5-0 out of 5 stars Home Schooler's delight
This is a really great book if you need a book to help you teach your children geography, especially at home. Very interesting and holds the child's attention, but also yours!! It is full of ideas and extra activities and brings geography to life. Suits my 5-10s best, but has added ideas for the older student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting, colorful, hands-on geography
I love that "A Child's Geography" is written so simply, yet gives a wonderful depth of relavent information that leads the teacher and student on a wonderful journey through the Holy Land.It gives hands on activities and lists other outside sources that draw the student closer to the subject, tying the student to the place being studied. Some of the activities include notebooking & mapping activities, recipes, Prayer Walk for each country, a focus on art, music, poetry and food, and just brings it to life with text that is written with the curious student in mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Overview of an Important Part of God's World
Knowledge Quest has done a phenomenal job creating this new study on the Middle East. Our family has thoroughly enjoyed the arm-chair-style narrative ofthe countries of this region, countries often heard about but often misunderstood. As a family we want to develop a love for this part of the world, and this study has provided an excellent foundation! We would highly recommend this study and others by this company (A child's Geography is another family favorite)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Living Book
This book is a gem! It is written conversationally, and is engaging without being patronizing. It is written from a distinctly Christian viewpoint, but treats the people of this non-Christian region with a great deal of respect. There are narration prompts at the end of each section and either a recipe, poem or craft at the end of each chapter. It also has a few suggestions for supplemental reading. We love this book! I hope that the authors will write other volumes (and quickly, we are almost done with this one!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Explore the Holy Land from your Living Room
Ann Voskamps second volume of geography is, if possible, even better than the first. In this volume she takes us on a geographical, narrated, journey of the Holy Land. I know very little about this area of the world, but my whole family has enjoyed learning through this book. The discussion, pictures, links, and information are all current and the photos are crisp and bright and unique! We have enjoyed vicariously and hope one day to actually take our family to this amazing birthplace of humanity and when we do I am certain that the things they remember will be the things we read about in this book-its almost like a travelog, but with activities, writing exercises and interactive links to make the holy land really come alive in your living room. A great, gentle, interesting read and I highly recommend it. I have homeschooled 5 kids who range now from 24 down to 8 and I only wish I had this book when my older kids were younger! I wouldn't have had to look for anything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, great tool
wonderful tool for creating fun activities and lessons on essential skills. The layout is amazingly detailed. It includes all maps, drawings you might need for the activity and a list at the front of each activity with any materials you will need.It also provides a step by step suggestion for use.And the activities are cool!Sixteen different lesson sets - it recommends 2 days for each set but some classes will need more. Also includes a few pages at back about grouping students, a list of possible roles and also possible incentives. All activities are based ongetting the students involved and, of course, using their hands as well as their minds- and these are thought provoking activities here!No mindless coloring. It is a good sized book, larger than most workbook or activity books you find - 175 pages.Really, Really glad I bought this book - it's worth every penny! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rookie Reader - Texas
We are a homeschooling family and are currently doing a study of the states.I am always happy to be able to find books that my struggling 3rd grade son is able to read and enjoy.I believe the books in this series have accomplished that.We have enjoyed the books in this series very much.

Most of the states I've been able to request through ourlibrary system. This particular one was not available but since my husband is from Texas I wanted to make this one available to our son.So I purchased this one.

Through our local library and a few other purchases my son has read many of the books in this series. Not just in Geography but many others in the Rookie Read About Science/Health/Math/Holidays books that are also available.

I think even if the child is not a struggling reader these are still good, informative and interesting books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Conversation Unfolds

Here is a book for those who are on the spiritual journey and are looking for a wise and creative friend to walk with.In the same way that a good conversation unfolds over a leisurely cup of coffee or on a refreshing drive through the countryside, Lindvall brings to the discussion so many stimulating insights that we are glad to have shared this time with him.

Michael Lindvall is known as the author of two wonderful collections of "life in the parish" essays about the fictional "North Haven" congregation that are so tenderly written and satisfying that we can understand why he is so well-thought of as the pastor of the large, historically significant and currently thriving Brick Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.

In this new release, Lindvall presents a guide to the landscape of the Christian journey. His short chapters are filled with excellent observations about the realities of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the way of faith.Lindvall not only includes wonderful illustrations and references to great theological thinkers and literary giants of the past, but also apt observations about contemporary life. Those who love to read, will meet many old friends and new in these pages, from Albert Schweitzer and Tony Campolo to Charles Schultz and Thomas Merton, all in a lively "Christian Round Table" mix of contributions to stimulate reflection on the life of faith.

One of the key observations Lindvall makes is that a life of faith is a combination of trust and belief. That they are two sides of the same coin. This is a good way of bringing together the sometimes divergent tendencies in one's spiritual journey. Indeed, one could say that Lindvall offers a gentle encouragement to each of us, to explore that side of the coin we may have been undervaluing heretofore.

It is quite possible that many of these chapters were first presented as sermons for his congregation and if so, we can understand why Lindvall makes these connections between the Bible, the lives of Christians of the past, and the concerns of the present day. This interplay between the gospel and grace on the one hand, and dally life on the other, is the requirement of a preacher, and Lindvall presents this interplay in a refreshing style,

There is much here to revisit and ponder. As Katie Couric says in a short quote on the front of the book, "Michael Lindvall is the perfect guide for wherever you are on your spiritual journey--walking alongside you as a compassionate, tolerant companion with a keen intellect that is exciting and energizing."

If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and accessible
Each of us is on a faith journey, though we may all be at different places. Some may be just beginning; others may be further along but plodding, or even wandering far off the track. And some of us may be nearing the end, or at least think we are.Regardless of where you are, this book provides a "road map" to see more clearly where you are going or where you have been.

Lindvall, Senior Pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City, has written an easy-to-understand, slim volume that is divided into three sections:"Leaving for Home," "The Way," and "Life on the Road."He answers questions that many have about atonement, forgiveness, prayer, the importance of belonging to a church, what should happen in worship, how to read the Bible, the part that creeds play, the trinity, and other matters. However, he does not do this in either a technical or a preachy way, but in a way that makes sense.Like all good preachers, he has many stories to tell that both entertain and instruct.

If you have never read a book about the Christian faith, this isn't a bad place to start. And if you have read many, as I have, you'll still be entranced.I expect this is a book that would work well for a class or discussion group, and I hope to use it that way myself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good as a starting place
I had this book as a kid, and I enjoyed looking through it, but didn't learn much from it.I got this as a basic guide to help my kids learn about the states. We homeschool, and this book is serving as an introduction to the states, supplemented with books from the library about the people, places and events mentioned in this book. There isn't much information on each state, just a few, almost random facts. It works for us, but I would not recommend this book to someone else.I got it mostly because I was familiar with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The layout is nice, but it could have been written better
The activities in this book are complicated and dull. Example:
Make a movie in your mind. When you think "south" think "S" for sun. What is the sun shining on? It's shining on Christmas carolers who are standing on top of the space shuttle, Columbia, as it's landing. Now that would be some sight, wouldn't it? Sunny south with carolers = South Carolina.Picture the space shuttle, Columbia.Columbia = Columbia.Columbia, South Carolina.

My daughter gave up on this book pretty quickly, and I don't blame her.
The black and white pictures aren't always clear. It took me a while to realize that the smudge on the South Carolina page is actually supposed to represent the bombing of Fort Sumter.

I would encourage the authors to try this book again, but to have a panel of children give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down to the activities. And fix the graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars great learning tool
We just got the book kids learn america for our homeschool. As a family we hope to learn more about the nation that we live in.The first state in the book is connecticut. It talks about Mark Twain living and writing there. So that opened a discussion on his writing as we will be watching a movie based on his writings tonight as a family.I look forward to learn more as we got through this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Information Source For Children
Did you know that Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" has an amazing 90 lakes called Long Lake?Or did you know that the two Choctaw Indian words "okla," meaning people, and "humma," meaning red, makes up the state Oklahoma?Well, these facts along with a plethora of other information can be obtained in this fantastic book.

This book is absolutely perfect for children. Each state is consisely laid out in an easy-to-read format that is loaded with information. The drawings are also excellent in peppering the pages to break up all of the details.

This is a type of hands-on book that challanges children to learn about their country in fifty educationally-fun geography lessons. This book gives its readers a lesson in human spirit by teachinga little bit about America's past, while imploring everyone to partake in it's future. This book is a must read for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase
I was very pleased with this purchase. My textbook was in excellent condition and at a great price.I also received it promptly.I would buy from this seller again!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of different graphics and quesitons
I'm currently using the book and the lab manual for my geog classes. I love the book but this lab manual has some serious problems with the graphics and questions. As I and our class have discovered, these lab manuals tend to have different size graphics printed on them which makes it difficult to perform measurements from the images or get the same answer as others. We have also discovered that some of the copies tend to have different questions on the exercises.

We keep having to tell the professor about the issue so that we don't get docked for the lab work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Missing Pages!
I received the Lab manual in a timely manner. What I didn't realize when I received it was that it was missing pages. Unfortunately I didn't discover the missing pages until 2 weeks after school started. I now am being forced to photocopy the lab exercise's I'm missing from my fellow classmates. I would have liked to have been informed from the beginning that the book I was purchasing was not complete. If I would have known this from the beginning I would not have wasted my money. There were plenty of other listing, apparently I chose the wrong seller!! Buyers beware!!

PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, Ninth Edition, uses the combined expertise of four respected geographers to show how Earth?s physical geography impacts humans, and how humans impact Earth?s physical geography. The text emphasizes three essential themes to demonstrate the major roles for the discipline -- Geography as a Physical Science, Geography as the Spatial Science, and Geography as Environmental Science. With a renewed focus on examining relationships and processes among Earth systems, this text will help you understand how the various systems interrelate and how humans are an integral aspect of geography. Historically the first book to take a conservation approach, the authors continue to emphasize the theme of environmental and human impacts. ... Read more

What all can I say? I had to order it for school. I will say though I hate how text book prices flux so much. Product Description

Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities, including commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this textbook.

The second edition of "The Geography of transport systems" maintains the overall structure of its predecessor, with chapters dealing with specific conceptual dimensions and methodologies, but the contents have been revised and updated. The second edition also offers new topics and approaches that have emerged as critical issues in contemporary transport systems, including security, energy, supply chain management and GIS-T. Relevant case studies have also been included in the second edition to underline real world issues related to transport geography.

Some key points of the second edition:

  • Updated and revised conceptual and methodological material to reflect the most current issues in transport geography.
  • A case study for each chapter addressing a real world transportation geography issue.
  • Reorganization of the text to improve readability and continuity.
  • Updated and improved figures and maps.
  • Continuously updated and revised supporting web site.

Mainly aimed at an undergraduate audience, this edition of "The Geography of transport systems" provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field with a broad overview of its concepts, methods and areas of application. It is highly illustrated and a companion web site has also been enhanced for the book. It contains PowerPoint slides, exercises, databases and GIS datasets and can be accessed at http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-explanatory
This is a book I've wanted to lay my hands on for a long time. This is a book that every geographer with an interest in transportation should read. It is also a book that every transportationist with a sense for geography should read. Even if your main focus is just transportation and nowhere near geography, this book will fascinate, because it so brilliantly explains, explores, researches and reviews the spatial impact of transportation systems and how they have shaped the world that surrounds us.

Transportation networks are the main arteries of society, ensuring a 24/7 operation ofthe community we live in. Transportation systems are also essential to supply chains. Without a proper transportation system supply chains cannot function properly. However, the menial day-to-day operations related to transportation are often overlooked in supply chain management. This book goes a long way in bridging this gap, as it touches upon topics such as freight transport and locations of terminals. It also extends the term supply chain by introducing a new term: the commodity chain.

It is not often that I fall in love with textbooks at first sight, and this is a book that will not spend much time collecting dust in my bookshelf, as I will read and use it again and again...

2-0 out of 5 stars Distracting
There is blue highlighting throughout the text book which is extremely distracting and makes it difficult to read. Blue high-lighted books should come with a warning.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mighty effort that needs more perusal....
This reviewer can find no bibliographic data on THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA by Hardwick, et al. (Prentice-Hall, 2007) beyond Amazon's product listing (which is actually the one site in five I checked that actually showed page count: 704).And prior to this, no reviews at all on Amazon.Pity!THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA deserves better.

If I were a professor and wanted to order an exam copy for review, there are channels for that thru Prentice-Hall, the publisher, to get a freebie. But single-copy sales seem arduous, and I should not claim I am a college teacher any more. The best way is probably Amazon, though first I'd have to convince myself I need or want the book at the price.I don't think I have enough information to do that.

Thus far I have read the first chapter of the book, which is available free, online. As you might expect, it is written in a comfortable, conversational tone but offers insights into what is going to be discussed. In that sense it does a good deal of offering introduction to "methodology" without scaring newbie college students away with such terms.

The photo on the cover is a knockout! If memory serves it is a NOAA rendition of the USA taken from space, at night. My first geography teacher back at the University of Virginia - Wise introduced us to the concept of the "dry line," which separates arid steppe-like land to the west from land with sufficient rainfall for crops to the east.Note how easy that is to visualize with modern technology. If you want to confirm this in a paper mode, get a free copy of the state highway map of Kansas or Nebraska. You'll see the dry line very starkly on those states' maps, at the sudden fall-off of the density of towns and roads. (You could practically draw the north-south line of demarcation with a pencil.)

Makes sense! But consider that several generations of geographers have carefully measured such phenomena and crafted climate systems maps, where it can be scientifically measured just where the dry line occurs -- indeed, where the corn falls off and the wheat and milo begin. And from there we infer that soil, climate, latitude and longitude and land form combine to give us a real appreciation of ecology, in that the climatic and the terrestrial so often combine to maintain and reinforce themselves.

This book looks like a great way to begin.Sadly, among the scores of Geography Department college faculty in this great nation, and the hundreds if not thousands of students who major in it, NO ONE has written a content review even though THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA has been in print steadily for almost two years (since August 2007).

If I can gain access to the entire book, you can bet I'll file a new review -- and if one sip of the wine speaks for the entire bottle, a better review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Positives and Negatives
My thoughts:
Positive:

* This went with my my theme of reading novels written in poetry.
* It reminded me of how I was in high school. I was kinda lost and floating through friends. Although, I never ran away.
* It's much like a movie.

Negative:

* It's extremely sad with no real ending.
* I think that she doesn't ever realize how much she was taken advantage of and that would have been a strong lesson to learn.
* It can be a little bit too like a movie and not completely believable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lovely writing but doesn't resonate with 14 year old or parent

The "Geography of Girlhood" chronicles the woes and ways of Penny, a girl we follow in verse through ages 14 to about 16.Penny has a wayward older sister who is hell bent on taking every bad path she can find, a dysfunctional and I believe dead mother, and a father who is trying to cope with an angst-ridden teen and the wayward older daughter on his own.Penny's father eventually marries and brings a new wife and step-brother into the mix.In the end Penny grows a bit and discovers her step-brother isn't so bad; her life is her life and she needs to accept it.

I can't really say I identified with this novel - I despise teen angst.I didn't like it when I was surrounded by it as a teen.My own 14-year-old daughter read this book before I did. She said that she didn't get it.I think you had to have had a stormy girlhood or a dramatic nature to get most of this.I am sorry I cannot give this a better review - I am ill equipped. The writing itself was lovely and vivid and engaging.I think it is a grand idea. But just as every person is different, there are many maps of life to follow. This just wasn't mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming young adult book
This is the story of Penny Morrow, who, like so many others at any given time, is in the process of growing up and leaving childhood behind.

Penny is ready for this. There have been things in her life, in the past, that Penny has not been ready for--like losing her mother. She wants to grow up and live outside of her home and family now. Outside of the house, she goes to parties and meets a boy. Inside it, she gets a new stepmother and stepbrother. Penny is growing up and her life is changing, and there's no turning back the clock.

The Geography of Girlhood is a great story told in wonderful free-verse poetry that flows nicely and is easily understood. It's easy to follow the story and appreciate the poetry at the same time.

Kristen Smith has written various popular movies and her poetry has appeared many places, so it is not surprising that she has chosen a verse novel to write; combining two things she knows best, good stories and great poetry.

Kirsten Smith has told a brilliant story that is even more brilliant because of the form in which it is told, in verse. Even people who do not believe that they like poetry will be pulled into this story, with its lifelike characters and a plot that can be understood by anyone who has been through or is going through the often painful process of growing up--that is to say, all of us.

Armchair Interviews says: Nice, nice read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Prose.
After reading Jennifer Bryant 's Pieces of Georgia (a worthwhile read), a book written in stanzas, I combed my library for another book written in a similar manner. I came across Girlhood and couldn't wait to read it.

Sadly, I was quite disappointed. The problem with this book isn't so much the story, it's how it's written. Smith puts forth an extremely obvious effort to come off as arty and thoughtful, but the result is distracting words and obnoxious titles for every page that get in the way of the story. The book itself isn't that bad, it's all cliché of teenage novels, nothing amazing, nothing out of the ordinary.

If you choose to go ahead and read this book, just be warned: you have to work through it.

Would I read it again? Most likely not. Would I recommend it? Sure... if I didn't like the person I was offering it to =P

Novels told in verse usually fall into two categories: those that simply tell a story with poetry, and those that manage to capture a life so eloquently in verse that you fall headfirst into the story.THE GEOGRAPHY OF GIRLHOOD, thankfully, falls into the latter category.Kirsten Smith has managed to pen, through verse, the story of fourteen-year old Penny Marrow, a girl you will laugh with, cry with, and get to know very, very well within the pages of this book.

Penny's older sister, Tara, was blessed with the beauty, and the ability to cut her sister down with only a glance. Her father's hope is simply that his daughters will have listened to him enough to stay away from bad boys and make a place for themselves in the world. And as for her mother? She left when Penny was six, and the only thing Penny has to remind her of her mom is a snow globe. Now she has a stepmother, and a younger stepbrother, and a family life that can be summed up with "don't be like your sister."

For Penny, life is confusing, with the fights her friends have regularly and the first kiss that makes her faint and the huge infatuation she has on her sister's boyfriend. But behind it all is the wish that her mother would just come home, would be returned by the aliens who abducted her or whatever, and make everything better. For Penny, watching her father change and her sister change and herself change is too much to take without a mother. But years pass, and when she finally gets one thing that she wants--which is Bobby--it's not at all like she expected, and she loses friends and gains new acquaintances and still, in the back of her mind, she wants her mother.

THE GEOGRAPHY OF GIRLHOOD is sweet and bitter, a poignant story filled with joy and heartbreak about growing up and learning to let go and first love.Thankfully, this is a book told in verse that you won't soon forget, a definite recommended read.

This prep book greatly helped me in studying to for the AP Human Geography exam. The course I took in school only met weekly and did not cover a wide body of material. However, this book has a comprehensive overview of all the topics on the AP Human Geography exam with practice questions and full length exams. This book was a great tool and definitely helped me to get the 5 I got on the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprise
My daughter scoffed when I bought this and some general study-skills books, but when preparing for her next test, she came up to me and hugged me and said "thanks, mom" because it had some detail not in her textbook. So I am giving it five stars as a reward for a special moment of parent appreciation. ... Read more

Definitely not a leisure read. This is quite possibly the hardest book I have ever read. The authors are to wordy and drag out sentences making it hard to follow their train of thought. So if its not a required book for a class find a different book.
