Urban planning gives practical expression to human values. Its aim is to sustain and enhance the quality of life in cities and regions, to create the good society. Therefore, in addition to special technical skills, each student is helped to acquire a broad liberal education that leads to an understanding of the natural and social environments, their problems, and their potentialities for enriching human life. Undergraduate planning education leads to diverse professional employment careers or graduate study in urban planning or related professions and is particularly useful as a prelaw program. Continuation in the program requires the student to maintain a 2.5 grade point average. The degree is professionally accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. A transfer student must have completed 30 or more semester hours of acceptable undergraduate college work (including introductory courses in microeconomics, statistics, political sciences, and sociology; a sequence in English composition is desirable) with an earned grade point average of at least 2.5 (A = 4.0). Transfer applicants not meeting these requirements will be considered in special cases.

Extractions: Doctor of Philosophy in Planning ... The School of Urban and Regional Planning is heir to a long and distinguished history of planning education at the University of Southern California. One of the first planning courses in the United States was offered at USC in 1921. Collaborative scholarship by USC faculty from various disciplines produced influential studies in urban growth and form, urban management systems and gaming simulation during the formative stages of the field. The first of several master's degrees was established in 1955, and the present school was created in 1974 as the first independent School of Urban and Regional Planning in the United States. The planning and development programs at USC are among the most diverse and wide-ranging in higher education. This is made possible by the broad interests of the school's faculty, its linkages with other faculties on campus to conduct joint studies and dual degree programs, and the many degree options, emphases and specializations available to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate study.
