Rohde has handcrafted a fleet of railbikes by buying eight department store mountain bikes and bolting on guidewheels and outriggers. The front wheel rolls securely in place over one rail with the outrigger attached to the other. The safety lecture for newcomers like me is short.
New Railbike Book Review You're railbiking! While all of the riders share an obsession for railbiking, this unusual hobby means something different to each of them. http://www.glpbooks.com/oyb/OYB8/bikes/bikerail.html
Extractions: Imagine gliding along on ribbons of steel, through breathtaking open space, enjoying the pristine air, the abundant wildlife, and the silence. Your ride is as smooth as glass and there's no traffic. Your hands are free to take pictures or en joy your lunch. Your path is never steep. Where there's a hill, you go around it or through a tun nel. Where there's a river, you go over a bridge. Breath deeply relax, enjoy . . . A hundred years ago, dozens of patents were granted for various contraptions which adapted a common bicycle to ride on railroads. The 1908 Sears catalog offered a railbike attachment for $5.45. But this unique form of cycling never caught on, largely because no one wanted to share the rails with the trains which were far more numerous and active in those days. A new book called "RAILBIKE- Cycling On Abandoned Railroads," written by experienced railbiker Bob Mellin, provides an overview of the history, current status, and predicted future of cycling on the rails. Safety issues are discussed in detail and suggestions for exploring the vast network of abandoned rails are presented. A companion book entitled "RIGHT-OF-WAY - A Guide To Abandoned Railroads" is also available to guide in locating abandoned tracks. State-by-state maps identify abandoned rails and some of the history of the lines and the companies that operated them is included.

Extractions: Dinsdag 17 september 2002 B este Air-boy, Zaterdagmorgen, 08:00h stipt. Al de verwachtte Airboys waren paraat. Allemaal?

Extractions: Most of our guests are family groups, and many of them come back year after year. Some like to hike or bike. Most like to spend at least part of their time swimming in the lake; among them a few who I've rarely seen dry! Others prefer to fish, or canoe. Some folks we almost never see. They use their cabin as a home base, and spend most of their vacation searching out all the wonderful things to do throughout the Adirondacks, and beyond. And, more than a few simply want to lounge around, soaking up the mountain air, and enjoy their freedom from duty, worry, and the other 50 weeks of the year. No matter what your plans, we know you will love Mount Arab. When it comes to BOATING, CANOEING, or SWIMMING, you will not find at better place than our lake front . Immediately at hand, you will find a great canoe trip. Starting at our dock, paddle north about 1 mile to the end of the lake, to the outlet blocked by a small dam. Climb out of the canoe, lift it gently over the bridge above the dam, and launch it into the water on the other side. Paddle quietly along this stream as it winds through the bog ahead, keeping your eyes and ears open. You will find yourself in a wilderness that seems far removed from the paths of men. You may also portage your canoe over the carry about 1/2 mile from our dock into Mount Arab Lake, and explore there as well. If you have plans to go further afield, check out
