Product Description

This book explains the roots, politics, and legacy of Korean ethnic nationalism, which is based on the sense of a shared bloodline and ancestry.Belief in a racially distinct and ethnically homogeneous nation is widely shared on both sides of the Korean peninsula, although some scholars believe it is a myth with little historical basis.Finding both positions problematic and treating identity formation as a social and historical construct that has crucial behavioral consequences, this book examines how such a blood-based notion has become a dominant source of Korean identity, overriding other forms of identity in the modern era.It also looks at how the politics of national identity have played out in various contexts in Korea: semicolonialism, civil war, authoritarian politics, democratization, territorial division, and globalization.

Drawing material from dozens of divided societies, Donald L. Horowitz constructs his theory of ethnic conflict, relating ethnic affiliations to kinship and intergroup relations to the fear of domination. A groundbreaking work when it was published in 1985, the book remains an original and powerfully argued comparative analysis of one of the most important forces in the contemporary world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you think you know is wrong...
*ALL* beliefs about ethnic that are commonly accepted in USA and the basis of far-reaching policies are 100% wrong based on the information in this book.US policies actually *increase* ethnic conflict!Don't expect the author to analyze the situation in USA directly - that would force him todrop the good-guy/bad-guy approach that is practically required by lawhere. It's not too hard to read between the lines, though.

Horowitzthinks that the best way to reduce ethnic conflict (elimination beingunrealistic) is to allow each group to become economically specialized. Ethnic specialization is good, in his view, and not at all similar toethnic ranking, which is bad.Of course, some groups will be specializedin high finance and others will be hewers of wood and drawers of water...

This book reviews the major theories and discusses their strengths andweaknesses. He never does come down solidly in favor of one theory, but heclearly considers some very popular theories virtually worthless.

Idon't see how anybody who isn't an "ethnic entrepreneur" couldread this book and still think that affirmative action, massive immigrationand group rights will reduce ethnic conflict. This is a very scary bookand difficult, too, but well worth the effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid scholarly treatise on ethnic conflict
This book is a scholarly treatise on ethnic conflict. The author's ideas are thoroughly developed, and supported with numerous examples andreferences.I finished the book with a far greater understanding of theroots, complexity, dynamics, and interventions for ethnic conflict. Horowitz shows how the ethnic conflict which we may be most directly awareof is an example of a larger phenomenon. The book is not easy to read.Itis 684 pages. Many of its 16 chapters have over 100 footnotes.Thewriting style favors cautious scholarly precision with exhaustive attentionto detail, rather than an easy to understand summary of the central ideas. ... Product Description
Chicano Studies is a comparatively new academic discipline. Unlike well-established fields of study that long ago codified their canons and curricula, the departments of Chicano Studies that exist today on U.S. college and university campuses are less than four decades old. In this edifying and frequently eye-opening book, a career member of the discipline examines its foundations and early years. Based on an extraordinary range of sources and cognizant of infighting and the importance of personalities, Chicano Studies is the first history of the discipline.

What are the assumptions, models, theories, and practices of the academic discipline now known as Chicano Studies? Like most scholars working in the field, Michael Soldatenko didn’t know the answers to these questions even though he had been teaching for many years. Intensely curious, he set out to find the answers, and this book is the result of his labors. Here readers will discover how the discipline came into existence in the late 1960s and how it matured during the next fifteen years—from an often confrontational protest of dissatisfied Chicana/o college students into a univocal scholarly voice (or so it appears to outsiders).

Part intellectual history, part social criticism, and part personal meditation, Chicano Studies attempts to make sense of the collision (and occasional wreckage) of politics, culture, scholarship, ideology, and philosophy that created a new academic discipline. Along the way, it identifies a remarkable cast of scholars and administrators who added considerable zest to the drama. ... Read more

Product Description
Ethnic conflict often focuses on culturally charged symbols and rituals that evoke strong emotions from all sides. Marc Howard Ross examines battles over diverse cultural expressions, including Islamic headscarves in France, parades in Northern Ireland, holy sites in Jerusalem and Confederate flags in the American South to propose a psychocultural framework for understanding ethnic conflict, as well as barriers to, and opportunities for, its mitigation. His analysis explores how culture frames interests, structures demand-making and shapes how opponents can find common ground to produce constructive outcomes to long-term disputes. He focuses on participants' accounts of conflict to identify emotionally significant issues, and the power of cultural expressions to link individuals to larger identities and shape action.Ross shows that, contrary to popular belief, culture does not necessarily exacerbate conflict; rather, the constructed nature of psychocultural narratives can facilitate successful conflict mitigation through the development of more inclusive narratives and identities. ... Product Description
The yearning to remember who we are is not easily detected in the qualitative dimensions of focus groups and ethnographic research methods; nor is it easily measured in standard quantified scientific inquiry. It is deeply rooted, obscured by layer upon layer of human efforts to survive the impact of historical amnesia induced by the dominant policies and practices of advanced capitalism and postmodern culture. Darder's introduction sets the tone by describing the formation of "Warriors for Gringostroika" and "The New Mestizas." In the words of Anzaldua, "those who cross over, pass over . . . the confines of the `normal.'" Critical essays follow by Mexicanas, poets, activists, and educators of all colors and persuasions. The collection coming out of the good work of the Southern California University system relates to all locales and spectrums of the human condition and will no doubt inspire excellent creativity of knowing and remembering among all who chance to read any part thereof. ... Product Description

This book provides a fresh look at ethnic culture in the contemporary United States through an ethnographic account of everyday life in the Jewish community of South Philadelphia. By embracing the language and traditions of their childhood, elderly Jewish residents, the children of immigrants, create a path for the transmission of immigrant culture. The work highlights the role of language in collective memory. The residents’ use of Yiddish and their warm attitude toward the language illuminate their changing and overlapping identifications with the neighborhood, their non-Jewish neighbors, Jewish traditions and religion, and their children and parents.

The book serves as a corrective to the view of the second generation that concentrates solely on the framework of mobility and rejection of one’s parents’ culture, neglecting the importance of life cycle changes. It depicts children of immigrants as crucial interpreters of the culture of the immigrants’ homeland as they forge a meaningful existence for themselves and their own children. In the course of the work, the author documents and analyzes for the first time the Yiddish speech of American Jews. He examines the cultural implications of the use of English in Yiddish speech, as well as the change in Yiddish sounds and verbal forms.

Throughout, the author carefully examines his own role in revitalizing Yiddish in South Philadelphia as he established close relationships with elderly Jews, meeting them in their homes, shops, and senior center, and leading a Yiddish conversation group at the community center. He thus provides a thoughtful contribution to the methodological discussion among anthropologists, sociologists, and linguists of the paradoxes inherent in participant-observer studies.

Product Description
"The Art of Ethnography" is a fully illustrated translation of a "Miao album" - a Chinese genre originating in the eighteenth century that used prose, poetry, and detailed illustrations to represent minority ethnic groups living in frontier regions under imperial Chinese control. These bound collections of hand-painted illustrations and handwritten text reveal how imperial China viewed culturally 'other' frontier populations. They also contain valuable information for anthropologists, geographers, and historians, and are coveted by art collectors for their beautiful imagery. 'Miao' in this context refers not just to groups that called themselves Miao (Hmong) or were classified as such by the majority Han culture, but generally to the many minority peoples in China's southwest. This lovely volume reproduces each of the eighty-two illustrations from the original album and the corresponding Chinese calligraphic text, along with an annotated English translation. Each entry depicts a different ethnic group residing in Guizhou. The album is anonymous and dates from sometime after 1797.Laura Hostetler's Introduction discusses the genesis and evolution of the Miao album genre and the socio-political context in which the albums were first made, the ethnographic content of the texts, the composition of the illustrations, and the albums' authorship and production. She situates the albums within the context of early modern imperial expansion internationally by introducing comparative examples of Japanese and Ottoman ethnography. Colour illustrations from other Miao albums and comparable works from other cultures give the reader a sense of the chromatic richness of "Miao album" illustrations and of their place in world ethnography. ... Product Description

For one semester/one quarter Sociology courses in Race and Ethnic Relations.

Richard Schaefer grew up in Chicago in the 1960's, at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition.  He found himself fascinated by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people's jobs.  These experiences led to a career in sociolog, and he is now a leading scholar on racial and ethnic relations.

This book grew out of his desire to help students to understand the changing dynamics of the U.S. population. This text is an accessible, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the issues confronting racial and ethnic groups in both the U.S. and other countries. Organized first by issues and then by major racial and ethnic groups. The text examines each group’s history, explores its current situation, and its concerns for the future.

This is another great book.I have been enjoying every chapter, and the material is very interesting and easy to understand.Sometimes there are books at there that writers used strong vocabulary to make their writing unique, but this could be a problem because not every one in society had the same amount of education; therefore, it could be difficult for some people to understand unless they have a dictionary by their sides.I have indeed enjoyed every chapter, and I would indeed buy another book from this author, great information.

Product Description
Between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries white British Columbians directed recurring outbursts of prejudice by against the Chinese, Japanese, and East Indians who lived among them. In White Canada Forever Peter Ward reveals the full extent and periodic virulence of west coast racism.Ward draws upon a rich record of events and opinion in the provincial press, manuscript collections, and successive federal enquiries and royal commissions on Asian immigration. He locates the origins of west coast racism in the frustrated vision of a white British Columbia and an unshakeable belief in the unassimilability of the Asian immigrant. Canadian attitudes were dominated by a series of interlocking, hostile stereotypes derived from western perceptions of Asia and modified by the encounter between whites and Asians on the north Pacific coast. Public pressure on local, provincial, and federal governments led to discriminatory policies in the field of immigration and employment, and culminated in the forced relocation of west coast Japanese residents during World War II. ... Product Description
Until the early 90s, Chinese Koreans maintained their Korean culture, language, traditions, and lineage based on kinship relations. Contrary to many scholars' predictions that the growing interaction with South Koreans would help Korean ethnics develop a minority community in China while preserving their own language and culture, Yu's research reveals that a crisis of dissolution has developed among Chinese Koreans and that the Korean minority in China is assimilating to Chinese society ever more rapidly. This book focuses on how Chinese economic reforms and interaction with South Koreans have brought change to the Korean ethnic minority in China's northeast and helped to affirm the Korean ethnic minority's identity as Chinese Koreans. Social scientists or anyone interested in studies on China or East Asia, ethnic minority studies, cultural and linguistic preservation, migration, or political economy will find this study useful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible in All Ways
I don't read much these days, and tend to prefer playing video games, but this book really drew me in. It's just incredible and I hope the authors continue to collect these kinds of pieces. This sort of thing is disappearing fast, and someone should preserve it for future generations!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard
As a former photojournalist, tribal art and antiquarian book collector who has traveled the world, it was with great pleasure that I came across this book. The photos are splendid, as is the collection, and I can't really recall seeing anything else quite like it in terms of how high the bar has been set. I consider this book the gold standard by which all others in the field should be measured, and it's a must for any serious book or art collector.
Even my 87-year-old mother was entranced by it--it took her armchair traveling to many places on the planet where the human touch of handcrafted, artistic items is still present. I marvel at the power and beauty of so many of the objects in this book, and we are all indebted to the Daalders for their efforts at assembling such a marvelous collection and making it available to the rest of us. In today's world, much of this artistry and beauty is vanishing fast...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photographs and perfect selection of the objects. A must have!
As a person particularly interested in art of the Melanesia I have to admit that this book is what I have been really looking forward to...
As the Authors live in Australia, it is not surprising that the book focuses on the Aboriginal art and the art of neighboring areas, including New Guinea. I might be wrong, but it seems to me that no one ever published book showing the Oceanic jewelry and adornment in such depth, with such care and consideration.
Page after page you enjoy wonderful pictures showing even more wonderful objects of art selected with the great care and consideration by the author, Truus Daadler. Given the fact that the Melanesia, with more than a thousand indigenous cultures and a broad variety of customs and traditions is one of the ethnographically richest parts of the world, it is hard to imagine how difficult task was to pick less than 200 objects or so, to show the incredible richness of the forms, designs, techniques and a virtually full array of the materials used. Yet, the Author managed to fulfill this task, and has done it perfectly. All objects shown, and carefully described are masterpieces, showing most prominent and characteristic features of the given region or the cultural group. This makes the book a perfect guide for all collectors willing to identify or verify the origin of their acquisitions and possessions. Book also covers in a detailed way other cultural areas of Central and South East Asia, Himalaya, Middle East and North Africa.

Without any doubt the visual aspect really contributes to the perception of the book. Great care has been put in its layout and design, it has been printed on a high quality paper, but what really makes this book are the photographs. Being photographer myself I was really amazed with the superb quality of the photos, and great craftsmanship of the photographer. Perfect selection of the background color to match the object, and great lighting bring all the important details of the objects depicted, showing their structure and texture.

Each chapter is preceded with a brief introduction on the region, its history, cultures and traditions. In this case the term "brief" means "adequate" - not to long to be overwhelming, but long enough to present all the essential data. What is important, author included the imposing list of references, so the reader interested in a particular case or culture shall easily find the appropriate resources to dig into.

In other word, I highly recommend this book, both to the professional collectors, those who are willing to start collecting the jewelry, and all that are simply interested in an ethnic art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book offering much beauty and information

Whenever I hear about a book that might interest me, and especially when it is an art book, I try to find out as much as I can from sources other than Amazon alone. In the case of "Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment", I found the website of Ethnic Art Press, which co-published the book with Macmillan Art Publishing, exceptionally useful. Such questions as I was asking myself were answered by this website, and, as I now know as the owner of a copy, the information it provided does not exaggerate the merits of the book.

Indeed, what I bought far exceeded what I had imagined. Certainly anyone interested in this book should check out the website, but even though Ethnic Art Press shows you a significant number of images which appear in the actual book, nothing prepares you for the overwhelming impact of the book when once you see it. It is a very hefty tome (3.7 kgs) of 420 thick pages of superb quality paper, hardbound in linen. The page-size is large (far more so than you'd guess), and because the pages are wider than for most books, they can accommodate, with ease, more big images than most art books do. The result is that, although there are more than 700 wonderful and substantial photographs in the book, the pages never look cluttered. The lay-out is superb--really exceptionally good and pleasing to the eye. As well, the general visual effect is "lush" and "rich" because in contrast to most books produced in recent times this one is not afraid of using colours other than grey or black as a background, always choosing just the right colours for both the images and the pages on which they appear. While vibrant in its visual effect, the book shows exquisite restraint and is never "over the top". Purely in visual terms, this is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen, and I know it will continue to satisfy me, even just as such, for as long as I shall own it.

Of course the magnificent visual impact of the book is not just a matter of superb photography and lay-out: the objects themselves are of astounding quality. A number of them belong to the South Australian Museum, but most are owned by Truus and her husband Joost, and are a credit to their ability as collectors: they have an excellent "eye" for objects which are at once beautiful and significant in terms of their meaning. For even without reading the text one feels readily that these pieces of "adornment" do not merely "adorn", but are full of content: they say something profound about the purpose for which they were used, about the beliefs of the wearers and their groups, about rites of passage, about the protection they were meant to offer to their wearers, etc. Thus we are not merely looking at superficially beautiful objects but also at important cultural expressions.

More so than is at all common in general books on ethnic jewellery, Truus Daalder delves deeply into the context from which these fine objects originate. The book is, in fact, the result of prolonged research. The Daalders have been collecting ethnic jewellery for a very long time, and with obvious interest in what they were buying, so they of course must already have known a good deal about their new possessions when they bought them, and from subsequent reading before Truus started her serious systematic research for the book. However, the thoroughness and success of her work as an investigator can be found on every page. The book (which contains more than 115 000 words) in this respect stands in sharp contrast with the few other books covering a similar range of cultures which have appeared in recent years. In general those not only have fewer objects to show, but in particular present much less information. They tend to be, when all is said and done, largely "coffee-table" productions. Truus Daalder's book offers, for each chapter, first of all a useful and substantial introduction to the culture area under consideration. The chapter then goes on to provide searching analyses and descriptions of the objects which are, once the text comes to an end, presented as illustrations. The objects shown are, additionally, provided with brief but full captions for those who mainly want to browse rather than read.

The culture areas are presented in a way not attempted before. Logically, as the Daalders live in Australia, the first chapter is dedicated to the adornment of Aboriginal Australia, which has never before been considered with any care or at all extensively in either exhibitions or in books or journals. From Australia the book moves to consideration of Oceanic adornment, which is treated in much greater depth and on a much larger scale than in any other publication. The other cultures chosen - from Asia, the Middle East, and finally Africa - are also very satisfyingly and fully dealt with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book for designers and collectors interested in design
As a jewelry designer for my company Paro Paro, working with and exploring the nature ofnatural raw materials such as wood, shell, bone, horn and resin, I have found that "Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment" contains a wealth of information and inspiration. In my designs I draw upon the objects of adornment made by others before me, including particularly traditional and tribal jewellery. Inspired by what I see, I build on such work, using my own imagination to create what I believe to be relevant objects for today. This book provides me with much of the historical knowledge I need for my own designs.

"Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment" gives every reader factual information about the origins of each piece and offers thorough accounts of the cultures to which the objects belong. Whether your question has to do with history, religion, or the function of each piece, this book is a generous compilation of all such matters.

The book's presentation of its material is beautiful. The lay-out of the large volume makes it a feast for the senses even if one were to concentrate just on its aesthetics. The photography in particular is exquisite with each choice of background colour enhancing the jewellery itself. Each arrangement needed for the taking of the photographs would have required much effort to make the objects display their true essence.

The collection of jewellery and adornment presented in this book is incredible in the range of artistry and craftsmanship which it displays. While a number of fine objects from the South Australian Museum are included, by far the most items were collectedover many years by Truus and Joost Daalder and reveal their passion as collectors and their desire to share their love for all the world to see. And as for me, I am most grateful.

For anyone who is truly appreciative of art, history and culture, this book is a unique addition to any book collection. ... Read more

Product Description
Denmark has out-performed most other advanced capitalist countries since the mid-1980s Contributors to National Identity and the Varieties of Capitalism draw from the literature on capitalism and small states and corporatism to explore why this is the case. They find that Danish political and economic institutions facilitate bargaining and consensus building in ways that have enabled the state, businesses, and labour unions to adapt to the challenges of globalization. Moreover, by virtue of its small size, homogeneous population, and response to a variety of international challenges - both economic and geopolitical - Denmark has developed a strong national identity that further bolsters consensus building. The result has been an adaptable and flourishing national political economy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars dry but beneficial
Molnar's text begins (for most of the book) in science and the search for categorising differences caused by mutation and adaptation. It then moves to biology... for the rest of the book with maybe a chapter or two on straight history. If you want to discover the truth about why there is no biological basis for "race" I highly suggest this book, read along with Brace's "Race is a Four-Letter Word".

2-0 out of 5 stars Science at a low level
I have very mixed feelings about this book.It is a good introduction to the human DNA, Chromosomes and Genes, and it is also good at showing the diversity around the world when it comes to Blood Groups, Enzymes and Hemoglobin Variants.

But Mr. Molnar is so afraid of admitting that races exists that he hides away important facts that he don't like.He strongly denies that there are different behavior among the races when the opposite actually is prooved all over.Just ask prison officers and teachers. That Negroids has up to 20 % more of the Hormone Testosterone than Whites is a so importent fact that it indeed should have been paid attention to in this book, but it is not mentioned at all!Where else than in a book like this should it have been discussed??? This high Testosterone-level makes people more aggressive and sexually active and is an importent reason for behavioral differences among the races. It explains, among many other things, the high crime-rate among Negroids (149 per 100 000 is a murder or rapist in USA), and the rellative low crime-rate among Whites (42 per 100 000 in USA) because Whites have less Testosteron.I know this is taboo, but it is altso facts that Molnar obvious hide in his book to stay politically correct.

When there are theories that not fit in with Molnar's bias, he just call them pseudo-science instead of trying to argue against it.An excample is the measure of the skulls of different races. This has been done in more than a hundred years and always brings out the same results; that Asians have biggest brains, Europeans middle, an Negroids the smallest.A hundred years with IQ-testing shows also a relationship between races concerning brain-size an intelligence.Molnar tries to cope with this by pointing to a couple of writers long time ago who had medium to small brains, and by this "argument" prove that there are no correlation with brain-size and IQ.As if there is an eternal rule that writers are more intelligent than others! This is science at a very low level.Molnar must know that the brains of two random writers from long ago can't proove anything about brain-size and IQ among races. In Norway, where I live, you have to pass an exam called Exam Philosophicum if you want to study at the university, and during The Exam Philosophicum you learn, among many other things, logical argumentation. The way Molnar argue wouldn't pass this test at all.To find out the correlation between IQ and brain-size you have to measure a lot of brains from different races. This have been done in more than a hundred years and the result are always the same: Asians have biggest brains and score highest on IQ-tests, Europeans in the middle, and Negroids at the bottom. This is well known facts, but Molnar call it pseudo-science and refuse to discuss it further. I think that is cowardly.

In the book, Molnar don't like to divide Etnic populations into races, but suddenly he finds it useable although in attacking the IQ-results of Negroids because, as he argue, there are different "races" in Africa with different mental ability, and therefore it is wrong to test all Negroes from Sub-Sahara as if they where one race.So in attacking the IQ he suddenly find it acceptable to do divide people into races nevertheles.

It is very confusing when Molnar, as an expert, try to fool the reader the way he does. But as I mentioned, the book also has it's better sides.Skip the pages about intelligence or read J. P. Rusthons book "Race, Evolution and Behavior" instead. It's a much more honest book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Variation and Genetics
Molnar's book is a wonderful introduction to human genetics, variation, and racial classification (that is, race is an illusion), just as the title suggests. Parts of the book are highly involved and technical, giving both the amateur and the professional room for learning. The book would be great for undergrads and graduate students.

4-0 out of 5 stars A diverse, useful, yet disorganized work on human variation.
Having survived a quarter-long course in anthropology using this as a textbook, I've acquired a pretty good feel for its strengths and its faults.

Let's start with the latter and work toward the former. What will bother most people is the occasionally lacking organization/illustration of the subject matter. While this is fine in a college environment, the layman can easily get lost in its pages. The chapters were probably practical enough from the author's perspective, the bulk going from one "racial" feature to another and exposing the actual evolutionary roots, but I would have liked more theoretical continuity.

Also, despite the mass of excellent data, the book lacks a proper genetic analysis of human variation. Research has given us an idea of how far various conventional "groups" are from each other, genetically speaking--sometimes in direct contravention to the expected associations. This sort of analysis is elementary to tracking our remarkable journey into the far reaches of the world, and should not be omitted in a text that considers what happened in the process.

As an extension of my first complaint, it's the lack of theoretical perspective which makes "A reader's" review possible. Had the author made the meta-scientific point of race being an irrelevant construct, my fellow reviewer would not have spoken of "...the big *racial* differences in size, speed, leaping ability, and muscularity...," since there are quite valid selective factors behind such variation, independent of any perceived "race." To Molnar's credit, he *does* take a look at stature in its evolutionary context. In any case, one must not turn "a feature present in people seen as belonging to a race" into "a racial feature." Accordingly, Molnar should have noted the inherent logical circularity of racial distinctions: Races are defined by certain features, and those features are racial because they define races. How do they define races? Because races have them. What defines a race? Those features. It is our perceptual emphasis on apparent differences that creates racial categories, and only secondarily do some intrepid pseudo-scientists attempt to provide a more sophisticated academic "justification" of those categories. This book is rife with detailed information to use against these sorts, but it helps to grasp the bigger picture in advance.

Ultimately, Molnar fails to ask a rather philosophical question: What makes a category scientifically real? If you're going to say that races don't really "exist," the standard of existence must be made explicit. The short answer is that things are scientifically real insofar as they fit into science's theoretical machine; in this case, evolutionary theory and its applications. The concept of distinct "races" arose in less enlightened times, and it is thus incommensurable with the language of modern biology. Science has no use for it, since, functionally, there is only the genetic paint of human inheritance spread over a geographical canvas, tinted by natural selection. Internally, there is no way to rigidly divide the resulting image, since one shade blends into another through space and time; externally, the substrate and the tint are often indistinguishable. Does the blending occur in more or less dramatic ways? Certainly. However, as Molnar amply illustrates, there are no simple *primary* colors in human variation (save Homo sapiens sapiens itself), and the belief that they do exist overlooks a complex history of inheritance and selection. As a result, attributing features to those "colors" is scientifically sloppy, and socially sloppy as well. "Black" Entertainment Television, "Black" crime, "Black" culture, "Black" poverty, "Black" genetic resistance to disease: Some forget the generality of racial terms, and all hide the functional factors, be they cultural, historical, selective or deeply hereditary. Race is the ultimate red herring, and Molnar should have made that explicit. Intelligent readers will find that his data can speak for itself, or at least it will help the reader recognize that understanding can only be found in that data, which, taken unto itself, contains no meta-categories.

All in all, "Human Variation, Races, Types, and Ethnic Groups"is best seen as the educated man's reference book on race, for use in illustrating your own arguments. If you're seeking a guided journey through the subject, look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ho hum textbook on what ought to be a fascinating topic
Everybody is supposed to "celebrate diversity" these days, butin practice that seems to mean stomping on anybody who actually want to doit. Few things are less welcome these days in American academia than adiscussion of what we all see as we walk down the street each day: theremarkable biodiversity of the human species. Only a few selectively bredspecies like dogs exceed humans in variability of size, color, andtemperment.

This textbook reviews most of the duller, politically lessincendiary topics in human biodiversity:e.g., blood types, sickle cellgenes for preventing malaria, and high-altitude adjustments. He shies awayfrom the more fun topics like the big racial differences in size, speed, leaping ability, and muscularity, which we all see so vividly illustratedin the Olympics and in American pro sports. (What are all those hugeSamoans doing in the NFL if human biodiversity doesn't matter much?) And,to prove that his heart is in the right place politically, Molnar mails ina pro forma denunciation of Arthur Jensen and the other Bell Curvers. Hohum.

I expected it to have some noticeble wear, but it was actually in very good condition almost like new. I was suprised. Delivery was actually pretty fast it took less than 5 days to receive. would highly recommend them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well packaged
The book came as promised, but I was very frustrated.Partially my fault, because I had dealt with other sellers that delivered much faster, so I didn't allow for as much time. The only REAL complaint was the tracking. The book was reading the status of something like "seller is preparing and packaging" for about 3 weeks. This made me very nervous and uneasy, since I was purchasing this book for a summer class.

HOWEVER, it only seemed to take about 3 days once that status changed, so it may have been something in the Amazon tracking update. The book came in the condition promised, and it was packaged very thoroughly. It was wrapped in newspaper and protective package material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very very bias
Alright, this book really gets under my skin. Here is the thing, im hispanic, my mom was a middle class Hispanic catholic who raised my father who was a lower class white protestant. My two best friends are black and the other two are white. This whole book makes it sound like we cannot get a long, and to anyone with an ounce of sense just cant understand what this book is trying to tell you.

When he talks about woman, he talks about how horrible it is that sometimes woman are denied equal opportunities, which is very true. But when he talks about muslims and how lowly they are in their culture, that is totally cool. What the heck is up with that?

Really, this guy has all these cool stats about how White people hate everyone and put them down. its remarkable. he has almost no understanding of economics and the free market, and he thinks he stupid statistics can solve anything if we can just make everyone equal (SOCIALISM). This guy is a total nut job, i'm sorry to anyone has to use it for a class like mine.

Religious Studies

Over the last thirty years African American voices and perspectives have become essential to the study of the various theological disciplines. Writing out of their particular position in the North American context, African American thinkers have contributed significantly to biblical studies, theology, church history, ethics, sociology of religion, homiletics, pastoral care, and a number of other fields. Frequently the work of these African American scholars is brought together in the seminary curriculum under the rubric of the black church studies class. Drawing on these several disciplines, the black church studies class seeks to give an account of the broad meaning of Christian faith in the African American experience. Up to now, however, there has not been a single, comprehensive textbook designed to meet the needs of students and instructors in these classes. Black Church Studies: An Introduction will meet that need. Drawing on the work of specialists in several fields, it introduces all of the core theological disciplines from an African American standpoint, from African American biblical interpretation to womanist theology and and ethics to sociological understandings of the life of African American churches. It will become an indispensable resource for all those preparing to serve in African American congregations, or to understand African American contributions to the study of Christian faith.

  • Looks at the diverse definitions and functions of the Black Church as well as the ways in which race, class, religion, and gender inform its evolution.
  • Provides a comprehensive view of the contributions of African American Scholarship to the current theological discussion.
  • Written by scholars with broad expertise in a number of subject areas and disciplines.
  • Will enable the reader to relate the work of African American theological scholars to the tasks of preaching, teaching, and leading in local congregations.
  • Will provide the reader the most comprehensive understanding of African American theological scholarship available in one volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dense psychological study of fascinating topic
This is an anthology which investigates the psychological needs of women of color in the US in detail. Most of the contributors are women of color themselves, but there is one contribution by a man.The chapters are divided into regional groups (Latinas, Native Americans, Jamaican women), psychological strategies (feminism, psychopharmacology, and integrationist theory), and special populations (professional women, lesbians, mixed-race women). The articles are long and detailed. The non-psychologist may be scared off, but should try to forge ahead in completing the book. The authors sometimes quote old sources; I'm not sure if this is their being thorough or signifying that little source work exists. The authors often quote other contributors to the volume; I'm not sure if this is the decision of the editors or if this signifies that the authors are the best experts in these areas.I found the theory portion of the book to be the most tiresome. However, the whole book is a good review of the literature and does a good job in pointing to the further scholarship that needs to be done. The book carefully states that women of color would be better off having women of color as their therapists, yet it also faces that reality that most of its readers will be white female therapists who "want to be helpful."I would recommend this anthology seriously to all psychotherapists and any readers interested in womanist/mujerista research. ... Product Description

Despite their twin positions as two of North America’s most iconic Italian neighborhoods, South Philly and Toronto’s Little Italy have functioned in dramatically different ways since World War II. Inviting readers into the churches, homes, and businesses at the heart of these communities, Staying Italian reveals that daily experience in each enclave created two distinct, yet still Italian, ethnicities.

As Philadelphia struggled with deindustrialization, Jordan Stanger-Ross shows, Italian ethnicity in South Philly remained closely linked with preserving turf and marking boundaries. Toronto’s thriving Little Italy, on the other hand, drew Italians together from across the wider region. These distinctive ethnic enclaves, Stanger-Ross argues, were shaped by each city’s response to suburbanization, segregation, and economic restructuring. By situating malleable ethnic bonds in the context of political economy and racial dynamics, he offers a fresh perspective on the potential of local environments to shape individual identities and social experience.
