Editorial Review

Product Description
A study of the north east of England. It has its intellectual origins in its editors' interest in debates about the "re-emergence" of the region as a basic unit of economic analysis and as the sphere most suited to the interaction of political, social and economic processes in an era of "globalization". It is also borne out of an interest in the changing pattern of territorial relationships in the UK and the implications of this for the English regions in general and the north east of England in particular. The origin of the papers lies in a seminar held at Newcastle University in 1998, designed to assess (and demonstrate) the breadth of research with a regional focus. The meeting involved researchers from six of the University's nine faculties, although the focus was strongly a social science one. One aim of the meeting was to bring together diverse researchers whose work was focused on the north east region or some geographical component of it. A second hope was that common themes and insights would emerge from the discussions.A third aim was to make at least a modest contribution to the University's objective of strengthening and focusing its engagement with wider interests in the north east beyond the ivory towers of academia. ... Product Description
If European reality is essentially urban, what is the meaning of the urban notion today? Which new changes have occurred in the urban structures during the last 15-20 years - that is after the intensive urbanization of the post-war period? Which new ways of organizing urban space have developed? Which changes have taken place in urban life? What are the new roles of cities in the economic globalization process? How can cities manage both the economic competition and social cohesion? What impacts do these changes have on have on the social structure? Is there an increasing social and spatial fragmentation of cities? What effects do these developments have on the managment of cities and urban policies? How do these changes exacerbate the welfare and fiscal crises that affect the government of cities? Which new forms of urban governance have appeared? Throughout this book many of these questions are answered or at least are attempted to be answered. This work explores the transformation of European cities and their way of governing themselves. The transformation is related to the question of urban infrastructure, giving particular attention to the transport and communication systems.Using many examples from European cities, this book focuses on the structuring roles of these urban infrastructures on the social, economic and ecological performance of the cities in the long term. It underlines the fact that these infrastructures support strategies, both from a functional point of view - the question of urban accessibility - and from the perspective of managing and governing urban space. ... Product Description
Throughout both Western Europe and the former Soviet bloc, there has been a transition away from traditional heavy industry in certain peripheral areas. This has necessitated a complete restructuring of local economies of such regions. This volume brings together researchers and practitioners from Scotland and Poland to compare their experiences of regional development and restructuring in areas of former heavy industry. As Poland approaches EU entry, the comparisons have greater salience; the Polish are eager to learn from Western experience while the West will become more involved in Central European development. The book is divided into four main sections: the first examining economic transformation and restructuring; the second focusing on social partnerships and their role in regional economic development; the third looking at enterprise initiatives and development; and the final section questioning the role of FDI. It concludes by bringing together the findings from both countries, critically analysing the different policies, incentives and multi-level structures involved in regional economic development. In doing so, it aims to provide a fresh perspective on the relevant policy matters and stresses the importance of building appropriate institutional capacity to promote development. ... Product Description
Although the struggle for independence in colonial Africa was characterized by pronouncements unconditionally condemning imperialism and promising to eliminate all vestiges of European domination, the post-colonial leaders, almost without exception, decided in favour of adopting European models of development. Thus, despite rhetoric to the contrary, development policies in post-colonial Africa continues to reflect and embody Western-especially European-Values.Nowhere else is this assertion more tenable than in the area of urban and regional planning, where the models were either inherited from the departing colonial administration or have recently been borrowed from some metropolitan country.Yet to receive the same degree of attention are questions relating to the rationale for adopting such models on the part of post-colonial states. In other words, crucial questions such as the following remain largely unanswered. Why have authorities in post-colonial states decided in favour of European or Western planning models? What are the implications for different societal groups of adopting such models? The main objective of this book is to attempt to uncover answers to these and cognate questions. The empirical referent of the project is Cameroon. The country's history-being the only African country to have been colonized by three different European powers, Germany, Britain and France-make it ideally suitable as a context for exploring questions of the genre raised above.
