Karate and Jujitsu will be under the sponsorship of Pankration, an ancient Greek sport which was first introduced to the games in 648 B.C. Pankration will re-enter the 2004 Games just as the host country, Korea brought Tae Kwan Do into the the 1988 Olympic Games. This gives American martial arts athletes of all styles a real opportunity for Olympic Games participation. On Sunday November 22nd 1998, in the town of Llama, Greece, the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima (H.F.P.A.) recognized by the Greek Sports Ministry as the exclusive Federation of research, planning ,development, cultivation, publicity, international development of the Pankration Sport all over the world as an Olympic cultural legacy of Greece, approved and recognized the U.S.A. Federation of Pankration Athlima and it's president Mr. John Townsley, of Palatine Illinois as the legal representative for the cultivation, development, and spread of the Pankration sport in the United States and the preparation of American athletes to compete in 2004 Olympic Games. Extractions: The Greek race is certainly well-known for its athletic and military achievements in the Pre-Christian era. In truth, we must credit them for both the word "athlete" and the ideal it expresses. It was also the Greek soldier who would represent the standard for the rest of the world to follow for centuries. The contribution of the Greeks to the evolution of the martial arts, as we presently know them, is now certainly evident. Fighting systems that have originated in both Eastern and Western parts of the world may indeed be linked to this ancient combat form. In the palaestra , the Greek wrestling school, Pankration was allocated a separate room to train. It was known as the Korykeion, which was equipped with punching and kicking balls, called korykos, which hung from the ceiling beams. The smaller balls were used for punching and the larger ones for kicking, which hung about 2 feet from the floor. Pankration was taught similar to modern day karate, as it was presented in steps or stages until the student had become proficient in the movements and their combinations. After reaching a certain stage, the practitioner would then be allowed to engage in "loose play", as it is called in fencing. Pankration bouts were extremely brutal and sometimes life-threatening to the competitors. Rules were minimal in number. In addition, there were no weight divisions and no time limits. The fighting arena or "ring" was no more than twelve to fourteen-feet square to encourage close-quarter action. As was mentioned earlier, referees were armed with stout rods or switches to enforce the rules against biting and gouging. The rules, however, were often broken by some participants who, realizing they were outclassed by a heavier and stronger foe, would resort to such measures to escape being seriously maimed. The contest itself continued uninterrupted until one of the combatants either surrendered, suffered unconsciousness, or, of course, was killed. Because of the high purses and honors, and the fact that there were no weight classifications, these events were generally monopolized by the "heavy weights".

Boxing came twenty years later, during the twenty-third Olympiad, followed by the pankration which was introduced in 648 BCE during the thirty-third Olympiad, the same year the horse-race was introduced. Two ancient Wrestlers. In the ancient Greek Olympics, wrestling was a sport in which two opponents grappled with each other and tried to force each other to the ground, but without striking. Before the match, the competitors rubbed themselves down with olive oil and then covered each other with powder or dust, to enable a good grip. Unlike modern wrestlers, ancient wrestlers were not divided into weight categories; they were only divided according to age into three groups: boys, youths and men. A match was broken into sections by falls, and the first person make his opponent fall three times was the winner. A man was considered to have a fall if his back or shoulders touched the ground. Completely stretching a man prone, tying him up so that he cannot escape or strangling him were also considered falls. In boxing, like in wrestling, the ancient competitors were not divided according to weight, but only by age. While there was no official ring marked off with ropes for the boxers, their space was limited by the surrounding spectators. There were no rounds, so fighters could not rest except by mutual consent. There is evidence that boxers used equipment such as punching bags, ears guards and padded gloves in training, but they were not used during competition.

I would like to inform you that as of August 31, 2002 the Official organization that represents the Pagration Athlima ( Pankration ), and the only one that is offically recognized by the Hellenic Ministry of Sports along with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Religion and Education. The Hellenic Pagration Athlima Federation under the World Pagration Athlima Federation has assumed the role of the main governing body representing Pankration world wide. The 2004 Youth Olympics and the 2004 Olympics non medal cultural exhibition sport. According to the Hellenic Government there can only be one Federation to represent the Pagration in any international arena such as the Olympics and that is the WPAF and its International Representatives who have stood by the WPAF enforcing and promoting the Pagration Athlima world wide. I welcome all federations who are willing to participate with us under the WPAF. For anyone who doubts the credibility of the WPAF and my posting, you can go to the official website of the Hellenic General Secretary of Sports and see for yourself as to who the Greek gov'ment recognizes. Although the site needs updating, some changes have been made within the WPAF that will appear in due course.

For another, only nine events were featured. Boxing: Those who boxed wore a sort of glove made of straps of soft ox-hide. They didn't fight people of similar weight; opponents were chosen at random. Boxing matches had no time limit and ended only when one boxer held up his hand or fell to the ground. Discus: The throwers of the discus originally threw a circular stone and then later a circular shape made of iron, lead, or bronze. The movements and techniques of ancient discus throwers were very similar to those of today's athletes. Equestrian Events: Horse racing took place in a hippodrome, a large stadium that contained a racetrack very much like today's track and field ovals.
