Product Description
The Encyclopedia of Social Work, 19th Edition is the field's most comprehensive reference work for the general knowledge base of the profession. Three volumes provide nearly 3,000 pages of information on virtually every aspect of social work.

All of the 19th edition's 290 entries are new, and several areas of interest are covered in greater depth than before. Expanded content areas include new technologies, research, global changes, U.S. policy developments, evolving roles for social workers, and knowledge development.

The editors of the 19th edition included more entries on women and people of color and increased the diversity in the Encyclopedia's authorship. Of the over 300 contributors--academics or social work practitioners--the majority are women, and one-quarter are authors of color.

Each volume contains a complete table of contents and full index. "Reader's Guides" list all the entries that relate to a topic. "See" references lead readers to specific entries, and "See Also" references ensure that they find all the information related to a topic. Key words for each entry provide another search tool to help readers find content.

The Encyclopedia is a solid investment that will provide years of practical service as a one-stop resource for looking up facts, preparing papers, supplementing course work, initiating literature searches, and informing social work practice.

Product Description

Written for social workers by a social worker,Mental Disorders, Medications, and Clinical Social Work discusses the etiology, epidemiology, assessment, and intervention planning for common mental disorders. Looking at disorders from an ecosystems perspective, Austrian goes beyond a linear classification approach and DSM-IV-TR categories and encourages social workers to analyze the internal and external environmental factors that contribute to a disorder's development. Austrian's discussion of effective intervention(s) for a particular client also stresses the importance of working with families in treating disorders.

In addition to information on new medications, biochemical data on the causes of disease, and diagnostic tests, the revised third edition discusses therapies such as motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and dialectic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, Useful, and Relevent
I've kept this book close by since I purchased it in 2002.It is a great resource for students as well as practicing clinicians.I have incorporated this volume in my regular study regimen. For each chapter of the DSM-IV-TR I read the corresponding chapters in the following texts: Austrian's Book, Morrison's "DSM-IV Made Easy", Carson, Butcher & Mineka's "Abnormal Psychology and Modern Life", and lastly the "Oxford Textbook of Psychotherapy", by Gabbard, Beck, & Holmes. I have found each of the noted 5 texts immeasurably helpful in my development as a clinician & psychotherapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful learning tool
I am an MSW student and have found this book extremely helpful as I concomitantly study the DSM-IV-TR.Combining the reading of, for example, anxiety disorders in the DSM with Austrian's chapter on anxiety disorders helps clarify assessment criteria.I don't believe the purpose of her book is to discuss the shortfalls of the DSM but rather to aid social workers in gaining a better grasp of its contents.I see her introduction as a disclaimer. The DSM is a necessary evil - whether we like it or not, many of us work in environments where its use is unavoidable.Given that, Austrian provides her opinion, rightfully in the introduction, and then gets down to business with the purpose of the book.I do recommend this book for people wanting to learn, but can't speak for those who feel they have already learned it all.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
I was excited to find this volume, thinking that it would provide me with information to provide accurate and complete assessments of persons with mental illnesses, or mental disorders, as the book labels them. The introduction advises the social worker that classification systems are notcompatible with complete, psychosocial assessments that social workers aretrained to do.The author discusses how social workers have moved fromlinear approaches to client problems to the ecosystems approach, which, inher opinion, will help the clinical social worker develop a more inclusiveassessment and help the worker and client select more appropriateinterventions. She ends the introduction imploring social workers to"be true to the purpose of our profession, and not fall into theclassification trap" (pg. 8).She then proceeds, without irony, todescrbe the current DSM-IV classifications of anxiety, mood, somatoform& fictitious, dissociative, substance-related, and eating disorders, aswell as schizophrenia, delirium, dementia, and amnestic and other cogntivedisorders. It is unclear how she has integrated the ecosystems approachinto these chapters, but she does instruct on how the disorders arediagnosed. These chapters will certainly be useful to beginningpractitioners and students who need to learn the differences between thedisorders, as well as some basic information on psychosocial interventions. However, I feel the author has missed an opportunity to clearlydifferentiate clinical social work from the other mental healthprofessions. The book starts out as a treatise for why the DSM-IV shouldnot be a tool for social workers to use in their assessments, then attemptsto teach them how to diagnose the disorders according to that very samebook.I would recommend that social workers instead read Herb Kutchins andStuart A. Kirk's "Making Us Crazy," which clearly demonstratesthat social workers and other practitioners that the DSM is a flawedtool.

The chapter on medications will also be helpful for beginners, asit talks about the different types of medications, what they are used for,and the side effects expected from the medications. However, Kia J.Bentley and J. Michael Walsh's "The Social Worker and PsychotropicMedication: Toward Effective Collaboration with Mental Health Clients,Families, and Providers" does a far better job of describing thesocial worker's role with medication in the mental health field.

Thiswork is hailed on the cover as the first of its kind and indispensable, yetI find it flawed for any but the most beginning of practitioners.Socialworkers looking for more than the party line must look elsewhere. Therefore, I cannot recommend this book. ... Read more

Product Description
This purpose of this paper is to place evidence-based practice (EBP) within its wider scholarly contexts and to draw lessons from the experiences of other professions that are engaged in implementing it. The analysis is based primarily on evidence-based medicine, the parent discipline of evidence-based practice, but I also draw upon evidence-based nursing and evidence-based social work in the United Kingdom. I found that the experiences of other practice professions have a great deal to offer social work practice. Like medicine, nursing, and our British colleagues, U.S. social work practice will benefit from increased research activity, more wide-spread availability of reviews of research, on-line resources, and many more training opportunities.Like nursing administrators, social work administrators have the responsibility to allow social worker practitioners the time to become familiar with research relevant to their practice. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
In my opinion, this poorly edited textbook was extremely unreadable owing to numerous grammatical and spelling errors that distracted me from learning about the concept of family social work, which is different from family therapy(one of the few things I learned from this text). The subject index is not comprehensive or cross-referenced with other subjects - it has spelling errors, too.Other than some useful tools a social worker could use in family social work detailed in some sections of the quantitative and qualitative chapters measurement chapters, I found this book to be a reformulation of ideas co-opted from better-written family therapy texts. The only reason why I will keep this book is to recover the price I paid for it - $90 - and as a SECONDARY reference, if I refer to it at all.

Product Description

Museums may not seem at first glance to be engaged in social work. Yet, Lois H. Silverman brings together here relevant visitor studies, trends in international practice, and compelling examples that demonstrate how museums everywhere are using their unique resources to benefit human relationships and, ultimately, to repair the world. In this groundbreaking book, Silverman forges a framework of key social work perspectives to show how museums are evolving a needs-based approach to provide what promises to be universal social service. In partnership with social workers, social agencies, and clients, museums are helping people cope and even thrive in circumstances ranging from personal challenges to social injustices. The Social Work of Museums provides the first integrative survey of this emerging interdisciplinary practice and an essential foundation on which to build for the future.

The Social Work of Museums is not only a vital and visionary resource for museum training and practice in the 21st century, but also an invaluable tool for social workers, creative arts therapists, and students seeking to broaden their horizons. It will inspire and empower policymakers, directors, clinicians, and evaluators alike to work together toward museums for the next age.

Contemporary Human Behavior Theory: A Critical Perspective for Social Work, 2/e

is the first HSBE text to approach the subject from a comparative theory perspective, providing coverage of the most current and contemporary theories as well as traditional theories. A consistent framework for analysis is provided for all of the theoretical systems that are covered. • Ecofeminism
  • Neurobiology, neurotransmission and behavior

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretentiously written and difficult to understand
As a person with a reputation for using "big words" amongst my family and friends, I found this textbook to be unnecessarily difficult to understand. The authors tend to be biased toward certain theorists and theories instead of presenting the material objectively, and some chapters seemed to piece together strings of quotes from other authors (I don't know about you, but that's what I do when I'm not quite sure I'm grasping something). The chapter on phenomenology in particular was EXTREMELY difficult to understand what the authors were saying.I have my BA in Psychology and have been exposed to some of the theories presented in the textbook, so it was easier for me to understand certain chapters better than others, but without my previous training I would have struggled with those chapters as well. The structure and topics covered were good, just not written to be student-friendly.My 5 MSW classmates agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the time
This book is an outstanding overview of a huge range of social theory/human behavior theory. It is true that some of the chapters are challenging, but I felt this was because the authors truly presented well-thought out, exhaustive synopses of each theory. This book not only was clear in presenting information about theories I was unfamiliar with in an effective way, but also presented interesting insights and great review of theories that I was already very familiar with.Considering how much is information is covered in this text density is to be expected, but it is well worth it!

Additionally, I was also impresssed with the discussion on group phases and how to faciliate family sessions.

Product Description

This primary text for advanced clinical practice courses at the core of the Master of Social Work curriculum teaches students how to integrate theory and practice on multiple levels.

Building on the foundation of generalist courses, this student-friendly text addresses assessment within a theoretical framework that considers the use of DSM-IV and the mental status exam; includes a walkthrough of a clinical interview and the stages of treatment; and examines models of treatment. The chapter on developing the psychosocial study includes a model that walks the student through the process.

Richly diverse case studies, drawn from practice experience, are integrated throughout and show how theory is applied to work with individuals, families, groups, and children and adolescents. Each chapter also includes learning activities, role-plays, and assignments that will help students master the content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart of Helping for classroom instruction
I think this is a great text for teaching "Spirituality" and Social work. It takes the profession into consideration while introducing the topics of spirituality, skill sets for assessing spirituality in an accessible manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars well written, balanced, and long overdue for social work
This text is a wonderful antidote to the anti-religious Marxist/Feminist tracts that permeated my social work education. For those who work with real suffering people an understand of spiritual diversity, and an abilityto reflect on our own biases and preconceptions, is essential for creatinga truly empowering alliance with clients. All I heard about spirituality ingraduate school was that all (!) religion was an oppressive, patriarchalinstitution that deserved contempt. This is very sad. I am grateful thatthis book was written, especially with its emphasis on experientiallearning and self reflection. I hope it gets the wide audience it deservesin social work education programs. Nine bows of gratitude to the authors!

Product Description
Restorative justice and social work share a number of principles and goals, as they both seek to stem violence and to address the pain associated with harm. Many of the processes used by restorative justice practitioners are based on indigenous practices that facilitate peacemaking, victim healing and reparation, and reengagement of offenders. As a method for transforming conflict, restorative justice can be viewed as a theory, a principle, a practice, and a skill set. Each of these components has the ability to inform and strengthen social work practice and restorative practices can be enhanced by the knowledge, practice modes, and interdisciplinary interaction pioneered by social work.

As the first book of its kind, Social Work and Restorative Justice examines the ways that these two disciplines intersect. Each chapter engages readers in an in-depth exploration of the history and contemporary realities of both disciplines, presenting vivid case studies in practice areas such as school settings, communities, domestic violence, homicide, prisons, child welfare, and gerontology. Social workers and restorative justice practitioners collaborate on each chapter, outlining specific intervention approaches and practice principles that integrate the strengths of each approach in cases ranging from the commonplace contradiction of punishing public school students for behavioral problems by depriving them of the opportunity to learn from their mistakes to the role that both social work and restorative processes have played in the rebuilding of Liberia. In a holistic and critical exploration of how these fields can work together more effectively, the book's authors also importantly highlight tensions between their values, skills, and interventions, such as the risks and benefits of employing restorative justice techniques in a prison setting.

Innovative and forward thinking, Social Work and Restorative Justice presents a synergistic practice model that will improve the effectiveness of social workers and restorative justice practitioners who seek to bring about healing and recovery in families and communities. ... Read more
