Extractions: KYUDO The Way Of The Bow KYUDO is japanese bowmanship. It is one of the traditional BUDO ( martial ) arts developed from the military skills of the old times japanese warrior, SAMURAI . Kyudo has the same speciality that lies in all the true martial arts. The developement of the "self". By training seriously, according to the standards set by the old masters, shooting a large number of arrows per day for some decades one will reach understanding of his true self. HISTORY It is with the history of kyudo as it is with the bowmanship in general. The origin is so old that there is no record of when and how the bow was invented. Many old japanese bows are found, the oldest dating back to about 6000 BC. The form of the composite bow that is preserved until our days was depeloped during the Heian Period around the eleventh century. The bow was at that time used for hunting and as a main weapon of the japanese warrior. The bow was mainly used on horseback so even the code for the warrior was called KYUBA NO MICHI , the Way of the Bow and Horse. Practice at that time was of course targeted mainly on the technical part of the shooting

Extractions: Chozen-ji Betsuin/International Zen Dojo of Wisconsin provides a place of Rinzai Zen training that is open to any person committed to realizing his/her True Self through rigorous mind/body discipline. We are an affiliate of Daihonzan Chozen-ji/International Zen Dojo in Honolulu, Hawaii, which was founded in 1979 by Omori Sogen Rotaishi The Chozen-ji lineage of Zen emphasizes the integration of traditional Zen training with training in the martial and fine arts. Training in Chozen-ji Kyudo is available. All of our training follows the principles articulated by Omori Sogen in the Daihonzan Chozen-ji Canon: "Zen is to transcend life and death (all dualism), to truly realize that the entire universe is the "True Human Body" through the discipline of "mind and body in oneness." Miyamoto Niten (Musashi) called it Iwo no mi, (body of a huge boulder - going through life rolling and turning like a huge boulder); Yagyu Sekisusai named it Marubashi no michi, (a bridge round like a ballbeing in accord with the myriad changes of life). Besides this actual realization, there is nothing else. "Zen without the accompanying physical experience is nothing but empty discussion. Martial Ways without truly realizing the mind is nothing but beastly behavior. All our students, strive diligently! Gentlemen of the Rinzai Honzan (Main Temple) in Japan open your eyes to this and let us send it out to the world."

Kyudo kyudo the Way of the Bow kyudo, as taught by Kanjuro Shibata XX, is not a competitivesport and marksmanship is regarded as relatively unimportant. http://www.zenko.org/kyudo.html
Extractions: Centuries ago in Japan, archery was regarded as the highest discipline of the Samurai warrior. Then, as the bow lost its significance as a weapon of war, and under the influence of Buddhism, Shinto, Daoism and Confucianism, Japanese archery evolved into Kyudo, the "Way of the Bow", a powerful and highly refined contemplative practice. Kyudo, as taught by Kanjuro Shibata XX, is not a competitive sport and marksmanship is regarded as relatively unimportant. According to Shibata Sensei, a master of the Heki Ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha school of Kyudo, the ultimate goal of Kyudo is to polish the mind - the same as in sitting meditation. "One is not polishing one's shooting style or technique, but the mind. The dignity of shooting is the important point. This is how Kyudo differs from the common approach to archery. In Kyudo there is no hope. Hope is not the point. The point is that through long and genuine practice your natural dignity as a human being comes out. This natural dignity is already in you, but it is covered up by a lot of obstacles. When they are cleared away, your natural dignity is allowed to shine forth" - Shibata Sensei.

Speaking, he pulled back the bowstring, full and slow, until with a singing sound the arrow few away that measured twelve hands and the breadth of three fingers. Its arrowhead hit square in the middle of the foremost rider's helmet and drove through clearly to the first neck plate, so that he fell headlong from the horse"
