Product Description
Evaluation is crucial for determining the effectiveness of social programs and interventions. In this nuts and bolts handbook, social work and health care professionals are shown how evaluations should be done, taking the intimidation and guesswork out of this essential task. Current perspectives in social work and health practice, such as the strengths perspective, consumer empowerment, empowerment evaluation, and evidence-based practice, are linked to evaluation concepts throughout the book to emphasize their importance.

This book makes evaluation come alive with comprehensive examples of each different type of evaluation, such as a strengths-based needs assessment in a local community, a needs assessment for Child Health Plus programs, comprehensive program descriptions of HIV services and community services for the aged, a model for goals and objectives in programs for people with mental illness, a monitoring study of private practice social work, and process evaluations of a Medicare advocacy program and a health advocacy program to explain advance directives. Equal emphasis is given to both quantitative and qualitative data analysis with real examples that make statistics and concepts in qualitative analysis un-intimidating.

By integrating both evaluation and research methods and assuming no previous knowledge of research, this book makes an excellent reference for professionals working in social work and health settings who are now being called upon to conduct or supervise program evaluation and may need a refresher on research methods. With a pragmatic approach that includes survey design, data collection methods, sampling, analysis, and report writing, it is also an excellent text or classroom resource for students new to the field of program evaluation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for child welfare administrators
This is a "must read" for all administrators in social service or health settings. It is a skillful blending of information and examples on a challenging subject matter-using research to create effective programs for clients.Topics such as planning and needs assessment studies and designing and implementing the evaluation that is right for your agency are critical issues for programs today, particularly in light of the need to show indicators of success in a fiercely competitive funding environment. This book is a step-by-step guide to aid program staff to build the best program possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teaching health professionals
Professor Michael Smith argues that health and social work professionals have an ethical responsibility to be accountable for their programs. I heartily agree. Fortunately Professor Smith provides us with an excellent resource for learning the tools and skills of program evaluation. All too often health professionals are taught that quantitative outcome studies are the only way to evaluate the care and services they deliver.Program Evaluation for Social Work and Health Professionals not only explains and describes, but models a range of qualitative methodologies as well.Students and professionals alike will benefit from the extensive case examples; each carefully selected to illustrate different aspects of evaluation study. As a political scientist working in the health field, I applaud Professor Smith for beginning and ending his book with a discussion of "the politics of evaluation," a reality of critical importance to all professionals wishing to have an impact on health, care, and quality of life.

Product Description
This revolutionary, user-friendly textbook not only guides social workers in developing competence in the DSM system of diagnosis, it also assists them in staying attuned during client assessment to social work values and principles: a focus on client strengths, concern for the worth and dignity of individuals, appreciation of environmental influences on behavior, and commitment to evidence-informed practice.

The authors, seasoned practitioner-scholars, provide an in-depth exploration of fourteen major mental disorders that social workers commonly see in practice, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. They skillfully integrate several perspectives in order to help practitioners meet the challenges they will face in client assessment. A risk and resilience framework helps social workers understand environmental influences on the emergence of mental disorders and the strengths that clients already possess. Social workers will also learn to apply critical thinking to the DSM when it is inconsistent with social work values and principles. Finally, the authors catalog the latest evidence-based assessment instruments and treatments for each disorder so that social workers can intervene efficiently and effectively, using the best resources available.

Students and practitioners alike will appreciate the wealth of case examples, evidence-based assessment instruments, treatment plans, and new social diversity sections that make this an essential guide to the assessment and diagnostic processes in social work practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I got the product (book) in a timely manner and I am very satisfied. Great to do business with this company.

2-0 out of 5 stars Get the dictionary out...
This book was required for a 200 level class, which is for sophomores. This has to be, by far, the most abstract book I have ever read. There is almost no relevancy to application in this book. I gave it two stars because chapter two gives a nice history of the profession. However, this book constantly repeats itself and uses an unnecessary complex vocabulary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book never received.
My daughter told me after the fourth of July that she never received the book titled Social Work. Now I'm upset to learn that we spent money on a book that was never received. On top of that her class will be over I believe at the end of this month. In the future I will not purchase anything from this person or company since the outcome was negative. As of 7/14/09 no book has been received. Where is the book?

1-0 out of 5 stars Never received book
I never received the book. Tracking information said it was sent, so it may not be the seller's fault, but I did not get it. Since it was cheap, I didn't go through the hassle of arguing for a refund.

1-0 out of 5 stars Redundant
I have experience writing in APA style formatting, and already have the APA Style manual yet all the professors in my Social Work program said this book was specific to social work and necessary. I don't know if they are getting kick-backs - but it's not specific and it's not necessary. I will add that if you don't have the full APA style manual and you are in Social Work, this is less cumbersome than the APA manual. So, it wasn't necessary for me - but it might be for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Service!
The Book came much sooner than I expected and was in excellent shape. I am very pleased with this purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
This book is a must have for all who are entering the field of social work. The book uses clear examples of how a future social work is to write.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good guide but not worth the $27 I paid.
This information written in the Preface would have been helpfeul before I purchased this book.(Social workers should not expect this book to replace the Publication Manual. They should be aware that this is one of several reference books that belong on their desk when they write. Somtimes the transition from first-year English composition classes to social work classess leaves students confused because these first-year classes tend to be taught with emphasis on the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. In these courses students learn how to organize a coherent paragraph, how to develop a thesis statement, and how to write an essay or a library research paper in generic (MLA-based)style.This is a useful start, but it does not enhance students' technical writing skills when it comes to using APA gudelines. They must now learn to write using APA Style, which includes not only rules made excilict in the Publication Manual but also other conventions that constitute the unwritten rules of the APS style. For example, rather than write about what other authors "said" or "believed", they should concentrate on what the author "found or "reported".Also, the title of an article should not be mentioned in a literature review, and passive voice may sometimes be used.) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely meant for school counseling
I generally work with special education students as a case manager/social worker. It's hard for me to utilize the handouts because I don't see my students on a regular basis and most of them are not designed for students with lower academic abilities. There's a lot of writing involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Counseling school-age kids
I am a counselor in private practice and needed some "hands on" exercises to give to my middle school clients who are struggling with school, behavior, self-esteem, and other issues.I've used it several times with my clients and they have responded very well to the homework assignments or in-therapy work.In one particular case where the client was "stuck", it brought faster clinical results.I strongly recommend this homework planner.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful school counselor resource!
As a school counselor, I use this book quite a bit. It's very handy for short sessions, when there's limited time.I use the activities to help me focus sessions - especially when there's limited time, then to assign counseling homework, and to guide follow-up sessions.I appreciate that the activities are tied to measureable "treatment goals" that link back to the DSM in the companion manual.I also use, both, this book and its companion to help me find a starting point in cases where I have limited knowledge or experience. ... Product Description
Class differences permeate the neighborhoods, classrooms, and workplaces where we lead our daily lives. But little is known about how class really works, and its importance is often downplayed or denied. In this important new volume, leading sociologists systematically examine how social class operates in the United States today. Social Class argues against the view that we are becoming a classless society. The authors show instead the decisive ways social class matters--from how long people live, to how they raise their children, to how they vote.

The distinguished contributors to Social Class examine how class works in a variety of domains including politics, health, education, gender, and the family. Michael Hout shows that class membership remains an integral part of identity in the U.S.--in two large national surveys, over 97 percent of Americans, when prompted, identify themselves with a particular class. Dalton Conley identifies an intangible but crucial source of class difference that he calls the "opportunity horizon"--children form aspirations based on what they have seen is possible. The best predictor of earning a college degree isn't race, income, or even parental occupation--it is, rather, the level of education that one's parents achieved. Annette Lareau and Elliot Weininger find that parental involvement in the college application process, which significantly contributes to student success, is overwhelmingly a middle-class phenomenon. David Grusky and Kim Weeden introduce a new model for measuring inequality that allows researchers to assess not just the extent of inequality, but also whether it is taking on a more polarized, class-based form. John Goldthorpe and Michelle Jackson examine the academic careers of students in three social classes and find that poorly performing students from high-status families do much better in many instances than talented students from less-advantaged families. Erik Olin Wright critically assesses the emphasis on individual life chances in many studies of class and calls for a more structural conception of class. In an epilogue, journalists Ray Suarez, Janny Scott, and Roger Hodge reflect on the media's failure to report hardening class lines in the U.S., even when images on the nightly news--such as those involving health, crime, or immigration--are profoundly shaped by issues of class.

Until now, class scholarship has been highly specialized, with researchers working on only one part of a larger puzzle. Social Class gathers the most current research in one volume, and persuasively illustrates that class remains a powerful force in American society.

ANNETTE LAREAU is professor of sociology at University of Maryland, College Park. DALTON CONLEY is University Professor at New York University.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection of Papers Addressing Many issues Concerning Class
This work is a selection of papers by a distinguished group of educators and researchers on social class, its implications, meaning, impact, and importance in today's society. The US is very far from being a classless society, and it can be argued that class is becoming more important rather than less.Overwhelmingly, it is an integral part of an individual's identification, and classes are hardening rather than becoming more flexible in the US today.

I was amazed that this is the first review for a book that was published over a year ago -- hopefully that does not mean the book has been overlooked and not been including in reading lists in our universities. It is a scholarly book, and the papers are subject to the criticism that they feature relatively useless statistics and obfuscating graphs so loved by the academic community. However, the reader is urged to skip over the academic jargon and gobbledygook and extract the meat of the arguments -- it is there for discussion and analysis.

The Introduction by Annette Lareau is critical in putting the remainder of the papers into context -- do not pick a paper are read it without devouring the Introduction first. The book is split into three main parts, conceptions of social class, how social class works, and considering the implications of social class. My favorite paper was the shortest by Janny Scott on reflections on "Class Matters."Yep, I'm sure there's something important being said, I just don't know what it is.I probably learned the most from those by Goldthorpe and Jackson and Lareau and Weininger.Frankly I could argue against "Education Based Meritocracy -- The Barriers to Its Realization" by Goldthorpe and Jackson, but it was certainly thought-provoking.With universities increasingly confining themselves to a single political orientation prevading all disciplines and working to create an internationalist approach to economics and society, the stress on a education-based meritocracy is tending to produce ever more uniform attitudes and opinions in the ruling class where conformity is much more important than ideas, critical thinking, innovation, etc., etc.In short, "merit" means showing that one grasps the rules and attitudes conforming to the elite class rather than anything else.Lareau's and Weininger's presentations of the differences between middle-class and working-class (we can't say "lower class") attitudes that give rise to their children's educational expectancies was also highly interesting.

At any rate, there is much good here for the academician and the normal citizen.I recommend this book to all, and hope the papers will not be too formidable for the casual reader. The issues are simply too important in this age of Weber versus Marx with Marx being the preferred doctrine in the vast majority of American universities. ... Product Description
This comprehensive text explores the theory and methods in nine arenas of macro social work at the community, organizational, societal, and global levels of practice. Intended for undergraduate and graduate social work students who want to make a difference in today's modern society, this text challenges readers to use their concern, their values and their critical thinking skills to assist those who have been left out and kept out of making decisions that affect their lives, empowering them to reclaim a wholesome, healthy social environment for themselves and their children. The book's generalist orientation provides an organizational framework as well as generous amounts of history, biographical material on leading macro social workers, illustrative contemporary examples, and factual data that offers real life detail for students. Most important, however, is the depth and wealth of practical information that assists students in understanding how to help people engage in solving social problems and making social change to bring about a more just society and humane global civilization. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Keeper!
I enjoyed reading this textbook for my macro-social work class. After an overview (first chapter) and three introductory chapters (2,3, & 4), the rest of this textbook delves into macro social work practice on three levels - the community, the organizational and the national/international levels. At the beginning of each chapter the author lays out the historical foundation for each of each of these tiers in macro-social work practice. The author informs the reader of HOW to practice macro-social work in each of these societal systems.I will use this textbook for furture reference if ever I need to practice social work especially at the community level as a guide on how a social worker can effectuate change and problem solving. This text is a useful reference for social work administrators and social welfare policy thinkers.

2-0 out of 5 stars not that you have a choice
If you are buying this book, you probably have to because it is assigned reading. This was a very frustrating read. It was both preachy and repetitious. There was one model that he repeatedly used for every role of the macro social worker. After 3-4 times of this, I was asking myself, "didn't I read this before?" after 6-7 times I was ready to pull my hair out. By the time the course was over, even our instructor was telling us to skim the chapters, that we'd read this before.

I typically keep all of my textbooks, but I am definitely selling this book. It was a complete waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practice of Macro Social Work:A Challenge for the Future
The field of social work is overwhelmingly oriented to clinically based counseling and psychotherapy. In agreement with Harry Specht and Mark Courtney, Brueggemann sees this as a wrong direction that the field of social work has taken. In this textbook, he advocates that social work return to its original mission--that of macro social work practice.Brueggemann defines macro practice in the most comprehensive way of any modern social work textbooks, as the"practice of solving social problems and making social change at the community, organizational, societal and global levels. He follows up this definition by dividing his text into four sections, each of which begins with a theoretical description. The first section, solving social problems and making social change includes provocative chapters on social problems, social problem solving, and social leadership. The following three sections each deal with community, organizaitonal and societal/global social work respectively.Community social work covers community planning, community development, and community organization.Organizational social work includes program development, administration and organizaiton development.Social work at the societal and global levels comprise chapters on social policy, social action and social movements, and international social work. The book also contains a wealth of resources in three appendices aimed at encourgaging students to get personally invovled in helping people and explore the field in more depth by means of computer ancillaries. Not only does the textbook explore the entire field of macro social work practice, but it does so in a way that encourages students to critique assumptions about modern society and about social work itself. It rejoices in the rich history of the social work profession and helps students understand itsheritage. Finally, the author unswervingly asserts that social workers should "never do for others what they can do for themselves."This, Brueggemann asserts,is the iron law of macro social work. ... Praise for the first edition

"Finally, a social work practice text that makes a difference! This is the book that you have wished for but could never find. Although similar to texts that cover a range of practice theories and approaches to clinical practice, this book clearly has a social work frame of reference and a social work identity."
--Gayla Rogers, Dean of the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary

This second edition has been updated and revised to include:

  • A new chapter on Relational Theory, and newly-rewritten chapters by new authors on Cognitive-Behavioral Theory, Existential Theory, and Wraparound Services
  • New critique of the Empirically Supported Treatment (EST) movement
  • Updated information on the movement toward eclecticism in counseling and psychotherapy
  • A refined conceptualization of the editors' generalist-eclectic approach

This new edition discusses many of the same issues presented in the first, but also provides a framework for integrating the use of each theory with central social work principles and values, as well as with the artistic elements of practice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still waiting
I ordered this textbook on August 1, 2009. It is 3 September, 2009 and I am still waiting on its arrival. I am deployed to Iraq and start online classes the 8th of September. I hope to recieve the book before then.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a fun read.
This book is very detailed in studying the level of organizations in the work setting. Must chapters seem like they take forever to read and get a grasp on. When I was finished reading it I found the information to be very overwhelming and hard to remember. It might be a good book solely to use as a reference. I would not recommend it to anyone. ... When I received this product the CD-Rom on the front cover was broken. The book is soft cover and the CD was attached to the front in a soft plastic sleeve. My experience is that it does not transport well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a good introductory book in to the skills needed as a social worker. Although it is written for America this is very applicable to anyone studying social work. It is very clear, concise, explains its points well and doesn't get bogged down in terminology. Very easy to read and doesn't use highly formal discourse in its presentation so even people new to social work will be able to fully appreciate the ideas within the book. That said it is very practical and gives a lot of 'food for thought' for the more experienced social worker to reflect, review and relearn some of those skills we take for granted. Thank you for a well written book, it is making my studies a lot less painful for it!
