Since it has become a tool for finding downed aircraft and stolen cars, today's school kids probably get a vague notion of it early on. Sadly, they aren't told that it can also be great fun for them. A recent e-mail exchange with Tom Stewart K3TS brought back memories of my introduction to RDF. Tom wrote a classic article about two-meter hidden transmitter hunting in New Jersey for the September 1957 issue of QST. I was 10 years old at the time and studying for my ham ticket, faithfully trying to copy W1AW code practice every night on my drifty Hallicrafters S-38D receiver. That QST issue was one of my first ham radio magazines. Tom's tales of T-hunt trickery got me eager to try the sport. When my Novice license arrived the following spring, I agitated at the radio club in our town of 11,000 souls to get the group to hold some hidden transmitter hunts. Even though Novices had two-meter phone privileges at the time, we were a hundred miles from the nearest two-meter activity and there were no repeaters to bridge the gap. Finally, the club scheduled a hunt on 75 meter AM, where most mobile operating was done in those days. I somehow managed to lash together a two-tube 75-meter converter with vibrator power supply and connect it to the broadcast receiver in the family's gas-guzzler convertible. Of course I had to talk Dad into driving. Bemused by the whole thing, he agreed.

It all takes place from July 30 to August 2, 2003 near Cincinnati, Ohio. Event venues are being mapped, the official jury is being selected, and registrations are now being accepted. The championships are open to anyone, at any ARDF skill level, from any country with an IARU Amateur Radio society. Mark your calendar now and make plans to attend. The OH-KY-IN ARS Co-Chairs overseeing the plans are Bob Frey WA6EZV of Cincinnati (left in photo) and Dick Arnett WB4SUV of Erlanger, KY (right in photo). Both have a wealth of experience in the sport, having competed at the 2001 and 2002 USA national Championships, the 1999 IARU Region 2 Championships, and the 2000 and 2002 World Championships. Extractions: SCOTTISH Provident raised £292 million after placing its 37 per cent stake in Aberdeen Asset Management with institutional investors yesterday. The placing was priced at 500p a share and was two times oversubscribed. The shares had fallen 48½p to 494p when the placing was announced last week but rose 26p to 531p yesterday. The heavy demand for the shares comes in marked contrast to recent flotations. Michael Page, the recruitment consultant, was floated at 175p, well below the 190p to 250p range set by Credit Suisse. Extractions: A new public opinion poll, conducted in the week following the Countryside March, shows there is no majority for making fox hunting a criminal offence. The poll, conducted by Research Studies of Great Britain between March 4 8, asked 'Do you think fox hunting should be made a criminal offence or not?' 43% of all respondents did not think foxhunting should be made a criminal offence, with 47% supporting the proposal and 10% responding 'don't know'. Significantly, when the results were analysed by region, the percentage opposing making foxhunters criminals was slightly higher in London, while in rural areas, fox hunting won support by a clear majority with 48% opposing the activity being made a criminal offence and only 39% supporting. Chief press officer of the Countryside Alliance, Janet George, said: "It is one thing to dislike foxhunting. It is a completely different thing to criminalise decent, law-abiding people as seen in London on March 1 for supporting a well-regulated activity that not only helps to manage the fox population and supports 15,900 jobs, but also provides enjoyment for several hundred thousand people. As Mr. Foster's Bill returns to the Commons on Friday, for its second day of Report, this poll indicates clearly that MPs have no mandate to ban hunting." The Government has made it clear that it has no interest in banning hunting, but the Worcester MP, Michael Foster, will attempt to rescue his chances tomorrow by moving an amendment to the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996, which inserts a new offence of 'hunting a wild mammal with a dog'. His own bill was described as 'defective' by the Home Office Minister George Howarth during its Committee stage and has been substantially re-written.

Extractions: TONY BLAIR is to steer away from an immediate clash over foxhunting and the Section 28 law on homosexuality when he unveils the Governments new programme next week. The issues are two of the most controversial facing ministers. But the repeal of Section 28 has been kept out of John Prescotts Local Government Bill which will be one of the centrepieces of the Queens Speech on Wednesday week. Instead ministers will make plain on the day that backbenchers will be invited to table an amendment to the Bill as it goes through Parliament. It means that repeal will be threatened for a second time by blocking tactics in the Lords. Mr Blair will also, as previously promised, herald a Bill on foxhunting. But he will avoid stating the Governments favoured solution for dealing with a ban. A report drawn up by Alun Michael, the Rural Affairs Minister, has been delayed until after the Queens Speech. It is widely expected to propose a ban on foxhunting in all but limited areas. But the government whips accept that anything less than a total ban is unacceptable to Labour MPs. The Bill will be based on Mr Michaels report but is expected to be amended as it goes through.

Extractions: Foxhunting Foxhunting is the pursuit of the wild fox with a pack of hounds. Man has been controlling foxes since he started to farm animals, but the hunting of foxes with hounds for sport became popular over two hundred years ago. The fox is a pest and its population needs to be controlled. Individuals and organisations concerned with farming and the management of the countryside recognise this fact. Responsible fox management includes maintaining a healthy population at a level at which it can thrive without threatening livestock or other wildlife. Foxhunting is the most natural method of management: by its nature, it takes out the old, sick and injured foxes, and there is no risk of wounding. If the fox is caught, it is killed within seconds. If the fox goes to ground, it will either be left unharmed or the landowner may ask that it be killed by the hunt's terrierman. The strict rules governing terrier work laid down by the Masters of Foxhounds Association (MFHA) ensure there is no unnecessary suffering. Foxhunting does not just help control fox numbers. Landowners with an interest in foxhunting plant and maintain coverts, woodlands and copses for the benefit of all wildlife. Few farmers want to see the fox exterminated, but those who support hunting are more inclined to tolerate foxes on their land, as long as their numbers are controlled.

Extractions: The Triangle Hunt is a traditional, formal live foxhunt. The Hunt has registered with the M.F.H.A. a large area of land in Wake, Wayne, Johnston, Wilson, Edgecombe, Greene and Nash counties of North Carolina. Cub hunting begins toward the end of September or beginning of October, depending upon the time the crops are harvested. It is only through the generosity of the landowners and farmers that The Triangle Hunt can continue to hunt. The Opening Meet, which signifies the start of the fox hunting season, takes place the first weekend in November. From this time until April 1st, hounds go out two or three days each week. A fixture card is sent out giving the time, date and location of future meets. The Triangle Hunt typically hunts Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons during season.
