Links Introduction The records of the British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association cover the years 1925 to 1992, but most of the material was accumulated during the years from 1977 to 1994. The fonds consists of 3.5m of textual records of the administrative functions and competitive activities of the association. The records were donated to the University of British Columbia Library, Special Collections and University Archives Division in 1990, by Professor Jean Elder. According to Professor Elder, further accruals can be expected. Administrative History The British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association was established on October 27, 1990, by the passage of a motion for amalgamation at a joint meeting of the British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association, incorporated in 1969, and the British Columbia Ladies Lawn Bowling Association. Also referred to in a few of the records of the fonds as the British Columbia Ladies Lawn Bowling Association was formed c. 1966, and in 1979, merged with the Dogwood Ladies Lawn Bowling Association, incorporated in 1974. The amalgamation authorized the transfers of all assets, books, property and the records of the British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association to the new British Columbia Lawn Bowling Association.

Known officially in the United States as the Game of Lawn Bowls , Lawn Bowling is played on grass in all parts of the country. The game is played on a grass rink that is XXX feet long and XX feet wide. Players play as individuals or on teams of up to four. They roll their bowls towards a jack at the opposite end of the rink. After all of the bowls have been played, the end is scored. A game lasts for a number of ends or to a certain point total. Bowling has both tradition and etiquette to promote good sportmanship and enjoyment for all participants. Still need more information? Let's look at some of these terms in a little more detail. The green is a closely clipped lawn. In fact the grass is only 1/16 of an inch high. Here is a picture of the one of the greens. The bowls are between 4 1/2 inches to 5 1/8 inches around. They weigh between 2.7 and 3.5 pounds each. Each player selects what type of bowl to use depending on their hand size and preference for type of play. There are eight sizes of bowls, three weights of bowls and several styles of bias.

Extractions: Hammond Village Trophy Hammond Village Shield The Lawn Bowls Group was started in 1994 when a group of bowlers approached the then Village Manager, Paul Hampson, with a view to using the lawn by the entrance drive as a bowling green. The Manager agreed on condition that the bowlers did the work themselves. The area of lawn was only big enough for one rink so more space was requested. The group finally got permission to use the garden area adjacent to the lawn as well. The palm trees and shrubs were removed and the work to construct two rinks began. And hard work it was too for those who participated. It is due to these foundation members and the kindness of our Village Manager that the villagers can now participate in all the competitions and fun days that our various Village committees arrange for us. The Manager has helped the group along by erecting a large shade area at the end of the green for protection against the sun, and has provided tables and chairs for our use. We also have a Manager's Sponsor Day twice a year and receive help towards running raffles when we have bowlers from other villages visit us.
