This is a great devotional. It changed the way I look at life.God's grace is a wonderful thing and it is great to learn to live in it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to be a Woman of Grace
Another excellent book in Cynthia Heald's "Becoming a Woman of..." series.

Helpful for both new beginners in Bible study as well as those who have had more experience, and useful for both individual as well as group study.

The format keeps the individual/group interested, it is a good combination of looking up Bible verses and reading well-chosen quotes/commentary selections. Also, it is not simply a book for amassing more knowledge, but you are challenged to apply what you are learning.

If you want to learn more about God's grace and how His grace helps you to become a woman of grace, this is the book/Bible study for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Find!
This is the first book by Cynthia Heald that I have ever purchased, and I am hooked! It is the absolute best Bible study/devotional I have ever purchased. You are prompted to read short excerpts from the Bible and are then given questions from the author that allow you to reflect on what you have read. There is space provided for comments, as well as additional empty "notes" pages in the back.I am a very hands on learner so this format is great for me.Although, I am a daily Bible reader, this study has really helped me to grasp the power and awe of God's grace.I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful set of books!!!
Cynthia's Heald's books "Becoming a woman of..." books are excellent for any woman, whether you are just starting to read the Bible or have read it 10 times.Cynthia's writing style was truly impressive to me.Each chapter starts with a reflective Bible verse and an exerpt from a Christian author or speaker. Then it gives you three or four different verses to look up in the Bible, sections to write your notes, and then a section with the Author's reflection on the concept of the chapter. The chapters increase in complexity, each more challenging as you go on through the book.I bought them all at once, along with "Loving Your Husband" which is also in this Bible study format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Becoming a Woman of Grace was a wonderful study! It went back to the basics of christianity by defining the purpose of the law (10 commandments) and the purpose and reason for grace! I have always been impressed withCynthia Healds books... they provide a great format for getting into theword and really learning what it means to be a better woman for Christ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book really ministered to me. It was the first book I've completely finished in a long time. I would recommend this to women, who have dealt with many disappointments in life, that can stunt your growth. This book exposed the lies we tend to believe and the strongholds that can develop. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommended it to all my friends.

Product Description

An unparalleled exploration of the mysteries underlying women’s sexuality that rivals the culture-shifting Kinsey Report, from two of America’s leading research psychologists

Do women have sex simply to reproduce or display their affection? When University of Texas at Austin clinical psychologist Cindy M. Meston and evolutionary psychologist David M. Buss joined forces to investigate the underlying sexual motivations of women, what they found astonished them.

Through the voices of real women, Meston and Buss reveal the motivations that guide women’s sexual decisions and explain the deep-seated psychology and biology that often unwittingly drive women’s desires—sometimes in pursuit of health or pleasure, or sometimes for darker, disturbing reasons that a woman may not fully recognize. Drawing on more than a thousand intensive interviews conducted solely for the book, as well as their pioneering research on physiological response and evolutionary emotions, Why Women Have Sex uncovers an amazingly complex and nuanced portrait of female sexuality. They delve into the use of sex as a defensive tactic against a mate’s infidelity (protection), as a ploy to boost self-confidence (status), as a barter for gifts or household chores (resource acquisition), or as a cure for a migraine headache (medication).

Why Women Have Sex stands as the richest and deepest psychological understanding of female sexuality yet achieved and promises to inform every woman’s (and her partner’s) awareness of her relationship to sex and her sexuality.

Cindy M. Meston is one of the world’s leading researchers on women’s sexuality and a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, where she directs the Sexual Psychophysiology Laboratory, a cutting-edge lab on women’s sexual experience.

David M. Buss, one of the founders of the field of evolutionary psychology, is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and is the author of several books, including The Evolution of Desire and The Dangerous Passion. Their jointly authored article, “Why Humans Have Sex,” garnered international attention when it was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

In Why Women Have Sex, clinical psychologist Cindy M. Meston and evolutionary psychologist David M. Buss present an unparalleled exploration of the mysteries underlying women’s sexuality that rivals the culture-shifting Kinsey Report.

"Why Women Have Sex is a captivating tour of what psychology and biology can tell us about women’s sexual motivation. Meston and Buss are first-rate scientists and skilled writers who actually answer the question that everyone was afraid to ask."—Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology, Harvard University, and author of Stumbling on Happiness
“Occasionally poetic, always candid. The book is filled with insights with which to start conversations.”—Psychology Today

"Why Women Have Sex is an endlessly well informed and irresistibly readable book. The candor of the women’s responses and the authors’ knowledge of all that has been happening in the world of sex research for the past few decades combine to make it the most fascinating and illuminating look at female sexuality since Kinsey’s Sexual Behavior in the Human Female."—Mary Roach, author of Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex

"What an excellent book! You will come away from reading Why Women Have Sex with a better understanding of what turns women on or off, the physiology underlying desire and arousal, the likely consequences when sex is undertaken to thwart or titillate a partner, and the complexity of sexual desire. There is not much more one can ask for—to be at once enlightened and entertained by two trustworthy and sympathetic experts."—Sandra R. Leiblum Ph.D., author of Getting the Sex You Want

"Why Women Have Sex is full of fascinating research that will help everyone better understand and appreciate their sexual selves."—Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of The Secret Pleasures of Menopause and The Wisdom of Menopause

Meston and Buss are first-rate scientists and skilled writers who actually answer the question that everyone was afraid to ask."—Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology, Harvard University, and author of Stumbling on Happiness

"What do women want? According to University of Texas at Austin psychology professors Meston (director, Sexual Psychophysiology Lab) and Buss (The Evolution of Desire), this is a perplexing question, particularly with respect to sex. In 11 chapters, they provide the answers generated by clinical research and survey responses from 1,006 women aged 18 through 86 in the United States, Canada, Germany, Belgium, France, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, and China. Interspersing quotations from the survey with state-of-the-art research, Meston and Buss demonstrate the surprising span of relevant motivating factors. They conclude that women want sex for the following reasons: pleasure, emotional and spiritual connection, the thrill of conquest, a means of guarding a mate or trading up, a sense of adventure, health rewards, to fulfill a sense of duty or responsibility, to bolster body image, and desire for sexual punishment, cruelty, and violence. This study will intrigue and inform students and readers of Havelock Ellis, William Masters and Virginia E. Johnson, and Alfred Kinsey."—Lynne F. Maxwell, Villanova University School of Law Library, Pennsylvania, Library Journal

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that lives up to its title
This book is exactly what the title says...it covers all the reasons women have sex. It does this by turning a scientific research study into a very entertaining book. You will finish the book with a more well rounded understanding if your a guy and if your a girl you may finally understand why you slept with some of the guys you did. It is not a how to sleep with women book (guys), but you can learn to understand women better and if you pay attention why women sleep with certain men for certain reasons (this book covers about all of them), you can pick what motivations you want to givewoman and emulate that.
Overall a great book and a great narrative, I wish they reported all scientific research studies in this format!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Being in the sexual health field, I have come across this kind of research. This book is able to present that information to readers in a way that everyone can understand. It is very captivating and covers a wide range of topics. I would consider this a must read for both men and women.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Question

This book makes two important contributions.First, is the title.Dr Meston does not confuse love and sex, although emotional reasons (love and commitment) ranked high in the original study.Second, a man can identify with many of the same reasons!

With the evolutionary psychology input, the book stays within the procreation/pleasure paradigm, yet includes reasons like, "wanting to get close to God": a small percentage. The Sacred Female

Had this book been written by Dr. Buss alone, I would have given it the same credence I gave Gray's "Men are from Mars": zero.Dr. Meston, perhaps subconsciously, brings a feminine balance and authority beyond the numbers.

It is important to note two things while reading: 1. The original study was conducted using college age students as a base line and 2. The study was expanded to the general public with small response, yet expanding the age range. The book is only as definitive as the population studied and there are many cultural variations in reasoning.

I would strongly recommend this book for women who ask, "Am I the only one who feels this way?"And for men who ask, "What the hell is going on with her?"Whatever your motivation for purchasing this title, you will find the book smooth to read and fascinating!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sex and women
Really enjoyed the book.Had great info. I actually got it for my "friend with benefits" because he wants to read it but couldn't find it for sale.I think he will enjoy it too.I even highlighted it for him, lol.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bible for men seeking admission to the Cave of Joy
I loved this well-written look regarding women's decisions whether to hop on our sexual motorcycles and do the deed. This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT INFORMATION for heterosexual men to know since we are charged with the vitally important task of initiating the procreation of our species. Lesbians will find it informative, and women too.

Surprisingly the book is based on a somewhat flawed research design but the book adroitly shifts focus, and uses the initial research as an entree into an entertaining discussion of sex research, mostly from the past fifty years. So the book is perhaps better seen as an overview of new developments regarding the field of sex research, with findings from related fields such as evolutionary biology and psychology, but with a focus on women's reasons for having sex. The result is INTERESTING and difficult to read without being in some state of arousal.

The study itself, however, was lackluster. Funds are tight; so the authors did an online study by placing advertisements asking women to participate in their confidential assessment. What I couldn't fathom, based on the authors' description of the survey design, was how the authors were sure that survey respondents were indeed women. How did they confirm this? If anybody could participate and say they were a "woman", what check was done to ensure that this was, indeed, the case? There was mention that this research was done in addition to an earlier quantitative study, but there was little mention of how this earlier study was done. An ideal research design would have been to select respondents randomly based on a national sample (chosen to reflect the universe of adult American women), but surveys of this nature can be expensive; in this case, respondents self-selected themselves. This can distort the results, since persons choosing to talk about their innermost motivations are likely to be highly different from people in general. Many of the responses were by youngish women (under 25) and seemed to over-sample college-age women who, arguably, don't have as much experience as others.

But the survey was oriented not on the women themselves, but on a list of 237 motivations or reasons for possibly having sex. So the survey focused not on people but on motivations. Had they ever had sex for one of these 237 reasons? And if they did, respondents were asked to elaborate about the circumstances. So this choice side-stepped the whole issue of trying to quantify which motivations were more important and instead fleshed out women's motivations for having sex. There was a risk that the authors would give each motivation equal weight. Still, this focus worked well to uncover, so to speak, how women analyze their motivations. What reasons do they give for doing the deed? What rationales cross their minds afterwards?

There was an insight in an excellent book called "How to Succeed with Women, Revised and Updated" to the effect that most women don't really know (on some deep level) why they decide to have sex, and I think there is some truth to this. They get an urge, act upon it, and offer different reasons afterwards; clearly, this is how men probably think about it. But this question about self-assessment of motivation applies not just to women but to people in general -- do we really know WHY we do what we do? We're conscious of our hungers and appetites, but it's hard to pinpoint why we do things precisely.

Still, this book is an interesting foray into these rationales buttressed by the latest findings from related disciplines, with intelligent and fetching commentary from pop culture at times. Having two authors -- one of each sex -- was a definite plus. The result is enlightening. The book offers a smorgasbord of reasons why now is whoopie time: (1) it will help you, my dear, see God (2) it will CURE your headache (3) it will STRENGTHEN our connection (4) it will cause your girlfriends to respect you MORE (5) you'll experience what the fuss is about and (6) you'll enjoy beneficial physical effects (a workout for abdominal muscles) and on and on. There are 237 reasons. Men: learn every reason; so, armed with this knowledge, on that key second date, you can whip out an assortment of reasons to tease an on-the-fence look in her eye. Who knows? Perhaps reason #47 will magically unlock the entrance to the cave of sweetness, and enable you, too, to SEE GOD.

While God is not mentioned in the book of Esther, He is evident in every chapter. It is amazing to watch Him work out His plan for His people through the folks you meet in Esther. It just shows, once again, that God can work through the most unlikely people to accomplish His will for us.

Women of Faith Study Bible offers a feminine perspective on an age-old text. In numerous places, the editors insert interpretations that celebrate and elevate women's status in the Bible. "Some have said that in times when men are spiritually weak God uses women instead," the editors write in the Book of Samuel. "It is probably more accurate to say the deeds and faith of women are simply more apparent in those times. For the Lord gives gifts and callings to all people."

In the opening pages readers will find a "Weekly Studies Index" that references the Old and New Testaments with metaphorical themes such as "Uncharted Waters," "Are You a Bush or a Tree?" and "Jars of Clay." It also offers almost 80 full-page "Character Sketches" that profile women from the Bible, such as "Eve, Mother of Discontent," "Jezebel--Bent on Evil," and "Noah's Wife: Along for the Ride or a Partner in Adventure?" (The latter sketch tries to imagine the thoughts and actions of this almost invisible wife: "Perhaps she resented all the extra work Noah's obsession caused.") Other features include a timeline of women in the Bible, a genealogy of Jesus, and a dictionary of biblical terms.

One disappointment is the thin paper stock, limiting its shelf life and making it fragile for a daily reader. Fortunately, the 13-page spread of full-color maps is printed on heavy stock paper. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My initial review from preview
I thought I would write a review as a heads up for those who are curiously looking at this green Bible photo (above) and thinking maybe that they are looking at a brocade fabric that looks like expensive rayon curtain or evening gown fabric or something. It really, really looks like that up close even. But when you hold it in the hand it is a touchable vinyl that feels great. It is a very curious thing how they achieved that in my opinion.Very well done and very admirable. It seems like the vinyl will last.I also am delighted with the good use of purple ink therein. The pages overall have three columns in a sense. The main center Bible text is a medium print, and if one is not sure what I mean by that, I would say then lean towards small. However, it is not microscopic at all.In fact at my age, I am delighted to see a study Bible like this that has still decent font size for the Bible text. And what I like most about the font is the ink usage. It seems to be, page to page, good strength ink...perhaps that is why it seems to work so well is the very ink usage makes the difference. In the inside of the pages are the cross references, which is a small font for sure.On the outside are the comments about some of the passages; text is also a little different but very readable as well.It is not bedecked with notes so there is plenty of marginal space still to add your own. There are additional features in this Bible that are already mentioned elsewhere about this Women of Faith Bible (other formats).Maps are also gorgeous. It has a real great feel while holding it to read.Yet, my only complaint is that I think we are experiencing a run of glued Bibles again.I just see it all over the place.Even so, knowing this, I bought this Bible.I just hope they change that again and find manufacturers that will sew the Bibles again.Unless, I am not comprehending how these are made, I still just don't get it.I know of others online who really like the sewn Bibles as well...and it seems that sewn Bibles will definitely last longer and be around long after others have fallen apart and been discarded. But don't let my soapbox rant deter you from this Bible. It also is a Bible where the writers know God and exalt Jesus as God.This is a worthy Bible in my opinion. However I have not read a lot of it yet to comment on the overall notes therein to give a summation of it in that way.I like it very much so far!!!I wrote this review so people can get a better idea of what they are looking at online when just seeing the photo.God bless you all in Jesus' Name. ... Product Description
The "Boomer Generation," long in the forefront of change, is looking for new models to reflect its attitudes about age. With Wise Talk, Wild Women, Gwen Mazer presents life stories of women who reflect a shift in ideas, beliefs, and feelings about age for the twenty-first century. Whether "sixty is the new forty" may be debatable, but there is no doubt that women now achieving the age of sixty and beyond are experiencing age differently than did their mothers and other women in previous generations.

This series of intimate conversations about life, love, and lessons learned takes place with women of diverse ethnicity and background. They include poet Nikki Giovanni, activist Dolores Huerta, teacher Jean Houston, and philanthropists, doctors, artists, and others who have created meaningful lives and are making a difference in the world. Through their frank accounts and the stunning portraits of Christine Alicino, we glimpse a world of possibility for continual growth that is empowering and exciting. It invites us to celebrate a stage of life rich with the grace and wisdom accumulated over a lifetime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good concept, presentation and scope....
I recently met Gwen Mazer at a book signing and was impressed with her work.It was a fascinating event mostly attended by women with many women over 60 and one very charismatic woman who was 99 and still going strong.I think this latter woman exemplifies the spirit this book is written as does the author.

The concept of the book is simple, it looks at different women's perspectives on aging, life, love, etc.The author uses a very personal style with rich, thick descriptions and quotations to bring to life a very inside or subjective perspective on these issues. The individual chapters also cover a broad range of cultures, levels of achievement, fields of expertise, etc.

I agree with Gwen that in many ways 60 is the new 40 for many people and attitudes towards aging across society are outdated. In fact, my understanding from the research on the aging brain is that how you expect to grow old is the number one determing factor in how the brain ages.If the 99 year old at the book signing event is any indication of human potential, then I think this may just right on target.

What you will come away from after reading this book is a different attitude towards aging and what is possible. It not only looks at individuals, but when taken as a collection presents a new cultural pattern emerging among women. As a man, I see this in my practice and I believe it is gathering momentum.I find it a litarlly a disgrace how many seniors are treated in our society.I also understand this is correlated with life expectancy and how people age.

If you are interested in references written for laypersons on the topic of brain aging try these: Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World's Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples and Healthy Aging: A Lifelong Guide to Your Well-Being,Making a Good Brain Great: The Amen Clinic Program for Achieving and Sustaining Optimal Mental Performance and The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain and Aging With Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives.

Finally, this book is a work of art. There is excellent photography which captures the spirit of the person in each chapter, it's printed on good quality paper and the design is carefully thought out.If you are at all interested in this area, I recommend this book for it's "real life" and "in the bones" approach. Many similar books do not have the lively spirit of this one, the breadth or the depth.

Wise Talk, Wild Women changed my life and was exactly what I needed to help me move forward into the next phase of my being. At age 60 I found myself completely stuck. My mother's life was so totally different from mine and I had few female relatives whose wisdom about this stage of life I could draw upon.Wise Talk, Wild Women is extremely well written and the comments by all of the women are focused on exactly the aspects of life for which I needed insight. Although all of the women are quite different from one another, each story had several components that I could relate to and one or two paralleled my life so closely it was almost eerie. It is hard to say what was most significant but it occurred to me as I read the book that I had completely lost sight of my own accomplishments. Reading about these women's lives helped me get back in touch with what I have done thus far and how I will use that to focus on the future. I also felt a strong kinship with these women because all have either dedicated their lives to or are now focused on the greater good, something that I have done and continue to do. Wise Talk, Wild Women was truly inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking Forward to Sixty and Beyond
This book is elegant. The writing is both graceful and inspirational. As someone who is not yet sixty, it makes me feel as if this is a period of my life I can look forward to. Each woman profiled in this book has lead an exceptionally fulfilling life, because she relied on her intuition to guide her rather than conforming to her family's or society's expectations of her. The photographs in this book have the quality of portraits; they seem to capture the essence of each woman's character. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem
I can't wait to start my day with a 30 min devotion with this book. It is thoughtfully organized. I like it how each key point is supplemented with bible verses for in-depth study and followed by commentaries to broaden my understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Bible study
I recently had the opportunity to review a new Bible study book by Cynthia Heald, Becoming a Woman of Grace (published by NavPress).

This is a great little Bible study tool. It's not very long, just 11 chapters, each only about 6 or 7 pages in length. But there is so much wisdom packed into this little book. Chapters include: "Set Free by Grace", "Growing in Grace", and "Becoming a Gracious Woman", among others. Each chapter is introduced with a bible scripture and a quote from a Christian author, then is followed by a number of questions on the topic of the chapter. Each question is brief and contains a Bible scripture to look up and reflect on.

I've read many, many Bible study books in my adult life, and this one is definitely one of my favorites.I especially like the fact that this study is relatively simple and short (a must-have for my busy Mom life), but it encouraged me to really dig into my Bible and consider what the scriptures have to say on a topic, not just read what someone else thinks about the scriptures.

I highly recommend this book as a great way to start your new year. You will be changed by it in the best possible way!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review program. I was not required to write a positive review. 5-0 out of 5 stars Such an encouraging, grace-filled study
I am half way through this study and I felt compelled to leave this review even before finishing.Every day, I look forward to doing this Bible study for my quiet times.Every day it challenges me to dig into the scriptures.A few years ago, I tried to do one of Cynthia Heald's studies and I set it down.Honestly, I think I was young and I wanted to be spoon fed.I put more stock in feeling and dwelling on my feelings as a woman.I used to do a lot of studies that encouraged me to infer into the Word and only ask you to look up single verses. But, over the years, I've learned a few things.

#1: It is important not to take verses out of context and short cut your way to an understanding of the Word.Take time to read the passage that a verse is in.
#2: Don't infer your own feelings into the Word.I know that statement could be taken a lot of ways and some people might disagree with me.But, what I mean is this--the Bible is about God.The stories that are included are meant to point us to Him.They are not intended to point us to ourselves. We cannot save ourselves.
#3: Be careful and don't get misled by how an author tells a story--don't read details into the Bible that aren't written in it.The story of Bathsheba is a clear example. You can think about what you think the story says and then go read it.You will likely be surprised about how little is actually said in the Bible about Bathsheba.

These three things guide much of how I feel about Bible studies.I hold onto them so that I won't become cynical. They are my way to fight cynicism about Bible Studies.

This Bible study is so good.Heald primarily looks to the Word and includes very wise quotes from other authors.(I have shared several with our small group and everyone has loved them.)She shares from her own experiences--but they are brief.Much more time is spent in the study with the reader digging into the word. She directs the reader to look up passages (most of the time) rather than a verse or two.In my selfish heart, I want to check the box and be given one or two verses to read, but that's why I know this study is so good for me to do--I have to look up passages (5-10 verses) at a time.

This study is about God's grace and how we love one another. The study delves into God's grace for us (His covenants with us), legalism vs. grace, love and grace, and what it means to live out our lives in God's grace. The chapter about legalism was especially good, but all of the chapters have been challenging and encouraging.I haven't found a Bible study in a very long time written for women that I would recommend--but now I have!

One last note...if you are a woman and you enjoy John Piper's, Jerry Bridge's, or Tim Keller's books and studies, I think you would particularly enjoy this study.

Please note, I did receive this book as a complimentary copy from Navpress, but it is one I would definitely have purchased on my own.I am sure I will be purchasing the other books in the series on my own, because I have enjoyed this study so much. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!
I purchased this book looking for something biblically sound but practical to grow my understanding of women's discipleship, intentional spiritual development, and then to help with my own walk in the Lord. OVERALL, Peace is very honest and approachable and the bible study that is included in the book points directly to Scripture as a means to develop understanding of The Word rather than someone else's convictions. WONDERFUL!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable lessons
Mrs. Peace takes the reader point by point, through the verses in Titus 2 to become the woman that God would have her to be. I felt some of her points and illustrations did not have the depth I would have liked. It does get the reader thinking, however, and considering how her life measures up to Scripture. A good study for the woman who wants to align her life with God's Word.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Study
This is a wonderful bible study and teaching tool for women. It is effective in preparing the older women to train the younger. The chapters are most enjoyable to read, and very informative, and the chapter questions are great for small group discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, excellent condition
The book took several weeks to be delivered, but itk arrived in perfect condition. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible Study Guide!
This book is a fun, easy read and an excellent source for learning how to conduct a group Bible Study and to effectively study the Bible on your own.I laugh out loud every page, and my husband is always asking what's so funny!Sadly, it is very woman focused, and I don't think he'd find it as funny as I do.I'm looking forward to checking out the other books in Jen Hatmaker's series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good!
My friend and I went through this book together online. We would do one chapter every other week. It took us quite a while to get through the book but it was worth it.

First of all, Jen Hatmaker is VERY funny. She is my kind of Christian Friend! She says all those things you might think but would never dare say. I love her!

Secondly, this girl loves God and His Word. She truly has inspired me to want to dig deeper.

I am inherently a lazy person when it comes to any kind of study, so what I'm about to say is not a reflection on the book or on Jen: I found some of the strategies/tools presented just overwhelming--getting another version of the Bible, comparing a verse to different versions, maybe getting a biblical dictionary, a thesaurus...to me it's a bit intimidating. Not that she says you have to do them all at once, I just tend to be an all or nothing kind of thinker, so I know it's my warped mind thinking, "if I can't do all of these things, I'm not doing any of them!" I **do** want to employ these tips but I'll probably be taking baby steps.

I am willing to at the very least journal my way through my reading of Scripture.

Definitely a must-have for a women's Bible study; it's fresh and enthusiastic.

4-0 out of 5 stars A riot!!
This book effectively captures your attention the first couple of chapters, drawing you in, letting you get to know the author, and rolling on the floor in laughter. Then it gets down to business, but still with laughs interspersed. It served to "jumpstart" my new bible study routine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you how to study with humor & warmth
I am so happy I found this study. When I was going through the reviews I didn't understand the difference between this book and Jen's other books, but ordered it anyway. I was thrilled to find out that this book works quadruple time! It's a novel about learning how to study God's word, full of anecdotes, humour, insight and warmth. It's a study guide with a six week course that has journal exercises for you and teaches you how to conduct your own study of the bible, for you, without a net. It's a small group's leader guide so you can work through it alone or with friends AND it has three different 4 - 6 week reading schedules to start you off on your own study after you've read her guidance.

As someone who is starting to study the bible for the first time, I couldn't have asked for a better guide. I definitely recommend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Life Management For Busy Women
I am leading this study with the ladies at my church. We are growing together as friends, and learning some very important principles for life.I'd highly recommend this study..

1-0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth George = Religious Martha Stewart
I am very sure that Elizabeth George is a well-meaning person. However, she is a person who mis-uses scripture and is quite legalistic in her tone. She uses guilt, but in lace-laden terms (so it's harder to pick up on). These chapters are no more than "to do" lists, that'll leave you feeling more inadequate than you did before you started the book. She has quotes in Busy Women like, "...a sloppy place or home speaks of a sloppy faith."That is wrong and quite judgemental.I can't even imagine Jesus speaking to someone like this. And to top it all off, she has this whole book devoted to various facets of a busy woman's life, and she doesn't give any advice on working outside the home. In fact, she implies you're not doing what's right if you're not at home as much as possible: "Pinpoint and count exactly how many hours you are scheduled out of the house. Then reduce them drastically so that you can "be there." "

I'm glad some women have been inspired by her, but I've met just as many who have walked away from Elizabeth George's books feeling guilty and destined for failure.

Jesus complimented Mary.Elizabeth George wants every woman to be another Martha.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Management for Busy Women
This book is truly an inspiring book. It really gives us focus as a busy women. It gives great principle and disciplines to live by. It sure change my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have to go along with book!

I highly recommend it and wouldn't recommend the book without it, you would miss half of the scripture/application. Product Description
Now reissued in an expanded edition, this unique book offers the first full-length treatment of women's initiation rites in five cultures. Asserting the critical importance of such rites in a world dominated by men, Lincoln shows that in these societies women's initiation involves not only a transformation of the self but also of the cosmos. Considering initiation rites among the Tiyyar of South India, the Navajo, the Tiv of West Africa, and the Tukuna of the Northwest Amazon, Lincoln argues that unlike men's rites, women's rites do not impart a change in hierarchical status, but rather a "cosmic" change which offers religious compensation for women's generally low socio-political status. Lincoln concludes with a brilliant reconstruction of ancient Greek initiation rites based on his original interpretation of the Demeter and Persephone myth. With a new chapter and bibliography, Emerging from the Chrysalis will be stimulating reading for those interested in ritual and its cultural impact. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous study on marriage!
This is the best Bible study workbook I've ever done.It is God-focused, intensely practical, packed with Scripture and convicting in a positive and motivating way.Its emphasis is on our relationship with Christ as the foundation for contentment and blessing in marriage. As the author states so well at the start, "The degree to which you know and love God is the degree to which you can know and truly love your husband."Judy Rossi is an excellent communicator and keenly perceptive about relationships. She asks very pointed and life-impacting questions throughout the book and zeroes in very specifically on areas critical to a revived marriage and a revived walk with God.Each chapter is skillfully crafted to build the anticipation of new hope for any marriage. This is not a quick "fly by" book.It digs deep on many levels, covering topics such as communication, forgiveness and intimacy.I could not recommend it more highly and have in fact recommended it to many friends, who have had very similar reactions to mine.If you are seeking God's help for your marriage, you will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Transformed my marriage and my life
I am thankful beyond measure for Judy Rossi and her work in Enhancing Your Marriage. The book was recommended to me by a friend and she baited me by sharing some of what the Lord was doing in her own marriage thru the book.I took the bait and am grateful, grateful, grateful. I think my husband is rejoicing as well.Judy is very transparent and shares much from her own life which is always something I appreciate and need.I see so much of the wisdom of God in her writing and found this to be especially so in the way she has laid out the text. I bought the book for several friends and find myself wanting to call them and say, "Go to chapter 7 and look at this nugget."Then I am reminded by the Lord that the work is carefully laid out and that the reader might not be ready with a teachable heart for chapter 7 if they haven't gone thru the other chapters first. I have asked my husband to read my efforts after I complete a chapter and this has really ministered and enhanced our marriage immensely. The Lord has given me much in the way of grace to seek Him for a transformed life thru this text and renewing my mind that I might see my marriage from His perspective.I could write a book myself on all the ways that the Lord has blessed me and my marriage thru Enhancing Your Marriage and I am grateful to the Lord for Judy Rossi beyond expression!

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing study sure to encourageyou in your marriage!
I thought I had a pretty good marriage going in to this study. What I learned is that it could be BETTER!The study begins with an in-depth look in to the truth of who I am in Christ - what He says about me - what He expects of me as a wife.So often we get hung up on the changes we hope our spouses will make.I learned to be all that God wanted me to be and then to stay out of the way and trust Him to change my husband!Judy's materials are challenging, encouraging, relevent and honest! You will be a different woman at the end than you were at the start!

5-0 out of 5 stars Accidentally Inspired
I was invited to this study by a friend not knowing how in depth the book would take me.I must say that I was accidentally inspired, surprised, and amazed by how much I have learned. This book is a valuable tool and will continue to be a resource on my bookshelf for a lifetime. The book is one that I have shared with many friends and believe that it is a wonderful study in a group and can be completed individually.Enhancing Your Marriage brings new perspective to marriage trials and needs, family, and our personal foundation/relationship with God.I highly recommend this study to all ages and at any stage of marriage.Judy writes in a wonderful way that is down to earth and understandable while keeping biblical principles at the root of teaching.A great read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOMENESS!
I actually taught this Bible Study and it was absolutely amazing! It was amazing watching the women in the study go from fearful to faithful in regards to their marriages. This Bible Study is unique in many ways, one being that it actually uses the Bible! It makes you take the intent of God's Word and apply it to your everyday life. There is no wiggle room for your emotions or suggestions for improvement on God's Word. The Word of God is front and center and you must submit to it.The transformed women in my Bible Study will never be the same. Our marriages may never achieve perfection but, we definantly will never be the same.I say buy it, read it, DO IT! If you are ready for God to begin to move in your marriage, just DO IT! ... Read more

The title of the book was the initial attraction. This is something I had trouble doing for several years after accepting Christ as my Savior. I always had the nagging voice of the enemy telling me I could never be totally free of my past wrongs.

Chapter by chapter the book points out so many scriptures of how much God loves us and what He promises and tells us. There are short comments from other women too.I was finally able to break free of that past and truly receive His love without a doubt left.

This book will is great for great group study or individual study. Each chapter has about 7-10 questions or comments with focused scripture, and there's a leader's guide at the end with answers and additional comments.

I am ordering another topic of study today, and going to the Women of Faith conference this year in Tampa. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas
I really liked this book. This is a great book of ideas whether your church is large or small.A lot of books I have read, have catered to larger churches only.I liked the little side notes for smaller churches.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a mid-size or larger church
I found this book in our library. "Ah, just what I've been looking for," I said to myself. And it might have been if I belonged to a larger church than I do. To me a team consists of at least 3 people, but when I multiplied that by the several teams needed for each activity, I realized that my church simply isn't big enough to fit the structure suggested in this book. But I'll keep looking, because I KNOW there are books out there written for small churches like mine. I just have to find them!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas for women's ministry
The book strikes me as more focused on "surface programming" rather than on real ministry. There are some good ideas but I don't find much that I can incorporate with our ladies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the BEST Resource of Its Kind - Inspirational, Purposeful, Impactful
I recently purchased several (>5) books on getting a women's ministry started or going again... and of all the books I purchased, THIS ONE is the one that provided me with the most inspiration and ideas. It truly contains "fresh ideas" and "creative plans"!

Using this book as my guide, I put together a five-month plan to radically upgrade our church's women's ministry, and presented that plan to our pastor. We've been a small congregation that started growing rapidly, so we need to take our current women's ministry to the next level and grow with our congregation -- their needs and our church's ministry needs. I'm in the process of implementing that plan with our pastor and the church staff -- all of whom were impressed with the concise, thorough plan. I told them that this book provided the inspiration, ideas, and templates.

As I read through the book, so much of it resonated with me -- so many of the ideas and tips gave voice and validation to my own hopes and plans for reviving our women's ministry. The easy-to-follow examples and templates for surveys, leadership position descriptions/duties, classes, ministry opportunities, and more helped me to quickly put it all together.

Throughout the book, the author emphasizes that women's ministries need to be more than social clubs. To truly be a WOMEN'S MINISTRY, it needs to be about ME, US (church and community), and HIM. A well-balanced women's ministry more than meets each woman's need for fellowship, it helps to cement life-long friendships, diversity, teamwork, and most of all, purpose -- taking our rightful place as the body of Christ to minister to one another, to our community, and to our world. And it's not as difficult as it sounds! The author has laid out sound biblical principles, spiritual advice (pray! get your pastor's buy-in immediately), and ideas on how to apply these ideas and plans to every church, whether building a new ministry or reviving an existing one -- for any size church! ...
