Extractions: Gaelic Football U.S. Leagues/Teams International Leagues/Teams Australian Rules ... Canadian Football Gaelic Football can be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby, although it predates both of those games. It is a field game which has developed as a distinct game similar to the progression of Australian Rules. Indeed it is thought that Australian Rules evolved from Gaelic Football through the many thousands who were either deported or emigrated to Australia from the middle of the twentieth century. Gaelic Football is played on a pitch approximately 137m long and 82m wide. The goalposts are the same shape as on a rugby pitch, with the crossbar lower than a rugby one and slightly higher than a soccer one. The ball used in Gaelic Football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball. It can be carried in the hand for a distance of four steps and can be kicked or "hand-passed", a striking motion with the hand or fist. After every four steps the ball must be either bounced or "solo-ed", an action of dropping the ball onto the foot and kicking it back into the hand. You may not bounce the ball twice in a row. To score, you put the ball over the crossbar by foot or hand / fist for one point or under the crossbar and into the net by foot or the hand / fist in certain circumstances for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points.

Extractions: Season 2002 was one of mixed fortune. The Pirates started the season with a bang, and spent most of the year atop the ladder, beating rivals Garryowen twice, and really setting the pace for the competition. But we didn't sustain our high level of play, and towards the end of the season, found the going a little tough against Sinn Fein and Garryowen. Losing Tiger, who would prefer to travel overseas than play football (can't imagine why) was also a big problem. Tiges had been a rock in defence all year and was noticably absent for the last few games and finals. Despite her absence for several games though, Tiger managed to win the League Best and Fairest Award. What a champion. Congratulations too to our captain Nic (Nails) who came third.

Extractions: "It's ingrained in my nature as an Irishman," said John Keane of the Gaelic Athletic Association's North American Board. "It's a tremendously important part of my heritage. (As a child) you spoke Gaelic, enjoyed the Irish music and dancing, and you played the games." While the sports are an integral part of Ireland's national heritage, he noted, their organization also makes them sources of intense local pride. Teams represent Ireland's counties, and players must have family connections to, or live and work in, the counties they represent (most players have second jobs). The free-agency system familiar to North American sports fans does not exist.
