Extractions: Web posted at: 11:45 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Brian Cabell ATLANTA (CNN) It has been fewer than two weeks since the Summer Olympics ended and Atlantans bid farewell to distinguished athletes from all over the world. On Thursday, they will roll out the red carpet for another 3,500 distinguished athletes as the Paralympic Games get under way. If the running of the Paralympic torch is any measure, enthusiasm for the games for disabled athletes will rival that shown for the 10,700 Olympians. The bearers of the Paralympic torch have been warmly received. The torch was lit 10 days ago from the eternal flame at Martin Luther King's burial place in Atlanta, and traveled 1,000 miles. "Just as Dr. King taught us that the color of one's skin should not be the determinant of one's destiny, so too will the athletes in the Paralympics show that one's physical characteristics should not define the limits of one's potential," Andy Fleming, president of the Paralympic Games, said. The physical characteristics of the Paralympians may vary, but the participants from 127 nations are indisputably premier athletes.

Extractions: Olympic Factsheets Paralympics What are the Paralympic Games? They are the Olympic equivalent for the world's top athletes with disabilities. The Paralympic Games recognise the participants' athletic achievements rather than their disabilities. Athletes at the Paralympics include paraplegics, tetraplegics, amputees, blind and cerebral palsied individuals, "les-autres" and those with an intellectual disability. The Paralympics are held every four years, just after the Olympic Games and at the same venues. The name 'Paralympic' comes from the Latin PARA, meaning 'WITH". History of the Paralympic Games In 1944 the British Government set up a spinal injuries centre for ex-servicemen headed by Sir Ludwig Guttman at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. As part of their therapy, patients were introduced to a number of sports and in July, 1948 a sports competition involving patients from various rehabilitation centres took place. These were the first Stoke Mandeville Games. Three years later, competitors from Holland appeared at the Games and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. In 1976 Sir Ludwig succeeded in introducing the concept of the Winter Paralympics in which 30 nations now compete. When are the Paralympics?

Extractions: Fireworks highlighted the festivities as the 2000 Paralympics ended in Sydney. AP By Luba Vangelova, Special to CNNSI.com Eleven days ago, the 11th Paralympic Games began with a party. Sunday night they also ended with a party. But instead of the flash and noise of the opening ceremony, the two-hour closing ceremony relied more on Australians' trademark irreverent wit and also the high spirits of the athletes, their competitions now behind them. Fittingly for a sports festival that showcased ability rather than disability, the Turkmeni athlete who wowed the opening night crowds with his impromptu handstands opened tonight's party by dropping his crutches at one end of the infield and walking on his hands to a settee in the middle of the stadium. He pressed a remote control to set off fireworks all around him. The stadium screens showed a montage of highlights from the Paralympics as Australian singer Graeme Connors sang the sort of inspirational song that no Olympic or Paralympic ceremony can be without.
