Extractions: COLUMBUS, Ohio An apparent dogfighting ring in Franklin County was put out of business Saturday night. Officers raided the Performance Plus Auto Body Shop at 880 E. Hudson St. at about 10 p.m. Saturday. Deputies said they walked into the middle of a dogfight in progress. "It's brutal. I can't express how sad it is to see these animals in this condition," said Chief Steve Martin of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrested 41 people and seized eight dogs. Six of the dogs were pit bulls; two were rottweilers. Two of the pitt bulls had to be taken to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment. "They needed pain control. They needed some IV fluids. They needed to be stitched up. They were in pretty bad shape, but they are not in critical condition," said Lisa Wahoff of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the arrests were part of a month-long investigation. "The dogs have been genetically bred to fight and it's not safe for our community to have these dogs, these particular pit bulls, living in a neighborhood," Wahoff said.

Extractions: The Victims of Dogfighting We must not fail to suppress a blood sport popular among disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. Following our recent cover story on dogfighting in New Orleans ("Fight Clubs," July 10, 2001), several readers contacted this paper wanting to know how they could help curb the popularity of this gory sport. Most identified themselves as animal lovers disturbed by the pastime's impact on its most visible victims the dogs. Some suggested raising reward money to motivate citizens to call police when they witness dogfighting in their communities. Others proposed helping the SPCA's volunteer efforts in local schools to impress upon kids that dogs do endure pain. Their concern is justified and their ideas are good ones. Canines regularly turn up at area animal shelters displaying evidence of dogfighting. The local SPCA's policy is to destroy those animals. And because the sport favors the American Pit Bull Terrier, dogs born to the breed suffer from a maligned reputation as natural-born killers. In fact, pit bulls become vicious only after their owners raise and train them to behave that way; the dogs make loving and loyal companions when given the chance. As a result of public hysteria, even the gentlest pit bulls and pit bull mixes are often difficult for shelters to adopt out. But these animals aren't the only victims of dogfighting. This illicit sport, which pits dogs against each another until one is too injured or unwilling to continue, is popular in New Orleans' inner city, and particularly among young men and boys. Local psychiatrists are concerned about the impact this has on youths. The values learned in early years of development last a lifetime, stresses Dr. Ed Foulks, a psychiatry professor who specializes in post-traumatic stress disorder at Tulane University's School of Medicine. And for those involved in pastimes such as dogfighting, Foulks says, "violence becomes a nonchalant part of everyday life."

Extractions: As an anniversary present to each other, Becky and Bill took to the skies over Atlanta and duked it out. To assist our quest, we solicited the services of a local company called Sky Warriors, based at Fulton County Airport ( FTY ). They use military trainers equipped with simulated guns, gunsights, smoke machines, video cameras, and (oh yes) flight instructors! The "guns" are really lasers. Each plane is equipped with several sensors. When you succeed at getting your laser aimed at one of your opponent's sensors, you get the "kill" and are rewarded with a 3-second burst of smoke from the other plane. Our battle took place on June 26, 1998, at high noon. In addition to the dogfights, Bill was able to do some aerobatic work which included several aileron rolls, a loop, a hammerhead, and a spin. Although the video cameras gave us two excellent records of our adventure, the picture opportunities were limited to just the takeoff, landing, and formation flying. Each plane is a T-34A "Mentor" military trainer. This is a single-engine airplane with a 300 horsepower engine (a Teledyne Continental IO-550) driving a three bladed constant speed propeller. The maximum speed of this aircraft is 209 knots (240 mph) with a corner velocity of 150 knots (172 mph). It is rated to 6 positive Gs and 3 negative Gs.

Learn the limitations of your aircraft. Know what it can and cannot do. Also learn the planes warning signs, for stalls, spins, and airframe damage. This is a picture of the renversement - a maneuver that is thought to have been the actual Immelmann turn. Rather than a half loop followed by a half roll, this is a steep climb, followed by a hard kick on the rudder, causing the nose to turn through 180 degrees. Once in this position the stick is pulled back and you have perfect position to attack the enemy. When attacking from above and behind, you must be careful not to overshoot your target. You must adjust your speed so you can stay right behind the enemy, giving you maximum time to deliver the death blow. One should never stay with an opponent who through your bad shooting or his skillful turning you have been unable to shoot down. When the battle lasts until you are isolated and alone, you must break off the attack, or risk attack by a greater number of opponents. Attack the enemy when he is busy attacking another It is far better to make one fast run, punch hard, and get out, rather than to get entangled in a continually twisting and turning dogfight. In such fights speed and altitude is lost quickly and can put you to a great disadvantage.

Extractions: Air Attack 10. Dogfighting Air-to-air combat is not something you can learn overnight. There's a difference between being able to simply spar with an opponent, and becoming a true master of the skies. You will be able to feel yourself improve from match to match, as you become more comfortable with your craft and your reflexes. Here are a few basic tips to start you off properly: Flying an aircraft is a 3-D experience. Your flight path takes you along 3 planes of motion, called axies. These are the Pitch, the Roll and the Yaw. Remember that most climbs and turns will reduce your airspeed, making you an easy target, while a high speed dive is a good way to deal with a more maneuverable opponent. The key to a successful dogfight is realizing all of your options. In a 3-D environment you can dive, turn, roll and climb towards or away from any opponent. Dogfighting is all about position. You're going to have to use a lot of maneuvering tactics to make a good shot and to avoid getting shot yourself. The most basic tactic to get away from a following aircraft is simply to loop around it. This will allow you to get out of the way of the pursuing aircraft, get around it, and end up behind it.

Extractions: SPORT By Alan Kennedy If it wasn't for Essendon, the AFL's dream of all things being equal would almost be reality. Disregarding the Bombers, who are 12 points clear of everyone else, there are 11 teams vying for seven spots in the finals. And that may be 12 teams if Melbourne's sudden return to form on Saturday, when they downed Carlton, continues. That is exactly what the player draft and salary cap was supposed to produce. With just seven games to go the AFL ladder is looking extraordinary. The Sydney Swans are in the middle of the pack jostling for a finals spot and have a better than even chance of nailing one. How things change; a few weeks ago it looked as though just the last spot was up for grabs. But with the downward spiral of Richmond, Collingwood and Carlton, who have all lost their past two games, and with Hawthorn looking shaky, there are as many as three spots still undecided. The Swans confounded the critics on Saturday by flogging Hawthorn, which came just a week after they brought down high flyers Carlton.

Players must align themselves with either the United States, United Kingdom, France or Germany as they battle with their nation's respective enemies through missions with varying degrees of difficulty. Each country has a plane available that displays its speed, handling and firepower through bars, while information is shown about the engines, amount of horsepower and guns. All of these characteristics make the plane representing one country different from another. When victorious, players can earn medals that honor their achievements. Produced by AtomShockwave and available for play in both high and low bandwidth formats on its Shockwave website, Death From Above: World War I Arcade Dogfighting mixes arcade-style action with flight simulation. It is a title that launched today from developer The Groove Alliance. Located in Hollywood, California, the studio's past credits include the action adventure title Tank Wars, the first person shooter Alien X and Real Pool 3D. Death From Above is its fourth title to be based on web-browser technology in the hopes of reaching casual gamers. Today, we were happy to receive 10 screenshots showing off the game in action, and present these in our Death From Above: World War I Arcade Dogfighting Gallery.

Unlike cats, who plunge directly into despair upon finding themselves camped together in wire cages, the dogs don't quite seem to grasp the gravity of the situation. Even the dourest-looking pound hound harbors a fiicker of hope, lifting its head and thumping its tail if someone simply squats down at its cage and waves a couple of fingers at it. The young dogs are especially oblivious. Take "Turbo," a 6-month-old pit bull puppy picked up as a stray in a south San Jose neighborhood. He flops up to the fence on too-big feet, ears swinging, and tries to lick his visitors to death through the wires of his cage. Tan and white with the classically beautiful wide pit head, he's all velveteen muzzle and sleek coat, rubbing his head and neck against the fingers at the fence. He's friendly and unscarred, a dog who's been treated well, and a laminated placard hanging on his cage discourages people who would have any other plans for him. "I am a pit bull puppy mix," the card reads. "In order to adopt me you will need ... ." Turbo's adoption requires two training classes (completion ensured by deposits) and a fee for alteration prior to leaving the shelter. The conditions are part of an effort to protect him from the unhappy fate of other pit bulls at this shelter.

Even Spectators may be Arrested, Fined and/or Jailed. Many Americans admire and cherish dogs, as loyal, trusting and loving members of their own families. Some people, however, routinely abuse "man's best friend" for the illegal and barbaric purpose of dogfighting. Sadly, in Louisiana, dogfighting activities are not uncommon. The fights may even take place out in the open, in tough, inner-city neighborhoods. Sometimes, the events are conducted in secret, along the outskirts of small rural towns. For the tormented dogs, however, the outcome is always the same. To satisfy the greed and bloodlust of their owners and other spectators at these events, the unfortunate animals are forced to endure excruciating pain and suffering, in bloody fights to the death. Not only are these animals savagely wounded and/or killed during fights, they are almost always abused outside of the ring. The animals are subjected to cruel training practices, designed to make them vicious, and they are often deprived of the most basic necessities, like adequate food, water, shelter and vet care.
