5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Service
The book was exactly as described. It shipped super fast and pricing was very reasonable. Being a college student, I shop around for the best deals for my books and this was by far the best. I paid almost $50 less than what my school was offering to buy the book used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service
The service was as advertised as was the book itsel.Great condition and saved lots of money with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing
I bought this book because it was required for my college Human Geography class. Each chapter has around 20 pages of condensed information separated into nine sections along with a chapter summery and a list of terms. There are a ton of pictures and graphs throughout the book as well, which is definitely helpful because it keeps your attention on the information. It's one of the best textbooks I've gotten this year as it displays the information in a clear and concise manner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful and thorough look at Ge
This book starts each chapter with a nearly intangible discussion of the philosophical aspects of geography for the respective period, then gets into very good summaries of the period, its key players and concepts. Its also sprinkled with great examples of work that illustrates research at the various periods which help cement the concepts.

I expect this will be a useful reference for those time when I forget the difference between structuration theory and realism.

5-0 out of 5 stars A model text
This book is now out in a third edition (SAGE Publications, 1999). It is a book about geography, but I review it as a model on how an author in one of the (social) sciences can analyze his discipline in a philosophical way.------ The book presents different philosophical positions such aspositivism, marxism, structuralism, realism and poststructuralism in aclear way and describes how such positions have influenced the developmentof geography. In my opinion such philosophical analysis of (social)sciences are rare, but extremely important. I whish I knew of similarqualified books in all other domains. Such books shows that sciences arebuilt on assumptions, that can be questioned and they help developingcritical thinking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Geography
This book was selected for a resource for my 6th grade class. It has great information for teaching or learning about the various components of geography. It has various types of maps of the seven continents. It helps with identifying geography like the continents, countries, states, capitals, and states. It also provides activity sheets on Map skills with scenarios, landforms, and etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally out-of-date
I was careless and didn't note the copyright of this book--1992--or the dates on the previous reviews. In 1992, the activities would have been fine; but when the book discusses the formation of the European Union as a work in progress or shows Yugoslavia as a country of Europe or describes the economies of countries with 17-year-old data, at least half the book is totally unusable.I do not understand why this book has not been updated because if it had, it would be a valuable addition to any geography classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but needs updating.
I would highly recommend this book except that it is outdated.Found a few errors, but I loved it otherwise.Hope the author has an updated version. The activities make learning fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great effort and fantastic help for Social Studies
The fact that teachers and students can copy the pages to do puzzles or color the maps is great since students get a hands on involvement with the text.

I want to suggest another book as a companion to this atlas.Myclasses have enjoyed a cute little book titled: Humpty Dumpty Sat on theGlobe by Fereydoun Kian.

Mr. Kian's book can go hand in hand with Dr.Silver's puzzles.Once children associate the map of the country they seein this Ready to Use World Geography and the images that Mr. Kian hasconjured up in Humpty Dumpty Sat on the Globe, they will remember all thefuns of puzzles and stories combined.

I have to also thank Ms.Ciavarella's lively and colorful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flex Format Edition
This paperback edition is just as good as the hardcover edition as far as I know. There's also a less-known edition called the flex format edition that's supposedly identical but fits in a 3-ring binder. The ISBN for that one is 978-0471752523 and they look to be even cheaper than this one ($40).

I bought this book for a class that I am taking. The book is very very dry. But besides that I have the book to pass the class.

~History Nerd~

5-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook
Very readable and enjoyable, even to a layman. The opening chapter with the history of political geography is a bit of a slog, but the rest is interesting and well-informed and a sly opinion has crept past the editor here and there.I really enjoyed this and found it quite interesting.I should note, though, that if you read a majornewspaper everyday and several political magazines, much of this is stuff you already know. This is certainly a survey textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take it from a student of Fahrer...
I attend Georgia College and State University and my Political Geography teacher just so happens to be Dr. Chuck Fahrer, author of this book.Take it from me, You have never met a man with such a passion for Geography! If other teachers use his work as an appriopriate learning tool they should get a lot out of it.Its very well put together and is extremely easy to comprehend. If Geography is your cup of tea, then you need to sit down with Dr. Fahrer's text and enlighten yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book
It is quite interesting and covers a large number of areas. It expanded my knowledge. Also, buying it used is very inexpensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars Political Geography
If you are looking for a solid text book in the field of Political Geography, Mr. Glassner book is the one for you.Easy to read and well organized, a novice will get a lot out of this book. I would also recommend this book for those in the fields of Political Science, Economics and History for it lays out the fundamentals, of a significant school of thought, in 18th and 19th C Europe early state-relations. But, if you already understand the basics of Political Geography and are looking to expand your understanding of the origin, its under lying philosophy or the actors who developed and played a substantial role in the development of this subject -- save your money. For the serious students of Political Geography there are a couple of chapters that may be of interest to you but, only a few and it's not worth the money.
But what I truly believe is the best part of the book is the reference section at the end of each chapter. There is a wealth of information in the reference section for the student of Political Geography, which can prove to be invaluable when doing research. ... Read more

Product Description
From its introduction by Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu to the epilogue by the Dalai Lama, Geography of Religion encourages new understanding of the world's great religions and of their evolution from ancient roots to vital roles in modern life. With a text as fascinating as it is authoritative; vivid photographs that evoke the reverence, rituals, and rewards of each spiritual tradition; and a rich variety of essays, sidebars, and maps, this magnificent book charts the many paths that guide us to God.

Chapters on each of the 5 major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—explore the landscapes and cultures where they took hold and flourished. Eminent scholars share the faiths they live and study, revealing their sacred scriptures and rites. Every page offers new insights into religious history and doctrine, along with stunning images of believers at prayer, the holy places they cherish, and their houses of worship—from soaring cathedrals and magnificent mosques to humble shrines infused with a blessed simplicity.

Fittingly, each chapter closes with a photo-essay on pilgrims and their devotional journeys—a wonderful visual reminder that no matter which faith we may embrace, we are all fellow travelers in our search for the truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This book is a must read for anyone who hasn't had a formal introduction to the world's five largest religions. The book is loaded with concise and relevant information and beautiful photography. A basic understanding of these religions goes along way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This book has absolutely beautiful pictures. We gave it as a gift to someone that is very knowledgable about different world religions and he enjoyed it.I was proud to have found such a nice, complete book, and I will be buying one for my own family.

4-0 out of 5 stars A model for visual history of the faithful
This is a collection of visuals on a) the religions - east and west - and b) about religious experiences - past and present.

Herein, the two academic experts as editors, i.e., Hitchcock &Esposito, have added-value to the visual history with a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter the Rev. Mpho Tutu and an epilogue by H.H. The Dalai Lama.

In the 416 pages, Geography of Religion is focused on five religions, viz., Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. "For each of 5 major religions, explore the landscapes, areas, and cultures where these faiths took hold and flourished. See them spread around the world, survive conflict, and translate into other enduring faiths based on their geographic location and cultures. Learn what it means to be a Hindu and bathe in the sacred Ganges; for a Buddhist to revere a statue of the Enlightened One; for a Muslim to trek to Mecca; for Christian martyrs to welcome death. Beautiful maps, photographs, and art illuminate the history of each religion."

This book is, then, useful resource for public libraries, as well specialized libraries, in the areas of art, architecture, etc. More specifically, high school students will find interesting content in this visual geography and its related discussions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous blend of history, culture, and religious insight
National Geographic's lovely Geography Of Religion: Where God Lives, Where Pilgrims Walk opens with a bang - an introduction by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter the Rev. Mpho Tutu - and continues to present astounding detail and revelations all the way to the Epilogue by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. Here are 200 illustrating ranging from photos and examples of sacred art from around the world to maps, discussions of great leaders and faiths of the five great religions, and a timeline of events following their spread around the world. A gorgeous blend of history, culture, and religious insight.

Product Description
This debut edition of Visualizing Physical Geography encompasses the science of physical geography from local to global scales, using a uniquely visual approach to take students on a journey from the top layers of the Earth’s atmosphere to the rocks underlying the ocean basins to the forests of the farthest continents. As students explore the critical topics of physical geography, their study of the climate, surface features, and habitats around the world uses basic concepts of ecology, geology, chemistry, environmental science, biology, and physics and many other disciplines. Visualizing Physical Geography reinforces these interacting components and, with its premier art program (in partnership with National Geographic), vividly illustrates the interconnectedness of physical processes that weave together to create our planet’s dynamic surface and atmosphere.

Visualizing Geography relies heavily on the integration of National Geographic and other visuals with text to elucidate concepts for students and solidify their understanding of them. The goal is to help students understand the world around them and interpret what they see in a meaningful, accurate and exciting way. The content, design and layout of the text takes advantage of the full capacity in which students process information – visual as well as verbal.

Visualizing Geography also helps students examine their own personal studying and learning styles with several new pedagogical aids -- encouraging students to apply what they are learning to their everyday lives. Visualizing Geography continues to offer ongoing study tips and psychological techniques for mastering the material.  Most importantly students are provided with numerous opportunities to immediately access their understanding.   ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook with Awesome Pictures!
I purchased this book for my Geography class, and I have found it to be very informative. The National Geographic pictures are great and really help to "visualize" the information. The text is easy to read and understand. The visuals are helpful.I really like that it gives definitions of all of the vocab words off to the side of the text so I can easily understand it.Love the pictures!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Graphics, Nice Textbook
This book is a great addition to the list of Physical Geography textbooks. The images and figures are large, high quality, and really help make the material more understandable -- as was the intent!Over all, the text in the book is well written.Alan Stahler is no newcomer to textbook authoring.I have used some of his other Physical Geography texts in my classes before and found them to be just fine. For the most part, Physical Geography textbooks are all quite well written, and are very similar in content. In my experience they are almost interchangeable -- all very good, but none really outstanding, Strahler's other texts included. This book is different, and much better, because of the "visual" approach.I have one major complaint, though (which resulted in my 4-star rating): Strahler's treatment of climate zones. Why does he not follow the Koppen Climate Classification system?I treat climate zones and their associated biomes as the foundation of my class. The Koppen system is logical, understandable, and students can more easily understand how climates are classified by using temperature and precipitation variables.I like the Koppen system!Strahler disregards this system and imposes his own.Gone are the two- or three-letter disignations which, themselves, explain how each zone is classified and where (with respect to latitude) each is located. Strahler's classificaion by names only is not as useful, period. The collaboration with National Geographic, and their great images, is wonderful, and makes the textbook something great. The actual text is good, like every other physical geography textbook, but I find the Stahler approach to climate zones to be quite irritating. ... In today’s world, what happens in places depends more and more on what happens among places. Introduction to Geography: People, Places, and Environment, Fifth Edition demonstrates that fact—and shows that we can understand mapped patterns only if we recognize the movement that creates and continuously rearranges those patterns. The authors discuss what happens in one set of geographic processes and how that process affects others. For example, what happens in economic systems affects environmental conditions; what happens to climate affects political dynamics. This text will introduce you to the major tools, techniques, and methodological approaches of the discipline of geography. ... Read more

Book was as stated, very smooth transaction, and an awesome price on book that blows college bookstore out of the water!.... thanx

4-0 out of 5 stars I ternet hoax about this booko
According to an email being circulated in Brazil in Portuguese, this book is an American junior high school text claiming erroneously that the Amazon basin has been internationalized because the USA needs to preserve the Amazon from "primitive and violent" people (!). The email warns about American designs on Brazilian resources.Brazilian readers of this site should be aware that this email is a total fabrication and a complete hoax. This text is a legitimate textbook. It would not be used by geography teachers in the USA if it made such outlandish comments.

People should note the differences in English style between the excerpts from the real textbook (which we can preview here) and the faked excerpts accompanying the junk email. The real textbook has a good style, typical of an educated native speaker of English, while the "excerpts" attached to the email are full of the kind of grammatical mistakes foreign learners of English often make.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This shorter version of the highly successful Contemporary World Regional Geography, 3e gives readers a fresh new approach that combines fundamental geographical elements, internal regional diversity, and contemporary issues. This approach allows serious discussion of cultural and environmental issues, as well as political and economic issues. The main innovation in this completely rewritten text is in the ordering of the material covered. While other texts cut photos, illustrations, and boxed material from their WRG books, this essentials version is a completely rewritten text by the authors of Contemporary World Regional Geography, 3e.

Each of the nine regional chapters opens with a one- or two-page map of the region, short accounts of people or events to provide a personal flavor of the region, an outline of the chapter contents, and a short section placing the region in its wider global context. Each regional chapter is consistently organized by three sections. The first section summarizes the distinctive physical and human geographies of the region; the second section explores the internal diversity of the region at subregional, selected country, and local levels. The third section focuses on a selection of contemporary issues that are important to the people of each region and frequently have implications for the rest of the world. Each regional chapter follows the same framework, allowing students to easily make comparisons from one world region to the next.

Students are encouraged to consider what it means to be part of a global community and to develop their geographical understandings of world events. The authors have created a text that is readable, with a consistent structure within chapters, containing superior maps and illustrations, and finally – to offer a concise and more affordable text. ... Hi.When I recieved the book, it was in great shape.I recieved it in a very timely manner, even before I was told it would be to me.Thanks for being prompt.I ordered the book to late for when my class was starting, though when I recieved it I was only into the 2nd day of class. It made doing my assignments alot easier.I like ordering my textbooks from amazon, they are great quality and a fraction of the price of my college bookstore.I will continue to purchase books through amazon as long as they have the books I need.I applaud you for a job well done.Paula Sachse

The book was in great condition and I received it in a decent time frame! Thank You!!

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I had to pay over $100 for this text!
This is the only textbook I have ever come to hate.Reading this author for the required reading text assignments every day nearly drove me batty. He makes sweeping generalities and the text is riddled with absolutes.Did you know that ALL Russians need to steal and cheat to get by?Apparently even the babies do it!Cultures without a xtian/catholic-based religion are called irreligious with vaccuums of belief that only money fills, and yet at the same time "Modern capitalism has a moral base" that is built on people within it trusting each other.Every country has a section or two about the role of christian/catholic-like religion in it even when the text admits that the country really doesn't support or have many that believe in that way--many times it is to point out how that country is given to executing people who try to spread the western religions to them.At the same time, there is no mention in historically christianish/catholic-based countries that have done the same thing, but to other religions. The book totally ignores spirituality, which can be rather different from religion, give something to believe in, and is more than just philosophy. This text about drove me bonkers and I am very disappointed in my school for choosing it.The bias and absolutes (everyone, no one, all, none, always, never, etc) were pretty obvious to me, but I have to admit that part of it is also how subtle they are. They are woven naturally throughout a text that is otherwise intelligent and informative. This makes it all the more disappointing a text to pick. When you are writing a text on other cultures, you just cannot look at them solely through your own lens and be fair about it.Promoting a text like this encourages students to continue the bias, rather than truly attempt to understand the other culture from their own eyes and experiences.

I would suggest editing out ALL absolutes for future editions and sticking the author's opinion, no matter how supported it seems to be into clearly labeled opinion boxes.Comparisons are a nifty way to learn, but not if, in comparing, you give more weight to your own cultural biases.

Note:I have the 10th edition of this text, I can only hope he at least edited out ALL of his absolutes in the 11th.

All hail the morally-based capitalist system, down with the morally bankrupt peoples who only have money to believe in...and don't forget to pick up your very own Bible on the way out!(sarcasm)
