Most students usually know something about this activity. However, most students probably do not know many details. For example: When and from where did the idea for bullfighting come? Who are its participants? Where does a bullfight take place? What happens during a bullfight? What rules do its participants follow? What rewards are given to bullfighters? What is it like to be a spectator? How popular is bullfighting? You are going to explore numerous websites during the next two class periods to answer these questions. You may even learn more about bullfighting that the above questions pose! The Task In the Ole! Bullfighting WebQuest students will first gather and organize information about bullfighting and will later work in pairs to create a pamphlet/brochure using Microsoft Publisher advertising bullfighting and answering the questions noted in the introduction. Process Day 1 Each student will work with a partner of his/her choice. In the event there is not an even number of students there may need to be one group of three students. Each pair of students will keep a journal of the questions researched and the corresponding answers to those questions as they are discovered. Today students will first explore several internet sites and find information about the origin of Spanish bullfighting, learning why, where and when bullfighting originated. Next, students will research what happens at a bullfight and the rules followed by its participants. Students will begin making a Spanish/ English vocabulary list of bullfighting terms. Student partners are expected to work together discussing information as it is accessed and incorporated into their journals.

In Spain the bullfight is called the Fiesta Nacional (The national Sport). There are few places in Spain where a bull-ring can't be found within a short drive. It is the most common thing associated with Spain, and rightly so for its origins date back to 711AD when the first bullfight ( corrida ) took place in honour of the crowning of King Alfons VIII. Every week, all over Spain, many thousands of Spaniards flock to the nearest bullring, but not all Spaniards agree with the sport, or like it. It is reported that each year, within Spain, 24,000 bulls are killed in front of an audience of 30 million people. The bullfighting season runs from March to October. Bullfighting was originally done on horseback and was a sport reserved for the aristocracy. This changed when Felipe V prohibited the nobles from practicing the sport as he felt it was a bad example for the public's education. From then on the commoners took on the sport, facing the bulls unarmed, dodging and taunting the bull then eventually placing small spears into the bull, the origin of the banderillas of todays bullfights. Around 1724 the sport was transformed from horseback to foot.

Many of the greatest bullfighters have met their death in small villages when, ironically, most of them take their greatest risks in the big, more important rings in Spain. However, death often creeps up on them unawares when they are least expecting it. Manolete's earnings on that tragic afternoon were 300,000 pesetas - an unbelievable sum in 1947, and even more incredible in a small provincial town like Linares. But Manolete was second to none; in a class of his own. Undoubtedly, he was the biggest star in the Spanish bullfight cosmos at the time. He was rated as The Best. He took his alternativa in Seville in July 1939, right at the end of the Spanish civil war, and at the age of 29, he already commented that he was thinking of quitting the business and going into retirement. "I have already earned more money than five generations of my ancestors all together," he said. "But I have never really had time to enjoy the money. I'm planning to quit the ring while I'm still all in one piece."

In each faena a bull (toro) is faced by one of three matadors (though on special occasions there may only be one matador present). Matadors (or toreros), the ones who actually kill the bull, are dressed in gold, while their subordinates are in silver or black dress. Each faena is divided into three sections. In the first section, the bull's strength is tested by the matador and his assistants, who at this point are using large magenta and yellow capes. The bull is then weakened by picadors on horseback who lance the bull in the back of the neck. In addition to weakening the bull, this forces it to drop its head to the level of the bullfighters' capes.
