Competing against approximately 30 other women in the 1999 competition, she was the first to cross the finish line of the mountains long, deep, zig-zagging cycling trail. "I was exhausted when I finished," she said. Mountain unicycling differs significantly from traditional unicycling, she says. In addition to the balancing ability and dexterity that regular unicycling demands, mountain unicycling requires sharp focus and learned endurance. "Theres a whole other awareness you have to have about the terrain, about where your pedals are," she said. All cyclists wear helmets, knee pads and wrist guards to protect themselves from the inevitable falls that occur. Even on her winning ride down Mount Snoqualmie, Young estimates that she fell about two or three times.

Eve Magazine - June 2002 Town Crier - November 2001 South China Morning Post - 26 August, 2001 I've seen people learn to cycle unaided in as little as 4 hours but those people are complete naturals. The people fastest to learn are usually the fearless kind who can already roller-blade, ski, windsurf etc but personally being a mere normal mortal with no other sporting skills to speak of and a complete wimp at these things, I didn't let go of the fence/rail/someone's hand until I had been riding for more than 20 hours spread over several months but most people learn faster. Of course, cycling roughly in a straight line unaided is one thing - being able to mount unaided and wield a hockey stick in such a way as to get a ball moving in the right direction takes a bit of patience.

Rough-Terrain Unicycling - 97.04 Article from Atlantic Monthly Magazine.Category Sports Cycling Unicycling mountain unicycling For almost a decade and a half, no matter the weather, Peck has gone mountain unicyclingnearly every day twice a day most weekends in and around Seward. http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/97apr/uni.htm
Extractions: W HY the red unicycle was left in the Seward, Alaska, dump and what inspired George Peck's wife, Carol, to bring it home are both unclear. "I'm a salvager and recycler," is all she will say. "She's a dump rat," Peck says. Carol put the unicycle in the garage, and Peck found it there. This was almost fourteen years ago. His life hasn't been the same since. "I glom on to things," Peck says. "He gets obsessed," Carol says. Peck taught himself to ride the red unicycle no books, no instructors. He practiced daily for more than a month before he could wobble up and down his driveway. Then he attempted to take the unicycle onto the roads. Riding a unicycle is as precarious as it looks the "cone of balance," as Peck calls it, is extraordinarily precise. A pebble can be enough to put you on your back. So can a patch of sand or a gust of wind or a crack in the pavement. This may be why the red cycle was tossed into the dump: Seward is possibly the worst spot on the planet in which to ride a unicycle. The place is all sand and gusts and cracks, not to mention ice and snow and logs and boulders and mountains. Peck learned to ride his unicycle under all conditions. He discovered how to make the cycle hop, and he honed the skill until he could pop over logs two feet in diameter. He figured out how to power through boulder fields, how to jump up and over picnic tables, how to turn in ankle-deep mud. He became skilled at riding in dried-out riverbeds, across frozen lakes, up mountain trails, and through wind-crusted snow. This is clearly not what unicycles were designed to do. When the red unicycle fell apart, Peck drove to Anchorage and bought a new one. When that broke, he ordered another. After a dozen more were destroyed, he began designing his own.

Norco Performance Bikes - Norco News unicyclist. Curious to see if others were riding trails, Kris entered mountain unicycling into an internet search engine. I was http://www.norco.com/reviews/rev_kholm.htm
Extractions: Reprinted from Bike, April 2000, Volume 7 "Hey, Are you the Unicycle Guy?" A young mountain biker asks Kris Holm a painfully obvious question as he pedals up a gravel road at the base of Grouse Mountain. "Yeah, youre the shit, man" another interjects before Kris can answer. "We were just watching you on North Shore Extreme III last night. You rock." "I think youre nuts! You wouldnt get me on that thing. Noooo way!" a third kid adds. Being the only mountain unicyclist in Vancouver, Kris is used to these types of comments. He politely answers questions from both seasoned riders and the curious public about his unusual choice of ride. "No, I am not crazy. Yes, it is difficult. Yes, I can ride it downhill". "People have such low expectations from unicycle riders," explains Kris. "They are shocked that you can actually ride it along the street, let alone down a trail. The concept of Shore Style riding on one wheel is inconceivable to most people." Kris is the worlds first sponsored, semi-pro mountain unicyclist and he has taken his pro mountain unicycle to places never before ridden on one wheel terrain that only a handful of the best mountain bikers would even consider riding.
Unicycle.UK.com - What Is Muni All around the world people found mountain unicycling independently, and it got manydifferent names consequently, rough terrain unicycling, mountain unicycling http://www.unicycle.uk.com/muni.asp
Extractions: What is Muni? When I went to Mammoth, California in 1987 for a friends wedding I was an avid mountain biker and had already been riding a unicycle for a few years. I had already converted my 24" Pashley unicycle to a 26" when the rim collapsed and I had the largest mountain bike tyre on it that I could get at the time. It seemed normal for me to take my unicycle with me rather than my bike, just more convenient. After seeing the Kamakarsi down hill course, I just had to do it! While the Mountain bikers were doing it in 4.45 minutes, I took 40 minutes. It hurt: my knees and back ached, and I inner thigh was raw from the Pashley saddle. I also got a photo in to MB UK magazine and I was hooked on what was to be called "MUni". All around the world people found mountain unicycling independently, and it got many different names consequently, rough terrain unicycling, mountain unicycling, off-road unicycling, UMX, mountain unibiking and MUni. Duncan Castling designed the first purpose made, mass produced, mountain unicycle for Pashley in 1994 and called it a Muni. Although it is a registered trademark of the Pashley Cycle Company in England, the word "Muni" is becoming the internationally accepted word for... well what ever you want to call it. Here is some information on the pioneers of "Muni":
