Christianity The ideal male, in the person of Jesus and the early martyrs, was nonviolent ('turning the other cheek'). The Renaissance stereotype of man as dominated by reason and logic was undermined but not replaced by the totally incompatible Romantic image of a creature ruled by wild sexual urges, a trait formerly attributed to women. Capitalism The spread of machinery, Darwin's 'suvival of the fittest' and the erosion of patriarchy by early feminists and suffragettes led to a male crisis of identity in the West, countered by new ideas of man's life as a battle, in Britain 'muscular Christianity' (1858) and in America 'the strenuous life' (Teddy Roosevelt, 1901), all-male activities where men could play at being rough and tough. Fraternal lodges in the US grew to 5.5m. members by 1901 (Sinclair Lewis, Babbitt ). The first National Men and Masculinity Conference was held in Tennessee in 1975.
