Extractions: Science and Technology Studies is a complex interdisciplinary field that requires a thorough grounding in the humanistic and social science traditions as well as familiarity with and training in at least one branch of science or engineering. Students explore topics at the forefront of intellectual discourse in science and technology studies, as well as the social and intellectual contexts that have shaped these areas. Students interested in historical, philosophical or contemporary scientific and technological issues apply the methods of history of science, philosophy of science, sociology of science, political studies of science, and other relevant fields to careful analysis of ongoing problems. The field has specific course requirements. All students are expected to take, prior to their Admission to Candidacy examination, four specifically introductory theoretical and methodological courses in three of four subject areas: history, philosophy, sociology, and politics of science and technology, as well as a one-semester seminar intended as an introduction to the field as a whole. At least four of the courses taken during the student's first year should be Science and Technology Studies courses.

Extractions: The Science and Technology Studies (STS) program at Virginia Tech provides opportunities for students to pursue M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the Northern Virginia Center (NVC) in Falls Church. The STS program explores the relationship between science, technology, and society using both disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. In the past two decades numerous interdisciplinary graduate programs in STS have emerged primarily at major research universities. Virginia Tech is the largest of these programs in the U.S. with over 50 affiliated faculty and over 70 graduate students enrolled both at NVC and at the home campus in Blacksburg. Students in the STS program come from a wide range of backgrounds including: history, anthropology/sociology, philosophy, the natural and physical sciences, engineering, and numerous professional disciplines. The research and scholarly pursuits of students and faculty cross a wide range of disciplinary boundaries. Graduates emerge with an ability to identify and examine the conceptual and social dimensions of science and technology simultaneously and in historical perspective. Extractions: The Program in Science and Technology Studies: Launched in 2002, the University of Michigan-Dearborn's new Program in Science and Technology Studies (STS) is the first in the nation to give special attention to the impact of a single technology and a single industrythe automobileon American culture. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Program was developed by an interdisciplinary group of UM-D faculty from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and the College of Engineering. The Program's curriculum consists of an introductory course, STS 300, on The Automobile in American Life and Society and three groups of upper-level course offerings on "Science, Technology, and Cultures," "Science, Technology, and Labor," and "Science, Technology, and Environments." An undergraduate minor in STS is currently available to students in all academic units. What is Science and Technology Studies? STS is a multidisciplinary field in which scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences examine the social contexts from which science and technology emerge, the intertwined organizations of people and things used to implement scientific and technological systems, the social consequences of these systems, and the cultural reactions to them. Science and technology studies of the automobile, for example, analyzes the social as well as the technical reasons for the emergence of the internal combustion engine, the reorganization of factories and reconceptualization of labor fueled by mass production techniques, the impact of the automobile on the design of cities and the development of suburbs, and the iconic status of the car in American culture.
