Product Description

This uniquely practical volume examines precisely what the therapist can say at key moments to enhance therapeutic effectiveness and the process of healing and change. Through vivid clinical illustrations, the book illuminates why some communications in therapy are particularly effective, while others addressing essentially the very same content may actually be countertherapeutic. Wachtel's powerful integrative theory also provides new insights into how psychological disorder evolves, how it is maintained, and how psychotherapy contributes to change.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exposure and the Art of Interpretation in Therapy
Paul Wachtel is one of the first psychologists to devise an integrative theory of therapy. This book is well written and will be useful to the therapeutic practice of a great many therapists of differing theoretical orientations. In the early chapters he introduces key notions of his approach called "cyclical psychodynamics", which integrates behavioral, cognitive, and systems approaches within a contextually oriented psychodynamic theory and therapy. According to Wachtel anxiety is frequently the result of inner conflicts and experiences that the person has made attempts to avoid and are now surfacing into consciousness, further reinforcing defensive avoidance strategies. He further conceptualizes interpretation in therapy as a means to expose the person to the material of the anxiety as well as the anxiety itself. The bulk of the book explicates the finesse and tact involved in the communicative aspects of such exposure oriented interpretations in therapy, i.e., the art of knowing what to say and when to say it. I look forward to a book by Wachtel that introduces the reader to "all" aspects of his integrative approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare find-tells therapists *how* to talk to their clients!
Hundreds, maybe thousands, of books review various therapeutic procedures and treatment strategies, encompassing everything from Freudian analysis to primal scream therapy.Dr. Wachtel, however, shuns this traditional theoretical approach.Instead, he focuses on how what therapists actually *say* to their clients affects the therapy process.Dr. Wachtel clearly and succinctly describes the use of subtle word changes in the therapist's comments (both statements and questions) in order to facilitate further exploration and increase the likelihood of positive outcomes. In addition, he provides specific examples and excerpts from actual therapy sessions to highlight the application of his methods. These simple techniques are applicable to various theoretical orientations, therapist educational backgrounds, and client problems. Thus, this book would be useful to any clinician seeking to enrich his or her therapeutic skills, and I highly recommend it for beginning and seasoned practitioners alike ... Product Description
When You Talk, Are People Changed?

Whether you speak from the pulpit, podium, or the front of a classroom, you don’t need much more than blank stares and faraway looks to tell you you’re not connecting. Take heart before your audience takes leave! You can convey your message in the powerful, life-changing way it deserves to be told. An insightful, entertaining parable that’s an excellent guide for any speaker, Communicating for a Change takes a simple approach to delivering effectively. Join Pastor Ray as he discovers that the secrets to successful speaking are parallel to the lessons a trucker learns on the road. By knowing your destination before you leave (identifying the one basic premise of your message), using your blinkers (making transitions obvious), and implementing five other practical points, you’ll drive your message home every time!

“Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”

“Once upon a time…”

“In the beginning…”

Great stories capture and hold an audience’s attention from start to finish. Why should it be any different when you stand up to speak?

In Communicating for a Change, Andy Stanley and Lane Jones offer a unique strategy for communicators seeking to deliver captivating and practical messages. In this highly creative presentation, the authors unpack seven concepts that will empower you to engage and impact your audience in a way that leaves them wanting more.

“Whether you are a senior pastor with weekly teaching responsibilities or a student pastor who has bern charged with engaging the hearts and minds of high school students, this book is a must-read.”

Bill Hybels

“A very practical resource for every biblical communicator who wants to go from good to great.”

INSIDE LEFT FLAP

Story Behind the Book

Andy Stanley and Lane Jones are on staff at one of America ’s largest churches, North Point Community. Leaders of thousands of people, they regularly speak in front of large groups. They also listen to numerous speakers and know the disastrous effects of a poorly delivered message. 5-0 out of 5 stars Get ready for a challenge!
Andy Stanley and Lane Jones' book really sets you up as a communicator to be challenged. I'm a young preacher and I have been challenged to utilize the principles found in this book. The first half reads like a simple novel. It introduces the reader to the concepts that will be discussed later, but does so in a way that is really non-confrontational. The follow-up does a wonderful job in expounding on those principles and helping the reader to implement them! I have a little poster hanging by my desk now with "ME-WE-GOD-YOU-WE" (the map principle in the book) to help me during my sermon preparation. I highly recommend this book for not only preachers, but any communicators!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Format - Valuable Reminder for Preachers & Teachers
Andy & Lane create a fun read that teaches.

I knew the preaching principles about which they wrote, I have even the same concepts in Bible college, but when it came time to assess what I actually did on Sunday morning ... bzzzzzt!Disconnect.

This is a gut-check for most pastors who struggle to break out of the moldy practices of the past, their personal stylistic rut, and other bad habits.

This is a how-to for the essentials of a message that will be heard AND remembered.

There is little point to a message that is mere entertainment or so boring that it is merely tolerated -- both are poor stewardship of precious moments with a group of people who may never hear the Word again the rest of the week.

Thanks to Andy and Lane for a valuable wake-up call!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a communicator, you need to read this book!
Well the title sums it up, if you are a communicator and truly want to get better at what you do, then pick up this book. Andy Stanley, one of Christians best communicators, shares a wealth of information and helping advice to get your audience to there destination. Highly recommend this book to all who want to get better or just want to start speaking.

Stanley clearly outlines steps to effective sermon preparation, understanding it is not a sermon until it is preached. And Lane Jones wraps it all around a cool story. The ONE thing that helped me most is the ONE point idea:Focus!Focus!Focus! Thanks be to God these servants and my friend who recommended this very helpful resource.

3-0 out of 5 stars A solid textbook
This is a well written and clearly organized book on communication in organizational settings. It includes the necessary primers of organizational theory to allow the student reader enough background to learn about and discuss the topic without any prerequisite reading. This is an appropriate text for a graduate level course in the title subject or as a reference for related courses

5-0 out of 5 stars Organizational Communication: Balancing Creativity and Constraint
Love this book.It was easy to use to study and go back to find terms. It was up to date and used examples that anyone could relate to. It was easy to follow along and provided a lot of helpful information.I won't be reselling this book.I know I can refer to this book again and again out there in the workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars communication textbook
Everything came in a reasonable amount of time and it was described exactly as I received it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding
I am a graphic design professional and the daily application, negotiation and consideration of 'communication' in all of its forms impacts my work, and this is mostly referring to the communication that occurs between people and societies, over and above that of 'designed communication' through the products of a graphic design project. I commenced a Masters Degree in Organisational and Professional Communication, and found that this text was far superior to everything I was presented in the degree... this book crystalises every pivotal concept, in clear, accessible, and credible language... but most of all bridges the gap between academia and actual practice. I'm so thrilled with this book. It's like a bible to everything that matters... understanding more about the nature of human beings and relationships in all aspects of modern life. I would recommend this book to literally anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making Org Comm Understandable
I am a communication graduate student, so I've read a lot of organization communication texts and readers. I've read my Weick, my Mumby, my Deetz, my Jablin, my Putnam & my Poole. While I would never suggest that anyone ever forgo reading primary sources, who can argue that sometimes we just lack the time to read everything we would like to? That is where this book comes in.

This Eisenberg & Goodall book is not just an average review of the major concepts, themes and theories in organizational communication. It covers the concepts of org comm in more detail than most texts do. The authors also are very aware of the changes and challenges to organizations in the contemporary world, and included excellent chapters on globalization, outsourcing, etc.

Finally, Eisenberg & Goodall wrote this text interactively. It is the most dialogical of all the org comm texts I've read. This stimulates not just the memorization of fact, but deep-rooted thinking and contemplation.

If you do not know where to start when you look at the expansive landscape of organizational communication, this is THE place to start. After a thorough reflective reading of Eisenberg and Goodall, you will definately have a firm foundation to read the primary sources you want. ... Read more

I was a little disappointed in this book overall. I thought it would have great activity ideas for my speech class, and they were just "average" or "so-so" ideas--nothing that workable or useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
This book is absolutely great. It's creative, easy to read, and even easier to employ in the classroom! It can be used with multiple grade levels- middle school, high school, and beyond.I found it inspiring and would recommend it anyone associated with the public speaking / oral comm. training field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good even for the ESL classroom.
I got this book to use in my ESL speech classes. With a few tweeks, I was able to apply the exercises in the book to Japanese students.Great new approach for the students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Tool.
Many of the things that a teacher is taught in school about what one should teach and how one should teach really aren't that useful once a teacher actually starts teaching. Not only that, but many beginning teachers struggling with teaching the things they want to teach in a way that excites students and causes them to want to learn.Speech classes at the secondary level are no different than classes anywhere else and public speaking/speech teachers struggle just as much as any othe teacher with how to make lesson practical and applicable in the classroom.

THE COMPLETE BOOK OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION is a great tool for any speech teacher looking for ideas to use in the classroom. As a beginning teacher, I have found it incredibly valuable. I have found it especially useful in trying to create lesson plans and to find fun ideas for fillers to use at the end of a class. The book is full of ideas and covers many of the areas of public speaking from informative speeches, impromptu speeches, oral interpretation, persuasive speeches, reader's theatre, just to name a few. It's a wonderful resource.

Product Description
Achieve a true competitive edge.

Speed is a double-edged sword that both scares and exhilarates business leaders in their efforts to get products to market faster, seize new opportunities before their competition, or increase productivity. But by doing the wrong things fast, waste is all that is accelerated, and value is sacrificed.

Historically, flawed human interactions have plagued most efforts to accelerate business success. Communication consultants Mickey Connolly and Richard Rianoshek believe that under the banner of expedience, managers are wasting the creative power of their employees, and that more output could be produced faster by managing the social issues that most owners and managers step over. Social literacy, they contend, is all about communication design. For the first time ever, Connolly and Rianoshek make their speed-guaranteed communications skills accessible to any business owner or manager. Readers will learn:

• Why communication is the answer to the modern demand for speed

• How genuine, skillful communication can heal the rift between high performance and meaningful work

• How communication can benefit such measurable areas as recruiting, retention, time to market, customer loyalty, and earnings per share

The information outlined by Connolly and Rianoshek will help readers improve the quality of their communication to promote trust, creativity, and coordinated action-thus producing more results per hour and achieving a true competitive edge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Speed takes communication: How fast do you want to go?
Effective execution takes coordinated effort. Why is this seemingly obvious fact so difficult to experience? The authors do an excellent job of illustrating how effective listening provides the starting point for a level of interaction that allows disparate views to be heard and valued.

This book allows me to be more aware of and intentional about, creating converations that search for a meaningful launching pad for strategic and tactical execution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apply These Principles
I was introduced to this book by a colleague at a former employer. If you feel like you are building consensus, driving decisions or winning arguments - only to learn later that nothing is sticking "because of the other guy" - then you owe it to yourself to read this book.

The authors do an excellent job covering the theory of creating an authentic dialog where truth is spoken, beliefs are shared, perspectives understood and alignment and consensus are built. One of the key points is that communicating at this level is not always easy or comfortable, but it is essential to constructive communication.

In terms of format, the authors combine theory with a running fictitious story that is more colorful and detailed than a typical case study. Some may think the story is hokey, but I found it useful and entertaining. It also makes the book a hybrid between the cutesy (and somewhat useless - IMHO) parable format that is raging across business publishing, and pure theory, which can become dry and pedantic.

This is a very helpful book if you need to facilitate meetings to produce business results. It has helped me immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars refreshing and effective
The authors have offered a refreshing and effective model for communicating. The search for an intersection of facts, views, and intent makes incredible sense.I am using this model in all of my work and making progress in creating more value and less waste.I love their vocabulary.Buy this book if you want to make a positive and significant difference in the manner in which you communicate to those you want to influence, inspire and transform.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good thoughts, ideas, and insights
I put off reading this for almost a year, because I was pretty skeptical of another business book with a long title. Full disclosure: I received a free copy from one of the authors, but that only made me feel guilty enough to actually finally pick it up and read it.

Well worth the read, and worth having at hand as a reference if you work in any way at all in the interface between your company, clients, the public, and stakeholders.

Lots of real world cases and lessons learned from the last few years as corporate execs and communications pros adapt to the influence of social networking and the changes it forces on us.

I'm still not sure what to make of the first two chapters, but the rest are high value.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all project managers and business leaders
Effective communication is 90% of a project manager's key role. The Project Management Communications Bible provides all the tools and techniques for creating and managing effective communications to your project stakeholders. This makes an excellent desk reference for project managers and business leaders alike, and is well-aligned with PMI standards and methods.I highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of Kindle version
Beware, little if any editing has been done to make viewing this on kindle easy. Also, although the Amazon write-up talks all about the DVD ROM and sample forms, you won't get it, or receive it electronically.Attempts to contact Amazon were ignored.Buy the paperback version.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great projeect management reference!
This is a helpful reference book.As one of the other commentors stated, it is a complete reference book on project management and is not meant to be read from cover to cover. However, it'd be good to review all of the tools that we as project managers typically forget over time because there's a multitude of tools available. It's a practical and readable reference book.A must-have for project managers who are looking to improve their game.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference material. Not as good for learning.
The Project Management Communications Bible contains an encyclopedic listing of project management communication tools laid out by the knowledge areas and processes defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge.

This is an excellent reference guide for any PMP who needs to look up a specific template or who needs to see what communication tools would best fit their needs.Likewise, it would be invaluable for someone setting up a project management office -- giving them a library of document templates that they could customize for their organization.

Be warned though, this document is more an encyclopedia than a textbook. It is useful as a reference, but anyone who intends to read it from beginning to end as a way to learn project management communication skills will find it difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Project Management Communications Bible
This is an extremely well put together work. It is not only thick with communication tools relevant to project management; but, by nature it helps to further define the field of project management. The authors very effectively present solutions to all kinds of communication situations. Many tools are effective well beyond a project based environment and are effective management tools. This is a valuable resource that I would recommend to anyone. ... Read more

I received my book in a week and a half and it was in perfect condition when I got it. Still in shrink wrap. Very impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interpersonal Communication
This book is a real mind opener. It's worth the time not only to take the class, but just to read through the book.Good ideas on how to deal with relationships including; friends, spouse, co-workers, and managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book to teach a class, but now I read it for pleasure
I used this book several years ago, when I filled in for a professor on leave. He used this book in his interpersonal communications class and I just followed suit.

I love it. Devito writes in a conversational tone that makes the most difficult concepts readily understandable. His examples were relevant, and I was able to create real-world exercises to explore the information he presented. Devito's explanation of acculturation and culture shock provided a great context when I screened John Sayles' movie "Brother from Another Planet."

My teaching position only lasted a year. I kept the book and I read it from time to time. Now that I'm a freelancer, I use it to come up with ideas for magazine articles. I wish the latest edition wasn't so expensive; otherwise, I'd buy a newer copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Textbook Ever!
This was the most interesting textbook I have ever read.Easy to understand and to the point. It is one I intend on keeping as a reference guide, and also one I will offer to my husband to read.Business people in any profession, I'm sure, will find this book helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook for Advanced PR Class
I used this book for an Advanced Public Relations course in my senior of college. I have nothing but great things to say about it. The cases presented are pertinent and helpful for applying public relations concepts to real-world situations. The wide of array of topics is also helpful. From cases like the well-known Tylenol and cyanide case from the 1980's, which is usually a focus of at least one Introductory Public Relations lecture, to ones I had never heard of such as the 1994 Cal State Northridge Earthquake (I was 9 years so I do not remember the media coverage).
Crisis communication is at the center of most public relations courses. This book,Crisis Communications: A Casebook Approach (Lea's Communication Series)is by far one of the most beneficial textbooks used for any of the college courses I have taken. It is easy-to-read which helps in understanding the concepts that are highlighted in each case.Cases from this book are also memorable, which I cannot say for books that I have encountered past with similar content outlintes or table of contents.
I recommend this book to any professor of communication and to students. It contains relevant material on crisis communication, basic PR functions and also touches on some ethical issues. I would also suggest it to new PR professionals (specifically, recent college graduates). I think if this book was not part of someone's college textbook collection, then it ought to be.It is extremely useful and I could not be more enthused to write a positive review about a communications textbook. Pick this book up and read it! It's amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crisis communication a case approach review
I'm teaching a crisis communication course as a second term public relations course.Finding this text was a gift from the author. The front part of the text covers the crisis communication literature/theories and the second part has very well-developed case studies. It is up-to-date and well written. My students rave about the text. Most read the text completely and then are going back to each chapter as we move through the term. Since my students are required to produce case study evaluations they find the examples in the text to be a good model.Students say this book is a "keeper."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is one of my required textbooks for a class on Crisis Management. It is very informative and easy to read. The information is well organized, and the case studies tie the main points together very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of How PR Crises Are Handled
I anticipated that reading a book about my profession would be rather dry, but was actually quite riveted by this book.It goes into excellent detail about the way a wide variety of crises are handled and offers common sense and explicit guidlines about how to deal with crisis communications.

Such a variety are included that it is likely to cover an area familiar to any PR professional.

She includes detailed interviews with those in charge of dealing with the media and several crisis communications plans. From NIKE to the postal service shootings, the book takes an inside look at how different PR professionals reacted to the variety of circumstances.

It is always useful to look closely at what others in your business are doing and this book does an excellent job of conveying that. This book consolidated many things I knew but had not put together completely. ... Read more

What is the book about? One of the major areas of difficulty forstudents with autism spectrum disorders is the development of socialand communication skills.Communication breakdowns can be a "root"cause of problems in social interaction, educational performance, andbehavior. While it is common for educational programming to focus ondeveloping communication skills, that focus in most settings tends tobe directed toward developing the student's expressive communication.Comparatively little attention is directed toward increasing thestudent's ability to understand the communication in his life.Thisbook demonstrates why an inability to effectively take in andunderstand information can be a significant factor in these student'sperformance. Visual Strategies for Improving Communication containsnumerous easy to use systems and strategies that have proven to helpthese students significantly improve their ability to understand, express themselves, participate in home and school routines andimprove overall behavior.

Tell me more. . . .It is commonly recognized that communication isone of the primary areas of difficulty for persons who experienceautism.Understanding the communication of others, trying to figureout what is happening or not happening, handling changes andtransitions, and interpreting cues and signals in the environment canall be areas of difficulty for this population.Organizing, sequencing, and remembering what to do or when to do it can all causeproblems.Stepping out of familiar environments and routinesincreases stress. The frustration of not understanding can leadstudents to ritual and rigidity and a lack of flexibility with change. In the midst of these areas of difficulty, it is recognized that mostindividuals who experience autism display a relative strength invisual skills.Capitalizing on that strength, the use of visualstrategies to support communication has provided the structurenecessary to substantially alter many problem situations.

How are the students helped? The first goal when working with thesestudents is to create an environment that will support communicationand make communication breakdowns less likely to occur. This isaccomplished in part by developing a system of visual tools and aidsto increase communication effectiveness.Schedules, aids to givedirections, and aids to give information, and aids to establish andcommunicate rules are tools designed to increase the student'sunderstanding of what is happening around him.A second goal, improving student independence and participation, is met with thepresence of visual tools.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good 1st Yr. Speech Book
I had to have this book for my first year college speech class. It was interesting to read, but I wish that I didn't have to actually read so much of the book to get the meanings.Part of that is not knowing HOW to read a college text book.

Being a Media & Public Communications major, and I can see how this book is really useful for incoming freshman. Most have only given speeches in high school and need to develop the skills for giving good speeches and presentations in college and beyond.

This book really lays out the process for speeches and your behavior. What kind of non-verbal cues are you sending? There is also a pseudo-outline (you actually have to pick out the details from the reading) for laying out a speech.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I hoped for!
So pleased to be able to save off the new price for a book I will use for a semester!Book arrived quickly and as described!

4-0 out of 5 stars "The clerk opened their book" is correct !
There was a fascinating little section of this book that was an eye opener for me. Take a phrase with a gender ambiguous word like "The clerk opened his book". Clerk is singular and could be male or female. Textbooks on English grammar say that you should choose the male singular word "his", as done above, when the gender of the noun is unclear (since English has no explicit genders for most nouns). A bit sexist, surely. So some people might say instead "The clerk opened her book".

In either case, it makes sense to use a singular word, to match the singular noun. So "The clerk opened their book" is wrong, even if people would often speak that. But this text says that the rule only came to being in the last 2 hundred years. Prior, "The clerk opened their book" was the accepted and correct usage. The text quotes Shakespeare twice, which is pretty definitive.

Crikey! So common vernacular is correct by some measure. Alas the book doesn't suggest why the current rule arose. But probably because with the advent of universal education, some attempt was made to impose more logic into English grammar, and the Shakespearean usage is logically inconsistent.

I learn something every day. There's a lot in the book, but that was the highlight for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Linguistics Book
This book is fairly easy to read, using data from many languages to illustrate key concepts relating to language and culture. Most linguistics books are full of technical language, and this one is no exception...people new to the study of language may find it helpful to have a textbook (or Wikipedia) on hand for reference. But it isn't as dense as some books I've read for undergrad courses, so I thought it was a nice break from the heavier stuff while still providing a good overview of the field

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text for Language, Culture & Society courses!
Nancy Bonvillain is one of the top anthropological linguists in America. This is one of the best text books on the subject that's ever been written. It includes clear explanations and excellent cross-cultural examples. It follows the major traditions set by American linguists and anthropologists in the study of language description, language structure, language acquisition, language change, and the ways in which language reflects differences in cultural values, beliefs, and practices cross-culturally.It's a handy book to use in the undergraduate linguistic anthropology course and students enjoy it.
