5-0 out of 5 stars Marcus creates a great collection of readings!
This book is great--I have to read certain selections for my Psych100 class and they are always interesting and exciting. It is great to have a compilation of literature from many famous psychologists. A must read for any psychology student or psych enthusiast!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book in a great trilogy !
After having read Gary Marcus' 'The Birth of the Mind' (dont miss it!) and having translated into italian his amazing 'Kluge: the Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind' (on print soon even in Italy) I can consider myself a real 'supporter' of this talented writer and insightful psychology professor. My opinion of him is so biased and I am so addicted to his work that I couldnt stop with those two and ordered'The Norton Psychology Reader', which collects some of my favourite authors: Pinker, Sacks, Chomsky, Goleman, Csikszentmihalyi, LeDoux - and lots of other talented scientist Im now happily getting to know. All of them contribute to make this book a chest overflowing with modern psychology jewels, a companion on the way to the understanding of the mind, a compendium tracing a lay scientific way to enlightenment! Wanna make the trilogy complete? After 'The Birth of the Mind' and 'Kluge', get this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's like the Cliff Notes of great Psychology writings!
This book provides a fabulous overview of some of psychology's greatest works - chapter-long excerpts from renowned psychologists like James, Freud, Pinker, Chomsky and so many more.A great way to get a feel for some of these original works (without getting bogged down with pages and pages of over-technical psycho-babble).Great for the undergraduate psychology student. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase!
Book was in perfect condition and still in wrapping as described. Would absolutely buy from this seller again and again. Thank you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This text is easy to read and comprehend! It not only delivers information, but also makes you think critically.I recommend this text for anyone looking to go into psychology or sociology or any related field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable textbook for cross-cultural psychology instructors
This text has become an invaluable tool for the courses I teach in cross-cultural psychology, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Although many books purport to emphasize the integration of critical thinking skills with cross-cultural psychology, this is the only one that does so successfully. My students consistently rate it favorably, and I give it my highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thinking critically about cultural diversity
How refreshing to find a book about cultural diversity that isn't rife with "politically-correct" mumbo jumbo.Instead, this text emphasizes using critical thinking tools to incisively see through the fog of current academic and social fads and fashions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in cross-cultural psychology
Cross-Cultural Psychology by Shiraev and Levy is the best textbook available for this field. The book explains concepts and theories very well. Additionally, it provides the reader with a very practical understanding of the field.

I can readily imagine this book being used in counseling, clinical, or general psychology classes. In addition, I would argue that this book, even outside of the classroom, would be an excellent resource to keep on one's bookshelf.

My strongest endorsement stands behind this well written book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Reading
I am a student in general psychology class. This book is easy to read and formatted well and presents the information in a way I can understand it. I have no trouble staying awake reading this one because it catches my interests and speaks to me. I like the way it is setup to where the authors are writing in a few comments and interesting facts about themselves. This is the only textbook, that I get excited about reading and have no trouble understanding the material. This book is awesome, and it is not biased.

2-0 out of 5 stars couldn't use it
The book was in great shape...pretty much new but it was an Instructor's Edition (teacher edition) and my daughter wasn't allowed to use it so I had to purchase another one for her to use. No where in the description was this indicated or I wouldn't have bought it or would have at least checked with the instructor first.

5-0 out of 5 stars best review book ever
the textbook was hard to understand and taking notes was even more difficult and this review book made the book more understandable and easy for a upcoming exam or quick study.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the book I was looking for
The book I received is a teacher's evaluation book NOT a students book. It is essentially the same book, however, this important piece of information was lacking in the description when I made the purchase. I feel that I have to cover the book for my class as it's not entirely the correct book!!! I am a student and I would not have purchased from this seller if I had known this information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Young Mindset
First, I'd like to point out that I am eighteen years old and just finished my first year of college, so I'm coming from a relatively young point of view with an opinion on technique - not content, as I am no professional. Also, I read quite a bit, both leisurely and academically. However, the ability to read well or with ease does not guarantee complete engrossment or heed about the text and/or subject. That is, I'm like a lot of people my age when it comes to most textbooks - I find them utterly boring, where reading becomes more of a chore than a pleasure. And that's fair; textbooks aren't exactly meant for amusement. Still, not everyone is a scholar, and seeing how reading is an absolute, there should be some middle ground between dull professionalism and light entertainment.

Anyway. I was assigned this book for my Introduction to Psychology class, and though I had an amazing professor, this book itself was just as engaging and just as clever. Authors Dennis Coon and John O. Mitterer do an excellent job presenting the material both clearly and interestingly. You can tell they love psychology and put a lot of effort into relating to the common person. They show much consideration for their audience, catering to those who don't want another lackluster assignment, but something more stimulating. At least, that's what I believe. It definitely made the studying/homework portion of my college experience much more bearable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to those interested in psychology or looking to take a class in it, especially if they find it difficult keeping interest in a book and/or schoolwork. ... Presenting a principle or problem in experimental design, the authors then show how the problem has been dealt with in psychological literature.  Organized into two parts (Basic Principles of Experimental Design and Analysis of Experiments), this book combines a text and case approach to examine the methods of experimental psychology. Using published research findings, students read, critique, and analyze actual cases/experiments from all aspects of psychology that exemplify various design principles.

4-0 out of 5 stars awesome
this textbook is very convenient due to its small size and detailed information, it gives many actual case descriptions and examples. it is very research based and the information is very detailed and easy to understand, it does not have many tables and graphs for visual stumulation, i wish it did because then it would be a 5 star vote from me, but apart from this informality it is an excellent and informative learning and teaching device, especially after taking into consideration the degree of the subject itself. those of you who are required by your prefessors to purchase this book, as was i, you will not be dissatisfied in any way, shape or form. good luck and all the best wishes from me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Example-Driven Approach
I have taught experimental psychology and research methods for twelve years and I have used this book several times for experimental psych. The presentation is to-the-point and reasonably thorough. The highlight is the section of 16 published empirical papers, some of which are annotated, some of which aren't, thus presenting students with the opportunity to do their own evaluations. I think that the ability to base lectures and concepts on actual research papers is paramount for student understanding. I recommend the book highly.

I believe that Chakra88 was misusing the book by looking for information on APA style. The source for that is the APA Publication manual (which I also require my students to purchase). True, some of the APA format information in the textbook is out of date, but that is not its purpose. Its purpose is to teach experimental thinking and it does an excellent job of that.

(As a note, I am also one of the reviewers mentioned in the foreward to the book but I do not make any money from its sales.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
This is a worthless book. The examples do not coincide at all with the APA manual.Writing examples are not detailed or helpful.I had to consult three different manuals just to put together the proper APA format for a research proposal! This book is only good for giving a rough, rudimentary explanation of experimental psychology. If you want details on how to actually conduct research, go somewhere else to find it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands-on and concise; brilliant
I've taught experimental psychology many times with many different books. This book, however, is my favorite because it focuses on work as done by practicing researchers. The content is well-thought out and is short enoughto not overwhelm the students. The two chapters of design critiques areexcellent assignments in critical thinking. Most of all, the reproduced andannotated research articles are a gift. APA style is hard for students tounderstand, so the expository style helps tremendously. I hope this booknever goes out of print. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book was a good choice for my psychology class. As far as textbooks go, it's easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect
Besides the fact that its kinda big and heavy for my weak little arms, its a good and helpful book, came quickly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Received as Advertised
This book was advertised as a new hardcover book. When I received the book, all the corners were crushed, and the bottom of the back cover has a 1 1/2 inch rip or cut right next to the binding and the front cover is ripped or cut for about 1 inch in the same place.Unfortunately, they take so long to ship that I would not have had a replacement in time for school. So, I am stuck with this one.It is pretty beat up but all the pages are there so it is useable.I got lucky there.

Also I really liked the little samples here and there they seem to have supported the chapters in a good way. 5-0 out of 5 stars great for the budding pre-teen psychologists
This is a perfect introductory book for an upper-elementary or middle-school student who is developing an interest in psychology.

It concentrates on self-discovery and self-awareness and consists mainly of various personality tests. Those are very well done. They are engaging and child-friendly, yet also manage to plug in concepts and relate the tests to real life, without overloading the reader with academic language or emotionally heavy material.Conceptually, it is accurate and, while simple, not at all dumbed down.

It also gives ideas for projects, essays and assignments to link the material with the rest of the curriculum. The books has a few illustrations (black-and-white cartoons).

To make it clear, you will NOT find information on theoretical and experimental psychology in this book, no name dropping and theory outlines, no experimental design or discussion of famous experiments, etc. This is not a textbook, and even as a supplementary reading will likely be too juvenile for a high-schooler.

The best way to read this book is to take a chapter or two at a time, go through it together with your kid, compare your test results and discuss anything related to the topic that comes to your mind:give more depth to the definitions, discuss problems that may arise in this or that, try and figure out how you would study that if you were an experimental psychologist, etc.

Enjoy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for groups
My middle school groups really enjoyed doing these quizzes and learning a little more about themselves. I loved the CD that came with it, so you could have clean copies of the sheet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Fun Book
This book would be a great way to teach beginning psychology to a younger audience.I think it would be particularly cool in a summer camp or after school club.It is very easy to read, to teach and has modern pictures that the kids like.

Do you want your students to just take psychology or to experience psychology?

Experience Psychology is a first.

Its groundbreaking adaptive questioning diagnostic and personalized study plan help students “know what they know” while guiding them to experience and learn what they don’t know through engaging interactivities, exercises, and readings.

After all, to truly understand psychology and all its wonders, one must experience it firsthand. And, luckily, there are so many natural opportunities to do so.

Psychology is all around us—in our relationships, our homes, our communities, our schools, and our work. But linking everyday experiences to the academic discipline of Psychology is not always so easy.Laura King’sExperience Psychology was built to do just that.

Experience Psychology introduces function before dysfunction, building student awareness and understanding by looking first at typical, everyday behavior before delving into the less common—and likely less personally experienced—rare and abnormal.

Experience Psychology places the science of psychology and the research that helps students see the academic underpinnings at the forefront of the course and at the same time offers an abundance of applications that helps students connect the science of psychology to the world around them.At the same time, “Intersections” ensure students experience psychology as the interconnected discipline it is.

Experience Psychology helps students to perform to their maximum potential in and out of the classroom, fully engaging them in the content and experiences that comprise the world’s most popular undergraduate major. ... Read more

Product Description

Why Myers?
David Myers has become the world’s best-selling introductory psychology author by serving the needs of instructors and students so well. Each Myers textbook offers an impeccable combination of up-to-date research, well-crafted pedagogy, and effective media and supplements. Most of all, each Myers text demonstrates why this author’s style works so well for students, with his signature compassionate, companionable voice, and superb judgment about how to communicate  the science of psychology and its human impact.

Why Modules?
This modules-based version of Myers’ best-selling, full-length text, Psychology (breaking down that book’s 16 chapters into 59 short modules) is yet another example of the author’s ability to understand what works in the classroom.

It comes from Myers’ experiences with students who strongly prefer textbooks divided into briefer segments instead of lengthier chapters, and with instructors who appreciate the flexibility offered by the modular format.

Modular organization presents material in smaller segments. Students can easily read any module in a single sitting.

Self-standing modules. Instructors can assign modules in their own preferred order.  The modules make no assumptions about what students have previously read.  Illustrations and key terms are repeated as needed.

This modular organization of short, stand-alone text units enhances teacher flexibility.  Instead of assigning the entire Sensation and Perception chapter, instructors can assign the module on vision, the module on hearing, and/or the module on the other senses in whatever order they choose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Intro Class
I've used Myers textbooks for 2 years now (Ed. 7 for AP Psych in High School, and this edition for Psych 1 in college). It's a great textbook for an intro Psych class, and makes a great study tool with questions that pertain to each section. Myers writes in a scientific and psychological perspective, but somehow manages to do it without making it too dry by throwing in real world examples and case studies. So overall, this is a great textbook for a starter class. I highly recommend it... (not that I can choose what textbook your professor selects!)

Also, make sure you get the hardbound version. The paperback version that I received in high school took a beating and the value went down so much that I had to pay for damages >_<.

Hope this helps! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best trading books I have ever read.
I have traded for about 9 years and of the trading books I have read, this one and "The Daily Trading Coach" are the best. A good part of trading successfully is about over coming your subconscious trader and trading with your concious mind.Since following the recommendations in this book and Bret Steenbarger's other book "The Daily Trading Coach" my profits have increased quite a bit.He tells you about the usual things all traders should know about managing loss and staying in a play until it hits your target, then he goes deeper. He asks you to look at how you may be acting out disfunctional behaviors in placing trades. He gives you ways to recognize and short circuit those tendencies. He also has a website with volumes of blogs concerning trading that provide a look into the real trading world. He says there usually is more than one trader in each of us and we need to learn to recoginze which one is making the trades.

I have studied psychology as a hobbie for 35 years and I know what Bret is talking about. If this idea backs you up, you probably need to read his books and if you understand that you are many times making decisions with your subconscious mind, then you also know you need to read these books. He is speaking from a day trading perspective but the information applies to any kind of trading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on trading psychology, but not that easy
This book is really good, if you are looking for information on the psychology of trading. I especially liked the author his trading experiences and the way he looks back on those experiences. The stories of his clients, and how they dealt with their problems was also insightfull. Another good point were the links to the academical psychology researches and their findings.

I do think a lot of people who have never red a book on psychology before this one, will have difficulties with some of the material. I've studied economics at grad school and we've seen some psychology courses. They certainly were helpful in understanding this book. I do think the author could have prevented this from happening, but perhaps he simply was not aware of this.

I'm also goind to read this author his other books.

Conclusion: Add this book to your trading library. It's one of the better ones out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for an active trader
I highly recommend this book for any trader seeking to profit in the market. Dr. Steenbarger is a master of distilling practical advice into "readable" terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that every trader (pro and/or amateur) must read.
I was introduced to Dr. Steenbarger's work with this book and I love what he does.
This book is the foundation how his work and his book is very well written, an eye opener and has lot of practical implications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Good Insight
This book is really good insight on not just trading, but also about human thinking and behavior.
For those who expect the author to do the work for you and pretty much tell you when to trade, don't get the book.
This author give you the tools to work on yourself as a trader and to understand other people. Excellent book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The right book for my PSY200 class.
First of all you can't beat the price I paid (less than $10). This book is $70 (used)in the campus bookstore and even on Ebay! I LOVE AMAZON the deals are AMAZING.

4-0 out of 5 stars shipping review
I ordered this book on a thursday, and by saturday it was shipped to my house, so it was pretty fast ;]

4-0 out of 5 stars Student review.
This textbook does a pretty good job of making the information clear. The writer does a fairly decent job of keeping a motivated student's attention. The only issue is that the tone the author takes is at time too smarmy. He also alludes way too frequently to his family for comfort... I feel like I know his kids, and that kind of creeps me out.

Either way, when paired with good lectures, the material is pretty easy to follow. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best description of the book for the price
In talking with peers, I paid too much for this book for the condition it was in. I would have said it was in low fair, maybe even poor condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Outside the Zone of Learnability!
If you want to learn about brain-based learning, there are easier books to read.Yes, I learned a lot by reading it, but each chapter took me 2 hours to read.My classmates agree. Many times, I'd have to read it aloud to understand it. I've been to college; later I returned for a certification in education; and now I'm getting my masters. This is the hardest book I've ever encountered!

3-0 out of 5 stars Includes some useful information
NOTE:I received a free review copy of this book directly from one of the authors.

I was a little hesitant to read this book, as I am not a big fan of the "For Dummies" line; although I think that these books often do contain useful information, I find the way the books are organized to be distracting and somewhat juvenile.Still, since I am a psychologist who works with college students, I thought that SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY FOR DUMMIES might be a useful addition to our self-help lending library, particularly for our student athletes.

Overall, I DID find this book to contain some helpful information.I thought that Part I, which covered Sports Psychology Fundamentals, was especially beneficial, as it did a nice job of addressing issues such as confidence, motivation, and goal-setting.In Part II, the authors begin to focus more on specific tools for success ("Your Mental Toolkit"), and here I particularly liked their review of self-talk.Unfortunately, this second section seemed relatively short compared to the following one, "Staying Competitive: Sports Psychology in Action," which I found to be rather repetitive.

For the last three sections of the book, it seemed that the authors were too broad in what they were trying to accomplish.First, they expand the Sports Psychology concepts to team building; there is some good information here, but I am not sure that it would be relevant to an individual reading the book for self-help.Part V is entitled "Sports Psychology for Coaches and Parents."Again, the actual content provided here is quite good, but it feels like it belongs it its own separate book.In the the final segment, "The Part of Tens," the authors offer various suggestions on the topics "Ten Ways You Can Use Sports Psychology at the Office," "Ten Ways to Be a Better Competitor," "Ten Ways to Manage Stress Better," and "Ten Ways to Parent an Athlete."To me, this section would have made more sense if it were narrower in scope (i.e., removing the office chapter), and perhaps if it included the remaining information more briefly in an Appendix.

In conclusion, this book is likely to provide athletes with some useful information on topics relevant to their sports participation, and they may learn some beneficial new coping techniques which will assist in enhancing their performance. However, I would rate this book as only average, and I would recommend it with the caution that some portions might not be relevant to all readers.[Furthermore, as one other reviewer mentioned, I would note that this field, as officially designated by the American Psychological Association, is "Sport" Psychology--not "Sports" Psychology; this is a rather odd and somewhat disconcerting error for the authors to have made.]

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for dummies
I received this book as a review copy. I was delighted because I am fascinated by athletes and their motivation. How do the pros look so calm before a game? Why do some basketball players get so emotional that they actually hurt their team by getting technical fouls called against them? What makes a football player go out there and get hit - and enjoy the experience?

This book held some of the answers. However, the title really ought to be "How to Stay Motivated As An Athlete." Much of the content seems directed to younger players, which makes sense: a college or pro athlete will have mastered the techniques and/or have access to a trained psychologist who focuses on his or her unique challenges.

I'd recommend this book to adults who are not athletes but who work for themselves or for corporations. The tips on imagery, getting out of a slump and developing "winning" habits are surprisingly useful outside the context of sports. The section on self-talk is not especially new but presents valuable information unusually well.

I'm not sure who would benefit from the sections on coaching; I would hope that any coach would have some training before accepting the job. The section on parenting may be helpful but I wonder if a parent would actually pick up this book.

The book's title suggests that the book would give some hint of the theories of sport psychology and/or psychological theories that form the foundation of sports psychology. I also would have liked to see more examples from real sports figures. Of course much of that info is confidential, but many stories are reported in the press. Some comments like, "I suspect X's coach would..."As it happens, the NY Times for October 10, 2010, included a sports section story about a football punter who had been advised to work with a psychologist, and there was a brief mention of what the psychologist did. Pat Summitt also talks about team psychologists in her books about coaching the Lady Vols.

Last but not least, I liked the discussion of becoming a sports psychologist. This section could have been expanded with examples of the many things a sports psychologist can do, ranging from working with athletes on personal problems to traveling with a team to helping a coach resolve team conflicts. Alas, the authors warn us, it's not a glamor job. You have to stay on the sidelines. That's probably true but I bet it's also a lot of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great applications in business/career settings!
Thank you, Drs Smith and Kays, for an extremely helpful, succinct, and accessible tool for the workplace. As a manager in a fast paced, exacting, and stressful environment, chapter 19 (Ten Ways You Can Use Sports Psychology at the Office) was very useful to me. Performing under pressure, coping with conflict, and enlisting a support team are daily challenges. Thank you for being honest about what it is really like in the corporate world and giving those of us who struggle to make it all happen some tools to succeed and take care of ourselves in the process. Also, my boss was a football player and sports fanatic, and reading this book helped me understand him better and make more sense of the "sports worldview" he applies to every situation. Thanks again, guys, and keep up the good work! I look forward to reading more of your books in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Invaluable Resource for Anyone!
Not being a collegiate or professional athlete, I was a little skeptical about purchasing this book. It was after a recent conversation with a friend about my current struggles with my weight loss, that this book was highly recommended to me. "Sports Psychology for Dummies" taught me a lot about goal setting, motivation and even how to handle, what would have been before, devastating set backs. All while keeping my perspective on my overall goal. I have been implementing the techniques that Dr. Smith and Dr. Kays have suggested in the book for over three weeks now and not only have I already seen a difference in my body, but also in my overall mental attitude! "Sport Psychology for Dummies" is not just a GREAT resource for athletes, parents of athletes or coaches, but also a valuable tool for people like me: The everyday person who is looking to improve themselves both physically and mentally. Thank you Dr. Smith and Dr. Kays!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for any performer.
This book is a great resource for athletes, coaches, and parents of athletes, but the information is also useful to performers from any discipline. The techniques presented are focused on optimizing the mental skills and mindset needed for consistent high-level performance, useful to those in the performing arts, music, etc. Anyone desiring to increase confidence and consistently perform at peak levels will find this book invaluable. ... In this briefer version of Durand and Barlow's widely taught text, the authors explain abnormal psychology through their standard-setting integrative approach?the most modern, scientifically valid method for studying the subject. Through this integrative approach, users learn that psychological disorders are rarely caused by a single influence, but rooted in the interaction among multiple factors: biological, psychological, cultural, social, familial, and even political. A conversational writing style, consistent pedagogy, video clips of real clients (located on the accompanying Abnormal Psychology Live 2.5 CD-ROM), and real case profiles?95 percent from the authors' own case files?provide a realistic context for the scientific findings of the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy
This book was a gift for my daughter, she is enjoying it and learning from it.The book is in the simple Idiots format and other than being a little slow to start it does get interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great starting point
This book is excellent as a detailed introduction to psychology, and a must read for any person considering this field of study in the future, or for any person who has an interest in learning more about psychology.

I found that the book balanced basic and technical details well. One point that stuck with me was acknowledging that people who suffer from the blues for a few days often consider themselves depressed, and this is why there is an over diagnosis of depression.

It concerns me that it is legal to advertise anti-depressant medication on television in some countries around the world, e.g. "Are you tired, feeling anxious, and have trouble sleeping...then you need anti-depressant medication!" Over medicating is a big issue in today's society, and this book provides valuable insights into CBT and various forms of counselling. These two forms of treatment need to be prescribed more, as addressing the issues and source of problems is key to healing, and medication can help too, but the two together (therapy and medication) are a real solution to mental health issues.

You'll be glad that you read this book! Nicholas R.W. Henning - Australian Author

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read
