Most handcyles are designed with three wheels instead of the normal two-wheeled bicycles and allow the user to peddle and steer the vehicle using only their upper body. The wheelchair tennis team trains and competes for national ranking under the National Foundation of Wheelchair Tennis` STAR ranking system. The Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Center is the home of the World Challenge. Held each year, the World Challenge features the top male and female wheelchair tennis players in the world. Handcycling Handcyclists compete nationally in races of various distances. The Lakeshore Foundation Handcycling program provides short-distance training programs to develop the fundamental skills necessary to operate the handcycle. Riders graduate to long-distance training programs which prepare the rider for competition. Rugby This team sport for quadriplegics has evolved into one of the fastest-growing wheelchair sports worldwide. The Lakeshore Demolition Rugby team was established in 1990. The team stepped onto the national scene in 1995-96 by placing sixth overall in the USA. To be eligible, a player must have impairment in the upper extremities. Brakes are another important aspect. Recumbant/leaners come with caliper or and drum brakes. Uprights can have either caliper , drum brakes, or usually., coaster brakes, which are operated by pedaling backwards. OK, so how do I choose? It would be a mistake to buy a handcyle without trying it. The differences are significant, even small differences can have a large impact on how you fit and ride. The Center has 7 handcylces (all recumbants), which are available for you to try, Freedom Ryder, Lightning Handcycles and Top End have generously made cycles available to the Center. You can ride and talk to people who own and ride each of these cycles. If you can't get to our program, you might want to call the manufacturers, or attend the Ability Expo , where some of the major manufactures attend and allow you to demo the cycles. The Center conducts its program during its Saturday Do-the-Loop program on West River Drive in Philadelphia, PA. The drive is closed to traffic, providing a great place to learn and tour.

The Center has a "fleet" of 9 handcycles, and adds to this number each season. What is a handcycle? A handcycle is a three wheeled cycle that is powered by using your arms to turn the crank. Handcycles fall into two catagories, upright, or recumbent. You sit in an upright model in a manner similar to a wheelchair. In a recumbent model, your torso may be reclined somewhat, and your legs are out in front of you. Each has advantages. Uprights are easier to transfer to, and their higher profile makes them more visible in traffic. Leaners or recumbants are faster, have more gearing, are lighter, and are pretty much the choice for distance or competition riding. Leaner vs. pivot steering All uprights pivot steer, that is the front wheel turns, while the rest of the bike remains upright. Leaners are turned in part by leaning the cycle, which pivots at hingepoints. Some leaners can be problematic if you have concerns with trunk stability. At least one manufacturer, Invacare's Top End cycle, has a traditional pivot steering mechanism.

Back to Main Page The Mesa Association of Sports for the Disabled offers two different cycling programs for athletes with physical disabilities. One program is for foot cranked bi or tricycles and follows the rules and regulations of the National Disabled Sports Alliance. Athletes can compete at varying distances ranging from 1,500 meters to 10,000 meters and may utilize either regulation bicycles or adult trikes. Athletes must provide their own bicycles or tricycles for both practice and competition. There is no cost for the cycling program. Cycling season begins in February and continues through April. Handcycling is offered for athletes as both a recreational and competitive opportunity. Handcycles are specially designed cycles that are cranked by hand. The season for handcycles runs from September through December. The Association provides handcycles for use by athletes. Initially, the athlete will work on improve skills, strength and endurance in a recreational setting with an eye towards participation in competitive road races.
