Product Description
Using Statistics in Social Work Practice is a practical basic statistics book intended for social workers who want or need to learn SPSS. Instead of focusing on the memorization of formulas, the author discusses the purpose of each statistical test, the rationale social workers may have for choosing it, and the assumptions made by each test. Each statistical test is accompanied by an example particular to the field of social work. The book teaches students how to use SPSS to run each test, read its output, interpret, and write the results.

A database prepared by the author is available on the Web for those who have access to SPSS software. Lyceum Books also offers a bound set of the book and a CD containing licensed SPSS software. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for beginner
This book is useful to those without much statistics background. The contents are quite concise and deliver in simple terms with examples. Unlike other tool guides on SPSS, the examples cited in the book are especially relevant to soical work and the beginner can either apply directly or modify from it. For readers who already have some background/training on statistics, this book may not have much added value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I got it within 10 days. A very clean book.
The book is very new and I got it within 10 days. Pleased having it.

5-0 out of 5 stars good guidance for sociologists and other social scientists
This book covers all you need as a beginner learning about research methodology for social science and social work.

As an Economics student doing a course in research design I decided to use this book instead of a book on business research - since in my opinion Economics is a social science, and also because I focus on economic demography and development economics.

The book covers what most good books on research design covers: ethics, problem formulation, qualitative and quantitative research design etc.
In this sense it is similar to most books on this subject.
The main difference lies in the application: this book focuses on issues related to social work and sociology in general.
For example, some of the topics covered deal with child-abuse, depression in people, racism and so on.

Another positive thing about the book is its coverage of culturally competent research, this is something that few of the books I have looked at even mention. This is important to know about if you will work with people who are culturally different from you, whether you are a social worker in the field or an academic designing a survey of people in a different country.

The appendix also has a very good guide on how to do practical research using SPSS, the most popular program used for social research. For example it shows you how to do various pie-charts and how to do the statistical analysis introduced in the chapters.

This book is relevant to anyone who will research human behavioral attributes - whether you are a sociologist, psychologist, demographer, economist, or a social worker in the field. It's a book both academics and field-workers can use.

The explanations are very clear with many examples of the concepts, one might even argue that they gives too many examples.

The content of this book (my edition is the 2005 edition):
1. An Introduction to Inquiry
2. Problem Formulation and Measurement
3. Sampling and Surveys
4. Designs for Evaluating Programs and Practice
5. Qualitative, Unobtrusive, and Culturally Competent Research Methods
6. Analysis of Data
7. Writing Research Proposals and Reports

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read, especially for a research textbook!
This textbook is well written with clear examples that help the reader to understand the content. Social Workers are notorious for shying away from research and math, but this book is very social worker-friendly. I actually enjoy reading it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor service
It is over a month since I have purchased the text book "Abnormal Psychology' and haven't receive it as yet. I would like to have the money return to my account and let the seller keep his book. This is rediculous. I do not know if this is a prank, or if he is walking cross country to deliver the book himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eda Goldstein & Ego Psychology
Eda Goldstein does a great job of describing, in detail, Ego Psychology from a historical, theoretical, and practical perspective. I was particularly fond of Part II dealing with the ego and its functions and defenses. She writes with a clarity that is difficult to find when reading books dealing with detailed theoretical perspectives. I would highly recommend this book to socials workers and pyschologists alike. It is a wealth of information that you will find yourself referencing again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Ego Psychological Theory
Dr. Goldstein's book provides students with a survey of the major contributors to ego psychological theory. To her credit, she manages to effectively communicate sometimes difficult material without resorting to the complicated jargon that one often finds in similar psychoanalytic texts.Ego Psychology and Social Work Practice 2nd Edition enables beginners to appreciate some of the insights of the ego psychologists without having to read and interpret the original texts. This would be a daunting task and unnecessarily laborious for a beginning student. It also provides more experienced clinicians the opportunity to review material germane to clinical practice or as an accompaniment to more advanced reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best!!
Hot-n-hulky Eda Goldstein has written a classic for mental health practitioners. A skillful integration of Ego Psychology practice and treatment. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for BIPs and Creating Goals
This book is great for BIPs and creating goals for students. It's also I good way to get ideas for treatment. The Child and Adolescent Treatment Planners are also very handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice clean transaction!
This was a very clean and satisfactory transaction! The book was in emaculent condition, would buy from this seller again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interventions useful, relevant and easy to apply
I found The School Counseling and Social Work Treatment Planner follows the same formula as all of the other therapeutic treatment planners co-authored by Art Jongsma which have been exceptionally well received by the therapeutic community as a whole. The treatment planners are extensively edited by the co-authors and then rigorously twice again by the well respected publisher, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hobocken, NJ.
The customer review by Sally Powers October 5, 2007 indicates that there are editing errors and that the therapeutic interventions are repeated and not sequential. All Therapeutic interventions are in sequential order, however, the suggested interventions that coordinate with the short-term objectives are at times repeated because they apply to more than one objective. This allows the school counselor or social worker to create a treatment plan or informal counseling framework that addresses the specific needs of the student. The process for using this treatment planner is explained in detail in the Treatment Plan Utility which begins on page 3 and in the section How To Use This Planner on page 7. When the Treatment Planner is then used according to these guidelines, many helpful treatment guidelines are offerred to the School Counselor or School Social Worker dealing with common and unique problems presented by today's student population.I suggest a thorough reading of the introduction before formulating a school social work or counseling plan. The definitions, long-term goals, short term objectives and therapeutic interventions can then easily and sytematically be applied to assist sutdents or various ages and treatment issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best treatment planner for school counselors.
As a school counselor/therapist, I find that this planner bridges the divide between school counseling and psychotherapy. It is much more useful in a school setting than the Adolescent Treatment Planner as it is organized by presenting problem rather than DSM diagnosis (e.g. attention-seeking behavior, self-esteem building, sexual responsibility). However,DSM diagnostic suggestions are also included for each presenting problem. Treatment goals and interventions are clearly outlined and practical. Yes, some interventions are obvious, but there are dozens of additional interventions as well. In a school setting where time is limited, this book helps me quickly outline my treatment plan and stay focused so that I am working in a more efficient manner. This book has saved me a lot of time and helped me conceptualize school-based therapy in a more practical way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Behavior social Environment
I bought this product because it is required for school, and it is very informative. I enjoyed reading this text book and have learned alot from this material. I would recommend this to any Msw students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast delivery
The book is depressing and dry (required reading for my MSW), but delivery was faster than projected and the quality of the book is exactly as described

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money-rent it
I had to purchase this book for my MSW program. Unfortunately, since the book was just released this year, there were no "used" copies available. This book is AWFUL!! By far the worst textbook I have ever had the misfortune of owning. It's so bad I can't even force myself to read it. Schriver (repeatedly) talks about the origins of words [who cares] and lists 3-4 definitions for each one. "Smith says it's this.... whereas Jones defines it as..." and so on. Pick one already! Rent it if you can. Not worth owning.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a flaming pile of pseudo-intellectual crap.
I have always considered myself an open-minded person, one who is willing to engage in conversation with people of all views from far left to far right, but sometimes you have to draw a line. There are themes in this book comparable to the dumb dums who deny the existence of the holocaust. If you look at nothing else be sure to read pages 51-55 where all of the world's woes are blamed on white Christian heteral sexual males.

Unfortunately people of all creeds, all colors and religions, etc have done horrible things throughout our human history; most of this conflict has been same color vs. same color of people.

Get your facts right, get beyond an agenda, don't buy into the reverse racism polices of affirmative action, creating clubs or events based on race or color, if you want equality don't hide behind the garbage. Instead get into the real world, treat others as you would be treated, earn things, and don't take things from people because they say you're disadvantaged and essentially not as bright as others, so your test score gets a curve.

So many things are sensationalized and uber-hyped today and given more prominence to all the empty-headed know-it-alls that fill classrooms throughout our great nation, but let's face it, if you continue to teach with a one-sided agenda, continue to teach one small part of a story as the whole story then you brainwash people to blame others for their problems. I see this every day in my work, in the classes I have taken, enough is enough.
In short YOU are responsible for continuing the cycle of hate that has divided our world along so many lines and denies us the progress we need as humanity.

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the Top 10 Worst Textbooks Ever!
Arguably, this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever had the displeasure of having to read. For the life of me, I can't understand why my instructor would select such a terrible book when there are others that are much better. Schriver uses an annoying technique of citing other people's work to try and explain terms when he should simply define them himself. In fact the book is rife with citations that attempt to explain theories, methods and research but instead of clarifying points, this method makes it more confusing. Somebody forgot to tell Schriver that citations are meant to support his points, not make them for him. All in all, it's an extremely choppy read that ends up saying nothing. He also uses multiple paragraphs to explain what he is about to explain and when done reading, I couldn't help but wonder what point he was trying to make. I have no idea how Schriver got this book published, but it's a crime that a qualified editor allowed such tripe to make it into the hands of students that are actually trying to learn. You won't get much out of this book; take a pass unless you are required to buy this book for a class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Social Media: A book for the rest of us
Recently Arthur Jue was a guest speaker at a Milpitas Chamber event which I couldn't attend. I heard from members who attended and they just raved about how social media really made sense to them now and they want to take action.

So, I bought 'the book' and finished it in two days. Easy to read and chocked full of real case studies on how social media has made a difference in the work place. This truly is for those who've been trying to figure out what all the buzz is about social media and how to use these tools to improve business performance and as a competitive advantage with clients/customers.

A time worth spent obsorbing all the great tips to propel an organization.

If you're a clinical social worker, you should own this book.Chances are, it'll be assigned to you at some point in your degree program anyway.Might as well buy it to have it on-hand for when that happens.Plus, you'll need it to study for your licensure exam.Buy it, read it, enjoy it, and learn from it. ... Product Description

Hospital Social Work introduces the reader to the world of medicine and social work as seen through the eyes of actual social workers. An essential reference for both students and professionals.

Over 100 social workers in dozens of hospitals were interviewed to provide the reader with first-hand experiences and discussions of practice principles, policy considerations, and theoretical treatments to provide each chapter with a unique blend of theory and practice.

Joan Beder, a professor of social work and a practicing social worker, recently noted an apparent lack of empirical discussion of the actual role and day-to-day functioning of the medical social worker. Hospital Social Work is the result, a unique supplemental text for both studying and practicing medical social workers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
After being out of undergraduate studies a few years, I was anxious about applying to an MSW program without help from professors or adviors that I would have had as help going straight from B.A. to a graduate program. But this book made up for lack of interpesonal connections to guide me through the application process.

The book was a very easy read, but with many great resources and suggestions for figuring out concentration areas, the supplemental statment, and even in reminders on common courtesy one might forget in the midst of anxiety.

This book was a great resource for me. Although you still need to put in all the work, this author gives someone with little other guidance a great outline for the process.I recently was admitted to a top MSW program and my book shows it...dog-eared, bent, highlighted...well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
My wife is looking at where she wants to get her MSW, and this book was a tremendous help! It does a great job of explaining the process, as well as providing valuable reference information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful material!
As an undergraduate preparing to apply for graduate school, I was frustrated with the lack of material about social work programs. This book has so far been my most useful purchase concerning my application to gradschool. It contains an informative general section about MSW programs, andthen breaks down the admission and application process so that it is clearand understandable. There are also charts in the back to help monitor yourapplication progress. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is buriedunder MSW paperwork and needs some direction and clarity in applying toschools. ... Read more
