Extractions: Camogie Club Website The history of Camogie in the Courcey Parish started in 1954 when a group of girls from the parish got together and started a team called the Courcey Maids, their colours were blue and white with a red and white Courcey crest. They had to travel to Churchfield in Cork to play all their matches as it was mostly city teams they played. The highlight for the Courcey Maids teams was to be asked by the county board to invite a team from Armagh. The match was played in Kilmacsimon and two Courcey Maids played for Cork that day, Nellie O'Sullivan ("The Nellie Bus") and Kitty Crowley (RIP) (Kittys Bar Bandon). A young curate named O'Fiach accompanied the Armagh girls that day who was later to become Primate of All Ireland, Cardinal O'Fiach. After a lapse of a few years , Camogie was again revived in the Parish in 1982. The team then being known as Courcey Rovers and reverting to the club colours of Red and White hoops. In 1982 when the Camogie club was reformed they were the only team in West Cork but now are joined by almost a team from every Hurling Club in West Cork and South East Cork. Courceys in their first year went to the County semi-final and were beaten by a more experienced Glen Rovers side who went on to win the County. Two years later in 1984 they again reached the County Semi-Final to be narrowly beaten by St. Fanahans, Mitchelstown. One year later in 1985 was to be Courcey Rovers greatest year before the 1990's when they reached the County Final against Castlemagner but at the end the scoreline was Castlemagner 2:4, Courcey Rovers 1:2.

Extractions: On February 1st, St. Mary's Junior 'A' Camogie team retained the title of Munster Champions when they played old rivals St. Mary's of Nenagh. On the panel representing Ballyhea were Edwina Waters, Mary Coleman, Siobhan O'Leary. In the All-Ireland semi-final, St. Brid's, Enniscorthy will be the opposition and that is fixed for the first weekend in March. The Senior 'A' team kept the flag flying on Saturday 8th February when they became Munster Champions after a tough encounter with Loreto, Fermoy. They too are pitted against St. Brid's of Enniscorthy, the second weekend in March. To help the side to victory were Amy Morrissey, Karen O'Leary, Edwina Waters and Mary Coleman. Based on the traditional Gaelic men's of hurling , it pits teams of 15 armed with sticks, and most likely protected by helmets, in a contest to get a ball through a goal on either end of the field. The ball is known as a "slithar", and hit about the field using sticks known as "hurleys", with ends known as "bas." The hurleys are made of wood and between 30 and 37 inches long. Parts of the Hurley The 15 players on the pitch include a goalkeeper, six defenders, two midfielders, and six forwards. Only three substitutes are permitted in each 60-minute game. To move the slithar about the field, a player can hit it with the hurley, hand it, kick it, or hit it from the ground. The object, of course, is to score a goal, which can be done in one of two ways. If the slithar passes between the goal posts above the crossbar, a "point" is scored. A "goal", worth three points, is the reward when the slithar crosses the goal, under the crossbar.

Cornafean Camogie club currently compete at Intermediate level in the Cavan camogie Championship and Leagues. Its most recent successes were in February 2001 when the Under-10's won the County Indoor Camogie League, and in 1999 when the club scooped both the Intermediate League and Championship titles. Camogie in Cornafean - The early days The sport was first played in the area since the 1930's, when teams were organised in both Cornafean itself and in Kilmore, but most local successes in organised competition have been recorded since the Cornafean club was re-established in the late 1960's. The 1970's In 1972, the local club achieved its first major success in winning the Cavan Junior Championship, when they defeated Kingscourt in the final. Among Cornafean's key players were Kathleen Barry, Eileen Halton, Pauline Maguire, Maura and Rita Brady, and Mary Martin, who, at 12 years old, was making a notable debut in adult competition. The team was trained by Jim Hannon and Tommy Brady. Three years later, Cornafean won their first Intermediate League title, when they defeated Craobh Rua in the 1975 final. Goals from Geraldine Donohoe, Monica McCabe and Philomena were the key to this victory, with the final scoreline reading Cornafean 3-4 Craobh Rua 2-3.

Six minutes had passed before Amanda had our first goal and we were to add two more from Olivia and Carina before Aidans had a pointed free midway through the first half. At this stage we appeared to be coasting to victory. Aidans had other ideas and they made it really difficult for us in the second half. They had the only score of that half, a goal and there was great excitement as we held out to win our first ever Div. 2 camogie title and Olivia headed up the steps to receive the trophy. Top of Page

Ten teams in all took part, representing different countries who will be taking part in the Special Olympics. We were visited by Eithne Duggan, former Cork senior player and captain. She was on the All-Ireland winning team in September last. She brought the O'Duffy Cup with her and the girls were dreaming of the future as they got a chance to hold the All-Ireland cup. She signed hurleys, jerseys and anything else to hand before having her photograph taken with the players. Copies will be available - get in touch with Mairéad any Friday. In section 1 we had Ireland, U.S.A., China, Spain and France. France came out on top beating Spain in the Final. These teams were all under 11 and Dóirín Leahy had no trouble refereeing for the afternoon. Many stars of the future were on display not least Niamh O'Leary, Sherelle Naughton, Grace Marum, Amy Dennehy, Doireann Twomey and Emer Fahy. They all splept well on Sunday night. In section 2 we had the over 11's representing Australia, Italy, Japan, Germany and Jamaica. Competition was very intense and the sliotar left the pitch and narrowly missed the cars and the school building several times. The parents had to be cautioned for getting too involved. In the end Germany overcame Australia in a very close final that nearly went to a penalty shoot out - which goes to show that you can never rule out the Germans even in Camogie!

In its current guise,it was formed in 1998. Some people believe that an Adult Camogie team represented the Parish back in the Late sixties or early Seventies. Unfortunately,records for that era are unavailable.. So this report only covers the 1998 Beginning. The foundations of the Club were laid in the Spring of 1997,when training was set up every Saturday evening for the girls of the local national schools. For the record the 1st training session Was held on 1st of March 1997. The school competitions got the girls involved,and gave them their 1st feel for a match Against an opposing team . After a few encouraging performances by the school teams ,And with interest growing it was decided to have an attempt at forming a Club within the Parish. So in the early Spring of 1998,we reigistered Carnmore Camogie Club with the County Camogie Board. The Seed Capital for this great venture into the unknown world of Galway Camogie was put up directly by the parents of the girls involved. That year we played in County And City Fixtures. To say it was a tough year on the playing fields is a major understatement.Our inexperience,on and off the field was exploited by most teams we met. Nevertheless,as the Year went on,the girls did get more used to playing matches,and a noticeable improvement Was evident in their play.

The U12s gave a good account of themselves in both the league and the championship. The U14s had agreat achievement in reaching the finals of both the shield and the Championship. And are currently at the top of the League as well. 5 members of this panel represented the club at county level - Orlaith Donnelly, Emma Duffy, Eleanor Kelly, Niamh O Brien and Naomi Walsh. The U16s also reached the Shield final losing out to Glenealy. Roisín Mulford and Ruth Kelly played on the county team. The Intermediates, played in the senior league and championship. In spite of foot and mouth managed to get through all their fixtures and are looking forward to next year when more players should become available. Nicky Keddy and Martina Kelly played on the County Senior Team.

The emergency meeting was called after a very difficult year, with massive debts, recruitment problems and a difficult season to consider. The members voted overwhelmingin favour of continuing the Camogie Club. This turning point was greeted by the Club sponsor, Tim Cott, Amersham Arms publican with a decision to allow The Celts and CuChullainn Hurling Club to hold a Fund Raiser Social on 3rd November. So Club members are looking forward to next year and a good party to see off this 2001. Council Manoeuvres: Get this London Borough of Greenwich, Greenwich Leisure Services have increased Celts Pitch Fees by over 1000%in 2001. While concerns about the pitch, mainly Health and Safety issues remain unaddressed. As The Celt Camogs know over past two years, entry to the pitch via locked gates, dog shite and litter on playing area, bent goal posts, locked toilets and lack of changing facilities is the norm. Camogie is not publicly funded and all club funds are raised by volunteers mainly women with families. Thank you Greenwich Leisure Limited for your consideration.
