Extractions: The Department of Science and Technology Studies is inviting applications for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship. The fellow will be expected to carry out research on the social, political, legal or ethical dimensions of scientific knowledge. Preference will be given to work of contemporary significance. Applicants with relevant backgrounds in science and technology studies, history of science and technology, cultural studies of science and technology, law or political science are encouraged to apply. The fellow will be required to teach one course each term on topics such as U.S. science policy and politics, law and science, science and culture or the comparative politics of science and technology. In addition, the fellow will participate in training graduate students in the department. The fellowship, for the 1998-99 academic year, carries a stipend of $33,000 plus health benefits. The fellow must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by September 1998. A$37.95, PB. By Patrick Cox David Hess claims to provide a concise overview of science studies as an interdisciplinary field with the necessary references to resource more extensive studies. His goal is to address the needs of advanced undergraduates of science studies, as well as graduate students from other fields and disciplines. It is in this context that I review Science Studies, taking the perspective of advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Science and Technology Studies (STS). Hess divides his book into four main approaches: the philosophy of science; the institutional sociology of science; social studies of knowledge; and, finally, critical and cultural studies of science and technology. "Conclusions" is followed by a brief chapter "For Additional Information", endnotes and an extensive bibliography. Hess acknowledges a primary concern with the study of science, reflected in the omission of "technology" from his book's title, which tends to weaken the justification for science studies when any distinction between the practice of "science" and "technology" is both difficult and, in many ways, irrelevant.
