Product Description
Dr. James W. Kalat's BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY is the best selling book in the market for good reasons?an extremely high level of scholarship, clear and occasionally humorous writing style, and precise examples. An extremely skilled teacher, Dr. Kalat has written a book that speaks to today's users as well as to professors. Throughout all ten editions, the goal has been to make biological psychology accessible to psychology users, not just to biology majors and pre-meds. The goal has also been to convey the excitement of the search for biological explanations of behavior. Kalat believes that biological psychology is "the most interesting topic in the world," and this text convinces many users. Accuracy, currency and a clear presentation style have always been the hallmarks of this text, and this Tenth Edition and its supplement package take these qualities to the next level. Sold separately, and available for the first time, a media-rich, highly interactive online eBook integrates the book; the content of the book's popular companion CD-ROM, Exploring Biological Psychology; Try It Yourself activities; Stop & Check quizzes; and new animations. An improved and expanded Instructor's Resource Manual supports your teaching. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, great book (for undergrads)
This textbook is surprisingly interesting. I find I learn much more here than in class. The illustrations have really good detail, yet are simple enough to comprehend with just basic biology and psychology knowledge. Pretty expensive though. I was thinking of getting the previous edition, but waited too close to the start of the semester, so I bought the new version on here. This is one class you may actually want to buy the book. I know I'll be keeping it (although that might not may say much since I keep all my psyc books).

simply amazing.....but that's what you would expect anyway from Atkinson & Hilgard.....am so glad I bought the 15th edition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good and a CLASSIC
I recently purchased the East Asian non-color paperback edition (not to be sold in the USA)of Atkinson and Hilgard on EBAY and used it to study for the GRE.Actually my "intro" book way back when, as a freshman was the 6th edition (this is the 14th). This time I read the whole textbook, and 2 days before the GRE I also studied Kaplan's guide, reading and not quite finishing the final chapters in the testing room.

I got my scores a couple of days ago.I scored a 760 or a 96%!Subsections were "experimental" 96%, and "social" 94%.I really didn't study anything else, and I hadn't completed a psychology major. ... Read more

Socrates, Plato, Descartes, Spinoza, Mesmer, William James, Pavlov, Freud, Piaget, Erikson, and Skinner. Each of these thinkers recognized that human beings could examine, comprehend, and eventually guide or influence their own thought processes, emotions, and resulting behavior. The lives and accomplishments of these pillars of psychology, expertly assembled by Morton Hunt, are set against the times in which the subjects lived.Hunt skillfully presents dramatic and lucid accounts of the techniques and validity of centuries of psychological research, and of the methods and effectiveness of major forms of psychotherapy.

Fully revised, and incorporating the dramatic developments of the last fifteen years, The Story of Psychology is a graceful and absorbing chronicle of one of the great human inquiries—the search for the true causes of our behavior. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intersting and informative!
This book was assigned to my History and Systems of Psychology class as our textbook. My professor promised to the class on the first day that this was a book for a class that we would: 1) actually want to ready and 2) wouldn't be able to put down. I did not take his comment seriously at right but he was right! This book is highly readable, grabs your attention from the start, and keeps you wanting to turn to the next page. It tackles psychology (and often cases science as a whole) as a process that started hundreds of years ago. Hunt introduces the reader to many famous thinkers, and many unknowns to the average person, who had an effect (whether positive or negative) on the development of psychology as we know it today. If you are at all curious as to why psychology exists today and who developed its ideas, then this book is a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you want to know where psych started
Amazing!Loved the book and you will too if you love philosophy and psyc.It talks about everything from, socrates, aristotle, plato, the physicist, pythagoras!I loved it!Had to get the book because of a class I was taking in College and I can say this is one of my fav quote on quote text books :-D

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epic Tale of Behavioral Science
I guess some of the other reviewers didn't like Hunt's proclivity to characterize important psychologists but for me this is one of the aspects of this book that make it great. Yes, I think this book is great. Any book that can span over two thousand years of thinking and keep it interesting is great just on that basis in my opinion. Within these several hundreds of pages is a comprehensive overview of psychological research and theory, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in the subject. Once read, a reader will see whole vistas of new subject matter to explore. Totally recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I thought this book gave a clear summary of the history of psych and thus a broad perspective on the nature of psychology as philosophy/science. It was easily readable, concise, and thorough.

4-0 out of 5 stars A new psychology "handbook"
(This paperback was revised and updated in 2007)

I had the pleasure of taking a progressive Introduction to Psychology course from one of the nation's top psychology instructors and researchers, Dr. David Hothersall. Morton Hunt's The Story of Psychology could have made a good addition to the course readings. This text examines the psychological pioneers' lives and work in enlivening details that form them into real people. This is true even back thousands of years into Ancient Egypt and language experiments. Hunt points out the usefulness of psychology today in greater numbers of aspects than the understanding of human nature and motivation, which many people may feel to be the principal intent of psychology.

Hunt demonstrates this usefulness in properly administered and interpreted workplace testing. Proper testing lead to one's Dream Job, as it were - the best position to fulfill one's skills and the company's needs as well as one's desires. Psychology can also be used to aide the exploration of the universe, such as in helping to achieve long periods of far-off living on the International Space Station and aboard the future 4-month long voyages to and from Mars, not to mention to Luna, our oxygen-restricted Moon.

As Hunt warns about ill-used testing, Dr. Hothersall taught how white Anglo-Saxon language-based IQ tests placed minorities at a disadvantage. Out of a 350-member class taking an urban language-based test, I scored third highest - at 35 (well over a hundred points lower than previous testing). This proves Hunt's cautions as legitimate to me.

Overall, the Hunt revised volume is decidedly Western in worldview and contains the unvarnished opions of the author about advertising, George W. Bush, and what is germane to the development of psychology into the future. In addition, the author offers to uphold notions that minorities score lower that whites and females lower than males in IQ testing, because of undeniable and unchangeable genetics. However, this is strong challenge to find out for oneself.

Armchair Interviews says: The Story of Psychology would be a good read for psychology students and practitioners and anyone interested in the ways of psychology through the centuries, past and future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just so you know
I didn't write this book.I was a paid technical reviewer, and read an early version of it.I offered some feedback, but certainly didn't write any of it.I assume that Lesley Bolton wrote all of it. I didn't know they were going to put my name and Ph.D. on the cover of the first version, let alone as first author, and I was seriously not pleased when I got my copy. I suggest that anyone who works with the Everything company read their contract carefully.

Lesley has a lot to be proud of, and I am honored to be associated with her work. But it's her work.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly basic overall study
While this book is very well written, the subject matter is fairly basic broad review of psychology. This book is more intended for the most novice scholar in this subject matter. For someone who knows a lot about this field, this book is a fairly basic review of a lot of the most basic of theories, such as Freud and Jung. I recommend this book to beginners for certain, but I don't think it's really meant for people who know a lot about the subject because it really doesn't go in detail enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars psychology textbook
This textbook was ordered on August 11th and received on August 14th!Great service and the book was in better condition that I expected.
There were only a few pages marked with highlighter, otherwise it looked brand new.My daughter needed it for a high school dual enrollment program and to get this book at the local college bookstores would have cost four times as much as I paid through this seller.Even to rent this book would have been more expensive. We are very pleased with this seller as far as timely delivery and condition of the book. Will use this seller again.

I used this book for a Intro to Psychology class at Tarrant County College South East Campus and the book came in good condition and is packed full of information for you to get a basic understanding of psychology. It is easy to read and understand and has a decent amount of pictures and figures for you to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent Introductory Book for Psych
Although this was a required book for an Introductory Psych class for university, it is nicely organized and includes comprehensive review & reflect tables and summary & review sections for each chapter. These help to consolidate major concepts and also provide a great study tool. It also contains periodic "Remember It!" quick reviews after each major text section to help reinforce comprehension. Another helpful feature is that all key terms are bolded as well as highlighted. It would have been great if the book included access to MyPsychLab, so that I could use those resources also to reinforce my learning, but unfortunately it involves a separate purchase so I will go without that. Amazon's price for a brand new book was cheaper than my college bookstore's used copy price.

Product Description

The global financial crisis has made it painfully clear that powerful psychological forces are imperiling the wealth of nations today. From blind faith in ever-rising housing prices to plummeting confidence in capital markets, "animal spirits" are driving financial events worldwide. In this book, acclaimed economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller challenge the economic wisdom that got us into this mess, and put forward a bold new vision that will transform economics and restore prosperity.

Akerlof and Shiller reassert the necessity of an active government role in economic policymaking by recovering the idea of animal spirits, a term John Maynard Keynes used to describe the gloom and despondence that led to the Great Depression and the changing psychology that accompanied recovery. Like Keynes, Akerlof and Shiller know that managing these animal spirits requires the steady hand of government--simply allowing markets to work won't do it. In rebuilding the case for a more robust, behaviorally informed Keynesianism, they detail the most pervasive effects of animal spirits in contemporary economic life--such as confidence, fear, bad faith, corruption, a concern for fairness, and the stories we tell ourselves about our economic fortunes--and show how Reaganomics, Thatcherism, and the rational expectations revolution failed to account for them.

Animal Spirits offers a road map for reversing the financial misfortunes besetting us today. Read it and learn how leaders can channel animal spirits--the powerful forces of human psychology that are afoot in the world economy today. In a new preface, they describe why our economic troubles may linger for some time--unless we are prepared to take further, decisive action.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I was pleased to get this great book signed off by one of the authors - Robert J. Shiller in a rendezvous at Museum of American Finance's panel discussion last year. I was grateful to this originator of the phrase 'Irrational Exuberance' (much before Alan Greenspan's book came out) for his time spent with me.

The book's fundamental hypothesis attacks the basic premise of the most fundamental and widely used in the field of Economics : people are well informed, unemotional, and rational. A recent movie 'Inside Job' supported the view point without reference to Akerlof and Shiller's work. It indicated how the education system (especially, the elite ones) are responsible for such mass destruction of USA's prosperity due to this basic premise and rest of the absurd conclusions due to such a premise. Yes, the premise makes the problem solvable because in it's absence, it's a random path. The premise allows putting some structure to the problem of Economic modeling. However, extending it the degree of generating third and fourth order derivatives models from such a restricted version of the solution is itself irrational; and this irrationality was exhibited by none other than the so-called 'brains' at Wall St.

Keynes had described Animal Spirits very well. The government did accept his suggestions partially as that's what got USA out of the Great Depression. However, the idea of 'Animal Spirits' was not palatable at the time when he introduced it. Consequently, the idea was buried and the rest was carried over for generations.

One of the potential solutions alluded is that the markets must be tempered by the government. Alas, the government may not have the right set of people for achieving this, who can achieve this without conflicts of interest. The movie Inside Job also highlights on how conflict of interest was present at Treasury and regulators offices as these officials retire into consulting the large firms (in lieu of their earlier favors) or head the large firms and come into the office (with potential baggage).Even if the government ends up getting such people (read Brooksley Born), she will be shot down by insane politics in a government. So, is the government truly capable of tempering the market ?

Yes, it's possible.

First, the market fundamentalists' lobby in Washington (reigning since last three decades from Thatcher-Reagan days) must be dismantled as they will bring this upon us again and again and again. In the last 10 years, it's been thrice already: LTCM fiasco in 1998, dot com bubble in 2001, and subprime in 2008. Later, the reforms must be introduced and given time to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Set Limits for Animal Spirits
The authors build on John Maynard Keynes theory of "animal spirits" - those underlying emotional, power seeking, self-serving motivations that ultimately drive economic matters - to suggest that in our era of irrational exuberance we need a steady hand (not an invisible hand) to guide the markets, the international community - all of humanity, to realize economic prosperity.

Akerlof and Shiller point out that in the years since Keynes published, "The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money" economists, determined to cast the dismal science into a legitimate pure discipline built the foundation of economic theory on two unsound assumptions (treated as fact):1. People are motivated by economic interests; and 2. People act rationally.

"Animal Spirits" lays out in two parts, first the psychological mistakes and motives that fuel economic action; and then practical applications (by way of questions and answers) of the psychology that in times of economic upheaval are shown to lead the economy astray.

The ultimate solution, Akerlof and Shiller recommend is to find a middle way.

The market, if given a free hand, revels in the passions - depression follows mania like night follows day.Realizing not always rational, but wholly human forces influence the economy: confidence in markets, a sense of fairness in exchange, corrupt unscrupulous motives, money illusion and story contribute to market advances and declines, society must make the role of government to set limits.

Capitalism, to survive, must operate within certain rules.Recognizing animal spirits ultimately move markets, a proactive, wise government will take the opportunity to step in and set conditions whereby animal spirits can be harnessed to serve the greater good.Keynes would be proud.

"Animal Spirits" is a quick read, with an insightful premise, and sound recommendations.

1-0 out of 5 stars very poor Kindle format
The Kindle version of this book is terrible.I have no comment on the content (just on Location 5569-580....by the way Amazon, when will you add real page numbers?), but the formatting of the Kindle version is sub-standard.The font has many holes in it, it's like ready a poorly mimeographed copy of the book. And worse than that, the footnotes are not hyperlinked, at all.The chapters are one-way hyperlinked (you can go to them but you can't get back to the Table of Contents....), but that's not really helpful.I've only read four or five books with Kindle so far, and they were all great. But this one is terrible.Buy a hard-copy or wait until Amazon provides a better Kindle version.
Amazon, is there any way you can produce and push out a better version or refund my money for this substandard version?

4-0 out of 5 stars Most things about this book have already been said
I enjoyed this book. It's very well written, and the material is interesting. The thesis of the book is that economies rely extensively on irrational aspects of humanity and that humans have non-economic motives, as opposed to what you'd learn in Econ. 101. The problem is that this isn't really new information, and most of what they're talking about is more or less common sense.

Even in Econ. 101, most teachers emphasize the assumptions that everybody is rational and is making decisions for purely economic reasons, so as not to over state their case, and I'm sure everyone has heard numerous examples of non-economic and/or irrational motives in economic decision making on the news. Yet this book acts like its topic is new research. Unless you know almost nothing about economics, you probably won't find anything particularly surprising.

Some stuff, like the money-illusion, is slightly different than the standard treatment, however. The long-term tradeoff between inflation and unemployment was of particular interest to me, though I already knew most of what was presented.

This isn't to say that I don't recommend this book. As I said before, it's well written and the topics are interesting. But go elsewhere, if you're looking to learn something new.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reality-challenged authors
This book is so full of factual errors, the authors either intended it to be a farce or they are mentally retarded. It goes way beyond being merely disinformed or biased. Then there are the nonsequitors and other logical fallacies. Reading this is like nails on a chalkboard, the whole time. If they excised the absurdities, about 10% of the book would be left.

Don't waste your money. ... Read more

Product Description
The shortest, most succinct of the books written by Dennis Coon, PSYCHOLOGY: A JOURNEY presents psychology in a way that sparks readers' curiosity, insights, imagination, and interest-getting students "hooked" on psychology and eager to read on. The first author to integrate the proven SQ4R (survey, question, read, recite, relate, and review) active learning system into a psychology textbook, Coon helps readers grasp major concepts, develop a broad understanding of psychology's diversity, and see for themselves how psychology relates to the challenges of everyday life. Because readers become actively involved with the material, they develop a basic understanding of psychology that they take with them into their future courses and careers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My book took a journey
I was pretty unsatisfied with how long it took for my book to arrive. I ordered this book and another one on the same day. I had received my other book two days after ordering. It took two and a half weeks for my book to arrive and I really needed it for class which really upset me. When I received the book it was in pretty good condition. The description failed to mention that there was cover damage that was fixed with tape but overall the book was still in good condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook
This is a great textbook. I have passed every test and it is because of the way this textbook breaks down what it is advocating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This book is EXTREMELY helpful. I used the quizzes at the end of each chapter and I felt that it was a great way to review what I read. It also had a list of important words from each chapter (with pages numbers so they were even easier to find) and I made flash cards out of those, there was also a summary of the chapter and I believe it helped me prepare for my midterms. The book is an easy read, not complicated or dense -- full of interesting information. Unfortunately I had to return this book because I found another one for a cheaper price. I paid about $135 for this one and I bought another for $36 (both prices include shipping and handling). I did not realize the other was a different edition until I received it and wished I did not return this book. But it was too late, I got my money back and such, in other words--this book is worth it and amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent condition and shipping
I needed this textbook for my PSY 103 class, and I am glad I purchased it through Amazon because I saved about 30 bucks, even though it was a brand-new edition (2010) and there were no used copies. It shipped fast, and it was in beautiful condition.I will definitely order books through Amazon next semester!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
I purchased this book for my daughter for her AP Psychology class. It was substantially less than new and was in like new condition!I can't comment on the content as I haven't read it, but externally it was perfect! It was a required text so I'm assuming the book itself is also a good one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait, let me read that again...
This book is sloppily written which makes it difficult to read.Often sentences are circumlocutious and contain awkward phrases. Also the book is full of little mistakes like "Boys are more likely than boys to engage in rough-and-tumble play" (338).Whatever. ... Read more

Product Description

Brian Tracy, one of the top professional speakers and sales trainers in the world today, found that his most important breakthrough in selling was the discovery that it is the "Psychology of Selling" that is more important than the techniques and methods of selling.
Tracy's classic audio program, The Psychology of Selling, is the best-selling sales training program in history and is now available in expanded and updated book format for the first time. Salespeople will learn:

  • "the inner game of selling"
  • how to eliminate the fear of rejection
  • how to build unshakeable self-confidence

Salespeople, says Tracy, must learn to control their thoughts, feelings, and actions to make themselves more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I am about half way done with it, but so far this book has taught me a few insights that have directly scored me sales where I would not have.I have worked in sales for the last 7 years, and even the most experienced sales people I know can benefit from this book.It is amazing, I know and understand many of the concepts that Tracy talks about in the book, however he gives some extremely valuable insights that shed some vibrant rays of light on the concepts that most sales people are familiar with to help the reader very easily increase their sales volume.I couldn't be happier with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Advice, Though Not Particularly Fresh
Unlike many of the marketing books that deal with specific techniques, The Psychology of Selling is interesting in that it highlights the seller's self-perception and state of mind. The author places an emphasis on improving self-esteem, and encourages salespeople to set personal goals in life to improve their problem solving in general.

When the author tackles the subject of why people buy a particular product, most of his points are marketing 101, but he effectively breaks down two major motivations that many sales books don't.He delves further into the psychology of buying with a point-by-point list of basic customer needs, and how you can appeal to them. The book carefully explains how all purchases are ultimately made for an emotional reason, and that consumers simply find ways to justify their purchase with logic only after the sale. One technique I found particularly useful was how to ask a question that would help you determine a customer's "Hot Button" and use it to encourage a purchase.

While some of the techniques dealing with face-to-face meetings aren't addressed in other sales books, there are many tips that seem to be Sales 101.Granted somes salespeople may not maintain eye contact with clients, give firm handshakes, or focus on personal grooming, but some of his advice seems to be fairly common knowledge. That in particular is the only reason why I gave the book four stars instead of five, but the book in otherwise should on the shelf of anyone involved in advertising as well as sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Million Dollar Read
This is one of the best sales books I have put my hands and eyes on.It without a doubt has given me a lot to work on in my daily sales process.Of the many sales books I've read to date, this is in the top three.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is the best book I have ever read. Every seller should read it, it will help you do better business. I already started with my results

5-0 out of 5 stars I'll give it 5 stars - Great Book!

I have to admit, being familiar with Brian and his work, in particular, Brian book ADVANCED SELLING STRATEGIES that when I first saw this book I was a little dissappointed. I thought it was too small. The fact is that this book is along with Brians followup, "The Art of Closing The Sales" the same information as Brian Tracy's multi million dollar best selling audio program "The Psychology of Selling" and Brian's seminar of the same name which many have paid up to $5,000 to attend. It is very powerful information.

I also have to admit that when it comes to sales training, my personal favorite is Tom Hopkins with Brian Tracy right behind. Why listen to both? Because I have always believed that you should get training from various qualified sources. Another one of my favorite trainers is James E. Rohn. Mr. Rohn advises to get advice from as many people as possible. When it comes to selling, I am looking for maximum effectiveness. Tracy and Hopkins have walked the walk, have both set sales records along with being great trainers.

Tracy is more into the consultative approach although he uses some of the tried and proven closing techniques that sales professionals use. What impressed me about Tracy is that he speaks from experience having been selling since he was ten years old. He has taught more than 500,000 students in over 500 companies. Like Tom Hopkins, he has walked the walk, talks the talk and is one great trainer as well.

Using the combined advice of Tom Hopkins and Brian Tracy I was able to reach my monthly goal at my last job in only three days. The first time I used these techniques I moved from next to last place out of 71 sales reps to 3rd out of 75 reps in only one month generating up to $100,000 in sales volume in one month. This stuff works.

Right now I am using Brian's strategies in my network marketing company. They work very well.

That said, being familiar with Tracy in particular his tape series The Psychology of Selling, I was initially expecting much more in this book than what is offered. However, as stated above, that opinion has changed. Advanced Selling strategies which Tracy wrote over 14 years ago was a huge book, packed with information and had more than enough meat. I recommend th at you read this book first or along with Advanced Selling Strategies, followed by The Art of Closing The Sales.

Nonethless, The Psychology of Selling is a good book, a great primer for new sales people and a great refresher for experienced sales people as well. If you buy this, you will want to add the tape program as well or Advanced Selling Strategies. I also recommend Brians video programs "How To Sell Well" and 24 ways to close the same.

Finally, to do well in sales, you must not only have the right techniques but you must alsobelieve wholeheartily in your product or service, and the company you represent and perhaps most importantly, sincerely want to impact the lives of other people. You must feel that your product/service/company is the best in the world otherwise none of these strategies will work for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I compared this textbook to what the rest of the class had, which is the edition stated on the sylabus. Even though this book is an older edition of what I was supposed to have for class, I found it to be very accurate. The only real difference was older diagrams, which still basically showed the same thing, and obviously the pages were off. The important thing was that the material was exactly the same.

Product Description
Successfully completing the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) exam is the typical requirement for licensed practice and employment as a psychologist in public education. Until now, most graduate students and other professionals relied only on informal study guides or information provided by the test publisher (Praxis). Although students need to utilize informal study guides, this insider's book is essential for effective preparation. Most important, the School Psychology Licensure Exam Guide is one of the very few publications to provide a complete practice test! In addition to a mock quiz with highly similar test items, this guide provides a thorough review of key concepts, theories and advice. If you plan on becoming a school psychologist and taking the NASP exam, then the School Psychology Licensure Exam Guide is a necessity. ... Read more

This book was created in 2004 and the Praxis II School Psychology Exam was updated in 2008.I would not use this to study because it is out of date.Study from the Best Practices series and buy the downloadable ETS Guide. If you do some practice questions and review the matieral you are least familiar with, you will do fine.Study the ethics guidelines from NASP, their position statements, and the most important special education laws. You don't need this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for simple, low stress prep
I'm an Ed.S level school psychologist who has been practicing in public schools for three years now.I purchased this book when I took the Praxis for School Psychology in 2006.I'm not sure how the test may have changed since then, but this book was a quick and simple way to prepare for the Praxis.I've never been a big fan of big study prep books, especially for content areas. If you've taken two years of graduate courses to prepare for a career in school psychology and aren't ready for the Praxis, no book is going to change that for you now. What this book does well is outline the major areas covered on the Praxis, such as ethics and evaluation, so you can identify what areas might be particular areas of personal weakness which will allow you to target what areas you should be brushing up on.The sample test in the back was probably my favorite part of the book, as it allowed me to get an idea of what to expect as far as the style of questions on the Praxis, which is very helpful since there weren't very many study guides for the School Psychology Praxis exam when I took it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Guide
This book was very helpful in preparing for the Praxis II: School Psychology Test. It not only gave general studying guidelines, but also went through bullet points of all of the most important information to study for each section of the test. The only drawback is that it is a little dated since a new version of this test just came out last year. However, the test sections are similar enough that it still provides a very comprehensive overview of what you need to know. It also includes a practice test at the end!

5-0 out of 5 stars From one of Dr. Entwistle's students
I am currently reading this book for my class Integration of Psychology and Christianity taught by none other than Dr. Entwitsle at Malone University. I find the book to be incredibly interesting and I have learned a lot already about the history of the relationship between the Church and psychology. It is definitely a challenging book, however, I do have the benefit of discussing every chapter with the author. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the Integration of Psychology and Christianity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true thought provoker!
Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity is a great way to challenge what you really believe as it relates to the relation of psychology and theology in the clinical world and religious world. You will be challenged to develop your belief system, as Entwistle presents an unbiased presentation of what others have to say on the matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid presentation
As an older grad student returning to advanced study after 25 years, I found this book a solid presentation of the history of integration of psychology and theology. With a BA in Bible and years of experience in the ministry, the type of integration that Entwistle proposes needs to be heavily considered for any Christian counselor who seeks success with his clients. Taking notes on chapter highlights was helpful for exam preparation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entwistle Review - Angela Sullivan
For the most part, psychology and theology have been considered to be enemies as both deal with the basic questions about life and the human experience from different approaches.Psychology places human experience (empirically) at the core of understanding and theology places God (our interpretation of His Word) at the center of understanding human experiences.Theology is faith based and includes a strong acceptance of the Bible as the basis of all truth.Psychology is empirically based and leaves little room for faith or acceptance of the supernatural. It is easy to see how the two disciplines can be viewed as enemies. However, Entwistle provides an in depth look at both and paves a way to model the two in such a way that they complement and complete one another.
According to Entrwistle, "Everyone has a worldview - a window through which he or she views the world, assumptions, and beliefs that color what he or she sees." (Entwistle, 2004, p. 67)The book begins by discussing in depth how our worldview affects our way of thinking about everything, including psychology and theology. As the author points out, our worldviews are not so much chosen as much as they are learned from our experiences, education, and culture. Most are not even aware that their views on everything are filtered through these windows, which both distort and clarify our interpretation of what we see.
In addition to the ways that particular worldviews shape our attitude about psychology and theology, we also approach the subject according to the models we have constructed regarding the two disciplines.Entwistle described 5 distinct paradigms of relational approaches to understanding the various models.Enemies, which include both secular combatants and Christian combatants, do not see any reconciliation between psychology and theology.Spies, both domestic and foreign, will hold allegiance to one discipline but selectively taking components from the other.Colonialists are described as those who claim territory they did not win, discover, or work for.Neutral parties tend to mind their own business and keep the two camps separate.Lastly, there are those who are like allies.Allies view both psychology and Christianity as belonging to God and seek to understand how the two are based on the same truth.
Based on Francis Bacon's description of two sources for learning, God's book of Words (the Bible) and God's book of deeds (written in creation through nature), Entwistle concludes the book with a discussion on finding balance in our responsibility to properly utilize the two books. He reminds us that when science disagrees with the Bible, the conflict always resides in our interpretation.Coming full circle, Entwistle returns to the issue of how our worldview, biases, presumptions, and experiences alter and skew the way we interpret data.He ended the book with a sentence worth remembering in our search for truth:"We will sometimes have to live with ambiguity and uncertainty, be we affirm that God is the author of all truth..."(p. 275).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book but lacking
David Entwistle lays the foundation for his book in the questions, "What is the proper relationship of faith and science? More specifically, what, if any, relationship should be posited between Christianity and psychology" (2004, p. 10)? In order to understand and have a complete appreciation for the depth of the arguments regarding the relationship between Christianity and psychology, Entwistle begins by examining the history of each as well as the worldviews that have resulted from this history. This leads us to explore the movement called integration and the search for a comprehensive definition. Using anecdotes from his years of building models, Entwistle demonstrates how two disciplines, that many feel must be completely separate, can be effectively integrated.

When we look at the relationship of psychology and theology, we are concerned with models based on models; that is we express our understanding of theology in various models, our understanding of psychology in different models, and we then conceptualize their relationship in yet more models (p. 160).

Entwistle makes a key point in laying the foundation of the integrative approach when he contrasts two divergent Christian beliefs. On one hand, some Christians maintain the created universe was the result of eons of cosmic evolution in order to fit with scientific theory. On the other hand, some Christians maintain a literal view of Biblical creation in that the world was created six days. Both views ". . . emphasize who did it while diverging on how it was done" (Entwistle, 2004, p. 121). According to Entwistle, one's view will determine how he or she will approach integration, or whether it is pursued at all (2004, pp. 121, 122).

A large portion of the book is taken up in the exploration of the various models used to understand the various views of integration. Entwistle compares and contrasts the various models and their authors, offering his own model which seems to creatively combine the best of the models put forth. Five paradigms are expounded upon to show the various camps in which Christians and psychologists "live." The first is the Enemies paradigm which is marked by antagonism and an inability to see value in the other's perspective. Two versions of the Enemies paradigm exist. First, the Secular Combatants in which religion is seen as the enemy of psychology and second, the Christian Combatants in which psychology is seen as the enemy of religion (p. 186). The second paradigm is the Spies who see some value in the other's perspective, but attach no corresponding belief in the underlying, usually religious, value system (pp. 208-213). They steal thoughts and ideas and use them as they may. The third paradigm is the Colonialists who see value in psychological ideas and then selectively take what meets their needs without buying into the underlying value of psychology as a discipline (pp. 214-218). The fourth paradigm is the Neutral Parties who believe in exploring the ideas of both psychology and theology without trying to see how either relates to the other (pp. 218-225). Finally, the fifth paradigm is the Allies As Subjects of One Sovereign. This best illustrates how both psychology and theology makes the most sense and best captures the true spirit of integration. Taken together, psychology and theology can illuminate the human condition better than either could individually (pp. 230-234).

One concern I have with Entwistle's book, however, is the very obvious deletion of the work of the Holy Spirit in the integration process. While much was said about God's two books, nothing was said about the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit can provide guidance, wisdom, understanding, and discernment in the therapy process. Throughout Scripture, but especially in the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is seen to provide guidance and understanding to Christians in a variety of areas. Because of what Jesus Christ has done for us, we as believers received the Holy Spirit who dwells within us (Ephesians 2:18). It is the Holy Spirit who guides us. Romans 8: 5 says, "Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit" (New International Version) In Ephesians 5:18 Paul says that we are to let the Holy Spirit fill and control us, and that when we allow the Holy Spirit to control our minds there is life and peace (Romans 8:6b). The Holy Spirit gives us hope and power, as well as the understanding of Scripture by guiding us into all truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT the current book
When I looked this item up on amazon, it had a nice blue and yellow picture for the newer edition. This is NOT the current, acceptable edition (for Wright State at least). Now my homework is due and I'm reading the wrong text!

This was a great, full color, book. However it was very large, not just thick but literally surface area large.Because of that it is very flimsy as a paperback edition. Therefore, if it was a hardcover it would have been perfect.Other then that the chapters are well defined, and it offers definitions and important key words on the edge of the pages, which is nice for quick reference. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A very basic primer on practicing criminal psych
When I bought this book, I thought I would be getting a basic breakdown of different types of offender behavior and the more prevalent psychiatric issues that one would see in the criminal psych field, with occasional views of how a variety of socio-economic factors influence the different types of crinimal behavior in the US. That's not the main purpose of this book. This book is primarily written for a UK audience (with brief references in every segment on how the subject is studied or researched in the US). The main purpose is to look at the many different types of work that criminal psychologists do and the environments in which they work; this book does a very good job of examining that. For those looking to enter into the criminal psych field, this would be very helpful. There are some portions that do look at offender behavior, but they are mostly high-level macro views of offender behavior without any in-depth examinations of "what makes the offender tick" (more along the lines of "what types of punishment are out there? Why? Do they really work?"). If you're looking for a book that's more focused on the psychology of offender behavior, this is not the best book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars McMinn Review - Angela Sullivan
Through illustrations and counseling session vignettes, McMinn (1996) provides an excellent working model of how to integrate psychology, theology and spirituality in his book of the same title. He begins the book with exploring the challenges which confronts the Christian counselor who is trying to integrate the science of psychology with the teachings of faith, all the while keeping both the professional and personal life of the counselor at the center of the discussion.McMinn stresses that what happens in the personal life of the counselor is just as important as what goes on behind the doors of the counselor's office. To help the reader understand how the counselor's worldview affects counseling style, McMinn uses vignettes he labels, "What if this happened?"Through these illustrations he is able to explore such issues as the need for a third discipline, namely, spiritual formation.Other challenges are discussed by McMinn as well. For example, he points out the need for a scientific basis, an ethical standard, and challenging the dominate models of mental health.
In the second chapter McMinn (1996) offers a more "detailed map" to reaching a healthy mental state (p. 44) in contrast with that of the scientific and theological models of psychology. He suggests that spiritual and psychological health go hand in hand and include a healthy sense of self, accurate awareness of need, and healing relationships.By incorporating all three disciplines, psychological, theological and spiritual formation, a more balanced model of psychological and spiritual healing is created.
The remainder of the book is dedicated to discussion on how and when a Christian counselor can utilize the basic tenants of faith in such a way that it promotes mental health in his/her clients. The first spiritual discipline McMinn (1996) examines is prayer. The author examines the psychological properties of prayer as a counseling technique, the types of prayer which may be utilized, and a discussion on when to use or not to use prayer with a client. He concludes that more research is needed on the uses of different types of prayer with clients but warns that although it is a fundamental discipline for the Christian, it is not always an appropriate technique in therapy.
The use of scripture is another discipline that McMinn (1996) warns is not always appropriate in the counseling session and this is evident as research indicates that few Christian counselors use this technique.Although McMinn points out that scripture is powerful and certainly has its place in some situations, he reminds the reader that real change takes place when the client can assimilate his counseling experiences outside the session and in his real life.Once again, McMinn warns that whatever the discipline of faith that is being used, it should be delivered with humility by a counselor who is living Christ-like in his/her personal life.
McMinn (1996) engages in a discussion regarding the relationship between sin, confession, and forgiveness in the next three chapters of this book.First dealing with the concept of sin and the importance in understanding sin from a theological perspective, McMinn then discusses how a counselor can address sin with humility bringing the client to a point of accepting forgiveness.Regarding the subject of forgiveness, McMinn considers the current popular attitudes regarding the role of forgiveness and the corresponding research available.Forgiveness as a Christian duty is examined as well as how one can best assist the client in maturing spiritual to be in a better position to accomplish forgiveness. In conclusion, McMinn touches on the subject of redemption as a worldview. He provides examples of how a redemptive relationship can be established within different models of therapy such as object relations, cognitive, and Adlerian.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review and reflection

This book was written to answer an important question to many people that are in the field of counseling and some that are not. That question is
"how does a counselor integrate their faith in the therapy session, a faith that includes psychology and theology?"Many people struggle with this very question. We live in a world that is seemingly growing toward a "don't bring Christ into this" mentality because we are afraid we might offend someone. Some Counselors want to help people and they know that Christ can help, yet do not know how to incorporate that into their counseling methods or approaches. These are the things that McMinn tries to address. He does this in practical ways using the spiritual disciplines, counseling examples and scripture.

McMinn also explains the definitions, similarities, and differences between Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality. He writes in away that breaks down the terms and issues in away for the reader to understand and apply. The book is written for anyone who wishes to understand how they can truly integrate these three concepts into the therapy session. This book excels at helping the reader integrate spiritual disciplines that we as Christians should live by into the counseling session and also encourages the counselor if they are not incorporating these disciplines in their walk with the Lord, to do so.

This book really seeks to teach the counselor to multitask in the three categories of Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality. He suggest that the counselor who can learn to do this effectively will be able to give their clients the very best. This is not an easy task for any Christian Counselor however, it can and will be rewarding for both the counselor and the counselee.

Concrete Response

I think the book relates to my personal life and ministry the most in the section of dealing with sin in the therapy sessions.McMinn States "In Christian counseling, sin can be confronted in humble and empathic ways that encourage spiritual growth more than guilt and shame. These methods include silence at strategic moments, pondering aloud inconsistencies in client's narratives, and questioning clients in order to understand their values of right and wrong." (McMinn, 1996, p. 162)Because I work with teenagers, I have come to learn that a strategic silence is one of my biggest "tools".Most teenagers know what they are doing is wrong, or they know I will disapprove of what they are doing. Then that follows what McMinn talks about in understanding their values and understanding of sin.In reading this, I was reminded of one of the most intimidating and scary confrontations I had to deal with two teenagers.Walking into meet with two teenagers separately about sexual activity in the church, well let's say that moment of strategic silence, questioning, and value system came into play. After long discussions, crying, prayer and the initial "I can't believe my youth ministers know I done this" reaction, I was able to understand how their family values corresponded with their actions.Needless to say when I read this in this book, it was great to see that how I handled it was actually an okay, or good approach.

Reflection

This is a good book for anyone who wants to learn more on how into integrate their faith and psychology together.I enjoy how McMinn uses the spiritual disciplines as stepping stones in the incorporating of a counselor's spirituality into the therapy session. In the section on prayer he does a great job of introducing prayer into the therapy sessions.Prayer is an important part to the Christian's life, and cannot be left out in the therapy session.

The only question that I have is in the sections dealing with sin.The author gives five approaches to confronting a client's sins they are "silence, pondering, questioning, direct censure, and not confronting the sin." (McMinn, 1996, pg.137). I am not sure I completely agree with the last approach of not confronting sin.I believe that we must be looking at our own lives first, second we must have the right attitude and motive of confronting sin, but we must as Christians hold each other accountable. I work with students and I deal with confronting their sins, and dealing with their problems on what seems a daily basis, however I am still learning about dealing with sin in the counseling sessions, but I do not think that you can ignore sin completely in the therapy session.

Action

This book does a great job at showing not only how to integrate psychology, theology and spirituality into the counseling sessions, but the need to do so for the Christian counselors.I would recommend this book for anyone who is going into the field of counseling, and I would also tell people of the truths in this book. Christians are called to be set apart, and to be salt and light in the world in which they live. That means that Christ must be at the heart of everything a Christian counselor does and says.In the dual role of both a Christian and a counselor this is more evident than ever. This writer believes that being a counselor is a high calling from the Lord just as any other profession including the call to ministry, and that He has invited us to partner with Him in the soul care and healing of a broken world. For Christian counselors, Christ and the teaching of scripture must be at the heart and foundation of every session. It is with the guiding of the Holy Spirit and the healing power of Christ, that we partner with modern technology, medicine and psychology to help people heal and have a healthier and fuller life. Also, as McMinn points out in his section on prayer, that prayer is communication with God and it is the "Holy Spirit who heals." (McMinn, 1996, p. 69)

Christian's posses something that no one else has and it is the power of Christ. He can make things happen in us that we cannot do by ourselves.Titus 3:5-6 states "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal of by the Holy Spirit, who he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior."
