Product Description

For undergraduate introductory physical anthropology, biological anthropology or human origins courses.

Biological Anthropology, 2/e continues to build upon the strength and success of the first edition by integrating the foundations and the most current innovations in the field from the ground up.

Over the past twenty years, this field has rapidly evolved from the study of physical anthropology into biological anthropology, incorporating the evolutionary biology of humankind based on information from the fossil record and the human skeleton, genetics of individuals and of populations, our primate relatives, human adaptation, and human behavior.  The second edition of Biological Anthropology combines the most up-to-date, comprehensive coverage of the foundations of the field with modern innovations and discoveries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
This book was used for my Intro to Human Evolution course. I entered the subject with very little prior knowledge and am now leaving majoring in it. This book is not too difficult to read and covers a lot of information in an interesting and thorough manner. Not only did I learn a lot from reading this text, but I also enjoyed it. It was very accessible with out being dummied down. There's a lot of interesting articles within the book about specific topics within each unit. I would highly recommend this. ... Read more

Product Description
Many serious public health problems confront the world in the new millennium. Anthropology and Public Health examines the critical role of anthropology in four crucial public health domains: (1) anthropological understandings of public health problems such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes; (2) anthropological design of public health interventions in areas such as tobacco control and elder care; (3) anthropological evaluations of public health initiatives such as Safe Motherhood and polio eradication; and (4) anthropological critiques of public health policies, including neoliberal health care reforms. As the volume demonstrates, anthropologists provide crucial understandings of public health problems from the perspectives of the populations in which the problems occur. On the basis of such understandings, anthropologists may develop and implement interventions to address particular public health problems, often working in collaboration with local participants. Anthropologists also work as evaluators, examining the activities of public health institutions and the successes and failures of public health programs. Anthropological critiques may focus on major international public health agencies and their workings, as well as public health responses to the threats of infectious disease and other disasters. Through twenty-four compelling case studies from around the world, the volume provides a powerful argument for the imperative of anthropological perspectives, methods, information, and collaboration in the understanding and practice of public health. Written in plain English, with significant attention to anthropological methodology, the book should be required reading for public health practitioners, medical anthropologists, and health policy makers. It should also be of interest to those in the behavioral and allied health sciences, as well as programs of public health administration, planning, and management. As the single most comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of anthropology's role in public health, this volume will inform debates about how to solve the world's most pressing public health problems at a critical moment in human history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for teaching cultural anthropology
The book gives great ideas for teaching cultural anthropology that getthe students more involved with the material. There are ideas for assignments as well as in-class activities. I am currently trying out one of the assignments, which seems to be very good. All in all, if the last thing you want to do is hear the sound of your own voice for 2 or 3 hours a week, buy this. You can't lose. It's especially good for new teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tools for Participatory Education
I work in various communities delivering community-based anthropology courses in a very short period of time from one week to a month. The activities and teaching strategies offered in this book are very practical and respond to a change in the field of education. The activities described in the book are easy to prepare and implement (and are fun to do). Most of the authors describe various in-class problems with which they were trying to address. Some authors also provide ideas to modify the activities according to the side of the class or the availability of resources. If you want to go beyond the straight lecture style of teaching this book certainly provides many ideas for creative teaching to stimulate consciousness-raising and encourage student participation. Two activities that stand out are "The Penny Game: An Exercise in Non-Industrial Economics" which examined the importance of reciprocity, and "The Trouble with the 'Race' Concept: It's All in the Cards" which enacts the problems in trying to classify "races".Other essays provide very practical strategies for preparing students for critical thinking, writing essays, critiquing films, participating in field visits to museums, and doing field research (excavating and interviews). ... Good delivery time and book was in good condition.Would purchase from this seller again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Anthro
This book was required for my Intro to Anthropology course. It is an interesting book, but I would not recommend it as a good text for an Intro class because it focuses only on cultural anthro, and aside from a brief mention, completely ignores the other sub fields of the discipline. It would be a good introduction to -cultural- anthropology but not to anthropology in general. The sub fields are so varied that one cannot take one and then assume that all other areas of the discipline are similar. It is true that they do overlap and each provides insight to the other, but do not assume this book will introduce you to all that you need to know about anthropology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly Readable Textbook
How often can you say you actually read an entire textbook for a course?I read this whole book; it was that well-written.

The material is well presented, with plenty of examples from all over the world. The Cross-Cultural Miscues are frequently amusing and always informative. One of my favorites involved differences in humor across cultures.

This textbook made a freshman level basics course more enjoyable than one expects of that type of course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Review on Worldview for Christian Witness
Worldview for Christian witness is a succint summary of anthropological study. This is a well researched work and the result of many years teaching experience and interaction with students and scholars. This work is highly recommended for anyone who wanted to study Anthropology, especially for those who aspire to be a cross-cultural worker whether in the missions field or marketplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I had to read this book for a class that I am taking and found the information to be both challenging and insightful.Ideal for anyone who is considering working in a missions capacity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Anthropology is not for any witness
I wonder how Christians would like a book called "Anthropology for Muslim Witness" or "Anthropology for Hindu Witness"?That is how all anthropologists will feel about this book.Anthropology is not for anybody's "witness."It is to witness the diversity of culture and religion itself.Anthropology is not designed or intended to impose one culture or religion on another. In fact, that is the very opposite and antithesis of anthropology. Anthropology is a science and a method for understanding and valuing other cultures on their own terms, not "witnessing" your own culture to them. And that is what one's own culture or religion is--just one more culture or religion in the pageant of human cultural and religious diversity. This book is a travesty, as are all such attempts to bastardize anthropology in the service of the most anti-anthropological causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Christian Should Read This
A truly amazing book, it completely changed the way I viewed cross cultural witnessing and also changed how I see other cultures. If I were to make a list of books for every Christian to read, the first two would be: 1. Bible (duh) 2. Anthropology for Christian Witness. The first reviewer has obviously not read this book or he would have understood the value of having anthropology as a witnessing tool and as a means of viewing other cultures and belief systems.

However, this book is certainly deeper than learning how to witness, it dives much further than that and actually speaks on many other topics such as how culture plays a role in forming religious practices and even shows how our own culture has influenced the way we live out a christian life. Amazing book, read it and you shall not regret it. ... Read more

    Product Description

Between Art and Anthropology provides new and challenging arguments for considering contemporary art and anthropology in terms of fieldwork practice. Artists and anthropologists share a set of common practices that raise similar ethical issues, which the authors explore in depth for the first time. The book presents a strong argument for encouraging artists and anthropologists to learn directly from each other's practices in the field. It goes beyond the so-called ethnographic turn of much contemporary art and the crisis of representation in anthropology, in productively exploring the implications of the new anthropology of the senses, and ethical issues, for future art-anthropology collaborations. The contributors to this exciting volume consider the work of artists such as Joseph Beuys, Suzanne Lacy, Marcus Coates, Cameron Jamie, and Mohini Chandra. With cutting-edge essays from a range of key thinkers such as acclaimed art critic Lucy R. Lippard, and distinguished anthropologists George E. Marcus and Steve Feld, Between Art and Anthropology will be essential reading for students, artists and scholars across a number of fields.

This is the first book to provide an overview of theory and method in anthropology which is specifically aimed at students. Starting with anthropology's foundations in the late nineteenth century, Stanley R. Barrett brings the reader up to date on such topics as the influence of postmodern and feminist criticism, changes in ethnographic style, and the shift from scientific to humanistic discourse. He discusses the power relationships between anthropologists and their subjects, from the era of colonialism through that of contemporary cultural pluralism. Barrett shows that, in recent decades, a serious gap has emerged between theory and method - a gap that will ultimately have to be addressed by today's students. ... Read more

    Product Description
Accessible and engaging, The Environment in Anthropology presents ecology and current environmental studies from an anthropological point of view. From the classics to the most current scholarship, this book connects the theory and practice of ecological anthropology, giving readers a strong intellectual foundation as well as offering practical tools for solving environmental problems.

Haenn and Wilk pose the most urgent questions of environmental protection-What are the environmental effects of urbanization? How do environmentalists represent indigenous peoples? How can we assess the impact of global, "environmentally correct" businesses such as the Body Shop? They also cover the fundamental topics of population growth, large scale development, biodiversity conservation, sustainable environmental management, indigenous groups, and consumption and globalization. A careful selection of chapters leads readers through the interactions among environmental, political, and economic forces in modern environmental anthropology. Introductory essays put this material in historical context, while a mix of academic writing, popular reporting, polemical essays, and ethical reflections frames the issues in accessible and compelling ways.

Balancing landmark essays with cutting-edge scholarship, bridging theory and practice, and offering suggestions for further reading and new directions for research, The Environment in Anthropology is the ideal introduction to a burgeoning field.

    Product Description
Forensic anthropology is a vastly popular and rapidly changing profession, yet to date there has been no volume that reflects the current state of the discipline and forecasts its future. The first comprehensive text in the field, Forensic Anthropology: Contemporary Theory and Practice examines the medical, legal, ethical, and humanitarian issues associated with forensic anthropology, current forensic methods, and bio-historical investigations.
Forensic Anthropology offers a unique synthesis of theoretical and methodological coverage. Rather than simply describing methodology, Komar and Buikstra place forensic anthropology in the broader context of medico-legal death investigations, critically evaluating practical techniques in a scientific framework and detailing the anthropologist's role in relation to both law enforcement and the medical examiner or coroner. The authors review the current state of the field, emphasizing recent changes to the judicial guidelines regarding the admissibility of scientific evidence in court. They highlight the impact of these rulings, the increased need for scientific rigor, and the evolving nature of anthropological studies, preparing students to function effectively in the demanding judicial system that will evaluate their work in the future. The text also stresses the vital importance of research in the development of forensic applications of anthropology.
Forensic Anthropology is enhanced by numerous illustrative case studies and more than ninety photos and illustrations that help to deepen and enrich students' understanding of the material. Coauthored by a top authority in forensic anthropology and an anthropologist whose fieldwork has included medico-legal death investigation in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Darfur, this volume is an in-depth and indispensable guide to the dynamic and rapidly professionalizing field of forensic anthropology. ...
