World Pankration Championships WPF Executive Director Eric Pence conducts a pre- tournament seminar with some of the competitors. The world's best pankration fighters descended on Chicago on November 10 for the WPF World Pankration Championships. Hosted by Master Bob Schirmer at his All American Academy of Martial Arts in Cicero, Illinois, the tournament was the first open world pankration championship in modern times, allowing martial artists and athletes from all systems, styles and countries to compete for the first World Pankration Federation World Championship titles. WPF president Craig Smith called the tournament a major success, and an important step on the road to returning pankration to the Olympic Games. Athletes and officials agree. WPF AA-Interna- tional referees who traveled from Kansas City to officiate the tournament expressed pleasure at the atmosphere of the tournament, the quality of the competition and the hopitality of Schirmer and his staff. With the first World Pankration Championship completed, the road ahead looks exciting for pankration. As more and more martial artists and athletes discover the competitive challenge of this historic ultimate combat sport, the opportunities offered by pankration training and competition will be made available to an increasing number of competitors throughout the world. And as pankration competition increases, more and more competitors will be able to test their skills in the arena decribed by the motto of the World Pankration Federation;

Extractions: official site photos press labels ... tour dates Pankration has evolved almost to the extent that the title of their debut implies. From the wreckage of Kent/Akron Ohio area bands, guitarists Matt Slater and Fej, bassist Ben Wienand, and drummer Rob Boles decided they did not like college as much as playing in a band. They joined up to form Pankration, which is one of the oldest forms of wrestling. Pankration watched entirely too much wrestling on TV. They soon released their first 7" record on Donut Friends Records, run by Party of Helicopters guitar player and Harriet the Spy drummer Jamie Stillman. Although the first U.S. tour was a financial failure (the van needed two transmission replacements), the band continued to work and even won over a few crowds along the way. After the first tour in 1998, Pankration shifted noticeably toward a more metal-influenced sound. After two more tours and an intense writing session they recorded their second record, a split with the Knoxville hardcore darlings The Red Scare. What the record lacked in good production it made up for in powerful rhythm, harmonic guitar work and focused musical direction. "I saw Pankration live in late 2000 (with the ever-so energetic xRUINATIONx) and well... to be honest I don't think I moved one bit during their entire set, I was just so mesmerized! Highly skilled musicians dishing out epic compositions one after the other, total old school metal influence (Iced Earth, At The Gates), but never-theless reminding me of newer bands such as Zao and Cave-In (well at least their "Beyond Hypothermia" stuff!) And their sound was just so fat... one guy had the 5150 cranked up all the way and the other had a JCM 900 just as loud."

Extractions: A combination of wrestling and boxing already practised as sports by the ancient Greeks, Pankration was added to the Olympic Games in 648 B.C. In order to force their opponents to concede defeat, the Pankration artist uses punches, kicks, grabs, throws, joint-locks, and chokes. Ground fighting is a large part of training. Because of its early date, Pankration is considered by some authorities to be the first true martial art. Also, because Alexander the Great's armies carried the sport with them across the Alps into Asia, and because of the similarities of basic techniques, a number of authorities are of the opinion that the Asian martial arts were based on Pankration, though no other evidence exists to support this. Extractions: Wrestling Page.... under Construction OUTLINE... HERE... Pankration Gallery Pankration (Wrestling) The Greek race is certainly well-known for its athletic and military achievements in the PreChristian era. In truth, we must credit them for both the word "athlete" and the ideal it expresses. It was also the Greek soldier who would represent the standard for the rest of the world to follow for centuries. The contribution of the Greeks to the evolution of the martial arts, as we presently know them, is now certainly evident. Fighting systems that have originated in both Eastern and Western parts of the world may indeed be linked to this ancient combat form. Kicking was an essential part of pankration, especially rising kicks to the groin or stomach, and powerful leg sweeps meant to take an opponent off his feet. Kicks above the belt were used sparingly, with blows aimed to the head or face only when one's adversary was on the ground and too weakened to block or catch the attacker's foot. Due to this unique tactic alone, some combative experts credit pankration as the first comprehensive unarmed fighting system on record. Pankration bouts were extremely brutal and sometimes life-threatening to the competitors. Rules were minimal in number. In addition, there were no weight divisions and no time limits. The fighting arena or "ring" was no more than twelve to fourteen-feet square to encourage close-quarter action. Referees were armed with stout rods or switches to enforce the rules against biting and gouging. The rules, however, were often broken by some participants who, realizing they were outclassed by a heavier and stronger foe, would resort to such measures to escape being seriously maimed. The contest itself continued uninterrupted until one of the combatants either surrendered, suffered unconsciousness, or, of course, was killed.

What is not so familiar, with the exception of modern boxing and wrestling, is the long tradition of combat arts that have arisen here on European soil. Foremost amongst these is the ancient Hellenic (Greek) martial art of 'Pankration': pronounced variously as; 'Pan-kray-shun' or 'Pan-krat-ion' depending upon the Greek dialect. The name itself is derived from two Greek root words: Pan meaning all and Kratos meaning strength, power or force . Therefore, Pankration was a martial combat art that included the use of any and all forms of technique and power. The later developments of boxing and wrestling were taken from the Pankration art and distilled into sports. Beginnings: The historical origins of Pankration disappear back into the mists of time, back to the Heroic age of Greece and the times of Homers Trojan War period (around 1300 BC). In legend, its founder was the hero and demi-god Hercules ( Heracles ) or sometimes Theseus: the famous hero who slew the Minotaur - the half man half bull monster in the Labyrinth at the palace of Knossos on the island of Crete.

Steve is a 30 year member of the famous Chin-Woo Athletic Association becoming a life member of the Hong-Kong Chin Woo in 1987. The Chin Woo Athletic Association was founded in Shanghai in 1908 as a non-political school of martial arts, athletics, culture and education. "Chin-Woo" translates as 'Multi-Art' or 'All Arts' and has successfully established itself throughout the world as a leading light of cross cultural study, education, sport and martial arts . 'Pankration' means 'All Powers' or 'All Strengths' and was a Hellenic (Greek) martial art as far back as the 13th Century BC. By the 6th Century BC it was one of the leading events in the original Olympic games. Steve has founded the World Renaissance Pankration Academy (see Pankration pages and external links on this site) as a Western modeled 'Chin Woo' - a project to unite all martial arts and peoples of the world equally without discrimination, committed to athleticism, education and cross cultural studies. 'Renaissance' is in honor of the re-birth of Classical learning that signaled the end of the long cultural darkness between the fall of Greco- Roman civilization, and the end of the High Middle Ages in Europe. The World Renaissance Pankration Academy has affiliated branches in Europe, the United States and Australia. All achievements are recognized towards an individuals continued growth and development, from whatever field of constructive human endeavor. The aim is to instill the ideals of cosmopolitan humanism in ways understood by the Classical Greeks.
